The Lost Treasures

At the climax of the Afghan civil war of the 1990s, it was unknown what had happened to the Kabul Museum. Mir Hekmatullah Sadat wrote about the topic.

It was the chivalry of courageous Afghans led by Shah Amanullah Ghazi (r. 1919-1929) that made Afghanistan the first Muslim nation to be liberated from the tentacles of colonialism. It was this great individual who built the foundations of the Afghan National Museum at Dar-Al-Aman (Rowland, 1976). The National Museum once covered 50,000 years of history and holds one of the worlds most significant multicultural antique collections: Persian, Indian, Chinese, Central Asian, Greco-Roman, Arab and more.

The book Ancient Art from Afghanistan makes this remark about the museum: "An institution unique in the world in being composed entirely of objects acquired, not by purchase, but by excavations in the native soil" (Rowland, 1976, p.15).

Rowland (1971) explains, "the Kabul collections begin with the work of the French archaeological mission in 1922...The Italian mission at Ghazni continuing the work begun by the French in 1948, has added a precious collection of objects reflecting the splendors of the great Islamic civilization of the Ghaznavids" (x-xi).

German and Russian expeditions also took part in the excavation of priceless artifacts for the Kabul Museum. The Begram collection discovered in 1939, dating from the 1st century, comprised of 1,800 lacquers, bronzes, ivories, statutes and glassware items from Ancient Rome, Greece, India, China, Egypt, and Central Asia. Begram was the site of Kapisa, the summer capital of Kanisha, King of the Kushans. Rashid (1995b) cites Nancy Dupree (Vice-Chairperson of the Society for the Preservation of Afghanistan’s Cultural Heritage) referring to the Begram collection as "The most spectacular archaeological find of the 20th century" (p.51).

According to Rashid (1995a), another excavation was the Bactrian gold discovered in 1978. A Russian expedition made the Bactrian discovery. Dupree (1996) suggests that the 21,000 gold objects dating from 100 BC to 100 AD discovered in 1978 at Tilla Teppe, northern Afghanistan were displayed in 1991 to Western Diplomats in Kabul. Rashid (1995a) adds, "The gold was then packed into crates and moved for safety to a vault in the Presidential Palace in central Kabul" (p.61).

However, today the first Afghan National Museum is just crumbled walls and mere rubble. Magnificent palaces and mansions have been destroyed; historical monuments have been shelled. Afghanistan has lost its past to war, and its future is merely ruins and devastation. Every item of state treasure has been smashed, sold, or stolen. Its people and foreign powers have so systematically raped few countries.

The warring parties in Kabul saw those treasures in the museum as ready cash, to be blasted out of their vaults and hauled away to buyers across the world. According to Rashid (1995b), "A trail of looted artifacts stretching from middlemen and antique dealers in Kabul, Peshawar, and Islamabad to provide art collectors in Tokyo, Islamabad, Jidda, Kuwait, London, and Geneva exists" (p.51).

Rashid (1995a) firmly believes that the looters knew precisely what to take, what to break and to find the arts as if they had a sketched map. Each new victor would come to the museum doors to collect their spoils. Dupree (1996) estimates, "about 70% of the museum's collections are now missing"(p.42). It is a saddening occasion for a nation, one that was so victorious against many foreign hands, to fall to the knees of international art dealers. In the process, more unreplaceable and precious antiquities and monuments are lost along the way.

The collection can never be reassembled, or even located. Clara Grissmann (American art historian) suggests: "If new artifacts are dug up, they will be disconnected from the past because the record here has gone" (Rashid, 1995a, p. 62).

This loss destroys significant periods in not only Afghanistan’s cultural heritage but also others it has come in contact with. Pottery from prehistory was bundled into bags like cheap china; ivory statues of Indian courtesans from the 2nd century AD stuffed into the pockets of gunmen and carted off to Pakistan to be sold for a song, eventually turning up on the worlds antique art markets for huge sums.

Global organizations are unsuccessful in trying to recover the looted artifacts, such a piece held by Nasurullah Babur (Pakistani official) who bought an object from the Begram collection for $100,000 (Rashid, 1995a).

In 1995, the historic pistol of Wazir Akbar Khan that was used to kill Gen. McNaughton at Bala-Hissar marking the end of the 1st Anglo-Afghan War was discovered in the hands of another Pakistan official (Arif, 1996). In November of 1996, other artifacts like Babur Shah's (founder of the Mogul dynasty) and Ahmad Shah Baba's (founder of the Afghan Nation) swords were looted and sold to high ranking foreign officials.

During September of 1997, the Pakistani newspaper NNI wrote about former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto being linked to looted art treasures from Afghanistan: Wajid Shamsul Hassan is accused of having given customs clearance to eight crates flown by PIA, without charge from Karachi to London in April last year. The contents are said to have included swords and antique guns.

According to an article in the French paper Le Monde, Benazir said to be a keen collector of antiquities, visited Peshawar last year, accompanied by an academic advisor, to authenticate relics from Afghanistan artifact amassed by Zardari (Bhutto's husband) left the country. According to a journalist who visited a close friend of Zardari found at his house several pieces, including guns and other weapons, that he thought might have come from[Afghanistan].

Not only antiquities, but contemporary arts such as Afghan music, films, photographs, and great Islamic literature were also among the destroyed. Also, ancient graves are being dug up for the jewels they contain. Loyd (1997) points out that the gravediggers go further to even selling the bones of Afghans for money obtained in Pakistan (p.30).

