Hagsploitation truly is the horror sub-genre that keeps on giving. Sparked by the unexpected success of 1962’s What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? in the 1960s and 70s, maturing female stars of golden age Hollywood extended their careers by swallowing their pride, embracing their inner scream queen and plunging into exploitation shockers: think of Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Tallulah Bankhead, Olivia de Havilland, Agnes Moorehead and Shelley Winters starring in the likes of Strait-Jacket, Hush … Hush … Sweet Charlotte, Berserk, Lady in a Cage, Die Die My Darling, Dear Dead Delilah and especially the “question movies” Whoever Slew Auntie Roo?, What’s the Matter with Helen? and What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice? Roaring back from career doldrums (I last remember her playing Miley Cyrus’ mother), 61-year-old Demi Moore finds herself in a similar position in director Coralie Fargeat’s grisly and stylish satire The Substance. In a gutsy, exposed (in every sense) performance, Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a middle-aged television celebrity abruptly fired by ageist and sexist network executive Dennis Quaid (really chomping the scenery). Despondent, Elisabeth takes desperate measures to rejuvenate her “best self” with a mysterious unregulated black market scientific procedure called The Substance … and things swiftly unravel. Characterized by stunning art direction and a visceral sound design that emphasizes every repulsive squelching noise, The Substance ratchets up maximum dread and offers a goldmine of knowing movie references: Basket Case. Carrie. Death Becomes Her. Every single David Cronenberg “body horror” flick but particularly The Fly. Thematically, it reminded me of two specific b-movies from the late 1950s: The Wasp Woman and The Leech Woman, in which the anti-heroine experiments with science (or voodoo) to restore youth and beauty with monstrous consequences (and – it must be noted - these films make their point with a fraction of The Substance’s budget and two hour-and 40-minute running time). The Substance is bound to be divisive. There was multiple “walk outs” when I saw it. And has Fargeat lost control of the material by the ultra-gory splatter fest finale? However you cut it, it’s a wild ride and destined for cult status.

Its your soul Dear~ | Alastor x Reader
Warning: Yandere!Alastor - Mentions of cannibal Alastor + Mentions of eating reader - Alastor its so mean in this - He is crazy for reader and not in love - Manipulative!Alastor - Maybe a part 2 - OFF CANON EVENTS AND OFF CANON IN TERMS OF TIME - grammar mistakes -
Alastor knows he is not in love with you, he knows his self cant love, cant feel that pathetic feeling.
But once a hunter then forever one. Thats s fact, when you found yourself in hell Alastor was the first to smell you. He was inside the Hotel when his sense went alert, ears high and eyes demonic. He soon sent his minions to look for you.
Did he want to eat you? He was not sure, he felt the need to own you.
Sonner than later he found you, you were so weak, he saved you from almost getting robbed and thats its the slightest problem you could have in hell.
However, Alastor knew how to play, he knew he had a centrain charm and you being new in hell would not know about him, how dangerous he was.
He covered his true intentions well, first guiding you to the Hotel where Charlie was extatic to meet you and give you a room. He showed you places in hell that where not so dangerous. He left one shadow of his to follow you around.
The only one who saw what he was doing was Husk. Who in his own way tried to warn you but was silenced by Alastor himself. He decided to step aside after that.
If something Alastor liked doing was playing with his meal. He made you trust him so much, whatever he said you ate it without a second tought. He would tell you to jump and you would ask how high. He made you depend on him, for whatever and small thing, following and asisting him like a good pet.
Alastor could still teast your soul, it gave off the most delicious smell a cannibal like him would feel, but he also felt the sweet smell and soft self of it. Showing that you were in hell by a low sin you had made.
He never cared, he wanted you. Wanted to take your neck in his hands and chocke the life out of you, see your eyes go dull, then he would devour you, maybe he would start with your chest, opening up and taking your heart in his hands. He then will go after your lungs. Oh, how he desired to be all messy with your blood.
But one meal and one second of teast would be the same as this? Having you by his side? Never leaving him? He knew you would end being something others could use against him, thats why he decided to make a few fixes to it.
First, he needed you to have some power, and heavens did he found it. His voodoo magic was perfect. He tried it, first cursing you then using a doll....he removed your arm and your own body lose it too. Then he made it be back and soon you were all made as new.
Does this mean he could devour you multiple times?
He just needed to have your soul. And he being as manipulative as he was did it. First he made a plan, you would end lost and he would tear your limbs apart, then he would appear faking saving you and proposing you a deal that would make you think if favors you.
Of course it did not.
"Your soul my dear, in exchange for my protection, no one will ever hurt you again, no one will even think on getting close to you"
Because only I can make you suffer and scream, only i can have you.
The explosion of green was the final. Alastor owned you, soul and body. He decided to kept his charming way but could not help and find himself festing over you. He made sure to put you back again and even trear your injuries.
It affected you badly, the one you tought was your friend ended being a cannibal and killer, and no one wanted to help you.
You had dig your own grave.
Whenever he went, you did as well, when he was hungry you were there to snack from. He never once hitted you or mocked you, he mostly treated you as a dumb pet.
His dumb pet.
And by heavens, you were his favorite. He would exchange thousands of souls just for you.
Because your screams and tears were the best he had ever tried.
He knows he was once a hunter, reduced to this look...the one of a deer, the shame he must carry. Maybe thats why he always smiles and has forced himself to be even more dangerous and mysterious.

WELCOME TO THE BIG EASY!
Below the cut, are a few things to do in and around the city to make your trip even more worthwhile!
OKTOBERFEST
Presented by Deutsches Haus, Oktoberfest NOLA brings Germany’s beloved celebration to the Crescent City for three weekends filled with German culture, cuisine, and fun. Fest-goers can expect a host of authentic German foods, live music, dances, and activities. There is also a 6K race with route from the fest and inside the Fairgrounds. Sponsored by the New Orleans Track Club (Saturday October 12)!
THE AUDUBON NATURE INSTITUTE
"At Audubon Nature Institute, everything we do comes back to conservation. We want to instill in our visitors and the community an appreciation for the natural world so that together, we can make a difference for the world’s wildlife."
CEMETERY TOURS/VISITS
Burying the dead in a place built below sea level was a problem that faced the earliest residents of the French settlement that became New Orleans. The solution agreed upon, to entomb the departed in elaborate marble chambers above ground, created one of the city’s most lingering attractions: cemeteries that are both historic and hauntingly beautiful. Wander the purported resting places of voodoo queen Marie Laveau, musician Al Hirt and Civil War general P.G.T. Beauregard, all residents of what is known in New Orleans as the Cities of the Dead. Many offer guided tours, others you can explore on your own.
OTHER THINGS TO DO/VISIT INCLUDE:
Tour down Bourbon Street
Visit the Museum of Death
NOLA Museum of Art
Besthoff Sculpture Garden
Visit/tour The Cabildo and the Presbytère
Vue Orleans
And so much more!

