I Neogrotteschi derivano sai primi Grotteschi, ma presentano un minore contrasto fra aste verticali e orizzontali e un disegno più regolare. A differenza dei Grotteschi, la “G” non ha il terminale a freccia e le curve in genere finiscono con tratti inclinati.

Developed at the Haas typefoundry in Münchenstein, Switzerland, to compete with the sans-serif typeface Akzidenz Grotesk, it has succeeded in becoming the most popular typeface in the world. It was originally named Neue Haas Grotesk, but was renamed Helvetica (from the Latin name for Switzerland) by the German Stempel foundry when they produced versions in 1961.

Univers is a classic Swiss neo-grotesque typeface designed by Adrian Frutiger. It was released in 1957, the same year as two other famous neo-grotesques—Folio and Helvetica. The design of Univers is somewhat similar to that of Helvetica, as both were based on the 1896 typeface Akzidenz Grotesk. Univers contains an absolutely huge variety of weights and widths, making it a much more flexible type family than Helvetica.

Classificazione Vox dei Fonts

Nel 1954 Massimiliano Vox, studioso di caratteri francese, propose una classificazione dei caratteri molto dettagliata ed estesa, che nel 1962 l’Associazione Tipografica Internazionale adotta come classificazione ideale. Questa classificazione oggi viene riconosciuta nella sigla DIN 16518 (A. Typ. I.) e suddivide i caratteri tipografici in 11 grandi famiglie.
