Calavera
My take on La Calavera Catrina :> I like the bone texture of the weapon and the spiky/thorn detail on it. Also using the seasonal clown face paint.
This is seasonal version of Lifeblood and is inspired by Alitharas Barkundia's use of the clown make up in "Dia de los Muertos" from last year! Check it out~

BEHOLD, GROSS FLESH STICK.
I've always imagined that the red parts on Zeromus were exposed muscle tissue, so the Voidvessel weapons also having red bits makes me wonder if they're like... moist.
These things are so amazingly gnarly, whoever designed them definitely understood the assignment.

on vessels and alignment: part 1
time for me to elaborate on the soul/god/void scale for vessels other vessel headcanons are here and here!
just to establish some groundwork: when a vessel hatches, the three forces that went into it -- void, soul, and god -- will have different amounts of influence over the vessel. there are four main kinds: neutral, voidvessels, soulvessels, and godvessels.
let’s get into what that means!
oh and -- you are absolutely free to incorporate this into your own lore! i’d just appreciate some credit the first time, but i’m not fussed. go ham!! and if you do use these ideas, please please please tag me when you write about or draw your vessels!!!! i wanna see!!
some stuff + the four main kinds of vessel
most vessels are neutral, with an even balance between god, soul, and void. they almost always have slight skews (the hollow knight is slightly god-leaning and the broken vessel was a bit soul-leaning, but the knight is absolutely, perfectly neutral), though overall nothing throws their alignment off enough to start having uhhh. adverse effects. they can use spells normally, they absorb soul from living things, can consume abilities from memories and wield other gods’ powers with relative ease, and have a shade that mimics their “living” form. they all have a similar bodyplan, a mask, and a moderate number of horns.
skewed alignments come in a sliding scale, from slight to so extreme the vessel probably died before getting out of the egg. i’ll be focusing on the most extreme cases, because 1) they’re fun to think about and 2) anything less than “oh my god you’re one step off dead” can have traits picked and chosen from the worst case scenario. there are no hard and fast rules, go ham!
also like. body horror alert. some of these get real funky.
soulvessels
soulvessels are, almost universally, exceptionally frail. their shells are thin and prone to damage other vessels wouldn’t even notice -- but they are absolutely unrivalled by anything short of actual higher beings in their ability to cast spells. they range from being able to draw soul from their environment if they concentrate, to endlessly generating a boundless supply of soul.
soulvessels usually look like fairly normal vessels, though they’re often noticeably smaller and more spindly. their shells may also be grey instead of black, with some being nearly white in colour due to the almost complete lack of void.
the most skewed of soulvessels can create constructs made entirely of soul that have limited agency and function exactly like automatons. the vessel can give it instructions, and the construct will carry out its task until it’s either dismissed or its reservoir of soul is depleted.
despite their absurd casting ability, they tend to find it very hard or near impossible to focus. as such, they cannot heal effectively (or perhaps at all) -- which is typically disastrous when paired with how fragile they are.
soulvessels are, in short, extremely powerful glass cannons. they dish out incredible amounts of damage in a stupidly short amount of time, but fold with a stiff breeze.
this imbalance can be stabilised with access to void, and if the vessel survives to reach a source of void, it will likely be fine.
shadevessels
in stark contrast to soulvessels, shadevessels are the sturdiest of the vessel types. highly skewed shadevessels will take one of two forms: an amorphous pool of impure void, or an apparently normal vessel with an exceptionally tough shell.
the liquid ones can force themselves into a physical form for short periods of time, but often visibly leak everywhere. they may or may not have masks -- and even if they do have one, it may be malformed and incomplete. commonly, they appear to be a pitch-black puddle with an empty mask floating inside. they struggle to mimic a bug in any capacity, and most straight up can’t. however, just because they can’t hold a physical form for long does not mean they can’t move. liquid shadevessels are some of the fastest things hands down, able to clear a hundred metres in two seconds flat. they are also incredibly damage resistant (duh, they’re puddles of goo).
on the other hand, armoured shadevessels can take practically any damage and keep moving like nothing happened. to even scratch one is a remarkable feat; their shells repair themselves at a rapid pace, negating most damage they do take. they often have stiff movements and are noticeably slower than other vessels. mobility issues are common, and in the worst cases their joints can seize up from overactive void formations, or their shells can overheal and leave them incapacitated after an injury.