A civilization that once flourished from the land of the Afghans is presently not noticeable, and the future looks even grimmer. We might have won lots of wars, but we are losing the battle to preserve Afghanistan. The country has disintegrated socially, economically, and regionally but arguably as disastrous has been the destruction of its heritage. This unique heritage was due to Afghanistan’s position at the crossroads of commerce and conquest for thousands of years yielding to a culture that has transformed into a legendary myth and fantasy.

When will we speak out and say enough is enough? It is now our time to address our nation and the world. We must reassure our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan, that we will not let them become mere myth or legend. We must struggle to keep Afghanistan alive in every shape and form.

To do that, we need to get rid ourselves of the chips on our shoulder. If we, in the West, away from the bloodshed and misery in Afghanistan cannot come together for our nation; then we should not blame our people back home for perpetually fighting a stalemate war. We must set a model for our people we must unite for our people back home.

Afghan educators, elders, and students from all side of the political and social spectrum must get active in efforts to bring together the largest immigrant population of the world. Otherwise, we will succumb the same fate as the people and treasure back home.

Remembering #JahanaraKajjan on her birth anniversary. Hailed as the reigning queen of the stage, the glamorous movie actor, the trained singer, the fashionable modern girl, and the trendsetter, Jahanara Kajjan or Kajjan Bai, better known as Miss Kajjan was many a splendored personality. No wonder, in her heyday she was saluted as the ‘Lark of Hindi cinema’ and the ‘Beautiful Nightingale of Bengal Screen’. As a young lad in Lahore, I dimly remember, seeing her in Madan Theatres’ “Laila Majnu (1931). I recall its roaring publicity through splash of posters and eye-catching hoardings all over the city with dazzling pictures of Miss Kajjan. The novelty of Talkies was still fresh and cinema houses attracted big crowds, more so when films were packed with songs. “Laila Majnu” featuring Miss Kajjan and Master Nissar, the most popular singing pair of the stage was a spectacular success. I vaguely remember, a scene from the film, where Majnu (Nissar) looking for Laila (Kajjan) in the wilderness sings Laila Laila Pukarun Mai Ban Mein, Laila Pyari Basi More Man Main. “I am crying for Laila in the jungle when the beloved Laila is residing in my heart”. Those days, there were hardly any film magazines and the practice of publishing spicy interviews of stars was still a couple of decades away. There is a mention of Kajjan by Kathryn Hanson, a leading scholar of South Asian theatre history in her book “Stages of Life” (2011). Jahanara Kajjan (1915-1945) is pronounced there as ‘Popular singing actress, daughter of the courtesan Suggan and the Nawab of Bhagalpur’. There is a question mark on her date of birth since no authentic information is available. This applies practically to all female artistes from the professional class, who turned famous as theatre and cinema actors. However, the circumstantial evidence culled from Kajjan’s stage and cinema career in the late 1920s and early ’30s and also some reference to her love affairs during that period leads us to conjecture that she was born sometime around 1910. Kajjan belonged to a family of professional artistes, who carried the tag of tawaifs or courtesans. They were also invited by the princely courts and aristocracy to perform at their private mehfils. With their refined manners they provided stimulating company to the male elite. An established code of conduct ruled out marriage in their profession but they were allowed to have a liaison with a chosen patron. Kajjan’s mother Suggan apparently had one such relationship with her father. The anti-nautch campaign at the beginning of the 20th Century denigrated the singing and dancing profession. Some, among them, became gramophone singers or theatre stage actors. Kajjan received education at home and even learnt English. Well versed in Urdu literature, she wrote poetry under pen name “Ada” and some of her poems were published in Urdu magazines. She received intensive training in Hindustani classical music from Ustad Hussain Khan of Patna. Noting her mastery of ragas, her mellifluous voice and also her charming looks, she was hired by a theatre company at Patna. She is said to have performed on stage for three days at a fee of Rs.250 per show. She enchanted the audience with her golden voice. This paved the way to her joining Alfred Company owned by Madan Theatres of Calcutta. According to Fida Hussain, a Parsi theatre legend, “He worked with actress Jahanara Kajjan becoming her director and leading man”. Kajjan attained name and fame as a very popular singer and actor of the stage. The advent of talkies in 1931 brought a revolution in the entertainment scene. The phenomenal success of the first talkie “Alam Ara” in March 1931 inspired a number of producers to make their “all talking, singing, dancing films”. Madan Theatres of Calcutta, were already in the field and were only a few weeks behind when they hit the screen with “Shirin Farhaad” based on the stage play scripted by the renowned playwright Agha Hashar Kashmiri. “Shirin Farhad” beat “Alam Ara” as it was more refined technically and featured 42 songs by Kajjan and Nissar, already popular singing pair of the stage. The film was a tremendous success across India with Kajjan emerging as the first superstar of Hindi cinema. It is said that a tongawala in Lahore pawned his horse to see “Shirin Farhad” 22 times. It was followed by another super hit “Laila Majnu”, featuring the same duo Kajjan and Nissar. Another film that created history was “Indrasabha” based on the play written by Agha Hassan Amanat, the court poet of Wajid Ali Shah, the last Nawab of Awadh. Loaded with 71 songs, the film still holds the world record as “film with most number of songs”. The film with duration of three and half hours (211 minutes) was entirely in verse and Kajjan sang several songs, ensuring its roaring success all over the country. Some of the most popular numbers sung by Kajjan were — “Toone to mora man har leeno more banke saanwaria ” (Oh my dearest you have captivated my heart); “Chaman ko yun mere saqi ne maikhana bana diya ” (My wine server has turned the garden into a tavern); “Kab se khadi hun terey dwar, bula le mohe balam re ” (My love please call me as I have been waiting at your door for so long). Some of her other memorable movies were “Bilwamangal”, “Shakuntala”, “Alibaba aur Chalis Chor”, “Aankh ka Nasha”, “Zehari Saanp”, etc. By mid 1930s, the early enthusiasm for song-dramas, mythological stories and Persian love tales was wearing off and many film producers were forced to close shop, Madan Theatres among them. The classical numbers sung by the likes of Kajjan were losing their appeal and so was her theatrical acting style. She failed to receive any offers from the new producers. A wealthy woman, she stayed on in Calcutta, but after a couple of years with depleting resources, she was compelled to move to Bombay. Her Parsi connection, especially with Sohrab Modi, the doyen of Parsi theatre, helped her to get some acting assignments there. Kajjan’s career in Bombay was short-lived from 1941 to 1944, during which she appeared in six marginal films, with the exception of Sohrab Modi’s “Prithvi Vallabh”. Further, she was given only minor roles and got little chance to display her singing calibre. She lived a lavish life at Calcutta. Fond of pets, she even had two tiger cubs for some time. Kajjan was cited as a fashionable modern girl. A studio portrait of late 1920s shows her wearing makeup, ear rings, nose pin with finger waived hair, dressed in a sari with laced blouse. This very photograph was carried in an advertisement for face powder and hair products by “The Crisis (New York) 1928”. Kajjan had learnt western dancing and was a regular visitor to Calcutta Club, mixing freely with the elite gentry. On a personal front, she had a colourful life, with roaring love affairs with many of her co-stars. Fida Hussain, her theatre director and co-star openly speaks about the ups and downs of his romantic relationship with her. She was also intimately involved with Najmul Hassan, a very handsome actor of his time, who landed at New Theatres, Calcutta after being sacked by Bombay Talkies for his notorious affair with the leading star Devika Rani. LAHORE, February 05:

Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar, provincial ministers, members of the provincial assembly, PTI leaders, workers and a large number of citizens expressed complete solidarity with the Kashmiris at a public gathering held at Faisal Chowk on the occasion of Kashmir Solidarity Day on Wednesday. Thousands of people lodged a strong protest against Indian brutalities. People held flags of Pakistan and Azad Kashmir and chanted slogans of ‘long live Pakistan’ and ‘Kashmir will become Pakistan.’ On this occasion, anthems of Pakistan and Azad Kashmir were also aired. Later, the siren was blared and one minute silence was observed. Khateeb Bashahi Mosque Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad led a special prayer for the success of freedom struggle of Kashmiri people and end to Indian occupation.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Usman Buzdar said that Kashmir Solidarity Day was observed by the whole nation and added that purpose of celebrating this day is to show Indian wicked face to the world. 185 days have been passed to the continued lockdown of Indian armed forces in Occupied Kashmir and the whole of Pakistan is agitating against this brutality, he added. He regretted that India, which claims to be the biggest democracy in the world, blatantly violated all democratic norms in Occupied Kashmir. India badly demeaned its democratic and secular identity by abrogating articles 35A and 370 of the Indian constitution, he added. The nation has given a strong message to the world that Pakistan firmly stands with the Kashmiris. Pakistan and Kashmir are siamese twins and this peaceful agitation is writing on the wall for the Modi government, he added. Usman Buzdar said that victory will be the fate of the Kashmiris. Prime Minister Imran Khan fought the case of Kashmir with absolute courage and no other leader fought this case as like Imran khan who raised a strong voice in support of the Kashmiris. He said that Quaid-e-Azam termed Kashmir as the jugular vein of Pakistan and we cannot deviate from the Kashmir cause. Pakistan will always be standing with the Kashmiris and all-out support will be continued, added Usman Buzdar. The chief minister emphasized that Kashmiris will succeed in their just struggle very soon adding that Pakistanis’ hearts beat in unison with their Kashmiri brethren. Lahore has a special relation with Kashmir and the strong relationship between Pakistan and Kashmir is unbreakable, concluded the chief minister. President PTI Central Punjab Ejaz Chaudhary, Zaheer Abbas Khokhar and member legislative assembly of Azad Kashmir Ghulam Mohyuddin Dewan also spoke on this occasion.

CM CHAIRS MEETING TO REVIEW ANTI-POLIO STEPS AND SAFETY FROM CORONAVIRUS

LAHORE, February 05:

Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar chaired a meeting at his office on Wednesday to review anti-polio steps and arrangements for safety from coronavirus. At the outset, the chief minister directed to utilize every possible resource to make Punjab polio-free and added that surfacing of polio cases in some cities is a very serious issue. Role of the community is very important for making polio-free Punjab and administrating anti-polio drops to the children at entry points of the province should be ensured. He directed that special focus should be paid to high-risk districts. Recruitment of 3600 anti-polio workers has been allowed and action will be initiated where polio case is reported. He reiterated that saving the children from deadly diseases, like polio, is an important obligation and added that organized efforts are needed because children’s safe future is important. The chief minister asked the parents to vaccinate their children and no child should remain deprived of anti-polio vaccination. He emphasized to work with renewed vigour to achieve anti-polio targets as there is no room for any leniency. Similarly, every possible precaution should be adopted for safety from coronavirus threat and the health department should keep a vigilant eye to the situation. He directed to set up an isolation ward for suspected patients in PKLI and announced to visit the health department’s control room set up for coronavirus. Secretary Primary and Secondary Healthcare briefed about steps taken for safety from coronavirus and eradication of polio. Hadiqa Kiani (Urdu: حدیقہ کیانی ‎) is a Pakistani singer, songwriter, and philanthropist. She has received numerous local and international awards and also has performed at the most prestigious venues in the world, including Royal Albert Hall and The Kennedy Center.