Some WoF Culture Headcannons:
MudWings:
Heavily farming and ranching based infrastructure
Since they’re right between the RainWings/NightWings, SeaWings, and SkyWings, the swamps are a huge trade center
They trade leathers and wheat with other tribes
HUGE feasts for celebrations
A holiday called Beef Fest (shortened from “Day of Many Cattle”) that is the anniversary of a mythical day where there were supposedly twice as many cows in the fields as there were the night before
Celebrated with a huge, tribe-wide feast of beef cooked in every way imaginable
The more silks and beads a MudWing has on, the higher ranked they are and bracelets show their rank within their troop (one for every younger sibling, and BigWings wear one big bangle-type bracelet with all of their siblings’ names engraved in it
Every troop has to build their own den. This serves as a sort of coming of age ceremony for them all and provides adequate housing for the tribe
Dragonets sleep in one big den on animal furs designated for different troops
Actually somewhat religious (probably worshiping the swamps or something of the like, and some voodoo-type beliefs and practices) and have designated priests and witch-doctors that hold ceremonies and pray for good harvest
SeaWings:
Semi-religious (worshiping the ocean and thanking her for their meals)
Very superstitious (mainly about sea spirits and ghosts, but some of them (mostly dragonets) believe in sea monsters)
Its extremely taboo to pierce any of their fins except the ones on their face that aren’t the main one down their spine, because some dragons pierced the wrong spot and couldn’t detect movements in the water as well as before (which the SeaWings (who don’t know anything about how their bodies actually work) interpreted as “the ocean’s mad at us for piercing our fins and is trying to kill us”)
…which of course means that a few modern rebels will pierce their spinal fins to look edgy
OCEAN PRIESTESSES who speak to the ocean and tell the future with whale bones
They have a few holidays: Dolphin Day (the day that the dolphin migration passes over the Deep Palace and they all go out to meet them), the day they test for animuses (they all get off of work/ school and have a big feast where they adorn the newly discovered animuses in strings of pearls and lapis to display their new rank), and the Arts Festival (self-explanatory)
Status is shown by how many pearls and fish bones (mostly for priestesses) they wear as jewelry and how much red fabric they wear (because they don’t have the stuff for red dyes, so they have to trade for it)
Wrap their dead in blue or green fabrics with bags of sand and sink them into a trench
For weddings, they perform a special dance together with red ribbons tying their talons together
RainWings:
Not much in the way of status, but merchants wear lots of silks and the queen traditionally wears lots of beads and jewelry (mostly just so people know which one she is)
Very good at making silk
Amazing craftsmen and architects
There are a few dragons whose whole jobs are carrying around the pieces of a canopy and perch for the royal family (they can get it up and down in a matter of minutes)
No real religion, but they do believe that Jaguars are some sort of all knowing spirit (Glory, of course, told them it was ridiculous, but even she was a little skeptical when one saved her from a snake while Deathbringer was distracted by eyeing a bird suspiciously) and even when they were carnivores, anyone who harmed a Jaguar for any reason was banished
They have lots of annual parties but not really any holidays
Big, cheerful funerals
Weddings are full of flowers, and the ceremonies consist of synching their scales in rippling patterns, and playing games together
NightWings:
Three goddesses named after the moons who are sisters
Perception is the goddess of the mind and grants mind reading
Oracle is the goddess of time and grants prophecy (obviously)
Imperial is the goddess of power and can grant either to her whim
The queen must be christened by the light of the three moons and wears three silver earrings that symbolize each of the moons. They believe that if a queen is unworthy, she will be blinded by the light (one time, a new queen somehow managed to get something in her eyes and was executed) (there were many NightWings who only accepted Glory as queen after she underwent the ceremony)
Three priestesses (one for each goddess and wear the silver earring for their goddess) who are dragonesses with the powers of each (mind reading for perception, prophesy for Oracle, and both for Imperial) and if there aren’t any available in time, a princess (for Imperial) or the daughters of the previous priestess of Oracle and Perception (priestesses of Imperial are sworn to maidenhood) (this is what they did on the volcano
Silver is a status symbol
In the old kingdom, there were entire institutes dedicated to star mapping
Mainly trade with knowledge, since they don’t really make anything
On the volcano, obsidian was farmed and used to trade with other tribes in case they needed to. They occasionally send teams to the volcano now to get what they can
A holiday celebrating three full moons where they focus on the dragonets hatched that night
Burn the dead
