You lie to yourself, and everyone else, with a fragile smile and delicate laughter. “Oh, Jihoon? I only see him as a friend.” The words flutter off your tongue like butterflies, light and airy, but they are the biggest lie you’ve ever told. Each syllable undulates with an undercurrent of desperation, a need to suppress the love that curls itself around your heart like ivy. You know the truth; your friends know the truth; even Jihoon, in the depths of his obliviousness, might feel something whispering beneath the surface.

Your days are painted in shades of yearning. Every time you catch Jihoon glancing your way, his laughter ringing like music in the air, you feel the familiar ache in your chest. He stands there, effortlessly captivating in his casual charm, and you can’t help but admire the way the world seems to orbit around him. But you have mastered the art of restraint at least, you try to convince yourself of that. You knew, early on, that this beautiful creature was simply too unattainable, an ethereal being who belonged to the limelight of the stage, while you faded gently into the shadows of his fan club.

Yet how can one merely be friends with someone who ignites a fire within you every time they reach for their drink, every time they laugh at a joke you’ve thrown, or every time he tilts his head, eyes shining with mischief? You spend your days together, sharing your laughter amidst passionate conversations, discussing dreams with glee. You’ve found yourself hanging on his every word, fretting over the inflection of his voice, scrutinizing every innocent touch as if it were a precarious promise.

Your friends notice the way your gaze lingers longer than is appropriate, the way your heart skips a beat when he walks into the room. They nudge you playfully and whisper sweet nothings, teasing your heartstrings and pulling them taut. “You love him,” they say, referring to Jihoon with fondness that stings because it’s true. But instead of gamely admitting it, you brush their concerns aside with a wave of your hand. “No, no, it’s not like that at all,” you lie once again, loving him in silence with every breath but failing to breathe the words into existence.

Then, one fateful evening, everything changes.

It was a rainy night, the kind that makes the world feel small and cozy. The sky enveloped the earth in its tender embrace, droplets cascading down panes of glass, blurring the outside world. Curious, you peek outside the window, watching a fascinating dance as water falls effortlessly from the heavens. It pulls you into a comfort zone, and all you desire is a peaceful night in a warm blanket and your favorite rom-com to escape into.

But, as fate would have it, Jihoon had plans of his own.

You receive a call at 2 a.m., your heart racing as you recognize his name lighting up your screen. “Where are you?” you whisper, the urgency pulling you to the edge of your thoughts. His slurred words dance around your ears, “Can you open the door? I need to talk to you.” A knot forms in your stomach as you scramble to gather your senses, tossing aside any lingering sleep.

As you open the door, the image that greets you is deeply romantic and utterly chaotic. Jihoon stands there, slightly disheveled, the faint smell of alcohol wafting in the air, eyes glossy and alive. Even in this state, he radiates charm you wonder for a fleeting moment if he understands the hold he has over you. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know who else to call,” he stammers, teetering slightly. Your heart thuds ominously in your chest, and all those stolen glances and hidden feelings come rushing to the surface.

He steps inside, leaning against the wall for support, his vulnerability both enchanting and terrifying. You urge him into a seat and fetch him some water, caught between laughter and concern. “You really shouldn’t drink so much,” you say, finding your voice through the whirlwind of emotions. He just grins sheepishly, mischief dancing in his luminous eyes.

And then, everything spirals out of your control.

As you sit beside him, the silence wraps around you both like a soft blanket. It’s intoxicating, the way he gazes at you, like he’s trying to piece together every fragment of your existence. And suddenly, Jihoon leans closer, his breath fanning against your skin. Your heart races an insane symphony of thumping organs, all while questioning your reality. “You know,” he murmurs, the words slurring slightly, “I don’t think you see me as a friend.”

Time hangs delicately in the air. Your mind races wildly, processing his words, replaying every moment leading up to this. The kiss deepens, and you lose yourself in his warmth, finally surrendering to the truth: you are utterly, irrevocably in love with him. It was never just friendship, not with every heartbeat echoing his name, not with the shivers that wracked your spine each time he laughed.

