Venti truly is the epitome of "he WOULD fucking say that, as part of his facade, but you seem to think he would mean it genuinely" the fact that interpreation of him ranges from "drunkard, weak god, doesn't care for his people" to "he lied about being the weakest, his drunkeness is a facade, he's the best archon in regards to the management of his people" and everything in between. It's amazing, what a guy of all time.

He's fascinating, because he's such a black box that there are a variety of ways to get him really wrong but there are also a variety of ways to interpret him that are reasonable. How strong is he really? How emotional? Can he form truly equal relationships with mortals (edit: at least post-becoming-a-god) or will they always feel like children to some extent to him? Are his time abilities very limited, or does he fuck around with timelines like the player navigates hangout events, or something in between? Why does he sleep? What did he do in Khaenri'ah? What the hell are his long-term goals, if any?

There's a chunk of fan interpretations where I'm like 'bro you are being played, reread the source material'. The main example is people taking the Signora cutscene at face value; it gets more obvious Venti sandbagged the more you think about it lmfao. Fanworks that hyperwoobify him or lean really really hard into him being a god and treat any humility from him as a facade also feel wrong to me.

But then there's a lot in between that I might not vibe with but are completely reasonable interpretations. And we're probably all wrong considering we're missing major parts of his backstory and have no idea what the pov of a wind-spirit-with-time-powers-turned-deity would be like.

ah wait I just remembered the question I was curious of your thoughts about last night but. if the nameless bard got a vision, what would it be. Anemo feels like the 'obvious' answer bc he's kinda Venti also he fought for freedom, but he may not necessarily fit the more 'hanging onto something to hang on to the past' take on anemo (of course we also know very little about him), so I'm curious if you have Thoughts on whether a different vision may fit him better

Ooo, good question! Based on what I thought defined the elements in that convo I'm thinking NB would fit... hydro and potentially anemo depending on backstory?

My tentative thoughts on anemo rn involve two themes:

Some sort of loss and striving for a better future, and

Selflessness/issues with identity or prioritising themself; they're consumed by their cause and live to further it, in some cases to the point of self-destruction, in the same way anemo exists to amplify other elements. Even if they occupy an important position they aren't in it to be the main character.

So agreed- I feel like I'd need to know NB's past to confidently assign anemo to him- though he could fit the rest really well. Especially if he was genuinely nameless.

Hydro could also fit him because hydro characters seem to be defined by... a strong sense of right and wrong and performing some sort of 'role'? The unjustness of Decarabian's treatment of Mondstadt could have been a big motivator for him, and as a bard-turned-rebellion-instigator he would be no stranger to putting on a performance.

Crack theory: the overthrow of Decarabian and old Mondstadt has been affected by Irminsul erasure and that's why half its important participants lack names (also something about inconsistency in whether a knight was involved or not??) + the Hexenzirkel is linked to Mondstadt/has interacted with Barbatos + Venti sings of the past in metaphors and song

This is a tangent but now I want to see the archons in a dnd campaign. Traveller as DM because they're the only one who's done tabletop roleplaying before. It would be a beautiful trainwreck.

How I feel about him: joke answer: this. Longer answer: god, what a character. The fandom freaks out about any hint of an upcoming Dain quest for a reason, and he's one of very few characters that a) Knows Things and b) will actually talk to us about them. The poor guy's been through hell, witnessed his people fall to fates worse than death and spent 500 years alone and burdened with his own erosion and yet he's still extremely mentally strong and tries to do the right thing. He puts even Furina to shame and she's also one of my favourite characters.

Romantic ships: not really anyone, but you know what? Dainsleif/abyss sibling (Lumine in my case). It basically writes itself.

Non-romantic OTPs: Dainsleif + literally anyone. Dude, please stop isolating yourself and start cherishing what time you have left more. It's been 500 years. You've thoroughly earned it.

I'd especially like to see him interact with Kaeya more and move past their edgy political posturing; they both need that, I think. I'd love to see him be forced into a get-along sweater with Venti and Zhongli just to see what happens too, though the resulting interactions would greatly depend on how and why they were complicit in Khaenri'ah's fall.

Unpopular opinion: don't really have any! No clue what the fanon is of him, tbh. I love him but I don't actively seek out content.

Something I wish would happen: probably the archon-get-along-sweater thing. It would open up so much lore and so many emotions for everyone involved.

Venti's always a human bard. He just gives each character an increasingly wild rollercoaster of a backstory that gets updated on the spot to 'yes, and' people multiple times over the campaign. A lot of them feature tragedy and/or a fall from power for some reason.

Zhongli would be totally unpredictable, choosing whatever has useful stats for whatever ridiculous way he wants to exploit the rules this time.

I'm not sure what this would mean in terms of dnd races but Ei's character is always pretty much her. This roleplaying thing confuses her. Wasn't this about navigating a fictional adventure? Why are there so many steps before one even begins?

Assuming the only reason humans don't become gods is Celestia suppresses them, I'm leaning 'maybe Celestia was suppressing most of them too to keep up the facade, but made an exception for Focalors out of necessity/because she was close to Egeria/because she remembered Fontainians' origins'??

