Still a bit bummed that *waves hands* things happened with the VLD Occult Zine, Beyond the Veil...but that just means I get to share this with everyone a bit sooner!  Here’s my Allurance piece from the bonus zine, What Lies in Wait!

Allura had never been one to seek power for the sake of power.

But now there wasn’t time, and she did not have the luxury to take the path she preferred while those with ill intentions were already moving to make a grab for power that she could intercept.  It made her desperate, when so many people were counting on her, and she said as much to Lance, in a rare quiet moment between them.

“Hey, don’t worry so much about it, Princess.  It’ll come to you.”   Lance gave her one of his patented smiles, naive and self-assured, and Allura returned it with a wan one of her own.

“If only it were that easy, Lance.”  Her mouth thinned into a straight line as she leafed through the book in her lap.  It was one Coran had selected for her out of her father’s collection, and it was bittersweet, to imagine perusing it together, a thought so vivid it was almost like conjuring his presence back to her side.  Allura sighed, frustrated.  “Truth be told, it’s hard to find the clarity I need when all I can think about is what happens if I fail.”

Lance stepped around the table where Allura was seated and planted his hands on the flat surface once he was next to her.  This close, at eye level, there was no mistaking the determined look he was giving her.  “You’re an amazing, talented woman, Allura.  You’ll get it.” His expression shifted to something more familiar, light and playful.  “But maybe you should take a break!”  He grinned and brought his face in even closer.  “Give yourself a little time to indulge…just a little bit.  It could make a big difference, you know?”

HEY Y’ALL I’M IN A ZINE

Cast Aside Your Shadow

a preview of the piece I wrote for @vld-occult-zine!

He’d awoken to fire, but he opens his eyes to flame. The earth is rough and cold beneath as its leaden weight digs into his spine. It’s dark and smoky. He can’t make out his surroundings in the flickering light. Shadows dance. He can’t find their centers in the twisting, roiling darkness. When his eyes finally focus, his gaze lands on a pale face.

“You’re here,” murmur thin, cracked lips. “Shiro?”

He gasps. His lungs don’t want to remember the steady rhythm of breath, but they don’t have a choice. This is wrong. His chest aches as his heart begins to hammer. It beats against his ribs like a caged bird. Trapped. He’s trapped.

Then fight, comes a whisper. He did this to you.

Witch.                                        

He rolls onto his side, dizzied, and tries to catch himself, but there’s only empty space at his side. The man reaches for him and he jolts back, nearly toppling into the flames. His hand falls on hot metal and he glances down, curls his fingers around the hilt of the knife, ignores the blistering heat that sinks into his skin. When he pulls the blade from the flames, it glows cherry red.

“Stay back,” he growls, staggering to his feet.

Hi! I know you've worked on zines before, so I was wondering if you had any advice as far as applying/making sure they're legit goes? I don't really have a "presence" on tumblr/social media and haven't made fanart since entering college. I'm at a place where I'm comfortable with my art, and think zines would be super fun to participate in! But I'm kind of worried because I'd be going in with only a few fanart pieces for an application. Anything would be helpful, thanks!

Oh! I hope zines go really well for you number one.

Number two, my biggest advice is check the mods. See what their other projects look like, and if they look good then it’s probably legit. If this is their first project then my advice is ask questions!!!! Any thing you are concerned about you should feel comfortable sending the zine blog an ask about (assuming it’s not on the faq) or messaging a mod privately (mods from all the things I’m in get so many questions from me)

But I am really glad to hear you’re putting yourself out there! ♥️ I wish you all the luck!!! Come back and let me know how your zine experiences go, and don’t be afraid to DM me on here if you have any questions about specifics of applications!!!! I’ve done a whole lot at this point and I like helping people with zine concerns because zine are such great projects!Edit: if you’re concerned about going in with only a few works my advice is make sure to have at least ONE work representing the theme of the zine you’re applying for (yoi, occult, voltron, etc etc) I went into my first few zines with one Yuri P drawing for Yuri On Ice and a bunch of just general drawings and I got a few rejections until I built my fan art portfolio but don’t get discouraged

Lance shot her a winning smile and straightened. “That’s what I like to hear.  Come on, I know just the thing.”  Allura took Lance’s offered hand and let him pull her away from the table and steer her out of the study and into the lounge onto the couch.  “Here we go, get nice and comfy and let Lancito take care of you.”  Lance tucked a pillow behind her.  “When was the last time you took a spa day, Princess?”