The vulnerability in his voice is matched by the determination in his touch, and you nod, unable to deny him or yourself. The words tumble out of him so suddenly, so raw and unfiltered, that it takes you a moment to process them. You stop moving for a second, your chest tightening as you look at him. His eyes snap open, wide and vulnerable, panic flickering across his face as if he’s afraid he’s ruined everything.

“I mean it,” he continues, his hands tightening on your waist. “I love you. I’ve loved you for so long, and seeing you like this, feeling you like this God, it’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of and more. You’re everything.”

Emotion swells in your chest, but before you can respond, Jihoon pulls you down into a searing kiss, pouring every ounce of his passion and love into it. His hands roam your body, sliding up your back, tangling in your hair, and gripping your thighs as if he can’t get enough of you. “You’re so perfect,” he murmurs against your lips, his voice trembling with sincerity. “You’re everything I’ve ever wanted. I love the way you move, the way you feel around me. Please don’t stop.”

The combination of his sweet words and the desperate edge in his voice ignites something deep inside you, and you begin to move again, faster this time, riding him with abandon. Jihoon completely loses himself, his head falling forward to rest against your chest as a cascade of moans and broken words spills from his lips.

“You’re so beautiful,” he gasps, his voice wrecked. “So fucking gorgeous. I love seeing you like this on top of me, taking me, making me feel so good. I—oh, God… please don’t stop. Don’t stop, baby. You’re going to ruin me.”

Your hands find their way to his hair, threading through the soft strands, and when you tug gently, his reaction is immediate and visceral. Jihoon cries out, his hands flying to your hips to pull you closer, harder against him. “Fuck,” he groans, his voice thick with pleasure. “Do that again. Please. Pull my hair. I love it.”

You obey, tugging a little harder this time, and Jihoon’s response is nothing short of breathtaking. You’re so fucking good to me.”

That’s all it takes to completely undo him. Jihoon’s hands grip your hips with bruising intensity, his lips crashing into yours as he thrusts up to meet your movements, his desperation driving him deeper, harder. His words come in a frantic, broken stream, a testament to how thoroughly you’ve unraveled him.

“Ride me, baby. Take what you need. I’ll give you anything everything,” he moans, his voice barely coherent. “You’re so good, so fucking good. I love you. I love you so much.”

Your pace quickens, your hands tugging at his hair as you both chase the edge together. Jihoon’s hands are everywhere on your thighs, your waist, your back, unable to stay still as he tries to memorize every moment, every sensation. His lips brush against your skin, murmuring praise and love and filthy promises that make your heart race.

When you finally fall over the edge, it’s with a shattering cry, your body trembling as waves of pleasure crash over you. The morning sunlight streams through the blinds of Jihoon’s studio, warm and golden, casting a cozy glow over the room. You’re perched on a stool near the soundboard, sipping on coffee while Jihoon hovers over his keyboard, pretending to work.

But he’s not fooling anyone.

Every few seconds, you catch him glancing your way, his lips quirking up in a grin he can’t quite suppress. He’s trying to be discreet, but his hand finds yours under the table, his thumb brushing over your knuckles in a way that sends shivers up your spine. When he’s sure no one’s looking, he leans over to press a soft, lingering kiss to your temple, his grin widening when you swat at him playfully.

“Jihoon,” you murmur, half-laughing. “Focus.”

“I am focusing,” he replies with a mock-serious expression, his voice low enough for only you to hear. “I’m focusing on how gorgeous you look right now.”

You roll your eyes, but your cheeks flush all the same. He’s incorrigible, and as much as you want to protest, you can’t deny how much you love his newfound confidence in showing you affection.

The door to the studio swings open, and his bandmates file in one by one, filling the space with their usual energy. Jihoon straightens up, trying to school his expression into something more neutral, but his hand lingers on your thigh for just a second too long before he pulls it back.

