Okay, vague asks so that you can let your brain ramble all you want: favourite things about Vex ?
Oh, Vex. Vex-Vex-Vex-Vex.
Ok so I started to get attached to the characters (as opposed to just enjoying the banters and the fights) during the Vasselheim arc, and that’s where my understanding of Vex went from “ok so she’s the cool girl and the other two are the good girl and the akward girl” to “ok there’s more to her (and to the others)” during that arc too. Her reaction to being forced to part with Vax had my ears perk up, so to speak, and then (because she’s in a bad mood) she’s so catty with Zahra only to bond with her over shitty dads and I was like. Yes. Those are things I can get behind.
But the moment I truly fell in love with her was when they come back to Greyskull Keep and the cook points out that they haven’t fucking paid the staff and among the party Vex is the most ashamed and immediately uses her own money to pay the staff because the party funds aren’t enough (Vax gives money too, they both get it in a way that the others just don’t seem to) but while she does that she puts on her most aristocratic, Grande Dame drawl ? And idk, something clicked here, I just went “you poor fucking idiot, I am going to love you with all my heart” and I never saw any reason to go back on that.
Vex is an extraordinarly messy character, deeply stuck in the past (past humiliations, past guilt), and I both love and hate that she pretends so hard all the time, that she’s fine, that she got this, and I both love and hate that she comes to Percy speaking of forgiveness as if what she did (killing two people in self defense) is in any way comparable to what he did (hey remember when he tortured a kid and that somehow wasn’t his wake up call ?). Because her vulnerability and the way she constantly doubts herself while refusing to face or vocalize those feelings almost all the time really draws me to the character, I feel, for lack of a better word, protective of her, but also I just want her to be happy ! I wish she could just be happy !
And I love and hate that she’s at heart a caretaker whith a soft spot for lame dogs, constantly collecting strays (all of Vox Machina is included in that statement), because that’s lovely but they should take care of her more ! and I love and hate that her Hunt ends with her being first compassionate, then doubting herself and going back on that only to doubt herself again, never knowing if she made the right choice because it’s just so symbolic of her whole character it makes me want to tear my hair out.
But enough of this love and hate shit, here’s what I love wholeheartedly about her : I love every time she talks to Trinket, I love how smart (the kevdak fight, the vorugal fight) and how funny she is (her limerick for Scanlan, the bathroom scene, there’s too many really), I love that in many ways she’s still the scrappy little runaway who will fight tooth and nails to see another day, I love when she gets selfish and vicious and toughtless when you’re touching something precious to her (even if it’s just Keyleth starting to consider dating Vax), I love her relationship with her brother, the back and forth, the good and the bad, the blindspots, the unconditional love and loyalty, I love her romance with percy because she drops the facade for him more than for anyone else and he’s always ready to meet that with absolute support and trust and he understands her even when she doesn’t put it into words (but also for more superficial reasons lol) and I love ! that she’s like that with money because whenever she haggles I hear the-lady-knight grumbling “but it cost me two whole euros >:(” and i am overcome with fondness.
I also love her ending, that she gets to be the Champion of one of those stupid authority figures because that’s important for her, and that she gets to have a family and to belong and to be the protector of a land, because even though those aren’t usually my kind of ending, it’s clearly what she’s be searching for all her life and now she here’s, she’s Home. It’s good.
Special mention goes to her love of flying, though. She’s just so happy in the air in a way that is so uncomplicated and contagious, for once metaphorically weightless, and it’s great, she deserves the sky, she deserves that absolute freedom away from any critical eye, I will never get tired to see her soar.
#not sure if this makes any sense but i don't have the strenght to re-read myself right now#anyway vex good also i just really love archers all the time it's just an inescapable a fact of life#critical role#*an inescapable fact of life#ask#long post
