Some Thoughts About... Vampire Survivors: Ode To Castlevania

Sticking Castlevania in another game is a pretty good way to get me interested. It worked on Dead Cells and it’s going to work for Vampire Survivors. But VS was already a fun game so that’s a plus. And the DLC is less than 4 bucks, so that’s a pretty good deal.

First, a word of warning: This thing is super buggy to straight up broken in some regards. I was playing on the Switch, so I’m not sure if it’s better on other platforms. A selection of issues I ran into, from funny to losing an hour of progress:

For a game that crashes this damn much, the least they could do is save your unlocks when you get them in a run so you don’t lose everything when the game crashes

You can’t collect one of the relics. You pick it up and the game awards it to you at the end of your run, but the Unlock doesn’t trigger

Missing text strings

Chests can give you an item you already have. Not in the normal upgrade way. If you have a spell book maxed at level 8, you can open a chest and get another level 8 spell book, which doesn’t appear to do anything. Your spell doesn’t jump up to level 9, it’s just a wasted chest

A lot of the new items display over your character instead of behind them, so good luck actually seeing yourself, enemies, items, and even walls at the end of a run

You don’t get credit for evolving weapons until you unlock the ability to unlock the character that requires that weapon. You have the evolved weapon in your Collection but the game just refuses to believe it, so you have to do it a second time

You can’t seal a weapon if you unlocked it on your previous run. You have to unlock it, start a new run, and finish that second run to seal the weapon from the first

One of the new items lets you just walk through walls and it does not seem like that was intended behavior because it breaks the whole progression on the map. You can actually just force your way through a lot of walls as the end of a run gets more hectic. I kept thinking I’d found another secret passageway only to check the map and see that I was passed the normal boundaries again

I re-triggered the final boss fight and softlocked the game because the item I was supposed to collect didn’t spawn (probably because I already owned it) and there was no way to leave the room or pause the game to quit. Which caused me to lose multiple items and characters I unlocked on that run

There are a few sidescroller boss fights and multiple weapons stop working in these fights

I think most of the secrets, and thus the final character unlocks, are broken. I have the secret available to complete and I’ve done the requirements, but they don’t complete. I have a special item that’s supposed to make a second merchant appear, and he never shows up. I’ve checked the requirements with some sites and Youtube videos and I’ve done what they show and been to the spots on the map they show the enemies spawning and they just don’t show up for me

So if you’re interested in getting this, seriously wait for some patches or don’t buy the Switch version because you’re locked out of a significant chunk of the characters.

So, assuming the game is actually working, my thoughts:

I didn’t like any of the free expansions they put out for base Vampire Survivors so I never bought the paid ones and was surprised at how much more interesting it is than the free expansions. This is what I though Adventure Mode was going to be. A big “dungeon” to explore, actual level design, bosses to fight, just all with the mechanics of VSIt’s a great idea in theory, but...

The map is so big that you don’t beat it in one go. The pluses are there are lots of bosses to fight and rooms to explore. The minus is that means the enemy spawns are all based on time rather than progress through the stage. If you can warp to a far part of the castle early in the game, they can’t put strong enemies there, so it’s the same spawn pattern every time you play, just with some minor additions depending on which section of the castle you’re in (like flying enemies appearing on the ramparts, etc). That really makes it feel like once you’ve done one run, even if you only made it a few bosses in, you’ve seen A LOT of what the map has to offer. Your next run is going to be the same, just with a few new bosses and new room art.

Most Bosses don’t do anything, they just walk at you. There are no neat gimmicks based on their attacks in their own games. The bosses are no different from the normal enemies, just with a lot more health. The final boss is actually neat though. Mechanically, it’s dead simple, but they apply enough bonkers moments to it (like the Director fight in the base game) that it’s wild.

The Castlevania music was a huge draw for me on this one. The remixes are okay, a lot of generic “CV music but with rock” like you can find all over Youtube, but at a better quality. Thankfully, they have a lot of classic CV music and that’s what I usually have going. But you can’t make a playlist. I mean, I’M broken enough to listen to the same CV 1 or 2 song on a loop for 15 minutes, but I’d still like it to run through a playlist rather than repeating the same song over and over until your run ends. Some of these tracks are only like 2 minutes long, so they’re going to repeat a lot over the course of a run with no way to move to the next track.

There are a ton of characters to unlock from the whole franchise. I got my Sonia and Shanoa, plus SotN Maria! A lot of the weapons aren’t that great. That’s kind of the problem with VS being a blatant rip-off of CV to start with, they already did all the classics. But the heroes can use the weapons from the base game, so you’re not stuck with bad ones. The character unlocks chain pretty well, so they force you to play as lots of characters and vary things up.

Some really great bosses show up and the map is filled with fan service and jokes. Also, some not so great bosses show up, but it’s still funny to see them. Except Gergoth! Why are they still putting Gergoth in games?! It’s just so... Ugh, gross. Freaky ass Gergoth...

There are some weird choices in unlocks with the requirements being super unintuitive and not things you might naturally discover. You really have to go out of your way and build a run entirely devoted to getting some characters. And only one character can actually finish the “story” and fight the final boss.

There’s a lot of bloat in characters and unlocks. Most of them don’t have any important differences so unlocking stuff kind of drags because you have to use a lot of them to unlock the next person in the chain. It’s neat to see so many things to unlock, but there’s little satisfaction in unlocking a second character that uses the same weapons as the previous one. They could have just made a lot of them alternate skins for characters. They put a lot of effort into making the less interesting option of having everybody be unique. Almost none of the characters are ones I’d use again when playing the game for fun, so you use them once to unlock the next character and never touch them again. If they were skins, it would be fun to run around as that character but retaining the abilities of an actually good character.

A lot of the cast is so weak that they’re no fun at all to use. I was finishing some runs at level 40 because it was just so hard to kill even minor enemies and had a boss on screen for 15 minutes without being able to kill it. Then you switch over to another character and they’re killing bosses in a minute or two and ending runs at over level 100. The balancing is all over the place and it’s not good. Magic users have to stand still to charge spells, but the enemies on the Castlevania stage have such high health and do so much damage that you have to move around, so those characters feel awful to use. But if you take that same character to one of the stages in the default game where the enemies are normal strength and you can stand around from time to time, the characters do fine. It’s so weird to make the new characters for the DLC so terrible at their own stage and content.

If you don’t like Vampire Survivors already, this isn’t going to change your mind.

If you don’t like Castlevania, this is probably too grindy and buggy to be really fun.

If you do like both already, the fan service, music, and just seeing the characters in these wacky situations is well worth the meager asking price. As long as you wait for patches so the game actually functions!
