Last week, the 2023 edition of Wacken Open Air took place, with various bands from almost all over the world competing in the W:O:A Metal Battle with a diversity from thrash metal to power metal and everything in between, including Japanese heavy metal band Phantom Excaliver. They emerged as winners after all the performances had taken place. Last year, Sable Hills were the winners. Original Instagram post.

A dude I know died yesterday. He spent the last few days comatose in a hospital after collapsing at the Wacken Metal Battle Philippines gig last Friday. Stroke, according to available information. He was in his early 40s.

We last communicated via FB on March 17 when he commented on the photo I posted of my first ever Metal Maniacs magazine. Before that we’d occasionally exchange views on comics, music and TV series. Like me, he was also a flag-carrying geek with a toy collection. Needless to say, news of his death hit me like a gut punch.

RIP, brother. At least you died doing what you love -- moshing.

What to do with this information? Whatever you want. I use some sort of scale for multiple interpretations:

-Canon(plus): Dad Rock + Metalhead (Wacken Open Air ref) and/or Grunge. Maybe listens Punk >:(, maybe not anymore or only old bands, while only maybe has clothes with bands patches.

-Canon(plus) but still boring (fuck): Listens Punk (first love: East German Punk+Classic), however no piercings and not many bands patches :(((--Extra: Friends with punks but soon drives them insane or vice versa, can't live with them for long. Conclusion: Mf still too much soldier-like.

-Fuck it, ye olde good Punk!Gil: At least some piercings, has a battle jackets and the patches aren't only music themed; in friendly terms with the locals to the point of crashing in squatted places; dude likes teaching so could impart knowledge in self-managed community services... Not too much soldier-like anymore!

Kazzek was nervous, more nervous than ever before as he checked his gear.

"Come on dude, you've don this before" he said to himself as he rushed around the stage checking if everything was in order.

He looked around at his band mates, all excited to be here, all as nervous as he was

As he grabbed his guitar to give it one more check beforethe show he remembered the day he bought it. First year of tertiary education, he wasn't even 30 standard years old and he just went to the first human concert outside their homw planet with the rast of his class

That power, that energy, those raw emotions! It was exilirating, like an Attra battle chant or a Qin-Tor hym. But it was not just the music he enjoyed.

It was everything. The communication between the band and the crowd, aproaching them as equals. It was ingenious! Encouraging the crow to sing along, getting them even more swept up in the emotions! And the bands name? "Guilty as framed"

Kazzek remembered his initial confusion at the name, thinking his translator broke. He Chuckled as he played the chorus of the first song he heard at that concert. Even with theguitare still unplugged he knew exactly how it would sound. And the lyrics. Those glorious rebellious words that took over his entire being.

Another memory rushed back as he remembered government trued to crackdown against this beautifful music, just to be met with a milions march singing the same chorus

"Do with me what you must

For I'd still die for France

In my cell I'm of no use

But history will know of me

I'M ALFRED DREYFUS"

His band mates stopped for a moment, Kazzek didn't even realize he said the last line outloud

As the band members looked ateach other a mischivous smile appeared on their faces. They were here now. They remembered palying in forbidden concerts, hiding on the roofs of buildings to avoid cops and being the first to hold a free heavy metal concert on Rizian. They were "Vengence" And they were the first Non human band to play metsl on this event

"Youre up in 20 seconds" the organizers voice pulled them back into present. The band took the positions with new found confidence. Kazzek now standing infront of a microphone and as the curtain started to lift he had only one thing to say

"WACKEN ARE YOU READY!?"

Sable Hills is a metalcore band based in Tokyo, Japan. Existing out of Takuya Mishima (vocals), Wataru Yuasa (guitar & vocals), Rict Mishima (guitar), Takuya Ueda (bass) and Keita Kondo (drums). The band formed in 2015, right after the members graduated high school. Their first EP “RESURRECTION” was released in January of 2016, but it wasn’t until their first full album “EMBERS” in 2019 that the band really started to take off. Their second album “DUALITY” was released in June of 2022, and allowed the group to expand from Japan to Europe, participating in METAL BATTLE 2022 at Wacken 2022 and coming out as the winner. A first for a Japanese band. Aside from playing at festivals all over Japan and Europe, Sable Hills also have their own event called “FRONTLINE FESTIVAL” which had it’s first edition in 2023 in 川崎CLUB CITTA (Kawasaki CLUB CITTA) with about a 1,000 attendees. After the interview we’ll give you some information about the 2024 edition, as well as their appearance at Motocultor Festival in France this August. For this interview we spoke with vocalist Takuya and guitarist Rict, and they gave us quite some information about their band, their history and the metal scene in both Japan and overseas. KOBRA AND THE LOTUS Singer KOBRA PAIGE Releases Music Video For New Solo Single 'Thank You'

To celebrate the holiday season, the spirit of giving and gratitude, KOBRA AND THE LOTUS frontwoman Kobra Paige has just released a beautiful video for new track "Thank You". The clip was funded by FACTOR (The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent On Recordings),a private non-profit organization dedicated to providing assistance toward the growth and development of the Canadian music industry.

Kobra commented: "'Thank You' came from something bigger than me and it belongs to the world. That's what you will hear in the song and that is what you will witness in the music video. To feel seen for who we are is a human necessity and that is why the smallest acts of kindness can go a really long way. We impact each other, more than we realize, every single day. I have hit rock bottom with my mental health more than once and it was during those moments of quiet, loving support that I was able to hold on and not lose the battle. I can attest to how someone's kind action can change or save a life. I've chosen to release this song now because this time of year can be difficult for many and I hope this will serve as a guiding light through the darkest hours. Our world is in a state of desperate need for connection and with billions of people, we can still feel very alone. This is not a seasonal song but it is a hope-filled and deeply human, honest song.

"I couldn't be more elated/honored to be receiving national support. This is a 100% Canadian made video in my home city. My intention is to pay it forward by raising money via the video for Child Rescue Coalition, a non-profit that rescues children from child trafficking and sexual abuse. ブラジルのデスラッシュ2017年リリース8作目。1998年アルバムデビューのようなので、まあまあのペースでアルバムリリースを重ねている。なんでも2007年のWACKEN METAL BATTLEで優勝しているそうで、さすがのポピュラリティを持ち合わせた音を聴かせる。SLAYER、SEPULTURA、そしてスウェディッシュデスメタルからの影響を伺わせる志向を軸に、かなりバラエティ、起伏に富んだ曲作りがされている。この辺から末期DESULTORY、カナダSACRIFICEなんかをちょっと思い出したりも。ブラ��トが挿入される場面が少々あるので苦手な人は注意したほうがいいかもだが、日本盤で出ててもなんら遜色のない質の高さなので、パジェットのかかったスラッシュメタルが聴きたい人は買って損はないはず。
