Country Above The Cloud

On June 2017, I had a short trip with my family and my childhood friends. We went to Lumajang Regency, East Java and our goal is to go to B-29 which is a famous destination in Lumajang. It gets famous because of its mesmerizing view. So we had to travel for about 6-7 hours from Surabaya to Lumajang, depends on how often you stop on the way.

Accommodation

There are many fine homestay choices and several 1-3 star hotels that you can easily found when you arrived in the foothill area. The approximate cost you need to pay to book a homestay is from 60.000 - 100.000 rupiahs/pax. And it's better to go in groups because you can ask for a discount from the owner.

Basic Information 

There are 2 spots that you can visit. B-30 and B-29. The B-29 is more well known, but B-30 is definitely a spot you don't want to miss out! It's higher than the B-29 and more spacious. You should pay more to go to B-30 but the cost difference isn't that much and it's worth it. If you ever wonder why people named it B-30 & B-29 here is why. The 'B' stand for "bukit" in Indonesia which means hill and the '29' is from 2900masl (meters of sea level), that also applies to the '30' which is from 3000masl. But you can try to calculate using your GPS or other height measurement tools, it might not turn out to be exactly 2900/3000masl but anyway it's just a name^^

How To Get To The Top 

There are 2 options to go to the top of B-29. Either you do hiking or motorcycle riding. If you are with your family like I am, our parents might choose the motorcycle riding. And if you are with your friends, you probably want to try hiking. Both options have their own challenge. If you chose motorcycle riding, you can ask the homestay's owner for driver's contact. You can contact them and tell them you want to order for how many people and for what time. They will come in the destinated time and you can directly start your experience. 

Things To Be Remembered 

The road is a hiking road. It will be quite thrilling when it's going uphill so always hold the driver's shoulder tightly because it will be dangerous if you hold the back of the motorcycle. You don't have any choice aside from trusting the driver, but don't worry because most of them are experienced and already drove around that area for about 1-2 years time so they know exactly where they are going and what kind of road is waiting for them.

The great time to start the riding is around 4 AM. It will be super chilly!! Don't forget to wear your thick jacket, a mask that covers your nose and mouth, winter's hat, thick trousers, socks, shoes.

If you choose hiking, you might need to go earlier like maybe 3 AM so you can catch the sunrise on time. And while you're hiking, you need to listen carefully to the motorcycle's horn because it means you need to walk aside, wait and give a way to the motorcycle that will pass. (yeah.. I know it's quite inconvenient and unfair for the hikers)

During the ride that will last for about 20-30 minutes, while holding tight to the driver's shoulder, you can enjoy the cold breeze along with the magnificent dawn sky full of stars. Obviously a combination of things that you can't ever experience on daily basis especially in big cities like Surabaya and Jakarta. When you arrive at B-30, you need to wait for the sunrise that will come around 5 AM. You can take some silhouette photos and take the beautiful sunrise's process.

After watching the sunrise, you can turn around 360 degrees, and you will see different mountains. On the west side, you will see Mount Kawi; on the north side, you will see Mount Arjuno & Welirang; on the south side, you will see Mount Semeru;  you can go to the opposite direction of the sunrise and witness the magnificent natural wonder. You can see that you are on the other side of Bromo mountain and haze is the one separating you.

If you are still curious about B-29 you can ask the driver to go down and bring you there. It's smaller than B-30 and the view is practically the same. You can see the mountains too and also the paddy fields. ​ After you get enough looking around the B-30 and B-29, you can get down a bit from the top of B-29 to the resting place. There you can take a photo with the big letters 'PUNCAK B29' and then buy some warm drinks or instant noodles at the small shop there. Approximate costs 

Homestay : 60.000 - 100.000Rupiahs/pax

Motorcycle ride's cost : B-30 - 120.000 Rupiahs/person (You can ask the driver to bring you to B-29 too) B-29 - 75.000 Rupiahs/person

Instant noodles & Coffee/Drinks - 7.000Rupiahs/portion

Warm Coffee/tea - 4.000Rupiahs/cup
