Catch Queer API Narratives Next Week at the ECC!
What does "queer API" mean to you? Let's discuss on November 7, in the ECC Asian Room, from 5 to 6 pm! Queer API Narratives is a discussion group for people who identify as queer and Asian/Pacific Islander. Come to discuss our lived experiences within the intersection of such identities, to find solidarity among each other, and to heal. At our first general meeting of the year, we'll be discussing what "queer API" means to all of us. Additionally, we'll open the floor to anything you want to talk about. All ideas and thoughts are welcome - this is a safe space to discuss what this world doesn't give us the room to do so. They'll also be snacks and drinks, along with a poetry reading by queer API artists. This event is done in collaboration between the Queer Student Commission, the Asian Student Commission, and the Pacific Islander Student Commission. A special thank you to the Ethnic Cultural Center for hosting this space. More info on the Facebook page. If you're coming, make sure to hit that "going" button, and invite all your queer API friends!
Transgender Day of Remembrance Is Nov 20
(TW: violence, anti-trans bigotry)
November 20, 2017 is Transgender Day of Remembrance: an observance that honors the memory of trans lives lost to violence. The Q Center and the Queer Student Commission are hosting a gathering on campus to attend the vigil at King Avenue UMC, which will begin at 7 pm. Additionally, we will be hosting a week of programming on the week prior, from November 13 to 17. From reflections in the Q Center, to an open discussion about the legislative rights of trans and nonbinary students at the UW, we want to hear what you wish to see - please email us at [email protected] and [email protected], or talk to us in the Q Center or in the QSC's office in HUB 131P, if you have any thoughts, ideas, questions, or concerns. "The Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people -- sometimes in the most brutal ways possible -- it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice." - TDoR founder, trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith
