Yoga Poses: How to do Forearm Balance with 3 variations
Watch Alisha break down forearm balance with 3 different variations: Traditional, Hollowback, and Scorpion!
Check out our other advanced poses here: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAA5jlep7z9-H80SCckrEDU_Fxi9Vk6T5
Forearm Balance is an advanced Yoga pose, categorized as an arm balance. This is a pose that should only be attempted by experienced Yoga practitioners who have built up the strength, body awareness and understanding of alignment principles necessary to safely practice this posture. This is a pose that should be done towards the end of a Yoga practice and would be categorized as a peak pose. To properly warm up for this pose, please include the types of poses below to ensure that the body is ready to attempt forearm balance (pincha mayurasana) or scorpion (vrschikasana).
Yoga poses to prepare the body: Sphinx Dolphin Forearm plank Plank Chaturanga Cobra Locust (shoulder openers) Upward facing dog Downward facing dog Standing Split Warrior I Humble Warrior
This video should be practiced after warming the body with a vinyasa flow practice focusing on shoulder and core strengthening, shoulder opening and back-bending. Please make sure you practice for at least 30 minutes before practicing along with this video. If you are simply wanting to learn more about this pose, how to break it down and understand different modifications, then it would be appropriate to watch this video without warming up beforehand. Safety is our highest priority.
Advanced arm balances help challenge the experienced Yoga practitioner to further explore their practice and the limits of their bodies and minds. Working up to a pose like pincha mayurasana takes time and requires a great deal of commitment but what a great feeling it is to finally stick the pose in the center of the room, while maintaining a slow, deep breath ratio and a calm, clear focused mind. And remember to not get attached to the results!! Do not compare your personal self-worth with your ability to do a Yoga pose (asmita). We practice and then let go. Have fun and enjoy the ride!!

11 Yoga Poses to Prepare for Scorpion Pose
Fun fact: there are over 1,750 species of scorpions known to exist. While there are also many variations of the yoga pose Scorpion or Vrschikasana, the two main variations start with arms straight in handstand or with bent arms in forearm stand. This is an advanced asana, so it is best to consult a yoga teacher prior to attempting this at home and to check-in and modify if there is a history of spinal, back, or wrist injuries, or if pregnant or if any heart conditions exist (i.e. high blood pressure). Scorpion Pose is an advanced, challenging, and fun arm balance. The pose strengthens the torso, back, arms, and shoulders. It invites a nice stretch for the chest, spine, hip flexors, and shoulders. Scorpion Pose is also a great opportunity to work on balance, concentration, and openness to vulnerability. The yoga pose like the animal is often feared because it looks scary. However, with practice, the pose can be fun and beneficial for any practice!
Strength Focused Preparation
1. Downward-Facing Dog
Strengthens the core, arms, and legs while also stretching the hands, shoulders, spine, hamstrings, calves, and soles of the feet.
2. Dolphin Plank Pose
Modification of Plank Pose that strengthens the core, thighs, and arms.
3. Dolphin Pose
Strengthens the core, arms, and legs as well as opens the shoulders and stretches the hamstrings, calves, and soles of the feet.
4. Feathered Peacock Pose
Improves balance and concentration, strengthens the shoulders, arms, and back as well as stretches the shoulders.
5. Handstand
Strengthens the shoulders, arms, and wrists as well as improves balance.
Flexibility Focused Preparation
6. Hands-Under-Feet or Gorilla Pose
Stretches the back as well as wrists.
7. Cow Pose
Stretches the ankles, hips, thighs, shoulders, armpits, triceps, and chest.
8. Locust Pose
Stretches the shoulders and thighs while gently opening the chest and back.
9. Cobra Pose
Stretches the abdomen, shoulders, thorax, and lungs as well as opens the heart to vulnerability.
10. Camel Pose
Stretches the entire front body including the abdomen, thighs, thorax, ankles, groins, throat, psoas major muscles, and quadriceps femoris muscles. This is also a great time to strengthen the back and open the chest and heart.
11. Wheel Pose
Stretches the abdomen, thorax, and lungs as well as strengthens the back, legs, abdomen, spine, arms, and wrists.
You can also try to practice the pose with a wall and walk the legs down. Additionally, Charging Scorpion Pose can be a fun modification or advancement (depending on the individual) and play pose which invites more heart opening and balance work.
Stay safe and happy practicing, yogis!