“Morning,” one of them calls, tossing a water bottle onto the couch before plopping down. Another, Mingyu, squints at Jihoon, a knowing smirk creeping across his face. “Wow, Jihoon. You look… really chipper today.”

Jihoon shrugs, feigning nonchalance. “Just a good day, I guess.”

“Uh-huh,” Mingyu drawls, his eyes flicking to you and back to Jihoon. “And does this ‘good day’ have anything to do with the fact that you can’t stop staring at her?”

Jihoon’s ears turn red, but he tries to play it cool, casually leaning back in his chair. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Oh, come on,” Mingyu says, grinning. “You’re practically glowing. It’s disgusting, really.”

Another bandmate, Soonyoung, perks up at the exchange, his gaze darting between you and Jihoon. “Wait a second,” he says, eyes narrowing. “Are you guys…?”

You try to hide your smile behind your coffee cup, but Jihoon’s bandmates are relentless. The teasing intensifies, with exaggerated gasps, dramatic gestures, and a chorus of “finally!” echoing through the room. Jihoon rubs the back of his neck, clearly torn between embarrassment and pride.

“Alright, alright,” he says, holding up his hands in mock surrender. He turns to you, his eyes softening as he reaches for your hand. “You’re not mad if I say it, right?”

“Not at all,” you reply, your heart fluttering.

Jihoon takes a deep breath before turning back to his bandmates, his expression firm but laced with a hint of nervousness. “Yes, okay? She’s my girlfriend. Happy now?”

The room erupts into cheers and applause, the bandmates high-fiving each other like they’ve won a prize. “Took you long enough!” one of them shouts, while another adds, “I was starting to think this day would never come!”

Amid the chaos, Jihoon looks at you, his face a mixture of exasperation and adoration. “They’re impossible,” he mutters, shaking his head. But then his expression softens, and he tugs you closer, his hands sliding around your waist.

“I love you,” he says, loud enough for everyone to hear this time. His gaze locks onto yours, earnest and unshakable. “I’m not hiding it anymore. I love you.”

The teasing fades into the background as Jihoon leans in, his lips brushing yours in a kiss that’s soft but filled with meaning. His hands stay steady on your waist, grounding you as the moment stretches on. When you pull back, breathless and a little dazed, his bandmates are cheering again, but you barely notice.

All you can focus on is Jihoon and the way he’s looking at you like you’re the only thing that matters in the world.

Jihoon leans his forehead against yours, his hands still cradling your waist as the noise of his bandmates fades into the background. He smiles soft, unguarded, and completely full of love. “You know,” he murmurs, his voice low and steady, “I used to think my music was the best way to tell a story, but then you came along and proved me wrong. You’re my favorite song, and I want to play you for the rest of my life.”

You can’t help but laugh softly, your chest tightening at the sincerity in his words. “That’s cheesy, Jihoon.”

“Yeah,” he admits, his grin widening, “but it’s true. And if you think that’s bad, wait until I start writing songs about you.”

The thought makes your heart swell, and you can’t resist kissing him again, ignoring the teasing whistles from the rest of the room. As far as you’re concerned, the rest of the world can wait. Right now, this moment is just for the two of you.

They only scratch at their cheek, eyes wandering away from Wise’s gaze before presenting a film in hand. “Uh, yeah. Could I rent out this tape?” He only looked down at the tape in question, the genre surprising him to say the least. “Oh sure. Just Oh~ Sweetie today?” The nervously nod, a faint blush painting their cheeks like dapped out watercolors. He rang it up, smiling to himself before handing over the tape. 

“Alright, you’re all set. The return policy is usually a week from today, but feel free to drop by anytime before then. There’s a fee for late returns, but feel free to call the store if you have any questions. Thank you for your business.” Their eyes gleamed in excitement as they held the case in hand, Wise could almost see the sparkles emitting off of them before they waved him bye with a sheepish smile blessing his vision. Once out the store, he could only stare before smiling to himself again.