Perhaps a factor in Celestia being so pissed at Egeria turning oceanids into humans was it fucked with the boundaries of the hierarchy they're upholding. It could imply humans aren't that fundamentally different from Teyvat's other races.

Directors commentary, this segment!

Ty!! Sorry for taking a bit to respond, my brain hasn't been cooperating. This spiraled into commentary on the overall scene, haha.

(the ask game) (the fic)

I went back and forth a lot on what to show and not show and what POVs to have them from, in this chapter, ultimately deciding to make things concise and highly focused on the dynamic between NB and Venti instead of going on tangents into anything else. That scene is the most reflective of that.

I'd considered writing NB's first actual day post-capture, from his POV, and also having a Venti POV scene or two showing him going to the village and actually experiencing NB's life himself. But the former would have thrown off the alternating POV pattern I wanted for the rest of the chapter, and I felt like the latter would be more fitting for a much longer fic where setting up other Old Mond characters early would be much more important. Keeping things to NB and Venti's interactions also keeps us more in NB's shoes; he's stuck in the cave and so are we.

I needed to establish NB's life was kind of lonely and aimless anyway- I also headcanon him as being a bit of a loner orphan until something lights a fire under his ass in canon- so I ended up making scene 2 a Venti POV days after NB's capture to give him time to learn things, and started the scene with this:

and then had the exchange that leads into your screenshot later in the scene to hammer it in more.

So! The actual screenshotted part!

Each block in the fic advanced the dynamic between NB and Venti in a specific way. This one has the power imbalance between them sink in for NB, but also establishes Venti's treatment of him stemmed from genuinely inhuman apathy instead of sadism. And even if NB's sinking into despair, he's still pragmatic and worked out how to get something out of Venti by approaching it on Venti's terms.

This scene being Venti POV is also very intentional. His reasoning for allowing NB to have the lyre had to be shown because it would easily be misinterpreted as an empathetic gesture otherwise. NB's internal state, on the other hand, is easily inferrable between his circumstances, the things we learn about his backstory, and his body language, and having the reader piece those external cues together is more engaging than just spelling it out.

Finally, 'it wouldn't harm either of them' from Venti is meant to be ironic on a reread. You fool. You imbecile.

12. What's the funniest or craziest AU idea you've ever come up with?

I'm not the sort of person who has a bajillion developed AUs, but I've had this really weird concept rotating in my brain recently where... you know how in the webtoon Venti was diffused into the ground while asleep? What if some dire circumstances and distance from Mondstadt forced him to do that with a person? And his powers leaked a bit, making them almost an anemo archon lite for a while?

Originally I was thinking of Jean being the other person but I realised Kaeya would be way more interesting. Temporary anemo archon substitute Kaeya carrying around the dormant soul of a god he still has very mixed feelings about, lmao.

13. What's a character or ship you haven't written/drawn yet but would like to some day?

God, so many, and the main thing holding me back is drawing human faces is suffering (and in the case of anything romantic, lack of irl experience). I'm honestly tempted to do a challenge where I draw every genshin character until I git gud.

Maybe I'll have something to contribute to zhongven nation eventually. It needs more content so I feel like it's my duty.

I don't think so! In terms of preferences after the favourites, maybe I wouldn't be so terminally Mondstadt brained if Diluc hadn't carried me through so much?

Shipwise diluven was my second favourite but kaeven might be overtaking it- despite having like no content- because of the sheer potential it has to be interesting. I always end up obsessed with ships that feel like they should be a trainwreck but have some way the characters could be dragged, kicking and screaming, into realising they have a ton more in common than they thought.

Furiven's growing on me a lot as well; it has a lot of potential in terms of interesting parallels between the two.

I'll take some creative liberties with 'segment' because I've really really been wanting to talk about the running metaphor I used in in the chapter. Specifically associating water with emotions and humanity in the same way wind is associated with fae in the fic. I had a ton of fun with this and recommend people comb through the fic for it before reading this; see how much you can pick out yourself :p

It started coincidentally with the first half of this scene:

Where I just thought comparing human emotions to being caught in a turbulent ocean would be pretty. I decided to take that imagery further with the comparison of the bard's singing to flowing water, then decided this collectively slapped and I should extend it to the whole fic.

I like using tarot as a secular introspection tool sometimes, and in tarot water is associated with emotions while air is associated with intellect and the swords suit (associated with air) often has harsher undertones than other cards. That wasn't planned but it's a fun coincidence and might have influenced me subconsciously.

Anyway, in the rest of the fic I went ham with water vocabulary. I especially leaned into it to indirectly spell out how Venti was emotionally evolving, because each scene from scene 2 onwards advances that in some way, but I used it for other things as well. In the span of under 2k words we've got

Another lyrics flowing metaphor;

NB's body being invaded by wind and stripped of water as his name was stolen;

Rain starting and a few drops hitting Venti the first time NB played music, coincidentally followed by him making the irrational decision to listen to NB more;

That whole scene at the start of this post, which is where it's the heaviest, and finally

The final scene starting with a raging storm and Venti entering heavily soaked by rain to symbolise how much things have advanced and how two sides of him are in heavy conflict with each other.
