Loggerhead Marinelife Center - Fall Internship Opportunity (FL)
Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) is a non-profit organization that promotes the conservation of ocean ecosystems with a special focus on threatened and endangered sea turtles. The center features free admission and hosts 240,000 visitors each year that come from down the street, across the country and around the world. The visitor experience includes up-close interactions with threatened and endangered sea turtles, plus a variety of aquariums, exhibits and learning programs. Located adjacent to one of the most important sea turtle nesting beaches in the world, LMC is a state-of-the-art sea turtle hospital and research facility.
The Conservation Department is currently accepting college level interns to assist with the center’s upcoming Voluntary Speed Reduction Zone (VSRZ) for commercial and recreational boaters in the area. Students interested in this program will be working under the Conservation Department and assisting in various tasks, including, but not limited to: • Collecting and recording boat speed and activity data at three locations between the Jupiter Inlet and the Lake Worth Inlet during morning, midday, and evening sampling times • Surveying boaters at local marinas regarding their knowledge of sea turtles in the area and the animals’ interactions with boaters • Entering data into a database • Distributing educational materials to local marinas, boat clubs, dive shops, and partner organizations • Assisting with workshops and boater education • Assisting with the VSRZ media campaign • Other duties as assigned
Requirements • Comfortable speaking with the general public on information related to LMC’s VSRZ • Detail oriented and organized • Self-motivated and willing to learn • Desire to implement conservation solutions for endangered species • Willing to work outdoors in Florida’s heat, rain, and wind when necessary • All interns must be currently enrolled university students (full or part time) pursuing a degree in a related discipline (i.e. marine science, biology, environmental science, education). All interns must also possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a criminal background check.