regardless of what kind of voidvessel, they have one thing in common: massively reduced ability to use or wield soul. they have such a deficit of soul that any soul they do get goes straight to maintaining their shade’s connection to their shell. and, in the case of armoured ones, their bodies are constantly in regeneration overdrive and burn soul with what is basically autofocus -- whether they need it or not. as a result of this, voidvessels are, basically, constantly starving for soul. if they don’t get enough, their shade can permanently separate from their shell and they turn into a sibling. voidvessels have a nasty habit of attacking anything that moves in a desperate attempt to get more soul to keep themselves alive. and sometimes, simply being around a voidvessel can sap the soul from any living thing.
voidvessels often cannot cast spells at all, or consciously focus.
however, this rampant soul absorption does come with a benefit: the more void skewed a vessel is, the less damage it will take from spells. some may absorb the attack completely with no ill effects, and in the most void-leaning cases, the vessel might even heal from the attack.
providing a voidvessel with a large, steady supply of soul will usually strengthen the connection between shade and shell and correct the worst of the effects.
godvessels
the last and rarest of the four main types, godvessels display a distinct similarity to one or both of their godly parents. this may take the form of the pale king’s horns or wings, the white lady’s crown of branches or root legs, or perhaps traits from both. and not only do they physically resemble their godly parents, they also have their parents’ abilities. now, please note this does not include spells (that’s the realm of soulvessels) -- it’s things like a wyrm’s foresight, a higher being’s influence over dreams, or... whatever it is the white lady does. they all give off at least some amount of light passively, and can consciously increase this to blinding levels.
interestingly, godvessels can almost universally teleport. the distance is usually determined by how skewed the vessel is, with the most god-leaning vessels able to teleport over a kilometre at a time.
they’re the most variable by a lot, and are also the most physically messed up. there’s no limit to how many additions a godvessel’s shell may have; as such, some are truly horrific amalgamations of both the pale king and white lady’s traits -- bristling with rootlike growths, too many limbs, an elongated body, ragged wings that can’t be used because of the branches. they are also the only vessel type that can have a mouth -- and boy can they ever. in some cases, their masks split vertically as well as horizontally, turning their entire heads into razor-lined petals.
godvessels are all over the map in terms of disposition. some are serene and ethereal, while others are feral beasts that cannot recognise friend from foe. they’re often in some level of pain, especially if they have any amount of root growth. trimming the offending branches usually helps, and sometimes a desperate godvessel will break them off itself, leading to an even more terrifying appearance.
correcting a godvessel’s skew is much harder than the other two unstable types. they need an evenly balanced amount of void and soul. due to how volatile they are, if too much of one or the other is absorbed at once... well, let’s just say bad things can happen.
because these four types aren’t all there is. no, not by a long shot. vessels can have two directions they skew in, but that is a matter for another post because boy HOWDY is this long enough as is.
update: if you wanna read more for some reason, here’s part two!
———---- -- -
if you got down here, congrats and thank you!! that was a ton of words
anyway yeah this is how vessels work in my lore and you can expect part two soonish -- i cannot wait to get into soulshades, godshades, and godsouls.
i plan to do some example designs eventually but it abruptly decided to Become Summer here so until that stops i’ll be melting
and again, you’re free to use these ideas if you want -- if you do, absolutely ping me! i’d love to see!

🔫 for the screenshot meme!
Voidvessel Guillotine
A great sword manifestation of Avi’li’s voidsent avatar, Piera, made flesh.
Avi’li’s and Piera’s power combines to unleash powerful dark arts.
—
Avi’li has so many weapons he loves, but Piera’s weapon forms are his sentimental favorites. She can possess or manifest as different weapons, and she’s who augments Avi’li’s skills as a dark knight and a reaper. One day I’ll write a lore post about her.

on vessels and alignment: part 2
this will not make any dang sense whatsoever if you’re not familiar with part one of this nonsense. i’m sorry it’s so long but fucked up alignment scales are one of my favourite things and i have Ideas.
this one is way more of a mess with very little organisation, unlike part one. i’m basically just listing all the horrible stuff that happens to highly skewed vessels at this point whoops it’s also not nearly as well edited or thought out, it’s mostly an idea dump.
anyway! let’s get into it!
so you have your four main types of vessel: neutral (the vast majority), voidvessel, godvessel, and soulvessel.
the alignment scale looks something like this right?
where you have your neutral vessels (the “ideal” for what they were made for), slightly skewed ones (have a leaning to an aspect but no massive downsides), and the fully skewed “oh my god how are you alive at all” ones.
it ends up like this. only fully skewed vessels get called the fancy name; anything else is just a vessel.