⋈ Since then, he is always greeting them while also discussing new films that would be to their liking. Mainly ranging from rom-coms to fantasy-adventure, he has gotten to knowing them to the point where they’ve become close friends. Wise enjoys their conversations as they always mention their favorite part of the tapes; he recommends them with childlike innocence, glowing brightly with a cheerful disposition. They invite him out sometimes when he’s clocked out for break, treating him to noodles or listening to some new records across the street. Another place they are a regular at, learning more about their interesting taste in music that fits their aesthetic.

He’s asked about your lifestyle once, giving him a nervous response while twiddling with your fingers. “Ah, well, I get that question a lot. I always had a fascination with gothic fashion and the aesthetic as a whole, so I wanted to express my love for the art form by wearing what I found comfortable. People are surprised when I mention that, but many people I’ve met say that it’s really cool, so I continue to express myself freely- sorry, I’m probably rambling now.” Your yapping slowing into a nonsensible muttering which Wise assures them that he doesn’t mind it one bit.

“Well, I think you're pretty- neat! It’s pretty neat, so I can’t argue with you on that.” He nodded along, seeing how they only skipped beside him with renewed confidence. “Thank you, Wise!”

⋈ Whenever he’s out and about, should he spot them in their usual circle or looming over a display alone, despite the aura they have hovering over them he still makes it a habit to call out to them. The moment before and after they spot him makes his heart flutter, how they look over with a subtle glare before perking up and grinning cheekily and waving him over. Really, it’s a sight to behold.

⋈ Maybe one day they’ll be more than friends, but neither of them would admit it. No number of soft touches and gentle smiles will push them to confess their little attraction to one another. So for now they’ll cuddle up on his bed while watching another film. As friends, yeah really close friends.

Well, if they confirm that Lou isn't in any more episodes, then yes obviously bucktommy is over in canon--but fanfic and fanart still exists so we can go right on enjoying them however we want.

As far as series canon goes if buddie is on the horizon so be it, but if Lou is still appearing in more episodes then this is just the "breakup" part of their story, rom-com style, before things work out in the end.

Either way I plan to keep going w/bucktommy fics, and if the fandom ever chills the fuck out about ship "membership" enough, I might feel safe to write another bvddie fic. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it right now though because (in my experience) there's so much hostility toward multi-shipping among bvddies, I feel like anything I wrote would just get flamed to hell and back because I dared to root for something else--and will continue to enjoy bucktommy even if they are over in canon.

We'll see what happens. I am eager to get confirmation of whether or not Lou is off the show, but either way I've had so much fun. And I plan to keep having fun. I'd love for us all to keep hanging out, sharing art, fics, etc. Because we can.

❓ #QOTD What classic story would you love to read a queer retelling of? ❓ 🦇 Gwendoline and Arthur have been betrothed to one another since birth. Too bad they absolutely hate each other. When forced to spend a summer in Camelot together, Gwen and Arthur discover tantalizing secrets about one another: Gwen witnesses Arthur kissing a boy, while Arthur learns that Gwen has a crush on the kingdom's lone lady knight, Lady Bridget Leclair. Stuck at a stalemate, they make a reluctant pact to cover for one another. While Gwen and Bridget finally connect, Arthur finds himself enamored by Gwen's brother. Can they navigate their messy feelings to find their own places in history?

💜 Oh my goddess, the queer chaos in this is everything. Lex Croucher has spun Arthurian legends of old into a queer medieval YA rom-com that could easily alter history as we know it. Gwen is a bi baby, newly navigating her feelings for a badass lady knight, while Arthur is a gay, sassy messy shooting heart-eyes at Gwen's brother (the one-day king). The dialogue is EVERYTHING; sassy, quick-witted, and all too entertaining. There's somewhat sexy sword-fighting (come on, sword-fighting is always sexy, but when your queer crush is schooling you, it's all the better), fake dating (does it count as fake dating when you've been betrothed since childhood?), and heart-warming found family vibes. The queer panic and nervous humor were all too relatable, even though the story is set in medieval times. That's a true feat; you can connect with the queer chaos, even if you're shooting heart-eyes in the 21st century.

