Vocaloid castle AU: Before the story (Luka)
TW: Abuse, assault, sexual violence, cults, homelessness, birth complications, blood, and near-death experiences mentioned!! They are not graphic whatsoever, but still be warned and be safe!! (I *did* say Luka didn't have it so easy in the comments of my last castle AU post)
Luka was homeless, traveling from village to village hoping to find a job,a house, some food,anything... But it just never worked out.
One day she was approached by shady men and kidnapped. They took her to a horrible horrible camp where they made her work as a slave for the leader of a cult. There were many other enslaved villagers there,of all different races, ethnicities and kingdoms... She was abused, beaten, assaulted, treated poorly, and among all the other woman, the cult members were sexually violent to her. She was assaulted in that way several times a week, and soon got pregnant from one of the cult members, though she couldn't tell who,as most of the men there had laid their hands on her at some point.
Eventually, some of the other enslaved villagers made an attempt to free as many people as they could, brave men and women sacrificed themselves by attempting to kill the cult leader. They failed, but that was actually part of the plan. They failed and stirred up commotion,so the many other enslaved people could try to make a break for it. Only a few got out alive,Luka being one of them.
She was exhausted from running while eight months pregnant, but kept on going so that the cult members couldn't catch her again.
The next day,she went into labour in the middle of the woods, and gave birth all by herself in a small clearing, this was a whole month early, probably because of all the abuse she went through. Luka experienced complications, but just barely managed to push her little bundle of joy,Kawane into the world.
Luka picked her up and shakily got to her feet, bleeding heavily. She wanted to get moving,as the blood on the ground was basically an invatation for large predators such as bears or wild dogs, who might attack her upon seekng her in a weakened state, covered in blood.
She hobbled herself to a village, bleeding out due to her complications, and collapsed on someone's doorstep.
An older couple opened the door and took her inside. They cleaned up Kawane and wrapped her in a warm blanket, and tried to stop Luka's bleeding.
They sent for a doctor, who managed to treat and stabilize Luka. She wasn't bleeding anymore, but she wasn't out of the woods yet.
Luka soon woke up to see the older woman rocking Kawane to sleep and giving her a bottle.
Luka fortunately made a recovery, though she still felt weak and exsausted for weeks after the incident.
At this time,Queen Solaria had heard about this, and sent knights to assassinate the cult members and leader, while also sending her personal bodyguard, known as the Blue Knight,to fetch Luka and bring her to the castle where the queen would provide her with a house, job, money, and food.
So Meiko sent out to get Luka. She had to take her own newborn,Sakine with her,as the journey was long and she couldn't leave Sakine with a wet nurse for days on end. So she took her with.
Once the wagon arrived,Meiko stepped out,and Luka was a bit intimidated and confused. Imagine the most prestigious knight in the entire kingdom, who is tall and has a strong build, muscular and carrying a five foot long sword, with intricate and expensive shining blue and golden armour, looking like she could eliminate an entire army within minutes, standing over you... And carrying the sweetest, cutest little baby girl in her arms.
The old couple bid Luka farewell, and Luka got into the front of the wagon with Meiko, who had a tiny basket sitting next to her that she put Sakine in,and kept one hand on at all times to ensure it didn't fall. She even provided one for Kawane.
Luka was hesitant to talk to the knight, but seeing the little baby made her less intimidated,as she seemed extremely gentle and caring towards her baby.
Eventually,Meiko stopped to feed Sakine and eat some dinner.
Luka, being the woman of Jesus she is,goes out of her way to not even look in the direction of Meiko's... Chest area... as she feeds her baby.
Kawa starts to cry,and Luka has no idea what to do. She's fed,she pooped literally fifteen minutes ago, she's not hurt... She tries her best to shush Kawane, but to no avail...
Meiko who,to Luka's horror, still isn't wearing her breastplate and has her tunic pulled up, then turns, and politely asks to see Kawane.
Luka isn't about to disagree with this woman,so she hands Kawa over. Meiko starts to burp her,and Kawane stops crying, though she does spit up onto Meiko's shoulder piece.
Meiko hands Kawa back and shows Luka how to burp her.
Soon, the four make it back to the castle, and Meiko is in charge of helping Luka get settled, and checks in on her every day, even when she wasn't required to check in anymore. She did this until she got the courage to ask Luka out,to which Luka accepted. The two courted for five years before finally getting married (Meiko proposed) and Luka could finally live a happy life with her babies and the woman she loved so dearly.
She's not afraid of looking at Meiko's chest anymore >//v//<

ᴘᴇʀsᴏɴᴀʟɪᴛʏ
At first glance, Kiril may look like your prefect, innocent little child.
Being a honor student, Kiril gains quite a trust from other students and even teachers. After all, why shouldn't he when he is nothing but kind and sweet to everyone! He also has a kind of charm, that people couldn't help but adore the little hermit.
Well, not exactly. From his old days, Kiril has got a few nasty rumors surrounding him, most specifically about him being a hermit-fae from his late mother, please don't trust them!
One can never guess what kind of child Kiril is, especially with that sharp tounge of his. They always speak their mind, that's the truth but Kiril knows how to put it in a way so that they don't feel hurt. Maybe that's a reason why he's known for being 'symphathetic.'
But if anything,, Kiril is unreadable to most.
Know too well about others, less than put it into play, that doesn't sound like something a kid will do, yes? You can thank his step-mother for this, even when he was the victim of it too.
Kiril is also known for holding a grudge scarily well, although he doesn't show it. To him, one borrow something must pay it back.
And everyone in his family, is in debt with the silenced dead.

"Come on wake up, broken fairground. For on this briefly gorgeous world, there won't be anytime to say 'Goodbye.' Farewell, Winding-Up Bells of The End."
↳The user is capable of using other Unique Magics from the dead. When using this ability, they will experience what the dead have to go through before their death so that they can use their Signature Spell. Overblots and other phenomeons are considered 'Invitation of Death.' so the user can also use the Overblot person's magic.
†•°•══════ஓ๑✬๑ஓ══════•°•†
↳Backstory:...?
↳Main Theme: Chururira Chururira Daddadda!_ KurageP • Mind Brand_Maretu
↳Kiril doesn't really likes his name, 'Blackthorn' much. But he decides to go for it, since he's too lazy to change it.
↳He gets along very well with the Ramshackle's Marionette, Amaterasu! Kiril often teaches them the concept of human emotions, which they hold greatly in their heart.