In 2006, Kiani received the highest Pakistan civilian award, the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, for her contributions to the field of music. In 2010, she was appointed as a United Nations Development Programme Goodwill ambassador, making her the first woman in Pakistan to a Goodwill ambassador to the United Nations

In 2016, Kiani was titled as one “Pakistan’s Most Powerful and Influential Women” by the country’s leading news group, Jang Group of Newspapers, as part of their “Power” edition.

Early life and career

Kiani was born in Rawalpindi as the youngest of 3 siblings, her older brother (Irfan Kiani) and sister (Sasha). Her father died when she was 3 years old. Her mother, poet Khawar Kiani, was the principal of a government girls’ school. Seeing her musical ability, Khawar enlisted Kiani in the Pakistan National Council of the Arts. She received early education in music from her teacher, Madam Nargis Naheed. While studying at Viqar-un-Nisa Noon Girls High School, Kiani represented Pakistan at international children festivals in Turkey, Jordan, Bulgaria, and Greece, winning various medals along the way and performing for thousands around the world. Kiani was also a part of Sohail Rana’s children’s program “Rang Barangi Dunya,” a weekly musical on PTV. As an eighth grader, Kiani moved from her birthplace Rawalpindi to Lahore where she continued her classical training by Ustad Faiz Ahmed Khan and Wajid Ali Nashad. Kiani went on to graduate from Pakistan’s top institutions, earning her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Kinnaird College for Women University and her Masters in Psychology from the historic Government College University (Lahore). In the early 1990s, Kiani came onto TV to host a children’s music program called “Angan Angan Taray”. In the 3 1⁄2-year-long run, she had sung over one thousand songs for children while hosting the show alongside renowned music composer Amjad Bobby and later on with music composer Khalil Ahmed. Owing to the sheer number of songs Kiani sang during this program, she was presented with the title of “A+ artist” on behalf of PTV joining the likes of Noor Jehan, Naheed Akhtar, and Mehnaz. Kiani also appeared as a VJ for a music charts program called Video Junction on NTM. Kiani began to sing songs as a playback singer for movies in the early 90s, most notably was the hit Pakistani movie called Sargam, which was starring and being composed by Adnan Sami Khan. The same year, she received various awards for her playback singing including the prestigious Nigar Awards for Best Female Playback Singer.

Albums

1995: Raaz

In 1995, Kiani received the “NTM Viewer’s choice award” for the Best Female Singer of Pakistan. In the same Award show, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khanwas awarded as the Best Male Singer of Pakistan. The following year, Kiani released her debut album Raaz (Secret) in 1996. The album spawned a string of radio-friendly hits and received positive reviews. Some argue that the reason the album did well was because it was not common for female singers (from educated/non-musical backgrounds) to release albums in Pakistan. Also, she was the first female singer to release a pop album after the former pop singer, Nazia Hassan, gave up her musical career. Kiani’s ability to sing in other dialects was also presented to the country through the hit Kashmiri folk song “Maane Di Mauj. Her increasing popularity was further highlighted in January 1997, when Kiani became the first Asian singer to perform at the British National Lottery Live on BBC One (a program with an estimated viewership 16.6 million at that time). Afterwards she worked on two more shows with Bally Sagoo for BBC and ITV before going on her first U.S. tour in 1997. Her U.S. tour covered 15 states and a few cities in Canada.The same year Kiani performed many other international events in the United Kingdom, Australia, and China. By the summer of 1997, Kiani was representing Pakistan as the only Pakistani singer to perform at “Celebration Hong Kong 97” at Happy Valley Race Course, alongside other International singers like Lisa Stansfield, Wet Wet Wet, Michael Learns to Rock, All 4 One and The Brand New Heavies, an event to celebrate Hong Kong’s freedom from the United Kingdom. Kiani is the first mainstream Pakistani singer to ever perform in Hong Kong. By the end of the year she became the first Asian female singer ever to be signed by Pepsi Cola International. She was the second international female artist in the world to be signed, the first being Gloria Estefan.