💜 That being said, let's talk about Gwen and her lady knight. I mean, get ready to absolutely SWOON alongside Gwen. Lady Bridget Lechlair is all fierce confidence (a necessity, when everyone has an unpopular opinion of you simply because you're a woman, regardless of your badass abilities), but she's also an enigma with a gooey interior. I loved seeing Gwen find her confidence through Bridget, discovering her voice and standing up for them both when necessary. Though Gwen is a royal, she's questioned her inner power and authority, as everyone around her has made it clear her only worth is in her marriage to Arthur as a political move. Spending time with Bridget gives Gwen the change to realize she's worth so much more. Though the story's quick wit and banter stands out, I think this character development is the story's real strength. Sometimes, you need someone who believes in your potential before you can see it yourself.

🦇 The only real hang-up for me was the pacing. The ending felt especially rushed, which was a disappointment after the queer chaos dragged a bit. I wonder if the writer paused for a moment, then returned to finish the latter half of the story. I also found the relationship between Arthur and Gabriel (Gwen's brother) a little underwhelming when it had so much potential at the start. Regardless, I appreciated all the queer hijinks and humor.

🦇 Recommended for fans of Heartstopper, Rainbow Rowell's Simon Snow trilogy, Red, White, & Royal Blue, and the TV show Merlin. Get ready for a swoon-worthy, medieval mess of pining and romance!

For 10: anything by ScarlettStorm, her writing has a really solid voice! Also paired wings soaring by typefortydeductions (E, 33k, WangXian, Modern, slice of life, domestic bliss, angst, fluff, smut, hurt/Comfort, kissing, bdsm, artist WWX, poetry translator LWJ, slight somnophilia) has a very unique and wonderful narrative style.

I would recommend ScarlettStorm, who has great found families and depth of character and a particular breezy style I like. Also Ariaste, who has a similar style and excels at getting the most out of a premise. Also Sami, in particular the Paper Moon series because of her thoughtfulness about character development and how that drives the plot and the neat way she weaves the story together and has excellent narrative consistency. One more - hansbekhart is a tremendously skilled writer who, like orange_crushed (recced above), can just hit you with a brick of emotions. Highly recommend both authors as those who can drag deep, vast emotions out of you and leave you feeling as if you're a different person after you've read their fic. In particular, I suggest Roots Grow Riotous by hansbekhart.

for an example of fantastic writing, Twelve Moons and a Fortnight series by stiltonbasket on ao3 is EXCELLENT (intricate layered worldbuilding in vast timeline, awesome imagery and characterizations and build towards pivotal scenes). 31 Days of Spooky Movies 2023: Week 1

Every October I make it my mission to watch at least 1 spooky movie every day (without rewatching anything watched in a previous October).

In case anyone is looking for some ideas on what to watch this month, here's what I've watched so far, in the order I watched them.

Dumplings (2004)

A Hong Kong horror movie about a former actress who will go to any lengths to keep her looks so as to retain her position of wealth and power.

There's a lot of interesting themes in this one. Using consumption as a metaphor for how systems of power use and abuse those under them is a common theme in Chinese literature and it's deployed quite artfully here.

2. Skinamarink (2022)

An experimental art movie about two kids who wake up in the middle of the night to find all the doors and windows of the house have disappeared and that they're all alone.

You are either going to love this one or hate it. But if you give it a try I recommend committing to it. You've gotta go lights off, by yourself, phone off for this one to work. It's definitely an experimental arty movie so...umm, strap in for a weird experience. But at its heart it's trying to recreate in you that experience of being a little child and afraid of the dark and not quite sure if you're awake or still dreaming.