Welcome to the Voltron Occult Zine

What content will be featured in the zine?

As you may have already guessed, the Voltron Occult Zine will pay homage to some of the classic pillars of the Occult and everything they encompass. Artists and writers will be asked to select a crystal, of which they will draw upon the symbolism of for inspiration for their final pieces. The explicit mentioning of and/or use of its image in the piece will not be necessary, but is always welcome.

Potential occult themes include, but are not limited to:

vampirism/lycanthropy (historical)

reincarnation

Please note: we would like to take every opportunity to reiterate that this zine is an exploration and celebration of the Occult, not a Halloween zine.

The Voltron Occult Zine is a charity zine whose proceeds will go to the Ojai Raptor Center and Project Wildsong.

Will the zine be general content or ship oriented?

The zine will feature a mixture of both general and ship related content, however all merch will be general content.

How will the zine be distributed?

The zine will be offered in both digital and physical format. We will also be offering at least one merch bundle option, but are hoping to offer two!

What are the application requirements for writers?

When applications are released you will be asked to link us directly to a maximum of three of what you believe are your best works. Uncompleted multi-chapter fics will be accepted, but you’ll need to select just one chapter for us to read. Unpublished works will also be accepted.

What is the word allowance for participating writers?

Due to formatting concerns we will be using a document size limit instead of a word limit. In a standard word document (letter size, 1" margins) with 12pt Arial font, that allows for about 7 pages. When formatted like a book (with paragraph indentations and no extra spacing between), this can allow up to around 3,500 words.

What are the dimensions for participating artists?

The zine will be printed in A5, so we ask all artists to make their final submissions in that size (148 x 210 mm or 5.8 x 8.3 in). For image quality sake, they must also be no lower than 300dpi and in CMYK.

What is the official schedule?

The current schedule is:

When can contributors share their works?

Sneak peek sketches can be shared at any point throughout the process, while rendered sneak peeks and small written excerpts will begin once a mod has accepted your contribution as 100% complete. Full works may be posted once all pre-orders have shipped.

As the Mod Team of the Voltron Occult Zine, we believe in being as forthcoming as possible. Transparency is something that we believe in wholly, as well as dealing with difficult situations when they arise. That being said, after receiving an anonymous ask with an inflammatory tone that we do not wish to have on the blog, we thought it best to handle this on our own terms while still being as public as possible with our handling of this.

We would like to make one thing completely clear to anyone who comes across this zine project: while Satanism is often placed (rightfully) under the scope of the vast Occult umbrella, it is not synonymous with the Occult. To say that Occult practices are limited to those of the Satanic belief is a misinformed generalization. When we conceptualized and began executing this project, we didn’t do so with vapid and “trendy” reasoning, we did it as a group of people with both a love for and cumulative years worth of personal experience and exposure to the Occult. We titled the project accordingly.

The Occult, by definition, is a centuries old practice through various methods of pursuing hidden knowledge (with no specific religious relations), or if you’d like to go with the cut and dry textbook definition:

Historically speaking, many lost rituals dating back even to ancient Egypt are considered Occult. In fact, the incorrect association of the Occult and Satanism only became prevalent during the 19th century in relation to Eliphas Levi and Aleister Crowley. This was due to their use of Satanic imagery, despite not actually being Satanists themselves. We’re talking centuries of the two being completely separate in conversation; many 19th century freemasons were also Occultists, not to mention the countless Occultists who still practiced Christianity in that time period (some who shifted toward Paganism, again, not synonymous with Satanism).

You might have even looked at our blog icon. The Pentagram is for devil worshippers you say? Once more, wholly incorrect. This is, again, an instance of something that has existed for hundreds of years without Satanic connotations until just recently, sometimes it was even used to show the wounds of Christ.

We won’t call this project Wicca because that’s not what it’s about, the zine is an accurate celebration of the Occult while executing it in a manner and with subject matter that those with limited exposure to the Occult could still resonate with and enjoy. Wicca itself falls within the scope of what the Occult represents, and crystals are not the sole property of any one practice. Rest assured, this project is being handled by people who know and love what they’re talking about.

For anyone looking to understand more, here are some good starter articles on the matter. That being said, as the Occult is an incredibly wide reaching subject matter with dozens of subcategories, we encourage further individual research.