↳Is around Lilia Vanrouge's age.
↳May or may not used to be in the old Class 1-A of Night Raven College 300 years ago. Although he doesn't hide it really, but it seems he has relations toward 'The Limitation.'
↳Due to personal reasons, Kiril has dropped out during their second years. It was also the year he turned into an undead until this day.
↳No one ever known this, but Kiril has appeared in the local Twisted Wonderland newapaper. Just under a new identity.
↳Kiril claims to be the Corpse Seeker because of the curse the victim has put on his House. Well, isn't that ironic considered he was the victim?

ぜんまい仕掛けの子守唄 -Album-
Clockwork Lullaby album booklet content
Intro
.
From: TALOS
Date sent: Year 1001, August 10th,03:00
To: Kiril Clockworker
Subject: A final email
.
Hey, we haven't written in a while, huh?
Are you doing well?
.
The Third Period is all finished.
The world has been saved.
Though perhaps it wasn't in the form of the salvation you had hoped for.
.
You didn't complete all twelve music boxes in time, it seems…
But ah well, you needn't fret over that.
You've completed your goal for the time being, after all.
.
The spirits have already begun to migrate to the new world.
Though I hear there are still some remaining in the Third Period as they are yet.
If you have anyone you want to go see, I recommend you take care of that in good season.
.
The gate is open.
You should decide for yourself what you want to do after this.
You can stay in Angolmois as is, or you can deepen your friendship with your old cronies in the Third Period's ruins.
Or…I won't stop you from traveling to the Fourth Period.
I no longer have the right to.
.
You are free.
Though it's possible we will never meet again…Well, as there's no more need for you to keep making music boxes, you may do whatever you wish after this.
Be merry with your wife, hm?
.
Well then, farewell.
I wish you two the best wherever you go.
.
Songs
.
Clockwork Lullaby 01/Clockwork Lullaby -Key Of Word-
.
Origin
<Turns clockwise>
.
The first music box has commenced operation without a hitch.
After turning the windup key it plays a somewhat stiff tune
And at the same time fulfills the purpose of turning a gear of karma
To me the tune it plays is something I don't quite understand,
However I am sure that this is to be the start.
.
Alice's prophecy.
I must ascertain the truth of that.
.
For that is the mission for my atonement that was assigned to me.
.
Clockwork Lullaby 02/Girl of the Miniature Garden
.
Little sister
<Turns counter-clockwise--connected by 01>
.
I don't have much information.
I needed to start from what was within the scope of my reach.
.
The song of a doll in the distant future.
Making the music box for that was simple.
.
My reasons are clear.
It was because to me,
She was none other than the being closest to me.
.
Irina…
Like me,
You too ended up becoming a castaway of time.
.
The blue spoon…
From this song I was able to faintly sense Adam.
That could perhaps become one of the clues I have to go on.
.
Clockwork Lullaby 03/Re_birthday
.
Black box
<Turns counter-clockwise--connected by 01>
.
What has become essential to completion of the music box
Was contact with a god.
And I ended up succeeding in that much sooner than I expected.
.
TALOS…It seems that he had regarded me as dangerous because of the Leviantan Catastrophe.
But I was able to prepare several counter-measures to outwit that bat.
Because thanks to that catastrophe--
I was able to recover the memories of the "original".
.
In the end, TALOS gave up on trying to control me,
And instead offered his assistance.
.
With that I was able to incorporate a black box system into the music box.
.
And then…as for this song's contents.
I shall keep it a secret yet from TALOS.
.
Because, at any rate,
This boy hasn't even been born yet.
.
Clockwork Lullaby 04/ Heartbeat Clocktower
.
Gear
<Turns clockwise--connected by 02>
.
What sort of person is Adam?
I decided to investigate into the man who was said to be the son of Alice.
.
At the end of it, I knew that Adam was by Irina's side,
But at the same time that brought up a new question.
.
As far as I know, the two of them barely even knew each other.
So then why
Is Adam trying to help Irina?
.
…Right now,
I don't even have the parts to formulate a hypothesis yet.
.
I shall aim for the land of Angolmois.
Though it is a place where even knowing of its existence
Is beyond the paygrade of a normal person…
.
But if you're me, on the other hand.
.
Clockwork Lullaby 05 Chrono Story
.
Dragon
<Turns counter-clockwise--connected by 01>
.
For now, I decided to continue on in my work
From a different angle.
.
And then,
I finally discovered the appearance of the person I love most.
.
A witch conversing with the god of the forest.
That face, her hair, her arms and legs…
It was none other than Elluka.
That was unmistakable.
.
--I quietly shed tears alone.
.
She had undoubtedly died.
And she would never be resurrected.
.
…It was something else.
.
I desperately repressed
An overflowing wrath.
.
Because if I was taken over by it,
I would never finish the twelve music boxes.
.
Clockwork Lullaby 06/Capriccio Farce
.
Unusual Event
<Turns clockwise--connected by 04 through the Alice BB>
.
How many years have passed
Since that catastrophe?
I'd stopped keeping track of time
Long, long ago.
.
Upon arriving in the land of Angolmois,
I was able to proceed with the compactification of
The BB system, which was a long-pending problem, at once.
.
At the same time I was able to supply myself components to make a new music box.
.
…However, this one was error-prone.
.
Due to the insertion of the Alice BB,
The sixth music box has started to play a different tone
Than I had initially expected.
.
--At present there are no particular flaws that stand out in it.
.
But there's no guarantee anywhere
That this song is the truth.
.
Clockwork Lullaby 07/Seven Crimes and Punishments
.
Deadly Sin
<Turns clockwise--connected by 05>
.
I have finally become able to follow history in its sequential order.
.
The beings called demons
And the disorders of the world that the people they contracted with caused.
The answer to Alice's prophecy is surely at the end of all that--
.
I've had it verified that my theory is correct.
.
It's become clear that it will destroy the world
As I thought.
.
In other words…
That means the main cause of all this
Is me.
.
Because after all
I am the one who caused it
To descend to the Third Period
.
Clockwork Lullaby 08/The Song I Heard Somewhere
.
Red cat
<Turns clockwise--connected by 02>
.
I have found the one who will destroy everything.
Next I must find the one who will save it.
.
There are several candidates…
But the most prominent would of course be Irina.
I know well the power that she hides.
.
Maybe I could be able to communicate somehow
With the "original" who saved Irina from the brink of death.
.
…Someone is knocking on the door of my house.
