There’s ample room for parties on the 35 metre long terrace. Photo – Eve Wilson for The Design Files. Styling – Lucy Feagins.
The Big Group co-founders Chyka and Bruce Keebaugh were looking for investment properties when they came across this new apartment development in Richmond. A mate was building the project, and the couple ended up falling in love with the site, so they decided to live there themselves!
Originally two separate apartments, the couple bought both and merged them into a single giant space, allowing ample room for parties on the 35 metre long terrace, and a huge dressing room!
The apartment is now Chyka and Bruce’s city base, which they live in part time, dividing their time between here and their sprawling weekender on the Mornington Peninsula.
Chyka reimagined the standard interiors in the design phase, replacing nearly all the sinks, joinery, taps and handles in the process. ‘‘Our powder room now has a chinoiserie armoire bought in Boston, a gold sink we found in Morocco, a black toilet (from Bunnings!), and houses one of our best paintings by Gaston La Touché!,’ Bruce says.
The floor plan has also been significantly altered by Bruce (in collaboration with MAArchitects who designed the building), to include fewer internal walls. ‘We used glass French doors throughout to ensure the spaces were open and seen, but could be closed off if required,’ he says.
The couple are big art and decor collectors, which Bruce credits to Chyka’s eye for unique pieces. ‘Her very special gift is the ability to be able to curate all this “stuff” in a manner which provides warmth, joy and comfort, and creates a home where the pieces feel alive and coherent,’ says Bruce. ‘There is not an item within all these collections that Chyka couldn’t tell you a story about – from where it was bought to why.’
Several of the couple’s treasured artworks have informed the wider interior design scheme, such as the green-toned Nicholas Harding painting that inspired the deep jewel shade on study walls. Meanwhile, a custom rug from Morocco aligns all the colours of this area into the hallway, and works with the soft green and pinks in the 1896 Cuban tea chest from Graham Geddes.
The power couple describe their finished home as layered, eccentric and warm – filled with a lifetime of collections of antiques, treasures and ceramics!
In response to the challenges of this year, The Big Group have recently launched a brand new venture, The Commons at Ormond Collective – a beautiful garden restaurant and bar, inspired by the great terraces and outdoor dining spaces of Europe and America. The perfect venue for festive celebrations  this summer!

Built in Connecticut in 1796, This Historic Home Was Reassembled in Ohio
realtor.com
Most houses only sit on one plot of land in their lifetimes. This home is different.
After making its way from colonial Connecticut to Granville, OH, the Christopher Manwaring house is now on the market. The well-traveled residence can be yours for $878,000.
The Georgian and Federal style home includes four bedrooms (and the possibility of a fifth in the basement) along with 4.5 baths and 4,500 total square feet of space.
Built in 1796 by Christopher Manwaring, a tanner and politician, the home saw extensive use in its original New London, CT, location. During the War of 1812, American officers would watch the British ships in Long Island Sound from atop its widow’s walk. The home of the Manwaring family until 1905, it entertained such illustrious guests as Andrew Jackson and James Madison.
Granville, OH
realtor.com
That year, it was donated  to a local hospital and used as a student dormitory, and also for other purposes, until the late 1960s. A local developer then purchased the home in the interest of preservation and began to disassemble it in hopes of rebuilding it elsewhere. The parts were stored across his friends’ properties—including in a chicken coop.
“This is a house that came kind of like a Lincoln Logs set,” says listing agent Lisa McKivergin. “Every piece of wood and hardware is original, but had to be examined. It’s a monument, and the fact that they could move it here and have it be resurrected is amazing.”
After a series of snags in the rebuild project, the owners at the time donated the home to the University of Connecticut Foundation, which technically still owns it today. The foundation had originally intended to resurrect the home as a museum, but lacked the funds.
Entryway
realtor.com
It languished in pieces until it was bought in the early 1990s and its many parts were moved to Granville. The Ohio city makes an appropriate new home for the building, with its strong community support and its status on the National Register of Historic Places. There, the historic home was rebuilt piece by piece, over the course of 17 months.
“People think old houses are creaky and are compromises, but this one was so well redone that it functions like a new house but is still respectful of what was authentic in those days,” says McKivergin. “From this one-million-piece puzzle … they assembled this house. It’s remarkable.”
Fireplace
realtor.com
The paint colors, wallpaper, and detailing are all as close to the originals as the owners could find. They purchased salvage rights to old New England houses searching for replacements for any missing parts, down to the fireplace cheeks and Victorian windows.
While it was being rebuilt, the home’s electrical and plumbing systems were installed new at the time of construction, for the perfect new/old balance. A boxwood garden with a vine-covered pergola completes the colonial charm.
“I wanted to list it for over a million because I value it as an antique—it’s totally irreplaceable,” says McKivergin. “It’s unbelievable that it exists, and it’s unbelievable that it can be bought.”