but wait... why’s it say “also the problem zone” at the bottom of that one image? and didn’t i say there were more kinds of vessels?
it sure does, and i sure did! there are, in fact, three more types! those happen when a vessel is fully skewed, but falls between two aspects.
they are: godshades (god/void), godsouls (god/soul), and shadesouls (void/soul). what’s that mean? for the most part, they share the advantages and drawbacks of both kinds of skew, but there’s some weirdness with each. let’s take a look!
godshades
the first thing that’s apparent about a godshade is just how big they are. towering over even other fully-grown vessels, godshades dwarf practically anything that isn’t a higher being.
like voidvessels, they may or may not be soild; and like godvessels, they can have a variety of traits from both godly parents.
liquid godshades can be hard to distinguish from liquid voidvessels at first. however, their void usually appears metallic or will have an oilslick sheen, unlike the pitch black of normal void. they also have an easier time maintaining a physical body, though they will always drip and leak.
they will always have at least eight limbs (if they’re solid), though the kind of limbs may not match. there may be wyrm arms, branches, and normal vessel legs on one single godshade. they can also have mouths, which are universally terrifying affairs. some individuals can split their entire heads open, and their mouths may extend down their torsos.
in addition to root growth from godvessels, they also suffer from voidvessels’ shell overgrowth and the ones with solid forms are always in constant pain.
they also get the short end of the stick, demeanour-wise. suffering from both constant pain and a voidvessel’s lack of soul, they viciously attack anything that moves in an attempt to absorb any amount of soul to stabilise their condition. the combination of insatiable hunger and constant agony means a godshade can basically never be reasoned with.
unlike godvessels, godshades can rarely teleport.
godsouls
godsouls, somehow, manage to be even more susceptible to physical damage than even highly skewed soulvessels. the combination of a soulvessel’s frailty and a godvessel’s extra limbs or branches makes a godsoul with far more breakable parts.
however, they make up for this by combining a soulvessel’s casting potential with higher beings’ abilities. this results in spells that are impossible to achieve for any other entity. the exact form these spells take is impossible to predict; it could be a spell based on wyrm foresight, where the godsoul foresees a future and casts a spell that will be activated upon that possibility coming true; it could be a combination of dream and spell that blurs the line between waking and dreaming. there’s really no limit here.
godsouls can not only teleport, but also create copies of themselves out of soul to serve as either decoys or teleport anchors (think quantum slime from slime rancher). there’s no real limit on the number of copies they can have, and as such can move between multiple locations in a fraction of a second.
godsouls are always a light grey or white. you will pretty much never see a godsoul with a dark shell, and because of this they often look the least like a vessel.
other than the extreme frailty and general downsides from a strong god skew, godsouls aren’t doing the worst here.
shadesouls
possibly the strangest, shadesouls were not meant to be. the soul and void that mostly composes them is at constant odds, and most have a split or patchy appearance.
none of them have consistent solid forms; there isn’t enough god in them for that. they’re puddles of constantly shifting liquid, though they always have a perfectly formed mask.
they tend to have a kind of calico appearance, with random patches of void and soul covering their surfaces. but, in some extreme cases, they flipflop back and forth between being pure white soul and pitch black void.
shadesouls usually mimic anything around them, and through this mimicry can learn abilities and spells alarmingly fast. however, they tend to lack creativity and agency, so they usually end up mimicking with no intent behind their actions.
if a normal vessel is hollow, shadesouls are empty.
final notes
dual skewed vessels are vanishingly rare; pretty much the only way to get a godsoul or a godshade is to expose a godvessel to either too much soul or too much shade, respectively. they almost never a natural occurrence.
shadesouls seem to form at complete random when multiple soulvessels and voidvessels have died in an area. and yes, this does mean the formation of a shadesoul can be induced. angst potential galore in these guys!!!!!
the full alignment chart looks like this (and yes, i’ll have a blank template without words posted soon in case anyone wants to map out their vessels’ alignments!)
————- – -
if you’ve read all of this and part one: thank u i love u oh my god ... if you read all of part two and didn’t read one: also thank u but wow you must be confused
ultimately, while i listed a ton of stuff in every category, there’s no hard and fast rules. make a godvessel who excels at spellcasting. have a godshade who somehow doesn’t have any of the really nasty effects. go ham! use this as a jumping off point, not a be-all end-all.
(and if you wanna show me what you do with these ideas. absolutely do oh my god it will not be annoying i can guarantee you)