1998: Roshni

In 1998, Kiani recorded the official theme song for the 1999 Cricket World Cup. The Pepsi sponsored song was titled Intehai Shauq, written by Kiani’s mother, Khawar Kiani, and composed and produced by the famed Nizar Lalani. The song was filmed by Jami and Imran Baber and proved to be an instant success that captivated the country with what was noted as incredibly motivational imagery and lyrics. Amidst the World Cup recording, Kiani released her second album, titled Roshni. The third single from the album was Dupatta. The video was inspired by the sci-fi film The Matrix. The song is listed in the Twenty Best Pop Songs Ever for Pakistan, where it is positioned at number 15. The success of the song was attributed to its quasi-bhangra rhythm with “fat, funky techno beats” and Kiani’s “dreamy-meets-husky vocals” which made the results “stunning”. In the wake of “Dupatta”‘s, success Kiani became widely accepted as the country’s leading female vocalist. Capitalizing on “Dupatta’s” success, Kiani went on to release two other moderate hits, “Roshni”, and “Woh Kaun Hai”. Her sixth single off the album, “Boohey Barian” went on to become an even bigger hit for her than “Dupatta”. To date, “Boohey Barian” is widely accepted as Kiani’s best single ever and noted as one of the most prominent Pakistani songs of all time. Roshni sold over a million copies in Pakistan alone, certifying it as “Platinum”. The album is listed in “The 20 Best Local Pop Albums Ever” for the country, positioned at No.15. Kiani is just one of two female singers in the entire list. Kiani’s success led to her being signed by Unilever for celebrity endorsement of Lipton in 2001. In 2002, she is signed again by Unilever for SunsilkShampoo after the results of Unilever’s national survey to find the “Most Popular Woman of Pakistan”. Throughout the early 2000s, she performed live concerts in the US, Canada, UK, Middle East, Far East, Australia, Norway, Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey.

2002: Rung

Kiani released her third album Rung in September 2002. She returned to promote the album in June 2003, almost 10 months after she’d released “Yaad Sajan” with a new single “Ranjhan” and several stage performances and tours around the country. She then released other singles off the album throughout 2003 and 2004. These included “Jogi Bun Kay Aa”, “Mahi” and “Dholan”. In “Jogi Bun Kay Aa” Kiani plays various women’s roles, including a traditional Japanese, an Arab, and a tribal woman. She played a vampire in her video for “Mahi” which was directed by top director Asim Raza. The video showed that it is harmful to judge people of different faiths and castes, and also bad to stereotype. It was the highest budgeted video of the year 2003. During this time, Kiani was in the midst of her first divorce, however Kiani’s album sales continued to pick up through 2003 and 2004. In 2004, she received the Best Female Pop Singer Award by Indus Music, the first 24-hour music channel of Pakistan. Asim Raza won an award for best video for directing her critically acclaimed video Mahi. Shortly after the release of Rung, Kiani was mentioned in “Pakistani Pop’s 10 most Influential Acts Ever”, in which she was ranked ninth. She is also one of just two female singers in the list, the other being Nazia Hassan. A UK-based Magazine declared Kiani the 22nd greatest music maker of South Asia out of a total of fifty artists, also mentioning how she raised the standard of music videos in the country. Several years after the release of Rung, leading Indian Sufi singer “Harshdeep Kaur” covered Kiani’s self composed “Jogi Bun Kay Aa” on a leading Indian television show. The lyrics of the song were originally written by Kiani’s mother and poet Khawar Kiani.

2007: Rough Cut

In 2007, Kiani released her fourth studio album, Rough Cut, a collaboration with Aamir Zaki. With the release of Rough Cut, Kiani became the first mainstream Pakistani artist to release an album completely in English. Prior to the release of the album, Kiani and Zaki teamed up for an Urdu song, written by Zaki, titled “Iss Baar Milo”. The video was directed by Jami (director) and starred Humayun Saeed opposite of Kiani. “Iss Baar Milo”‘s video production and acting performances, notably Kiani’s portrayal of a “schizophrenic” patient in a Pakistani mental hospital received a great response. The video was a major milestone in the Pakistani music industry, winning Kiani and Jami the title of “Best Video” by MTV Pakistan. In April 2007, Kiani released the first official single for the album, titled “Living This Lie”. The same week, Kiani was named “Hotstepper of the week” for The News by Jang Group. The article also stated that ultimately, “as long as Hadiqa is around, there is still hope for women in the patriarchal music world of Pakistan.” “Living This Lie” was nominated and won for “Best English Song” at “The Musik Awards” in 2007. Kiani was also nominated for Best Female Singer in the same award show.

2009: Aasmaan

In June 2009, Kiani switched record labels to Fire Records and released her fifth studio album, titled Aasmaan. In the album, she sang in Urdu, Punjabi, Hindko, Pashto, and Persian. The first single of the album was “Sohnya”. The official video of “Sohnya” premiered a day before Kiani released the album. Following the release, the song+video stayed on the Aag top 10 Charts for over a month resulting in Kiani receiving a Shield from Aag10 for being the Artist of the Month.[39] The album itself stayed Number One on the Vibes Charts of INSTEP Magazine for the entire year. By the end of 2009, Aasmaan was named the Best Album of 2009 according to sales volume, popularity and internet downloads. Every single released from Aasmaan reached number one. “Sohnya” was number one AAG10 Charts for over a month and was titled the best Pop Song of 2009 according to The Nation. “Tuk Tuk” was number one on Prime TV Charts. “Az Chashme Saqi” went number one on PlayTv Charts and by the end of 2009 it was declared the third best music video of 2009.[34][40] In February 2010, Kiani released “Janan”, for which she collaborated with relatively unknown Pashto singer Irfan Khan. The song has become Kiani’s biggest hit till date and some say that it has even topped the popularity of “Boohey Barian”. The song became the first Pakistani pop song to be mentioned by the Los Angeles Times, where the newspaper said that “Janan” was what the whole country was listening to. Kiani’s rendering in the Pashto language was critically acclaimed. Some Pakhtoons even started to call her “Hadiqa Pathani,” Kiani is credited with bringing back a trend in Pakistan of embracing Pashto culture, girls started to wear Pashto style dresses imitating Kiani’s looks on the red carpet and more mainstream singers began singing in the local language. The song’s widespread popularity was credited to the fact that it broke barriers in Pakistani music, Kiani being a Punjabi singing a Pashto song and appealing to not only Pakistani Pashto audiences, but to audiences worldwide. Kiani’s “Janan” has been covered by many international singers, most noticeably by the Chinese singer Hou Wei at the grand South Asia Expo in 2014. The Chinese cover was done as a tribute to Pakistani culture which elevated the Pashto community in Pakistan while, what many say, cementing the song as a national treasure

