It is [Garegin Nzhdeh’s] “Meṛnelu kamk‘ĕ: Hay lēgēonakannerin” (The will to die: to the Armenian legionnaires) that lays bare [..] the author’s character and ideology. Nzhdeh’s fervent nationalism is reflected in his discussion of a homeland, where he writes, “The fatherland is a spiritual reality – it is a thing ‘from the soul and for the soul’” (voguts‘ ew vogu hamar). Resurrecting the legendary memory of Vardan Mamikonian, he reminds his readers – which he assumes to be largely legionnaires – of the Mamikonians’ vow: “for them their vow to die for fatherland was not solely a desire, an oath, but will… The will to die … is valor and happiness to die for one’s fatherland.” It is not for Nzhdeh a matter of the fatherland demanding such sacrifice “but because the conscious death is felt as supreme desire to subdue the eternal, to become immortal.” And just like the fifth-century Mamikonians who fought the more powerful Sasanian army and empire to preserve their Christian faith and autonomy, so too the legionnaires might die, but they will not be defeated. Indeed, he continues, their battle is not only for fatherland but also for the race (ts‘egh). Speaking directly to them, he prescribes, “so that your race and fatherland live, have the will to die for them.” For Nzhdeh, the “Armenian man” (hay mard) is worthless (anpētk‘) if he does not have that will, and moreover, whoever is against the cultivation of that will is “an internal enemy to our race (ts‘egh) and fatherland.” In this way, Nzhdeh leaves no room for dissent. He carves out only a single path: through the will to die the nation lives and the legionnaire becomes an “eternal” hero like the Mamikonians. Any alternative path is treachery to the nation.