.
But, there shouldn't be anyone outside of me who can reach Angolmois.
.
--Who the hell is that?
.
While holding my gun in hand,
I slowly opened the door--
.
Clockwork Lullaby 09/Swear an Oath on that Bridge
.
Salvation
<Turns clockwise--connected by 05>
.
…Ah, god.
This may be the first time that I have been grateful to TALOS from the heart.
Now I have become able to listen to the ninth song with a tranquil heart.
.
And--
While this may be a crazy thought--
I have come to think this way.
.
That while "it" is undoubtedly the destroyer…
If she were able to regain her heart as a "person"
.
Might she at the same time
Have been able to be a savior?
.
When I asked the opinion of she standing by my side, she gave me a small smile,
And nodded.
.
Clockwork Lullaby 10/Banica Concerto!!
.
Gluttony
<Turns counter-clockwise--connected by both 06 and 07>
<Connects further to the big gear through the Seth BB>
.
Finally I succeeded in getting one of the large gears to rotate.
But…frankly…
I'm a little stunned.
To think, that evil food eater would become a savior.
What sort of face will TALOS make when he learns that?
I'd like to see.
.
Naturally this is also thanks to the BB that my wife had been looking after from the "original"--
But it seems the BB's usage invites an unexpected state of affairs after all.
.
The rotation of the large gear
Ended up going opposite to what I'd assumed it would.
.
With this, it can't be called true salvation.
The new world will just end up becoming
A different take on the Third Period.
.
Clockwork Lullaby 11/The Karma of Evil Will Not End
.
Samsara
<Turns counter-clockwise--connects by 08>
<And to the big gear>
.
Adam had a realization.
On the truth that Irina was his mother.
Thanks to the "Re_Birthday" time wound back.
And so Irina will once more become Adam's…
And Eve's mother.
.
I can only hope.
That Irina will sever the karma of evil,
And bring about true salvation.
.
--Ah…
This isn't sufficient.
The gear's power is not enough.
With this the karma of evil will not end.
It'll just repeat the same things again.
.
And now, in that world…
There are no gods.
.
Everything will probably be reduced
To a farce.
.
Clockwork Lullaby 12/Song of the Third Period
.
Graduation
<Turns counter-clockwise--connects by 09 and 03 through the Sickle BB>
<And to the big gear>
.
The singing voices of the Third Period have even reached the land of Angolmois.
This unfinished twelfth music box has begun to move and turn the large gear on its own.
Right now I'm reclining in a chair in an exhausted state.
…There had never been any need to make such things as this.
Even without the music boxes people are able to play the songs.
That is what this means.
.
These people singing…"VOCALOID", huh?
Ah well.
As a musical accompaniment,
It may serve as some aid to them.
For that purpose,
I shall set about making the final music box.
.
Final…
Is that truly so?
I took out my pocket watch
And looked upon its surface.
.
…!
.
I see…So that's it!!
.
Outro

.
TALOS.
You are a liar.
.
Certainly, on the face of a clock there are only 12 numbers written.
But in time…
.
The total number of songs is not 12.
Is that not so?
.
I've decided to head out from Angolmois.
With my wife, of course.
.
As for where I'm heading…I'll leave it to your imagination.
Perhaps I'll see you again once more there.
.
I don't have an exact goal in mind.
But…as long as songs exist there--
.
I will continue to make music boxes.
.
Well then, until we meet again.

Broken Part 1
Summary: Iceland must live with North and South Italy. He quickly grows comfortable with one, only to lose the nation in under a year of being together.
So, here is the first part of this story. Broken is a two-part story based on a Vocaloid song called Error.
What had he done wrong? Everything hurt... Why is he alone?
He can't be gone... He promised me we'd start the next year together... That I wouldn't have to feel so alone anymore... Damn it! It hurts... Why did you go? I miss you... I love you so much...
"Sorry... We couldn't help you at all..." his brother sounded far away, though they were sitting right next to each other. Blue eyes looked at him in sorrow. The man's words echoed in his mind, even as he gave a rare smile to the other. "Lukas," he began with a sigh, "I know you did your best. Look on the bright side. Russia isn't the one I'll be living with." His voice was soft, almost a whisper. His violet eyes shone with resignation and relief.
He would worry if someone like Russia had agreed to take him in, no matter how short a time it must be.
He combed his right hand through his short light blond hair, a gesture he picked up from one of his soon to be bosses. "You're right. At least we know they would never abuse their authority..." his brother replied, hands gently tugging at short blonde hair. "Emil..." They looked to the doorway where the rest of their family stood.
" Time to go..." the oldest announced, blue green eyes looking solemnly at the wall beside them. "We'll miss you... But I'm sure they would let us visit and chat with you. Calls would probably be fine, too..." he added, his short blond hair fluttering as he nodded to himself.
"Berwald's right!" the man beside him cheered, violet eyes shining with unshed tears. "I know for a fact that they would never want you to feel restrained! Right, Matthias?" he put a white hat on his blond hair as he announced this.
"Hehe~ That's right, Tino! We don't have to worry at all!" the speaker's blue eyes seemed to disagree with his words. He closed them as he said, "They're nice! Really nice!" his left hand combed through tussled blond hair as he said this.
"Thanks guys..." Emil gave them a soft, genuine smile.
They arrived at the airport not an hour later, each exuding an air of sadness. They had opted to be less formal and more casual today.
Berwald was the first to get off the car. He straightened his blue shirt and dusted his pale brown pants before helping Tino out. The latter gave a grateful look, making sure his green shirt wasn't wrinkled. He felt his phone vibrate within the pocket of his white pants and pulled it out.
Matthias stepped out not a moment later, his hands hiding in the pockets of his black pants. Berwald huffed at his appearance, before deliberately straightening the man's deep blue shirt. Lukas hesitantly got off the car, as well. He pulled his white jacket tighter to his person before his left hand took something out of the pocket of his black pants.
Emil immediately began to walk into the airport, albeit slowly. He straightened his white dress shirt as he walked. Lukas followed his brother into the airport, the others walking behind him. Emil searched for something in the pocket of his black pants before looking to Matthias. Violet eyes bore into the man's own.
"You took my ticket."
The statement was spoken in a factual manner. Matthias cringed at the bluntness of his surrogate brother, before raising his hands in defeat. "You seriously took his ticket?!" Tino was quick to reprimand him. "Haven't we established that we can still stay connected with each other?! Why would you do this?!"