2017: WAJD

In 2017, Kiani teamed up with her brother to launch the visual album titled “Wajd.” The album consisting of five renderings of folk songs was critically acclaimed and led Kiani to receive her first “Album of the Year” award from the Lux Style Awards 2018. Kiani’s distinct wardrobe during this album’s era were noted by the press and led her to win “Most Stylish Singer” at the Hum Style Awards 2018. Her style led her to be the muse for high street brands such as Generation[48] and Bonanza and coutiers like Ali Xeeshan.

Playback singing and musical contributions

In 1995, Kiani signed a string of Pakistani films as a playback singer, most notably the Adnan Sami Khan film Sargam (1995). Sargam went on to win various awards for Kiani, including that of “Best Female Playback Singer” at the prestigious Nigar Awards. Since Sargam however, Kiani has been mostly absent from playback singing in Pakistan. The exception came in 2011 when she became one of the primary playback singers for Shoaib Mansoor’s film Bol (film). The film featured four of Kiani’s songs, two of which were collaborations with Atif Aslam. The soundtrack of the film saw positive reviews and received four Lux Style Awards nominations for Kiani and Aslam. In 2006, Kiani was featured on UK based producer Khiza’s album “Loyal To The Game”‘s lead single, “Mehr Ma”. The song was an instant success in Pakistan, and was seen as a great return to pop music for Kiani after her ballads in Rung. In the video, Kiani was seen with different hairstyles and outfits. The reviews for the song were favorable, one source said that “Mehr Ma”, which starts off the album, is easily the best track on it. With Kiani showcasing her top-notch vocals and the music, which remains hip-hopish yet very desi, thanks to the usage of sitar, tabla makes it an excellent number.” Kiani also performed the song at the 2006 Lux Style Awards. Over the years, Kiani has provided vocals for a select list of TV Dramas such as the critically acclaimed 2011 Drama Zindagi Gulzar Hai’s title track with Ali Zafar and the 2006 “Aas Pass” with Atif Aslam. In May 2012, Kiani appeared on the 5th season of Rohail Hyatt’s Coke Studio. Performing renditions of Bulleh Shah and Amir Khusro to positive reviews. In 2016, Kiani lent her voice to the character of Meeran, portrayed by Urwa Hocane, on the HUM TV drama “Udaari.” The title track of the drama was sung by Kiani, featuring Farhan Saeed and production by Sahir Ali Bagga. The title track topped the music charts while the drama was critically acclaimed and an instant hit for viewers. The drama was a first for Pakistani television, In 2018, Kiani joined the cast of 3 Bahadur: Rise of the Warriors for the title song . The animated film was produced and directed by Pakistan’s first Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Notable performances

Apart from studio recordings, in 2005 Kiani was appointed by the government of Pakistan as an official representative of the country. On 11 August 2005, Kiani performed in Nagoya for the Prime Minister of Japan Mr. Junichirō Koizumi . Kiani then performed in Toronto on 14 Aug 2005 by request of The Pakistani Consulate. She performed in Houston on 13 August 2005. The show was at Sam Houston Race Park, and it was attended by over 15000 people. Chief guest of the show was Sheila Jackson Lee who is a member of the US House of Representatives. In the same month, she performed at the Mets Shea Stadium New York on 18 August 2005. She closed the month of August with a performance at the Pakistan Parade in New York on 28 August 2005. On 2 October 2005, Kiani performed in Malaysia at the newly built Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpurdowntown. The Honorary Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr.Shaukat Aziz was the chief guest of the show. The show was part of Expo 2005 in Malaysia. Important business and political personalities from both countries attended the show. Kiani sang a song in Malay to show respect to the Malaysian people. Kiani represented Pakistan on the 25th Anniversary of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) in Turkey. Islamic Countries such as Azerbaijan, U.A.E, Iran, Qatar, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Kuwait, Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Turkey, Pakistan and Yemen took part in the celebrations. The event was organised by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. She performed at the AKM Opera House on 23 November 2005. Among the audience were musicians from various countries. The biggest surprise for the audience was said to be when Kiani sang “Sanalama” (Turkish song of Living Legend “Sezen Aksu”). She told the audience that as Turkey stood beside Pakistan in good and bad times, she wanted to convey the love of Pakistani people for the Turks. She also told the audience that she visited Turkey as a child star in 80s and represented Pakistan in the International Children’s Festival in Turkey so she had beautiful childhood memories associated with Turkey. The audience gave her a standing ovation at the end of her performance, The Mayor of Istanbul appreciated her and presented a bouquet of flowers to her. After her performance she received invitations to participate in the upcoming Art festivals in various countries such as Iran, Syria, Qatar and Lebanon. During her stay in Istanbul she officially visited various historical sites in Turkey and conveyed the love of Pakistan for Turkey. Her performance in Istanbul made headlines in various Turkish Newspapers. Kiani performed in China for the Chinese Premier on 21 Feb 2006. The following month, she performed for President George W. Bush on 4 March 2006. Commenting on her performance, Bush said “Ms. Hadiqa Kiani is extremely talented and should sing here (United States) more.” She then performed for the Crown Prince of Brunei Al-Muhtadee Billah Bolkiah on 29 May 2006. Kiani performed as per the request of former First Lady of the United States, Laura Bush on 21 September 2006 at The Kennedy Center, in Washington, D.C. She closed the year by performing for Prince Charles of the United Kingdom and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall on 30 October 2006, and again in China for the Chinese president on 23 November 2006. On 19 May 2007, Kiani performed at Dead Sea in Jordan for 28 Heads of States at the World Economic Forum on the Middle East and North Africa. Her performance took place on the second day of the three-day event while American singer Lionel Richie performed the first day. Among Kiani’s setlist for the night was the Arabic song titled “Ah W Nos” by Nancy Ajram which Kiani covered and then sang again the following year in Pakistan. In August 2007, Kiani was one of the headliners for the London Day Parade at Trafalgar Square, London which was broadcast by Geo TV to celebrate 60 years of Independence for Pakistan.] Kiani was the only singer who sang completely live that day. She was also part of closing the show with the popular patriotic song “Jeevay Pakistan” alongside Ali Zafar. Kiani has continued performing throughout Pakistan for various companies, including Pepsi and Samsung. Most notably, in 2016 Kiani performed to positive reviews at the Inter Provincial Games in Pakistan, initiated by President Mamnoon Hussain as a sporting event to support the male and female athletes of Pakistan. At the end of 2016, upon the Turkish President Erdoğan’s arrival to Pakistan, Kiani was invited to perform at the historic Lahore fort, performing along with folk legend Arif Lohar to welcome the world leader. Kiani’s performance was noted as “enthralling” and “melodious.”

