Waipoua Forest and Hokianga This was our first stop on our tour north of Auckland and the long drive up was well worth the incredible scenery. Our first stop was the Waipoua Forest where there were lots of huge kauri trees. We trekked in various different directions and saw Tane Mahuta, the lord of the forest which is the 4th largest tree in the world! We also saw a glimpse of Te Matua Ngahere, father of the forest, the Yakas tree and the Four sisters trees - we couldn't believe how big they all were. After this we drove to Hokianga which was a beautiful bay that we had incredible views of as we drove down into it. We enjoyed walking along the beach and watching the locals show us their bombing skills!

Am 09.01 sind wir von unserem Campingplatz bis nach Opononi gefahren. Das Wetter an der Düne war sehr bewölkt und von dem Hafen aus war die Sicht auf die Düne auch nicht so gut. Als wir jedoch durch unseren Reiseführer einen Aussichtspunkt fanden, hatten wir eine gute Sicht auf die Düne und auch auf die neben anliegende Bucht. Dort liefen wir noch ein bisschen rum und sahen uns noch Felsen aus Sand an, danach fuhren wir zum Waipoua Forest um dort die Kauri Trees zu besichtigen. Die uralten Bäume stammen aus der Zeit bevor Neuseeland besiedelt wurde und haben in der Mythologie der Maori auch ihren Platz. Der höchste Baum der sogenannte ''godfather'' hat eine Höhe von 51 Metern und einen Umfang von 13 Metern. Somit sind die Bäumer sehr eindrucksvoll. Wir fuhren später dann zu einem See westlich von Kaihu bei diesem hielten wir uns relativ kurz auf um zu schwimmen etwas zu essen und dann ca 20km Östlich von Whangarei zu einem Campingplatz zu fahren. Auf diesem war der größte teil der Menschen deutsch, der Rest war französisch. Der Campingplatz hatte eine wunderschöne Aussicht auf das Meer und die Berge.

Am 10.01. waren wir dann in den Abbey Caves, drei Höhlen, die in der Landschaft im Stein sind. Dort waren wir in den Höhlen und danach dann in Whangarei in einem ''Native Bird Resurrection Center'' dort waren Tui, die gesprochen haben, Wood Pigeons (Neuseeländische Tauben) diese sind größer als Hühner und haben optisch einige Unterschiede zu den Typischen Tauben. Danach fuhren wir wieder nach Auckland zurück um dort eine Nacht zu verbringen.

Am 11.01 fuhren wir nach Taranaki.

Tāne Mahuta is the biggest Kauri tree in the Waipoua Forest and possibly all of New Zealand! It’s name in Māori translates to “Lord of the Forest”. And it’s not hard to see why! The trunk is 13.8 meters in diameter. De todas as florestas kauri da Nova Zelândia, nenhuma é tão famosa quanto Waipoua Forest na costa oeste ao norte de Dargaville. Como o maior trecho restante da floresta nativa de Northland, Waipoua é um antigo mundo verde de árvores enormes e aves raras.