The accused simply gave a nervous laugh.
Matthias pulled the ticket from the pocket of his pants. "I just feel like... everything's... going to change now... our pace of living and... and..." seeing the usually happy man crying set off even more tears.
Emil felt touched that his family cared this much for him. He could not stop the words any longer. "I'll miss you..." his voice wavered as he began, "I promise to call you... at least once every day... and we can even... have video calls... and we'll chat... as often as possible and... and..." Emil found that he could no longer speak after that.
All he could do was cry as Lukas held him tightly. The others were quick to join in on the session.
They rarely hugged each other, and it was now ever more important for Emil to know that they loved him. That they will always love him.
"I have to go now..." Emil's voice was hoarse from crying. Berwald reluctantly pulled himself and Tino out of the group hug. Matthias moved slowly, as if savoring the moment. It took a few more minutes and coaxing from the others before Lukas detached himself from his brother.
Emil made his way to the boarding gate, all the while thinking of how this would end.
As the plane began to take off, Emil saw his family giving him each of their own farewells.
"...Thank you for flying with Icelandair*. We hope you enjoy your stay." Emil groggily stood as the announcement ended. He made his way through the crowds, mindful not to hit anyone in his sleepy state. He reached the luggage area without trouble.
"Welcome to Milan, Italy!" the woman at the counter spoke in Italian before giving him a look. "Hey cutie~ got any plans?" Emil couldn't really understand her that much so he decided to move on, giving her an apologetic look as he proceeded to the doors.
He did not know what he was expecting to happen, but the following scenario did not even cross his mind. As soon as he stepped outside, he heard a somewhat familiar voice call out to him.
"Ciao~ Over here!" it wasn't hard to find the one who shouted, especially since they spoke in English. He walked over to a pair of young men, standing just a few steps away from a Lamborgini. The one who shouted was waving at him, brown shirt scrunching up at the gesture.
The man's smile was contagious, it seemed, for Emil soon found himself smiling as well.
"How was your flight? I hope the personnel were all nice! If you want, we can take a tour of the city first! It's only twelve in the afternoon! Oh, wait! You must be tired! Let's hurry back to our place so you can rest." The barrage of questions confused him.
The man's usually closed eyes were open, gentle brown eyes locking with shocked violet. "Ve~ Sorry... I tend to ramble a lot. Ludwig's mentioned it before... Kiku doesn't seem to mind, though... Lovi, too, right? Oh! Do you like art? We have lots of places full of art, right, brother?" the man's left hand pulled something from the pocket of his black pants. "Here you go~"
Emil stared at the bar of chocolate being offered to him. "I can't give you pasta right now, sorry..." Emil doesn't know why, but he really wants to comb his fingers through the man's brown hair. "We could go see some art galleries, right? Maybe go to a diner?" The man had turned to his right to address his brother. Emil felt dizzy. "Ah... I'm a bit tired..." and he was.
Being on the plane for four hours and seventeen minutes can do that to a person and nation.
"Where will I be staying?"
"You're staying at our place, stupid! Hurry up so we can leave already!" the one who spoke looked at him, hazel eyes glaring. Emil blinked at the man, who only crossed his arms over his chest. He wasn't that fluent in Italian, but he was sure the other had insulted him.
"Ve~ Brother! Don't be mean! Let's go back now, yes?" the cheery man held Emil's hand in his own, gently pulling him to the car. The brother was quick to gather Emil's luggage and put them in the trunk. He tried to stay awake but as soon as he sat, Emil began to drift into sleep.
"Ve~ you must really be tired..."
The moment the sun broke through the horizon, he was already up and moving. By the time the clock stroke eight, the heavenly scent of food filled the large house. This was how his brothers woke up.
"Feliciano?!" the surprised exclamation echoed in the otherwise silent house. "Good morning, Lovino! Good morning, Marcello! We're having Capelli d'angelo* for breakfast today~" the sound of their brother's light, happy voice caused them to stop and wonder.
"Ve~ I wonder if he'd like to sample some of my pasta dishes... Maybe art galleries? Lovi, Marci... Where should I take him to?"
The addressed simply blinked at their brother's state.
He was fussing over their soon to be new friend while making breakfast.
"Big brother Feli... Let me finish breakfast. You and big brother Lovi need to get ready for when he arrives, yes?" the youngest of the three stated in a serious manner before walking over to the stove. The oldest clicked his tongue.
"Chigi! Why are you even fussing this much, Feli? He probably wants to hurry and go home!"
"Ve~ but Lovi~ I want him to enjoy his stay here! Besides... This might be the only chance I get..."
Lovino's hazel eyes widened at the last part. He sighed, going upstairs to prepare for the day. Marcello's own green eyes looked at Feliciano in question. Feliciano sighed, right hand clutching at his chest. "Ve~ I want to get to know him more... before I fade away..."
The words hurt too much to hear, let alone to believe.
All three of them knew, with Venice sinking, that the personification of North Italy would vanish as well.
However, none of them wished to accept the fact.
Lovino chose to wear a pair of black pants, which went well with his dark brown shirt. His hazel eyes narrowed as his thoughts ran around in circles. This is a curse! A curse, I say! He continued to repeat the mantra until he was fully clothed and waiting by the car. He won't vanish... not for a long while... so why worry?
Except... all three of them knew it...
He still has time... he can still love and be loved... Damn it!
"Ve? Lovi...? What's wrong?" the words of his precious baby brother seemed to strike a chord into his heart. "Nothing's wrong! Damn it!" Lovino hastily got into the driver's seat and waited for the other to get in the car. Nothing's wrong. You're safe and not dying... Idiot! Don't cry in front of him!
The drive to the airport was sullen, with Feliciano trying his best to lighten the mood.
Ve~ I wonder if he'll enjoy his stay here... I hope he does! We can finally spend time together now, ve~ His thoughts strayed from his brother's apparent negativity towards their incoming housemate. I wonder if he likes sweets... I could make him tiramisú* later~
Iceland Air is an airline that travels from Reykjavik, Iceland to a select few cities in Italy.
Capelli d'angelo is a type of Italian pasta.
Tiramisú is an Italian dessert.