Philanthropy and social causes

In March 2007, Kiani was one of the many artists featured in a widely popular track called “Yeh Hum Naheen”. In this song, various Pakistani artists joined to send out a message that the stereotype of Pakistanis is not correct and that they oppose Terrorism. The song also conveys an anti-terrorism sentiment in the music video and supported the anti-terrorism campaign, Yeh Hum Naheen, which Kiani is heavily involved with. Other artists in the song include Ali Zafar, Shafqat Amanat Ali and the Strings duo. The song was picked up by international networks such as Fox News and BBC and amassed a significant number of downloads. In August 2010, Kiani and her siblings worked with local Pakistanis along with the Pakistan Army to provide clothing, water, food and shelter to the flood victims of Pakistan following the devastating 2010 Pakistan floods. Kiani also appeared in Geo Tv’s telethon “Pukaar” along with Pop starAli Zafar to appeal for donations. In collaboration with Pakistan Army, Kiani made visits to Multan Relief Camp, Basti Kalraywala, Muzaffarabadand other flood hit areas, personally distributing goods to the affectees. On 8 November 2010, Kiani was appointed United Nations Development Programme Goodwill ambassador after being recognized for her individual philanthropic efforts. Following being appointed, Kiani continued to construct housing facilities in Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwafor the flood victims till she completed over 250 houses. Nowshera was one of the worst flood hit areas in the country. In the beginning of 2015, Kiani was chosen on to be one of Pond’s Miracle Mentors as an initiative to highlight and support strong women in the patriarchal Pakistani society alongside nine other renowned and influential women. Later that month Kiani stood up again to voice her views on women in leadership at the Women Leadership Summit 2015 with then wife of former cricketer Imran Khan, Reham Khan and various other women who had achieved success in their respective fields including Muniba Mazari and Nadia Jamil. The summit brought international and local voices together as an act towards shedding light to the issue of gender discrimination in the workplace. Kiani works regularly with the Edhi Foundation and has been involved with many other charitable organizations, including Muslim Hands, SOS Villages and UNICEF. She has also campaigned and been the ambassador for Shaukat Khanum, OXFAM International, and since 2010 the United Nations. In November 2015 it was announced that Kiani would speak at TEDXKinnaird on the role of women in Pakistani society. After taking a stance with the award-winning project, Udaari that highlighted the social issue of sexual abuse against children in the Pakistani community in 2016, Kiani took a stance against the issue again in 2017. Kiani gained attention when criticizing actor Yasir Hussain at the 5th annual Hum TV Awards for joking about child molestation. In a statement on social media, Kiani stated that the comments made by Hussain were “disgusting,” while also taking a stance against the entertainment industry for supporting the actor. In July 2017, Kiani teamed up with Nestlé to introduce socially responsible initiatives in Pakistan regarding early childhood delelopment.

Pakistan Idol

Pakistan Idol is a Pakistani reality singing competition that is part of the Idols franchise created by Simon Fuller and owned by 19 Entertainmentand FremantleMedia.It is the 50th adaptation of the familiar reality competition format introduced in the British series Pop Idol in 2001. It was developed for the Pakistani entertainment market by Geo TV. The show brought together Junoon front man Ali Azmat, comic Bushra Ansari, and Kiani. The first season of the show was heavily controversial but proved to be the most watched entertainment show in Pakistani history.