Wedding ceremonies are blessed by Imperial and the betrothed are covered in strings of star-shaped silver and they wear matching moonstone accessories (usually horn rings or tail bangles)
SandWings:
Originally nomadic until some MudWings came and helped them build towns, but some dragons chose to maintain their traditions
Mainly cactus and spice-based diet, so they have rooftop farms for them
In inter-tribal settlements (Sanctuary and Possibility) they are commonly mail carriers because of their lower need for food and water
Religion wise, they have a goddess named Mapapra who is the goddess of the desert (travelers pray to her for safe passage across the dunes), Naso (god of water, who they pray to for their sparse rainfall, and to keep the oasis water clean), and Nocabe god of harvest
There are a few traveling priests for each of the gods, who mainly just do ceremonies
SandWings LOVE ceremonies, so they do things like meditation and burning incense. The Scorpion Den is a myriad of smells
Whenever they get rain, a festival is held and everyone gets off of work and had a huge feast outside of the gates of the royal palace
They love spices
Festivals are common and music is a huge part of their culture
On the opposite end of the spectrum from SeaWings, SandWings use pierced frills to show status/lineage/achievements (for example, Sunny wears one rose-gold (the metal associated with SandWings) hoop (symbolic of a mother) and a silver (NightWing) stud (father) for her hybrid status, and a golden and obsidian chain from her left ear to the middle of her frill to show that she’s a princess)
They bury their dead in the sand
Weddings are musical and lively. The newlyweds twine their tails together and sing a traditional duet
IceWings
The most hygienic of the tribes
As stated in the books, they worship “the first egg”, but the also have Panagkhal, god of fish (the fishing villages pray to him for plentiful fish in their next haul), Yeloa, goddess of snow, and her sister, Nieba, goddess of ice
The more they wear, the higher their rank (especially after Snowfall destroys the rankings)
Polar bear fur is a sign of priests
No holidays or big celebrations
Ceremonies include everyone jumping in the ice fishing holes for a good haul of fish, and meditating in the middle of a blizzard
Believe that naming a dragonet after someone will make them like that dragon (like naming dragonets after honorable animuses and not naming them Arctic or the names of other traitors). This is why there are a lot of repeats in names (lots of queens named Diamond)
Very traditionally aligned
Obsessed with diamonds
Refuse to teach dragonets about anything other than tradition until they can perform the most complex ceremonies by memory alone
When two IceWings are wed, the ceremony is nothing if not elegant. They hold hands and recite ancient oaths, surrounded by falling snow
SkyWings:
Not religious, but very spiritual
They use rings to show their social status (for example, the royalty have four horn rings and queens have rings on their wings with strings of gems between)
There are sky monks that meditate on the tops of mountains and make wards and charms from bird feathers and gemstones
Can’t farm on the mountains, but they’re wonderful shepherds
They mostly trade with the SeaWings (red dyes/fabrics for fish and artwork)
They manufacture wool and wool products for trade with other tribes
Usually inter-tribal messengers, but they prefer to use trained birds to send messages within the tribe
Their only holiday is Ancestors’ Day, where they set up massive shrines for dead loved ones and perform a big dance together to honor them
Weddings are overseen by monks, and the spouses wear rings they made for each other
SilkWings (mostly pre-Tree Wars):
They used to have bridges and hammocks connecting the trees together
They had little groves of fruit trees that they farmed (mostly so they could be semi-independent from the LeafWings) in the north and south of the continent
They had a bi-annual holiday called Migration Day, where they all packed up their favorite things and flew to the north in the summer and the south in the winter to tend the farms there and escape the cold weather
Much of their culture was forgotten after the Tree Wars, but a few elders stubbornly uphold traditions
There were entire groups of trees dedicated to housing chrysalises
They celebrate their sixth birthday twice: once on their actual birthday, and once when they’ve finished metamorphosis
Their schools were on the forest floor to accommodate wingless dragonets
Status was shown by gemstones decorating their wings
They wrap their dead in their mourners’ silk and burn it with Flamesilk. They call this the final metamorphosis
For weddings, the spouses are left in solitude to braid their silks together into matching bracelets symbolic of their relationship
HiveWings:
Like NightWings, they mainly trade knowledge and expertise with a few manual laborers scattered around
They love to travel and learn about other tribes, so a lot of them are traveling medics, teachers, and anthropologists
Also in the strain of travel, they take keepsakes from wherever they’ve been to put in showrooms and foyers to impress guests
Their favorite things to get from the Pyrrhian tribes are wool cloaks from the SkyWings and obsidian from the NightWings
