Wagotabi is a very nice game for teaching Japanese but it's a bit stressful. Like, why do I feel like I'm going to be shot if I don't answer all the questions in the time frame? Against my Pokemon-esque rival, no less?

meanwhile in wagotabi, im feeling more comfortable with tempature words and I think I'll go back and work on giving and taking words because I straight up didn't learn those.

haven't done flashcards in a few days. I should get back to those before they pile up.

Wagotabi Preview

This is yet another entry in the edutainment sub-genre of Japanese learning games, which as usual sticks to early beginner material (N5 of the JLPT). It more or less treats learning kanji like filling a Pokedex, with a Pokemon feel to the rpg aspects of the game. There are lots of options for dialing in to specific learning goals and level (within beginners). The pedagogy is a bit erratic and I'm not sure I agree with the order of learning. I did like that it includes writing practice, which is probably more beneficial on the mobile app than on PC. There's some nice accessibility options as well: disable timers such as in "boss" battles; disable audio tests; a furigana toggle; disable text animations; remove lighting effects; and it supports both gamepad and keyboard and mouse controls.

Of the three Japanese learning games I've tried out this year in demo form, I'd put this well above Noun Town on all points. It's probably more fun than So to Speak, but I'd say the latter has much more solid educational grounding. Still, the ideal practice is the one you actually do, so this is a good addition to the mix.

51/365: 😔 i feel like i just said i hope this game has a lot of content!! im proper devastated, i am. but I still have some achievements to hunt and there's the minigames to play as well. I guess this means I should spend the time I was playing wagotabi on those flashcards I've been neglecting??