Goodbye to a World
I’m standing on the most sacred ground in American music history. In 2015 Bethel Woods, the site of the first Woodstock Fest, has been transformed into Mysteryland, a multisensory cultural experience for a new generation of starry-eyed electro lovers. Between two hundred-foot-high rainbow-painted horse heads Porter Robinson is concentrating on the instruments before him where DJ decks had been stationed all weekend. My face is drenched in the effervescent glow of the stage lights and suddenly I’m thinking, “Fuck, it’s happening again.” My nose tingles as I recognize the delicate melody that gradually swells into a triumphant wall of sound. The bastard has me tearing up for the second time this set. When the towering euphony reduces to four crooned lines, I’m crying.
We’ll see creation come undone
These bones that bound us will be gone
We’ll stir our spirits ‘til we’re one
Then soft as shadows we’ll become
The lyrics don’t conjure any particular memory or evoke any particular emotion, but rather elicit the response of experiencing vivid beauty. “Sea of Voices” was Porter Robinson’s homecoming announcement, telling the world that the year-long hiatus, his recession to his parents’ home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was over. (Robinson, 2014)
Porter Robinson’s ascension to EDM superstardom was more a series of snatched opportunities than a pursuit. A 12-year-old recluse fascinated by role-playing and rhythm video games, he began trying to re-create his favorite 8-bit tunes on a pirated copy of Sony’s ACID software. By posting his unripe productions on Internet forums he found a mentor in vet producer Kyrandian, who pushed Porter until out popped a Beatport number one. “Say My Name” was a bona fide electro house banger, and at 16, Porter was instantaneously inundated with requests to DJ parties around the country. DJ culture was totally foreign to the small-city Carolina boy and clubs were uncharted territory until he started performing in them. One year later he wrangled Ultra Music Fest, South by Southwest, and three Electric Daisy Carnivals on his first headlining EP tour. One year after that, he charted Billboard. (in Fusilli, 2012)
Oblivious to the dominating Dutch house sound of the first wave of the EDM takeover, Porter’s 2010 to 2011 singles were influenced by the music that raised him: chiptune, trance, IDM (intelligent dance music) and Japanese electro hyperpop from the interactive video game Dance Dance Revolution. The result was a moderately eclectic soundboard within the typical 128-BPM four-on-the-floor electro house format, which he coined “complextro.” It was a style defined by its lack of definition and an emphasis on detail, which Porter thought characterized the work of some of his biggest inspirations, Wolfgang Gartner, DirtyLoud, and Skrillex. Porter prematurely enlisted himself as another purveyor of complextro while these early singles—though inspired by several genres—still fit snugly into the electro house casing. (in Fusilli, 2012) That is, until he wrote “Language.” With its trance breakdowns, glitched-out buildups, and an ambient vocal interlude between progressive house drops, it defied the structural and tonal conventions of electro house. Finally, Porter had fulfilled his own prophecy. He was a complextro artist. The summer of 2012 it was impossible to avoid “Language” at any major festival. If you knew at this point what the letters E-D-M stood for, you knew Porter Robinson’s name.
It’s the all-American name of the fresh new face of the American dream, although as far as faces go, our 19-year-old protagonist hasn’t quite grown into his yet. Porter sits opposite his Billboard interviewer at Coachella, a tan, tattooed human stamp of the word “bro.” In the same frame, Porter’s skin appears blanched and his shoulders permanently hunched over from years of living behind the blue light of a computer screen. His upper lip is shadowed by sweat and baby hairs. As Porter recites responses about his age and influences, he absentmindedly slackens his mic hand so the audio feed fades in and out. Once Billboard Bro has filled his question quota, he flashes a farewell smile at the camera. Porter is sheepishly thanking the camera he thinks has been filming him this whole time, and you have to wonder if socializing is something he ever enjoys. (Brooks, 2012)
In between “Say My Name” and “Language” Porter Robinson made a crucial decision. With Gesaffelstein and Brodinski added to his roster of idols in 2011, he flirted with the idea of making a sharp left turn into tech house, a hybrid of mechanical techno percussion and groove-infused house. (Brooks, 2012)(in easylove Records, 2010) After all, his proclaimed main objective at the time was to “maximize energy and write a song that was perfect for the dance floor,” an idea he traversed in the 2011 Spitfire EP with two dubstep tracks and the crassly aggressive moombahton number “100% In the Bitch.” (in Fusilli, 2012) But something was missing. The constraints of music that functions solely to energize the body left him yearning for a sound that would satisfy the soul. Goodbye tech house, hello emotional introspection. The uplifting and anthemic “Language,” his first true complextro track, was also his first artistic expression of sincerity. Its chart-topping success was all Porter needed to start a new chapter of his career: the decision for beauty.
“Easy” was the confirmation that the Porter we knew, booty-shake-maker big-beat-banger Porter, was never coming back. A collab with fellow touring producer Mat Zo, “Easy” one-upped “Language” in emotionally uplifting power. By connecting with his fans on a deeper, more personal level, it seemed Porter had unearthed his true identity as an artist over entertainer. He was gaining momentum. And then he disappeared.
The decision to abandon the DJ culture that nurtured him peaked in late 2012 when he was touring with Mat Zo, “Easy” in development. “I remember being in the back of my tour bus, and we were all just listening to our favorite music and sharing tracks, and we did that for an hour, and there was not a single dance record that any of us wanted to play for each other.” (in Knaggs, 2014) EDM was losing its appeal. Porter was becoming fed up with the creative limitations of dance music as functional entertainment, the hackneyed structure that builds and releases for the sole purpose of partying. The fear of creative stagnation, which he frequently refers to as “the enemy” in interviews, prompted a retreat to Chapel Hill. “I’m going to go back and listen to every album that inspired me and figure out what it is that I loved about that stuff, and try to channel this all into something that’s really me.” (Robinson, 2014) No interviews, no tours—he dissolved back into the Internet so that the only time we saw his face was in hieroglyphics, 【=◈︿◈=】. If Porter hadn’t withdrawn at his peak, we might’ve lost interest in that year of Soundcloud inactivity and festival absence. But we didn’t. We were hungrily awaiting the big reveal.
