Festival Un-packed: Leadership and Logistics.

Working within a group like Teatr Brama there was already an established leadership role, as well as the defined supporting cast. Since most of my (Sean) research has been geared toward the study of Drama Therapy I will view it mostly from that lense. In a drama therapy session, you’d have a director of sorts and in the case of Brama this responsibility fell on Daniel. Other participants would be defined as Protagonist, Auxiliary Egos, and audience. As the work was devised, different Protagonists were established within the confines of different scenes, antagonists or supporting players were added, and the audience fell to extended company members Patryck and Voyteck. Daniel also played the role of audience always trying to view our work with fresh eyes and only offering direction when the impulse struck. Company member Ola was mostly in charge of musical and choral direction, as she had the most experience. Adam and I were chiefly in charge of being the “mission bearers” given that the goal of this performance, besides being apart of Touchstone’s Festival Unbound, was apart of an InFocus year seminar with Moravian College; the topic being Scarcity and homelessness and the idea of Utopia in our modern world. As the scenes developed, company members were given their own moments to really express the importance of the topic in their individual ways and we became in charge of our own pieces. This structure worked well as Teatr Brama had the challenge of working with new company members and introducing them to their long standing devising practices. 

For the festival as a whole, each individual show had their own directors, stage managers, and production managers as is typical for any theatre performance. Chris Egging, being the new Technical Director did a fantastic job considering that he was new to the position (not experience wise) and that he had a lot of moving pieces to deal with on multiple different productions. Although everyone helped on every aspect of the separate shows, each individual person’s strengths came together to make for a very successful festival. Mary Wright being primarily the community organizer with directing the opening and closing ceremonies. Lisa Jordan taking the administrative lead with Emma Ackerman’s support (although they both donned many other hats) JP Jordan as the Artistic Director carried the torch that connected the ideals and mission of Bethlehem of days past and those yet to come and was a constant source of support for all those involved. Bill George, the same being a beacon for Touchstone and the community at large. With so many moving pieces it was hard to see an individual look at the leadership aspect at times, however, with how successful the productions were you know that the support was there. 

On the topic of Logistics, each production in their individual venues, the members involved with each show, and the time and place they occurred within the festival; the process was fairly standard in a theatrical sense. Each play or event had a director of sorts, a stage manager (even if that person was the same as the director), technical support from either Chris, Emma, JP, etc...and each venue had a point person for any other problems that might have come up. There was a volunteer staff for the entirety of the festival that ran box office, dealt with unforeseen circumstances, and offered general support toward the overall success of the production. Strong leadership when these resources are available, is paramount. Knowing when to take the reigns and knowing when to delegate responsibility is something that is important, and something that worked well during this process.