Riverside Modern Farmhouse Tour
It’s always a pleasure to share Heather Scott Home & Design‘s work (previously featured here), but this one feels extra special since it’s the designer’s personal home.
After many years living in Arizona, Heather and her husband, Scott, decided to leave the hot summers for a place that felt calmer and cooler. The designer’s father has traveled to Ennis, Montana for years to fly-fish on the Madison River and this seemed to be the perfect place to build their new Modern Farmhouse home.
The lot is angled towards the river and the scenic mountains which certainly inspired this couple to design a home that feels close to nature and close to their loved ones.

Special thanks to Erin Dollar for helping put together this guide together.
San Diego often flies under the radar… it’s tough to compete with LA just a couple hours away. The easy-going culture of the city extends way beyond the beach. This community has more to offer than just great weather and theme parks — San Diego, California has a vibrant developing art and design scene, and historical architecture to inspire even sophisticated design devotees.
WHERE TO STAY
One Bunk

New York's Patent acts as cafe by day and speakeasy by night
A light-toned coffee and pastry shop in Manhattan's NoMad district provides a front for a secret subterranean bar behind, both with interiors by Carpenter + Mason.
Patent Coffee and Patent Pending occupy the cellar of the Radiowave Building, where inventor Nikola Tesla once lived and worked, in the area named for its location north of Madison Square Park.
Opened earlier this year by Ryan McKenzie, a founding partner of hospitality-focused creative agency Simmer, the concept has two identities that allow it to operate both during the day and after dark.
The space is divided into two, with the coffee shop located at the front and open during daylight hours. Only when evening comes does the hidden speakeasy behind come into use.
"After 5pm, the doors lock and things get a bit more surreptitious," said a statement from Patent. "To access the 34-seat cocktail cave, patrons buzz in at street level, traverse through the candle-lit coffee shop and slip through a concealed door."
To design the pair of distinctly different spaces, Simmer collaborated with Carpenter + Mason – the Brooklyn-based studio behind the interior of the recently opened Tonchin restaurant not far away.
In the cafe, white walls and light-toned wood contrast exposed red brick and black mosaic tiles. Colourful marble chosen for the countertop is also used as frames for floral decorations on the walls.
Behind the inconspicuous folding door, the "cocktail cave" is much more cellar-like in appearance. The brickwork is painted black, along with the majority of other surfaces.
The long, narrow space has the bar along one side, and booth seating upholstered in teal-coloured leather down the other.
Arched niches in the walls are fitted with mirrors to give a greater sense of depth to the space, while cage-like cabinets are slotted into the alcoves behind the bar to store and display liquor bottles.
An installation of metallic-coated light bulbs above the counter nods to Tesla and his work with electricity, as does the cocktail menu.
The dimly lit space also features candles hung from the walls, and placed along the bar. The entrances to bathrooms at the back are surrounded by wallpaper patterned with giant floral prints, while fresh greenery is sourced from the nearby flower district.
Speakeasies gained popularity in the US during the prohibition era around the 1920s, when the sale of alcohol was illegal across the country.
Although this ended in 1933, the type of hidden bar remained in use and became popular around the world. Examples in Hong Kong include an establishment hidden behind an umbrella shop, a bar disguised as a stamp shop and a cocktail lounge tucked behind a grocery stall.

Travel Wisconsin (No, seriously)
If you are anything like me, the only thing you probably know about Wisconsin is that it is famous for cheese production and that the That 70’s Show was set there. However, I did some research and I found out that there are actually a vast amount of amazing things to do in this state.
One thing that I would love to do if I am ever fortunate to be graced by Wisconsin’s presence is visit The National Cave of Mounds. The Cave of Mounds was discovered accidently in 1939 as workers, who were removing limestone from a quarry, blasted into the cave. The blast revealed a 20ft. high opening into a cave filled with breath-taking mineral formations. News of the breathtaking view quickly spread and people from all over the state fled to see its wonders. To form this geologic wonder, it took about 1 or 2 million years and a whole lot of science that I wont bore you with. In 1940, the Cave of Mounds was officially open to visitors. After millions of visitors, the original opening was replaced with a stone building and theatrical lighting has been installed to dramatize the colors and shapes within the Cave. Since its discovery 75 years ago, picnic areas, gift shops, walking trails, and rock gardens have all been built to accommodate the visitors. I included a link a link for a virtual tour so you can actually see the beauty of the cave instead of me just attempting to explain it to you.

