U Happy? I'm Happy :)

So for the past weeks - FINE, MONTHS - I've basically been a tambay/kaladkarin/palamunin at home. Nope, I haven't given up on life, I'm just on this extended waiting-slash-vacation time while I wait for my master's program to start this September. In other words, I just have too much time on my hands right now, and I figured that I will probably never experience this much free time in my life ever again. So I thought that since I'm already contributing to the unemployment statistics of the Philippines, I might as well do some sort of community service to compensate. Which led me to stumble upon U! Happy Events - a non-government organization that organizes fun events for marginalized kids (orphans, terminally ill, etc).

U! Happy Events works fairly simply: they post their upcoming events on their blog, and if you're interested in any of them, you just text their number, then show up at the event. Easy as that! There's a volunteer fee of P250 which covers your meal, your ID, baller, volunteer card, etc. The fee also covers the expense of the child you're "sponsoring."

Anyways, I attended their event last July 27 with two of my friends - (Sir) RJ and Jireh. It was a kiddie party at Jollibee Sheridan with children with rare congenital disorders from the Philippine Society of Orphan Disorders. Allow me to let the pictures do the talking :)

Freebies! Though I must say, I got a little disappointed when I realized they were for the kids only lol!

Each table was assigned 1-2 kids. Kuya Harvard instructed us to get to know each other by saying our names, our favorite color, and our favorite cartoon character. The catch was, nothing should be repeated. For example, if someone already mentioned red, you have to choose another color. I introduced my name as Ate Weanne, said yellow was my favorite color, and for lack of quick thinking skills, gave Sailor Moon as my favorite character (I mean, yeah sure, the 90s were the best decade for cartoons, but Sailor Moon wasn't even my favorite - Sailor Mercury was!)

Apparently, Jireh and some of his tablemates repeated a color, so as parusa, they had to give a quick dance in front. Go Jireh!

We then played a game of charades. Sir was the chosen representative from our group, and he sure did his best, but let's admit it - guessing the names of Disney princesses is more up a girl's alley lol. To his credit, he guessed Frozen/Princess Elsa right naman, but even I would have had a hard time getting Princess Tiana right.

The second game was about making faces. Kuya Harvard would announce emotions (constipated, shocked, kilig), and everybody, including the kids, had to show their best facial interpretation of the emotion. The table with the best faces wins.

Our kid actually did pretty well! We would give her an example of the facial expression, and she would copy it right down to the hand gestures and eye twitches. Best actress si te! I'm pretty sure she had no idea why she had to copy the crazies around her, but she still did. High fives all around!

And then everybody's best friend, Jollibee, came out with a special dance. One of our kids had been non-reactive the whole time, but when Jobee came out, she came to life! (On the other hand, if an actual giant bee suddenly danced in front of me in real life, I would run the heck away in the opposite direction lol.)

Lunch was served, and of course it was Langhap Sarap Chicken Joy and spaghetti. Alangang magpakadiva kami don at hindi kumain, so even though our vegetarian cells were revolting, Sir and I just chalked it up to a cheat day. We just ate the chicken skin parts and attempted to remove the beef parts from the spaghetti lol :)

P.S. You know how sometimes celebrities celebrate their birthdays by spending it with less fortunate kids as their way of giving back? I've always wanted to do something like that but didn't know where to find the kids, or organize such an event. U!Happy Events makes it happen! All you have to do is tell them your preferences: date, number of children, preferred organization, activity, venue, etc. and they'll organize everything for you! They'll even run the program and games for you themselves. You can take kids out on a field trip, to a concert, to a party at Jollibee, to an art workshop, etc. So go ahead, unleash your inner Angelina Jolie! Check out their website www.uhappyevents.com for details. For now hanggang volunteer lang muna ako, because you know, temporary unemployment (translation: walang pera lol.)