Recognition

In March 2006, Kiani was presented with the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan, one of the highest civil awards of the country, in acknowledgement of her services in the field of music and for shining an encouraging light on the country for over a decade. The award was announced on 14 August 2005 but the ceremony was performed on 23 March of the next year. In 2015, Kiani was declared as one of “Pakistan’s Most Powerful and Influential Women” of all time by The News International under the Jang Group umbrella. On 15 August 2015, Daily Times (Pakistan) listed Kiani as the 15th part of their 30 name list of celebrated Pakistanis who have brought a great deal of pride for their country, other names on the list titled “Pride of Pakistan” included Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Malala Yousafzai,[and national hero Abdul Sattar Edhi. In April 2015, Kiani headlined the Music Mela and introduced her new Qawwali sound at the 3-day festival arranged by the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan. The “Pop Queen” of Pakistan debuted herself as a Qawwali artist to positive feedback Upon the end of the Mela, Kiani announced that she would be working on her sixth studio album titled “Wajd”.

Personal life

Kiani resides in Pakistan with her mother, who has been paralyzed since 2006. She has adopted a child as her son in 2005 from the Edhi Foundation after the 2005 earthquake. Later, she married a UK-based Pakistani businessman, Syed Fareed Sarwary. In 2008, she divorced Sarwary.

Panamagate: JIT finds disparities in Sharif family income

In a setback to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, a Supreme Court ordered probe panel in its final report on the Panamagate today recommended the filing of a corruption case against him and his children after finding "significant" disparities in their income and actual wealth.

The six-member Joint Investigation Team (JIT) that probed the Sharif family's business dealings in its report submitted to the apex court recommended that a corruption case should be filed against Sharif and his sons Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz, as well as daughter Maryam Nawaz, under the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) ordinance 1999.

The report, however, was slammed by the Nawaz Sharif government as "trash" with Sharif's close aide and minister for development Ahsan Iqbal in press conference with other ministers, saying they will challenge the report in the Supreme Court and will "completely expose and unveil its contradictions and falsifications".

Sharif's daughter Maryam also rejected the report, saying, "JIT report REJECTED. Every contradiction will not only be contested but decimated in SC. NOT a penny of public exchequer involved."

The JIT report said the assets of all four respondents were found to be more than the sources of their income.

"Significant gap/disparity amongst the known and declared sources of income and the wealth accumulated by the Respondent No. 1, 6, 7 and 8 have been observed," the JIT observed in its concluding remarks.

Respondent 1 refers to Prime Minister Sharif; Respondent 6 was Maryam; Respondent 7 Hussain; while Respondent 8 was Hassan.

The report said the financial structure and health of companies in Pakistan having linkages to the Sharif family also do no substantiate their wealth.

It also highlighted "irregular movement" of huge sums of money in the form "loans and gifts" between Sharif and his youngest son from various companies set up in Saudi Arabia, the UK and the UAE.

The report said the role of off-shore companies is critical as they have been identified to be linked with their businesses in UK.

The JIT also said that the Sharifs were unable to provide substantive evidence of a reliable money trail, used to buy expensive properties in London.

Sharif, 67, who has denied money-laundering allegations against him and his family, today held consultations with his close aides after the report was filed with the court.

Sharif's close aide and minister for development Iqbal later said, "If you review this report, it has no logical argument neither it quoted authentic sources nor material, but is based on things that have no authenticity before the law. Therefore, we are rejecting this report, terming it rubbish."

Iqbal, while announcing that his party will challenge the report before the apex court, said, "We not only condemn this report but will completely expose and unveil its contradictions and falsification before the Supreme Court. We will demolish this report."

Iqbal said the report was based on accusations leveled by Imran and his party and there was nothing new in it.

Zafarullah Khan, another close aide of Sharif, said, "It is a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf report and not JIT report...It is Imran Nama."

He said that the Supreme Court bench will consign the report to a "trash bin, where it rightfully belongs".

Earlier, JIT chief Wajid Zia presented the 10-volume report along with evidence to the three-member special bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justice Ejaz Afzal, Justice Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijazul Ahsan.

The court ordered that its copies should be provided to the parties in the case, including Sharif family.

However, JIT chief Zia asked the court that its 10th volume of the report should not be made public as it consists of correspondence with a foreign government. The bench has adjourned the hearing till Monday.

The six-member JIT was set up in May by the Supreme Court with the mandate to probe the Sharif family for allegedly failing to provide the trail of money used to buy properties in London in 1990s.

The JIT has also probed several serving and former officials in connection with the case.

The six-member JIT included Federal Investigation Agency's (FIA) Additional Director General Wajid Zia, Military Intelligence's Brig Kamran Khurshid, National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) Director Irfan Naeem Mangi, State Bank of Pakistan's Amer Aziz, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan's (SECP) Executive Director Bilal Rasool and Inter- Services Intelligence's Brig Muhammad Nauman Saeed.

Last year, the Panama Papers revealed that three of Prime Minister Sharif's children owned offshore companies and assets not shown on his family's wealth statement. The assets in question include four expensive flats in Park Lane, London.

The top court took up the case in October last year on petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Awami Muslim League and Jamaat-e-Islami and reserved the verdict in February after conducting hearings on a daily basis.

The JIT questioned Sharif family including the Prime Minister, his younger brother and Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif, sons Hassan and Hussain, daughter Maryam, son-in-law Captain Safdar, cousin Tariq Shafi and close relative Ishaq Dar.

It also probed several serving and former officials.

Meanwhile, Sharif's rival Imran told the media that the PML-N chief should resign as prime minister.

"There is no need of further trial or proceedings. He should go away and should be barred from leaving the country along with other family members," he said.