If you enjoying eating and exercising and you just so happen to find yourself in Wisconsin, then you should the Milwaukee 7 Seat Bike Tour. Shlomo Levin is the owner of the 7 Seat Bike Tour Company, he bought his first 7 seat bike 6 years ago and has been leading tours ever since. "I saw a used one for sale on eBay and right at that moment I knew it was something fun, social and exciting that I wanted to bring to our community," he says. The bike works by having all the passengers peddle and one person control the steering. On this tour you and 6 other guests will visit 5 eateries and sample their signature dishes. The tour is partnered with various restaurants so the dishes are not always the same but they can be anything from sushi to bruschetta and eggplant fries to calamari and empanadas. Desserts are also included which could be Salted caramel whiskey ice cream or designer chocolate truffles. Along the way, you’ll also learn about the history of the East Side of Milwaukee. This is a great way to explore the city of Milwaukee in an untraditional way that also exposes you to new foods and people! Remember, don’t drink and peddle.
Of course when you visit, you’re going to need somewhere to stay. The Inn at Pine Terrace in located in Oconomowoc, WI. The location of the inn is what makes it so accessible to many travelers. It is located less than two hours away from Chicago and midway between Milwaukee and Madison. The inn has a famous history. It was built in 1879 and it was designed after a French nobleman’s castle near Vienna. The inn remained under original ownership for 40 years and during that time hosted Mark Twain and many of the country’s beer brewing families such as the Miller, Busch, and Pabst families. In the 1920s the home was sold and it became the Inn at Pine Terrace. The property consisted of 150+ acres and included a pathway to Fowler Lake, which helped the inn become a popular lakefront resort. In 1986, more than 1.5 million dollars were invested into the inn to restore it but still keep its original charm. All of the original woodwork, wallpaper, and even door hinges were kept. Since then, Inn at Pine Terrace has been run as a bed and breakfast, allowing both local and distant travelers to enjoy a night’s rest in a true piece of 19th century history. The Inn at Pine Terrace is a great place to relax and enjoy a Victorian feel.

She spears a buyer
Pop superstar Britney Spears has sold her home in the Lake Sherwood area of Thousand Oaks for $7 million.
The Spanish-style house, set on more than an acre, has rather awesome interiors. The high-ceiling great room bears some resemblance to a gymnasium – providing said gym included a fireplace and clerestory windows. Basketball, anyone?
The 8,500 square feet of chic space, updated since the house was built in 2010, has arched doors and windows, vaulted ceilings and glass pocket walls. There are five bedrooms and seven bathrooms.
Beyond the muted-tone interiors sits a sun-drenched swimming pool with jetted fountains. The pool, added by Spears, has a beach entry and a waterfall.
The 35-year-old singer has released nine studio albums including “… Baby One More Time” (1999), “Britney Jean” (2013) and, most recently, “Glory” (2016).

Looking for some lucky numbers
Singer-songwriter and producer Dave Stewart of the pop duo Eurythmics has listed his home of two years in Toluca Lake for sale at $5.65 million.
The Spanish-style compound, built in 1927, has a Hollywood pedigree that spans several generations. Among those to have called the estate home were silent film star Billie Dove and Oscar-winning actress Janet Gaynor.
Restored and updated, the four-bedroom, six-bathroom home retains its vintage good looks. A family room, a dining room and updated kitchen with a broad island/breakfast bar are also within the roughly 4,800-square-foot main house.
Outdoors, grounds of more than half an acre include a swimming pool and a koi pond with a waterfall feature, a detached studio/gym and a 700-square-foot guest house.
The 64-year-old guitarist and singer Annie Lennox gained fame with their second album, “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).” Stewart has released nine solo albums, most recently “Lucky Numbers” four years ago.

Down for the count
Oscar De La Hoya, the former boxing champion and Golden Boy Promotions chairman, has bought a condominium in downtown Pasadena for $2.65 million.
Located in the Montana building, the single-story unit has high ceilings and polished stone and hardwood floors. The 4,150 square feet of interior space was dressed by late interior designer Joe Nye.
A formal entry, a living room with a fireplace, an eat-in kitchen, a library/den, an office, three bedrooms and 3.75 bathrooms are among the living spaces. There’s also a wine cellar, walls of windows and 550 square feet of outdoor living area.

Ready to play through
Golfer Fred Couples has put his desert home in La Quinta back on the market for $3.75 million.
Sitting on about half an acre, the Mediterranean villa-style home combines contemporary elements with such classic details as decorative tile work, wrought iron chandeliers and massive stone fireplaces.
The roughly 5,200 square feet of living space includes a great room, a formal dining room, a media room, four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms.
Pocket doors open to a tiled patio that surrounds a swimming pool and spa.
Couples, 57, is a former Masters winner now playing on the seniors’ tour. He bought the house seven years ago for $3.07 million.

Meanwhile, in Florida…
Here’s something you don’t smell every day: scratch-and-sniff fruit wallpaper.
The sweet coverings are among the colorful details found in fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger’s Golden Beach, Fla., home, which has come on the market at $27.5 million.
Sitting on more than half an acre, the three-story house resembles a pop-art installation with a bold range of color, geometric patterns and accent pieces.
Eye-catching, but one wonders if anyone could actually fall asleep in the seven bedrooms. The scratch-and-sniff wallpaper was installed in several of the guest bathrooms. (Think banana.)
Within the 14,075 square feet of living space are a very red media room and a bar that pays homage to the ’60s and ’70s with a disco ball chandelier and transparent stools.
Outside, ocean views and a private beach create a backdrop for the infinity-edge swimming pool and spa.

The scene elsewhere
Singer-actress Selena Gomez has put her home in Fort Worth on the market for $2.999 million.
The 24-year-old Gomez bought the property two years ago for an undisclosed amount. (Home sales prices are not disclosed in public records in Texas.)
Built in 2005, the sprawling estate is English in style with Tuscan, contemporary and country touches. Can you say eclectic?
Formal landscaping and mature trees surround a courtyard entry with a circular fountain. Two garages provide parking for six to eight vehicles.