3. The Thing from Another World (1951)

Before there was John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) there was The Thing from Another World. Both adaptations of the 1938 novella Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell. Here a group of scientists and Air Force officials discover a crashed alien ship in the arctic ice. But things take a turn for the worse when they bring back the body of an extraterrestrial to study only to find it isn't actually dead.

This movie somehow manages to keep all the most boring bits from the novella while also throwing out all the parts of the story that are actually interesting. Gone is the shape shifting alien. Here we have a lurching plant based alien (aka a big dude in a weird costume) that looks more Frankenstein than Thing.

4. Dave of the Dead (2020)

A cheaply animated movie about a zombie who works in an outer space fast food restaurant who has to try and get the money back from Dracula after the count dines and dashes on him.

The animation on this movie is SO cheap. They honestly don't even try to animate facial expressions nor match dialogue to mouth flap. Not to mention there's only the semblance of a story here. But the worse thing about it is that it is aimed at kids and there's a weirdly strong anti-labor stance to the whole thing.

5. The She Beast (1966)

When her car plunges into a lake a woman becomes possessed by the spirit of the witch that had been drowned there in the 18th century and wants her revenge.

The movie is said to star Barbara Steele and while she is the best thing about the movie, she is barely in it. When they say "possessed" they mean replaced by someone else wearing a bizarre monster mask. So instead we are forced to follow her lame fiancee around. Also there's a really random attempted rape scene in the movie for some reason.

6. Bell, Book and Candle (1958)

A modern witch casts a lovespell on her neighbor in order to get back at his fiancee. But things get complicated when she starts to fall in love with him for real.

I'm sorry, but I have a huge bias against Jimmy Stewart. And here he is at age 50 starring against a 25 year old Kim Novak. That man is not a catch! I do not understand the hold he had over Hollywood. Anyways, as far as rom-coms go this a bit of a strange one. The cast is pretty fun (when you exclude Stewart) and it's got some interesting flair. But it's held back by the non-existent chemistry between the leads and the slight tinge of 50s misogyny.

P.S. Don't think I didn't notice their disdain for the oxford comma, the heathens.

7. Doll Shark (2022)

A kid's stuffed shark becomes possessed by the spirit of a killer shark and goes on a murder spree.

This is from one of those studios that specializes in making incredibly low budget junk films and it shows. It's umm...not good. If you insist on watching it be sure to have some drinks and/or some friends with you.

8. An American Werewolf in London (1981)

Two Americans are backpacking through England (as was the style at the time) when they are attacked by a werewolf. Now cursed and far from home, time is quickly running out for them.

The classic John Landis horror comedy! I used to catch this one on TV all the time as a kid. It's a lot of fun and an interesting piece of Jewish-American horror. I will admit that while I like every scene in the movie, as a whole it feels slightly disjointed to me? In any case there's a lot of memorable scenes, practical effects, and great performances. Jenny Agutter is especially charming.

9. Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde (1971)

Dr Jekyll is trying to discover a secret to prolonging life and thinks the answer might be found in female hormones. But when his experience goes wrong he transforms into a woman. In order to keep their experiment going and perfect their elixir they need dead bodies, but what are you to do when supplies are running low?

I honestly do not know if this movie was trying to be this queer or if it was just a happy accident. I swear to god, Jekyll essentially invents HRT on accident, has a gender crisis, and then has to battle with wither they continue their life as they had or to embrace this new identity. It is fascinating. I don't think it was intentionally creating this theme, but by good golly, they make it really hard not to see it that way. Martine Beswick as Hyde is so, so good in this.

10. Puppet Shark (2023)

A puppet movie about two kids telling shark stories around a campfire.

Another of these super-low budget films. It has some charming moments early on. But quickly run out of ideas and it becomes a real slog to the finish.

11. Son of Dracula (1943)

A vampire who may or may not be Count Dracula is invited to Louisiana by an heiress. But he has his own fiendish plans for this new world.

