Mercedes-Benz 230SL, 1964. The W113 series SL was introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show. Designed by Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi under the leadership of Mercedes Head of Styling Friedrich Geiger. They created its slightly concave removable hardtop that inspired the "Pagoda" nickname as its inward curve was thought to be reminiscent of Asian temples. A 230SL driven by Eugen Böhringer and Klaus Kaiser won the gruelling Spa-Sofia-Liège long-distance rally from 27 to 31 August 1963.

BMW 635 CSi E24 (1978)
We’re all allowed to have crushes. Some are healthier than others, usually the ones that fade away with time. A nice and easy reminder that you’re able to feel an unexplicable attraction to something or someone (it’s usually someone).
A recent set of posts by swissstash has made me realize that I’m still not done with this old crush that is the E24.
What worries me is that I had always thought of the E24 as a healthy crush. The one to wink at at the corner of the room, to feel a bit jealous for when others have it. Paul Bracq, its designer, is officialy one of my design heroes. He’s also responsible for the W113 MB platforms and, go figure, the TGV.

Mercedes-Benz 280SL, 1968. The ultimate version of the W113 series "pagoda" SL came with the M130 2.8 litre straight 6 engine. Mercedes had prototyped a V8 W113 but it wasn't until the R107 series arrived in 1971 that the Mercedes SL became available with a V8 engine

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a line of luxury roadster vehicles that has been a symbol of elegance, performance, and engineering excellence since its introduction in 1952
History and Evolution
The SL-Class has a rich history, with its first generation, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (W194), debuting in 1952. This model quickly became famous for its innovative gullwing doors, which allowed for easier entry into the car's cabin despite the lack of a conventional door design. It was powered by a 3.0-liter straight-six engine and was capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 mph, which was remarkable for the era.
The SL-Class continued to evolve through various generations, each introducing new advancements in design and technology. In the 1960s, the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL (W113) was introduced, featuring a more conventional roadster design and earning the nickname "Pagoda" due to its unique roof shape. This generation solidified the SL-Class as a highly sought-after luxury sports car.
The 1970s saw the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz 350 SL (R107), which would go on to become one of the longest-running models in Mercedes-Benz's history, staying in production for almost 20 years. During this period, the SL-Class became associated with sophistication and high-performance engineering, further cementing its reputation.
With the R129 generation in the 1990s, the SL-Class introduced technological advancements such as an automatically deploying rollover bar, a fully retractable hardtop (transforming it into a convertible), and advanced electronic systems. The R129 SL-Class was a favorite of car enthusiasts and celebrities alike, often seen as a status symbol.
The R231 generation, introduced in 2012, marked a new chapter for the SL-Class, with a sharper design and even more performance-oriented features. This generation also saw the introduction of the AMG variants, offering an even higher level of performance and luxury.
