🚶‍♂️A Guide to the Walla Crag and Derwent Water Walk

📝 A couple of days ago, I published an article on my website about a circular walk around Derwent Water. You can view it here:

🏞 The walk begins in Keswick and circumnavigates the lake in a clockwise direction. Despite being a low-level walk, it boasts some amazing views.

🌄 However, if you're in the mood for a walk of a similar length that starts from Keswick but offers a bit more elevation, you may find my guide to the Walla Crag walk more appealing:

⛰ Walla Crag is a charming hill to climb, offering views from its summit across Derwent Water and beyond that are truly spectacular. At about 380 metres, its height is modest by Lake District standards. In comparison, giants like Scafell Pike, Scafell, Helvellyn, Skiddaw, and Great End all tower beyond 900 metres. Yet, Walla Crag proves that you don't need to scale the tallest mountains to enjoy breathtaking views.

📸 On the page, as usual, I've included walking directions, photos, statistics, information about which maps to use, and some insights into the fell itself.

🥾 The walk is perfect for beginners and seasoned hikers alike; the views are extraordinary, and it's easily accessible from Keswick. This spares you the drive down some of the Lake District's winding, narrow roads. Keswick is a delightful town to explore, whether at the start or end of your hike.

Walla Crag & Derwentwater - Lake District. Sunset seen from the summit of Walla Crag last night. Although low in elevation compared to many of the surrounding peaks in the National Park, this lowly height certainly compensates for with it's tremendous views of classic Lake District territory. Derwentwater is the lake directly beneath, with Bassenthwaite Lake also visible in the distance, and the mountain of Skiddaw to the right towering above the town of Keswick. Here, the last rays of light can be seen with the sun setting over the distant Solway Firth. 🧗 The Keswick and Walla Crag walk in the Lake District. 👀 Looking west across Derwent Water from Walla Crag. The smaller island is Rampsholme Island and the larger one is St Herbert’s Island. Immediately behind the lake is the ridge made up of Skelgill Bank, Cat Bells, Maiden Moor and High Spy. Derwentwater from Walla Crag - Lake District. A spectacular sunset sky captured on the summit of Walla Crag yesterday evening. It seemed unusually quiet, as I ascended from the popular Ashness Bridge and didn't see a single person on the whole outing - including an hour or so exploring the summit area. It was lovely sitting on the edge waiting for the sunset, listening to the distinctive cuckoos in the trees of Great Wood below. The sun so very nearly made an appearance, but was blocked by the layer of fog on the distant Whinlatter Fells. However, I didn't stay disappointed for long as the sky suddenly erupted like a volcano with this wonderful splash of colour. I had to create a vertical stitch panorama as the clouds were so huge above me, and luckily they burned long enough to allow for this.