Lon Chaney Jr. is, without a doubt, the worst Dracula I have ever seen. He is the we-have-Dracula-at-home Dracula. He feels like Dracula's loser brother-in-law or something. I don't even know. It has it's moments, but it's a bit all over the place.

12. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920)

While trying to save his soul from sin, nice guy Dr. Jekyll creates the alternate persona of Mr. Hyde. But things get tough for Jekyll when Hyde's transgressions start to get out of hand.

In terms of filmmaking this is pretty impressive. But in terms of story they made a really weird change from the book. Originally Jekyll was ashamed of his vices and created Hyde as an alter-ego to hide behind and protect his image. But here Jekyll wants to be sure he doesn't slip into temptation by unleashing an unchecked evil force onto the streets? I thought he was supposed to be smart.

13. The Bewitched Inn (1897)

A man goes to an inn for a good night's sleep only to find the place is haunted.

Back from the days where movies were only a couple minutes long. They figured out how to hide action in the cuts and by gosh...they went for it. It's fun to see such early movies to see just how far we've come. Truly we stand on the backs of giants.

14. The X-Ray Fiend (1897)

When a couple is exposed to x-rays we can see their skeletons.

Another short one from the early years. Not only harnessing the power of the cut, but also tapping into the strange new power of the discovery of x-rays two years earlier.

15. Titane (2021)

A dancer who has a fetish for cars must pretend to be the lost son of a firefighter in order to hide from authorities.

A French body horror and psychological drama. Taps into the genre of body horror to investigate ideas of gender, pregnancy, and identity. I honestly can't describe it in a way to properly due it justice. It's an experience. If your stomach can handle the body horror you should definitely check it out.

16. The Girl from the Other Side (2022)

In a world where cursed creatures stalk the outside world as people hide in the cities. One creature comes across a young girl and together they create a haven for themselves.

A beautiful piece of Japanese animation and one of my favorite movies I've seen this year. Dark fantasy meets found family. The animation is absolutely gorgeous. It's like a fairy tale come to life.

17. Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965)

A group of strangers meet on a train. But when a fortuneteller begins to tell their futures to pass the time they start to realize that their futures are bleak.

To its credit it has some powerhouse actors in its roster. Peter Cushing, Donald Sutherland, friggin' Christopher Lee! But it is an anthology of stories and the stories are rather lackluster. They all just kinda...end. With much more thought being put into the setup than the ending.

18. Werewolf by Night (2022)

A group of monster hunters are assembled for a contest to see who will gain control of a powerful artifact.

I was not aware that this was a Marvel movie until it started. Wish I had known that before. I was in the mood for a modern take on old Universal horror, and it some ways it is, but in most ways it's just another sort of Marvel movie. I swear Gael García Bernal is in a Spanish language movie it will be fire. But if he's in an American movie it will probably be simple pop. fodder. Would've like more atmosphere and monsters than action set pieces.

19. I Blame Society (2020)

An out-of-work filmmaker decides to prove to those around her that she is capable of something bigger by finishing a project to make a movie about how she would commit the perfect murder.

I get why this movie won't be for everyone, but I loved it. It had me laughing out loud throughout. And some of the shots from this are burned into my brain forever. It's almost like a dark-comedy mockumentary of sorts. And its satire seeks out those in every level of the filmmaking process.

20. Bluebeard (1944)

A man tries to ditch his proclivity for murder by turning his artistic energies into puppets. But those around him continue to force his hand.

It's not terrible or anything. But the Bluebeard character just annoyed me to no end. I would have preferred if we were mostly following the leading lady, but we're stuck following him and he is not a particularly compelling fellow.

21. Escape Room (2017)

A group of rich friends take part in an exclusive escape room for a birthday celebration only to discover that the stakes are higher than they were expecting.

I was not aware until I had started this that there are actually multiple movies with this title and this is, in fact, not the one I had heard about. Umm...this seems like it would be a fun one to watch with drinks and friends and laugh at. But it is not a good movie by any stretch. You are left with so many questions as to why they did the things they did in this thing.
