Hashing out the poetics of Warszawa-Lwów 1939, an asswmblage/collage-montage of repeatedly revised mosaic fragments, non-linear, (though "re-assembled" by Maria D. & Lidia C. later on in chronological order of events, which does not necessarily correspond to the chronology of their creation) that Stefania began writing in 1940 in Paris and continued writing, revising, and rearranging until her death in 1961, though Tyrlecki claims she abandoned the project after the war. Her correspondence with Jelonka, published in the 90s, annuls this claim. A question of genre: it is presented as memoir-cum-reportage, a first foray into documentalist prose, later honed into something more literary, given the shape of a narrative. I contend that shape was there from the beginning, imposed on it by reference, by form, and paying attention only to the stream of consciousness and polyphonic, "collective" voice that drowns the first-person perspective initially and the staccato sentences and photorealistic details a la wartime freeze-frame snapshots does an injustice to Stefania's craft. She's building it as she goes, of course, but the very first story she publishes is, as I've discussed before, an unresolved Kafkaesque allegory about God rejecting sacrifice, embedded in an encounter with an elderly Jew outside the Carmelite monastery in Lublin, bombed by the Germans in September 1939, where he figures as an ironic and tragic Elijah, a prophet who learns a brutal lesson about the ambiguity of prophecy and divine language.
Tl;dr I'm calling it, in my head, "allegorical reportage in which ideas of reference become reality" - need a better shorthand but that's what it is. The associations she makes in the moment go on to indicate the shape of the narrative and the symbols she sees as significant turn out to be so. Divinity (& dziwnosc) exists in "znaki i priznaki" but withdraws from the world in other ways. Views from the window become Cubo-Constructivist paintings that prefigure history; blue flowers in the wallpaper & embroidered roses on the curtains predict what those symbols do in Polish Romanticism; etc.

Can tell I'm going to write a quasi-translation quasi-essay quasi-collage Thing about Stefania and Narcyza and "sztuczne kwiaty" (wrote that phrase in big block letters, filled a notebook page at ASEEES, underlined thrice) and the Łódź William Morris wallpaper thing vs. floral folk motifs and chimeras and names as memetic shorthand, placeholders for Referential Data Sets. Zhiznetvorchestvo, the act of naming, and flowers, and death, and mourning. And the superimposition effect from film editing I always forget the name of. Still thinking about that German academic re: Semeyni album & how "Nadya-Nechama" never occurred to him as as a significant transposition-translation, the fatum-trace, what each word means in each language. How the poem gestures at assimilation's "punctuated equilibrium" pace for members of the same generation, in a run-on stanza, Raya who was Rachel/Rokhl, not the other Raya, who's just Raya, po-russki. Always the flowers, though. From Novalis to 1939! Always always the flowers. Narcyza (also - another legacy of floral nomenclature, via France) & her "kwiatki." This is just for me and it's going to have so much Benjamin in it. Why names are given, how they're translated, when and how people rename themselves, name their "self-insert" characters. How un-naming or going back to the un-chosen name, the "untranslated" name in what is seen as that person's most "nationally [or other] essential" language over-against individual nominal self-determination is - it is the same political tactic as deadnaming, actually, always has been.