Worlds was Porter Robinson’s dissent from EDM, but it materialized less as a middle finger than a hug. It wasn’t 21-year-old Porter who emerged from the blue light portal of his parents’ basement, it was 12-year-old Porter, the boy consumed by the various universes of massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). (in Knaggs, 2014) Porter constructed Worlds as a universe with different doors, where you could enter Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Diablo, Mario 64 or World of Warcraft, enter the fictional fantasy that he’d been living while “Say My Name” was still in the making. He forged a sonic trip down memory lane to the “cheesy 2000-era pop rock,” the late-90s/early-2000s video game chiptunes trapped in 8 bits, and the Japanese media that defined his childhood. To effectively and obviously reference this era in Worlds he went straight to the source, plucking out presets from General MIDI and SoundFonts, programs created in the 80s and 90s to facilitate seamless transitions from recorded to synthesized audio. (Robinson, 2014) “Most people would hear those and they wouldn’t think that it sounds retro, they would just think that it sounds bad. But for me, that’s moving the nostalgia forward.” (Robinson, 2014) This conglomerate of “retro” and contemporary synthesized sounds gives the album a timeless quality. Stadium-sized snare hits à la Phil Collins dance with unfamiliar modernity through advanced glitching effects. Every human voice on the album—including the many guest artists—is processed with an ethereal futurism. The album’s keyword was ‘escapism,’ the medium a projection of our imaginations. (Robinson, 2014)
In contrast to the discordant hues of the spitfire album cover, Worlds displays pastel softness. Deviating from the rapid-fire 128 to 140 BPM pace of Spitfire. Worlds hovers mostly around 90. Although 128 BPM rhythms do occur, they project a refined delicacy, as in the case of “Sea of Voices,” which actually feels like it floats through 32 BPM. If you were looking for a dance floor banger, Worlds was not the place to look. Crowds wouldn’t jump up and down at his shows anymore, but pulse the air with their outstretched hands, embracing each other affectionately and swaying in sensual undulations.
“Sad Machine” emerged as the immediate hit. An infectious opening hook carries the intro into Porter’s most singable verse yet. It’s a wistful post-apocalyptic duet between Porter and Avanna, a female character from a Japanese singing synthesis platform called Vocaloid. (Robinson, 2014) Boy meets robot. Boy and robot comfort each other in the wake of the end of the world. Porter embraced the role of vocalist out of necessity as the album’s due date rushed up, his vulnerable rawness as a singer contrasting with his computerized counterpart. (Robinson, 2014) His reference to Avanna in interviews as “she” and “her” is more endearing, rather than disturbing or pathetic, and he could care less that some label him an internet-certified pussy. “The best hate tweet I ever got was ‘hey loser go hang out with your imaginary robot girl’ I was like hell yes this dude gets it.” (twitter.com) K-k-k-kawaii, Porter!
Avanna resurfaces in tracks like “Fresh Static Snow” and “Goodbye to a World,” though not in the most Japanese of all, “Flicker.” In her place, a text-to-speech program spits out a nonsensical, whimsical rap of seamlessly chopped up and reconnected album titles translated to Japanese, albums like Daft Punk’s Discovery, his all time favorite. (Robinson, 2014) This is one more example of how Porter cleverly repurposes his sources of musical inspiration directly into the product. “Flicker” is an ode to the Japanese ideal of the appreciation of beauty and color. He searches for the recreation of this ideal he’s absorbed from the timbre of Japanese video games through pensive breakdowns that bloom into optimistic chord progressions.
The most literal representation of Porter Robinson’s resignation from aggressively beat-driven EDM is “Fellow Feeling,” where a weeping violin multiplies into a mournful symphony worthy of a blockbuster soundtrack. The first two minutes of this elegant lament recall the piece Porter has claimed to be “the most beautiful song [he’s] ever heard,” the orchestral version of “Serenity” by Afternova, an expansion on a trance beat, within which also lurks the melody of “Language” and the movement of “Sea of Voices.” (in Harper, 2011) “Fellow Feeling” is conducted by a girl’s whispered narrative filled first with regret, then optimism.
I cried, for I didn’t think it could be true
That you and I might’ve always known one another
And that we could not only evoke,
But conjure a place of our own
And that everywhere that has ever existed
It was all in service for our dream
Now, please, hear what I hear
A chugging techno monster abruptly infiltrates the symphony, assaulting the vulnerability of the strings with mechanical grime.
Let me explain
This ugliness, this cruelty, this repulsiveness
It will all die out
And, now, I cry for all that is beautiful
This duel between the two conflicting aesthetics then morphs into a hard-hitting complextro beat guided by a driving side-chained kick drum. To Porter, this was the easiest way to declare his separation from the perfunctory functionality of dance music. The hybrid house climax at the end, though, references “Language” and “Easy” to make clear that mellifluous music at 128 BPM is still a possibility.
If you visit Porter Robinson’s Soundcloud page you will find it cleansed of the “ugliness” and “repulsiveness” to which he refers in “Fellow Feeling.” Missing are his moombahton and dubstep releases, the faux-complextro pre-“Language” singles, and the bass-heavy Spitfire remixes. The density and grit of these tracks cannot, in his mind, coexist with his newly refined artistry. I wonder if Porter can even listen to “100% In the Bitch” now without cringing at its vulgarity. As for Soundcloud’s music discovery function, he spends at least an hour daily searching the server for new ideas rather than “crazy production prowess.” Rejecting the negative connotation of the word ‘novelty,’ he embraces its implication of distinctiveness. “When I hear something that I’ve never heard before, I love that feeling, and I think that’s one of the greatest things about electronic music.” (Robinson, 2014)
The conception of the Worlds tour was as immense an effort as the album itself. Porter handed everyone in his art department a 20-page document with explicit instructions on the visual concept. Surrealism based on glitch and role-playing video games rather than trippy drug-inspired imagery was the goal. (Robinson, 2014) The outcome was a multi-screen cinematic journey through flashes of vibrant and prismatic glitches and Japanese calligraphy, skies of floating islands, pixilated flower fields, molten orbs, and the familiar forests we experience vicariously through recurring anime characters that leap, fly and fall through Porter’s low-poly imagination. Full immersion in his vision is essential, so he performs only original compositions edited for the sake of novelty, triggering samples on drum pads, playing dominant melodies on keys, and singing wherever possible. He defies the odds against a single DJ possessing so much virtuosic musicality. Inevitably, the experience begs the emotional participation of his audiences, which is guided by narrations, the most memorable of which is the following:
Every place you’ve ever imagined
It’s real
There is a fictional city in your
mind and you know every corner of it
Your mind is a world
Each of us is a place
This shit really takes you on a feel trip.