They love to organize things: jobs, houses, family units, troops
They love it so much that they have a whole holiday about it, where they take off from work and school to empty their homes of everything they don’t use anymore and reorganize the whole place
Dragonets’s skills (strength, ability and willingness to learn, natural talent) are assessed very early so that they can be taught in the best way possible
After the SilkWings are freed, they offer medical expertise and help with organizing others’ homes
Pre-Tree Wars, they lived in hollowed out trees and mountain caves
Status is shown by how much they wear and how much they’ve decorated their home
In funerals, the deceased are covered in flowers and gems and lowered into graves hidden in the mountains
Weddings are uniform and carefully planned out. The betrothed buy elaborate jewelry and put together big ceremonies. They recite oaths to secure their bond
LeafWings:
They domesticate animals to help them hunt and navigate the Poison Jungle
They don’t have any gods, but they are superstitious and believe in things like curses and bad luck
It’s extremely taboo to kill a plant
They tell status by how big their personal tree groves are and how many furs they wear. Leaf speakers have live plants growing around their horns
The PoisonWings have a coming of age ceremony where dragonets spend 5 days alone in the jungle in order to prove they can survive (there are SapWing scouts that watch them and rescue the ones who look like they won’t survive)
When a dragonet hatches, their parents help them to plant their own tree that they care for and nurture over the course of their life. Dragons with the healthiest trees are praised and sometimes become shamans
Shamans are spiritual leaders that live in solitude in the jungle and do things like bless ceremonies and ward off curses and bad luck. They can come from and perform ceremonies for either group of LeafWings, and often intermingle
When a LeafWing dies, they’re buried beneath their tree and the tree is decorated by their loved ones
In weddings, a shaman says blessings while a leafspeaker grows flowering vines around them

Tonight! The MONSTERS en La Mezcalli
by Susana Iglesias
(abajo en Español!)
You think about James Dean before you go to sleep, you look at his picture, I know because I do the same thing. I'm walking down the street of Gabino Barreda listening to Elvis. Since April 2016, Born to be Cheap organized wild parties, the first was very close to here, in a space above Numantina, a cantina in the San Rafael neighborhood. Denep Velasco/Denepa Panky & Matt Watson live among thousands of vinyls, they not only collect them, they spin them to exist. The name of their parties comes from a Divine song called that way. And yes, it seems that this pair was not born to do what others tell them, they have been 8 years of intense trash rock'n'roll, they play killer albums, never fillers, garage, punk, rockabilly, surf, blues Denepa is from Azcapotzalco and Matt from London, from a town called Epsom. They are a luxury, the music of their parties has elegance, style, also the beautiful and original turntables made by their ally Dr Tornas, a mysterious character who gives a turntable made by him on each anniversary of the Born to the winners of their traditional annual dance competition.
To celebrate their 8th anniversary they organized several dates with the legendary Swiss band The Monsters. The first was last Thursday the 25th at Gato Calavera, yesterday in Cuautitlán Izcalli at Sham Rock, today they are playing at a venue in the Guerrero neighborhood, tomorrow they will be in Tijuana at the Black Box, from there they will head to Reno, LA, Seattle , Oslo, Amsterdam, Berlin, Greece, Madrid, will not stop dynamiting ears, souls and minds until July 6, accompanies them on the tour playing records with Pete Slovenly who plans to take The Monsters to the We're Loud Fest in 2025 which will be in Kenya. Pete years ago took them on tour in Vietnam. It was difficult to recover after seeing them live at the Gato Calavera, it was brutal. Devastating & precise power, they opened with Search, in seconds the shirts, boots and glasses flew through the air while The Love I never had played, then came Blow Um Mau Mau, their damn rock and roll trash exploded in our faces and hearts , the frantic faces chanted until they almost fainted in the little hell of sweat and screams of wild rockers.
The songs advanced mercilessly and deadly, while Voodoo Love played I saw Brent Amaker smile, yes the famous country singer from the Seattle scene was next to me. Carrion Kids, present. Chav, a rocker, came from San Francisco to see them. Peppers, drummer of Shifters, took the playlist. Too much rock: El Muertho from Tijuana played yesterday at El Kentucky, a rebel space they set up in what was a KFC on Av. Juárez, it was the party of the unique HeYo radio station. There are not many spaces for REAL rock, that which does not whine, nor hypocritically champions anarchy and accepts change from officials. I know you cry when you remember that James Dean is dead. You spin your records thinking there is no tomorrow. Nights like cars at high speed. Please: forever: Stay sick.