The conclusion of the album and the live show is Avanna’s swan song, “Goodbye to a World.” In the most heartbreaking instance of the overarching apocalyptic theme of Worlds, Avanna devolves literal bit by bit into her monotone death. The fragility that leads to worlds’ destruction references the MMPORGs so significant to Porter which, “once the company goes under, or the game is no longer profitable...these worlds are completely inaccessible. They basically just die.” (in Knaggs, 2014) I imagine young Porter’s eyes welling with tears as the server shuts down and he is forcibly returned to reality. “Worlds doesn’t really have a place in reality,” he tells us. (in Knaggs, 2014) As he grapples with the imminence of adulthood, he preserves a child-like fantasy. It’s a vessel of fiction and escapism, which is really the guiding spirit of EDM as a whole, though Worlds has liberated Porter from the shackles of the conventionally vapid modes of this ideology. As he noticed EDM curating its own obsolescence, he mapped out his immortality in an alternate universe with an open invitation and warm welcome for those of us who wish to join him.

anywaaaaaays ヽ・ω・*/ノ
1. When and how did you get into j-rock?
jokesss it was animu as usual ahahahaa I was already listening to J-pop at the time like Arashi and Yuki Kajiura I also liked Perfume by that point too, around.. 2012..? somewhere around there ;w; I was 13 years old.
I actually can't remember who my first J-rock band I ever heard was ;;u ; I listened to a lot of anime intros and found a couple of artists from there.... the first J-rock song I ever heard was probably SID's Monochrome no Kissu huhuhu but I didn't actually listen to SID after that..... ting is is that I was painfully weeby at the time, the typically cringey child that would more listen to ... random american pop songs that I found on amvs, and all the classics like cascada's everytime we touch and the 'numa numa song' ,,...... //////v/// and I listened to a LOT of Vocaloid, all of it, I was obcessed, it’s literally all I would listen to for a year or so ノω`*)ノ I also found a finnish rock band called Indica through an amv and even bought one of their albums ;u; my music taste was a crazy mix of stuff I'd just found on Youtube really... I loved The Midnight Beast (reppin from uk) and I still do, Lemon Demon too.... and I downloaded official soundtracks from anime like Pandora Hearts and D.Gray Man and listened to those as well. I was also a big fan of Yugioh the abridged series and would listen to yugioh song parodies LittleKuriboh made ;; u ;
Only a small part of my music library was J-rock and J-pop at the time... but I think the first band that caught my attention was Buck-Tick, after I watched the anime xxxHolic somewhere in 2012. Then after watching Shiki a little later I recognised the same voice and looked kuchizuke up and was jammin, and for some reason I watched an interview with Aachan before getting distracted by that one video that everyone has seen of T.M singing dress with him, and listening to ABS instead because I knew them from the theme song to D.Gray man ///u// it was only until summer 2013 until I really found out who Buck-Tick actually was, I listened to as many singles as I could find and I fell in love with them in less than 24 hours hehe ´。• ᵕ •。` I actually didn't like rock music at all before then, b-t were the group that introduced me to being a rock music fan even though I still didn't like heavier sounds, like Gazette that my friend was into. Sometime later that year I listened to L'arc en Ciel for the first time too, I think I read about them in a magazine or something.. I can't remember //w// ((I bought the 'stay away' single at may mcm in 2014, my first J-rock cd :3c)) I still listened to a lot of J-pop during 2013 and Arashi had begun to dominate my life, so I didn't really get properly into J-rock and visual kei until early 2014 when I started listening to ancafe, because I'd heard of them from cosplayers on deviantart who had them in their ID section under music interests, and then subsequently finding out they were touring in europe :3c I was more partial to oshare and lighter pop-punk things around that time.. early days was LM.C and Alice Nine and Royz after that....
Kind of a long and patchy story (wow it’s really long why did I write so much I’m so sorry it’s so boring) but there isn't necessarily an exact moment I started listening to J-rock... only in the last year or so have I let Vkei fully consume my life so... back then it was only a side interest for me among all the other things ˊ꒳ˋ from 2014 onwards I just found more and more bands as well as listening to a lot of johnny's and J-pop stuffs... >w> and the rest is historyyyy
2. List your current most favorite band(s).
bakuchikuuuuu forever and ever every moment of my waking life alwaysss till I dieeee //w/// and Dog in the PWO >:3 two very contrasting groups to say the leest but I have a wide breadth of faves hehe ;;w; I fell in love with Doggu super quickly and have been following them ever since, I've known them for a year now and they are 100% in my top 5 favourite bands ever ;u ; dems are my two main faves as it is right now but there are too many others to list that I have a lot of feelings for /;;w;//
Currently I also like listening to Hakujitsu no Yume... Pentagon are my children.... Piglow in Gloomy are really amazing also ;w;;
3. How many j-rock concerts have you been to? (If you haven’t been to any, which band would you like to see the most in the future?)
not many becos I am a baby and I have never travelled out of my home country to raibus ;;v; my first ever was Ancafe in 2014, when I was a weeby mess, and most recently Versailles in January 2017 :3c inbetween I’ve seen VAMPS (and alexandros) at a shared live @ ‘Japan Night’ which was a lil concert organised by HyperJapan, a convention here in uk ..can I count bands that I’ve seen at Hyper too..? ;;w; I’ll just count Vaniru because they were aight while Yuto and Leoniel lasted as a couple heheh >w>> and I also went to SuG’s raibu in 2015~
so that makes 6 i guess.. I am a bebe ;;
//come on Merry where u at with this europe tour??//
there are so so so many bands I wanna see live, and I would go to a couple more lives in London here and there but I always get attached to groups that are very Japan-based and that are very unlikely to make any overseas appearances ;v; and I don’t wanna spend a lot of monies on bands that I don’t know as well that occasionally visit //3///
4. Which j-rock band do you think is the most underrated?
Daizystripper o´ω`o They used to be a more popular with western peeps but I think a lot of people stopped listening to them a while ago an might not even realise that they're still active and tings ;; v; their debut with Victor might make it a little difficult for international fans though eheh but I wish they still had the support they seemed to have~ so many good jams ; u ;
And everyone from Planet Child Music records needs more recognition and to be invited to more events ///u//
5. Which j-rock band do you think is the most overrated?
If I had to I'd say Vamps hhhhuu I thought that they were v good up until recently ;;w; I dunno I feel like the couple of newer songs have lost their power and originality... and no matter what I'll always think L'arc are infinitely better but some people think not //vv/// Vamps are always over here and in other countries too, whereas L'arc I feel are neglected a lot with world tours and overseas promotion and stuff when they deserve more love than vamps ;3; I mean.. 25 years going strong //u/ why dis Hyde come back to uk without vamps this time hhhh
6. Who is your ultimate bias in j-rock? Optionally: Post your most favorite picture(s) of them.
ahhhhh .. Aachan got me from the start ;; ノノ*ФωФ ;;ノノ ノノ
7. What is your most treasured j-rock related memory?
Um.. not that much has happened to me personally that I can really mention hehe >w>
Hizaki calling me cute at Hyper's meet & greet last year was probably the best thing that's acc happened to me ;;;;w;;;;;; It was the end of the day and I looked like a wreck, Hizaki saw me as I came up for cheki and said 'kawaii~' ////w// best memory heckk I mean Hizaki---- being called cute by Hizaki ;;;;;u; why dis I do not deserve (and obvs taking cheki with him was part of that good memory too >w>)
An Cafe was my first live, and I'll always remember that my one of my favourite singles is 'My heart leaps for 'C'' and when they played it after the encore I went insane hehe ;;; u ; that was a treasured moment for me because it was kind of surreal like 'oh wow a band that I love is playing one of my favourite songs is this real??' and ... since I was an hyperactive 15 year-old that moment just made me really excited ;v; I was singing along (horribly) to every lyric and bouncing up and down like crazy and I would not let that feeling go for a while //w/ ah to be young again ~~
But SuG is probably the best raibu memory ever ever. they played a very very small venue in London and it was literally the most intimate thing imaginable, you could touch everyone and Takecchi almost hit his head a few times on the lights above him ;;u; and even though I was in like, three rows of people away from the front, Chiyu's hand grazed mine for a second and that was the most special moment ;;w; Shinpei leaned into the audience for a group hug and Yuji and Chiyu were high-fiving and ruffling people's hair ///;w;/ it was such a long farewell with everyone touching hands and patting heads and it felt so nice and close, I thought we were really lucky to get such an intimate show ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄
8. How do you support and enjoy j-rock the most? Buying CDs? Going to lives? Just full on going to Japan for it?
I buy Cd's if I can for bando that I really love and want to support, and at lives I buy at least one peice of merch every time too :3c and I'm trying to get into a habit of buying Cure if bands I like are featured >u> I accidentally end up following e v e r y o n e on twitter and just scroll thru liking posts if that counts as 'support' ? :'3
9. How does your family feel about this hobby of yours?
My parents don't really mind, I end up showing my mama photos and videos and she understands my hype at everyone I think hehe, and I play cd's often so my parents hear J-rock a lot but don't complain~ we all have our own music collections now it’s so cute 〃▽〃 I talk about J-rock a lot like, I just ramble on mostly to myself because I have no-one else to talk to in the house so ;;u; my parents don't really listen that closely but ye, they don't mind and they're glad I'm into something different I guess :'3c
10.What is the craziest j-rock fandom story that you have?
idk what j-rock 'fandom' story means exactly,,, like, you heard the story from the fandom or the story is about the actual fandom itself..? ;;w; well actually I guess this is both haha this is the only story that I have worth telling and I only heard it a couple weeks ago but ;//u.//
A friend of a friend has connections with Mejibray’s MiA, and he messages her and lots of other peeps I’d imagine as MiA prob does~ and on one occasion MiA was sent a cute little (I say little but) Intimate Image that the 1 and only Yohio took of his peen and decided to share it around so other people could enjoy it obvs >>>ww.>> and he sent it to said friend, nice one >;3ccc thank u for showing me too I feel very privileged, too many bants I was dying ahh ..//www//// why dis MiA why dis......... poor Yohio ;; v; u don’t need to send dick pics to impress your senpai, kids ;; /////; poor little child ;u;;
---yyyyeee I’m so boring das literally all I have apart from the most mediocre things like being jealous of people that get to go to meet&greets and have fun encounters and peeps that actually manage to catch picks at lives etc //u....///
Thank you for reading ♡
#j-rock#visual kei#tag#I really went to town with this#many gomens#u don't have to read it#just scroll past really fast#it's jus a mess of awkward words and kaomoji

Forgiveness, Thankfulness and Remembrance - Chapter 1: Touring the School
FTR on Quotev
FTR on Tumblr Masterlist
Description:
☆EXO OT12 ft. BTS, TWICE and OCs ☆ MinJu (Kim Minseok x Young Eunju), ChanBaek, Kaisoo ☆ Faith Lawson "Young Eunju" is a transfer student to Seoul Global High School after receiving two prestigious Language and Language Arts scholarships. She prepared herself for the culture, but has anxiety because of her weak knees-at her own fault-that make her unable to run or jump. Will Faith enjoy her final high school year?
WE: Assume dialogue is Korean unless specified to be English or Mandarin. And, the flooring plan is fictional, though the actual school is not. There's an actual school schedule for this, take a look!
-❄❄❄ September 6, 2017. 8:09 AM ❄❄❄-
"Have a good day, Eunju." I smile to my host Mom, Jeongna, as I sling my bright blue backpack over my shoulder and open the door a little. "You can always come home if you're not comfortable in the dormitories."
"I will, Mom. Take care."
"You, too." She returns the smile, then I exit the vehicle, booting my black suitcase ahead of me. I close the door behind me and wave to Jeongna as she drives away. Sighing as I prepare myself a little more, I walk towards the front doors and enter the building with some other student. I bow my head in turn of thanks as a male student hold the door open for the small, oncoming crowd, then make my way to the office.
By the office door, I make eye contact with a Korean girl in the school's uniform. She has dark, dark brown hair to her shoulder blades, and eyes like melted sharp chocolate captured in reflective marbles. This is Mun Haeun, a twelfth grader like me who is my STG. I met her yesterday after I moved half of my things into my host family's house because the teacher in charge of the STG Team scheduled for us to meet at one of the many cat cafes at noon to help us get acquainted. STG stands for 'Student Tour Guide', but Haeun told me that students mockingly call it 'Swear To God' because they feel like children.
We became friends after realizing we both cosplay as Vocaloids, sew our own costumes, and have a weird fascination for watching people. She speaks Korean and English, and her parents teach Korean and English at the school. Haeun has no siblings, but her younger cousin, Sinhye, is in tenth grade, here. "Hi, Eunju." Haeun greets me, waving, and I return the gesture, bowing my head a little in respect. "Did you sleep well?"
"I slept well, yes."
"Good, you'll need it. This school is actually that hectic. Let's go to your homeroom." I follow Haeun out of the office down the forward facing hallway, another to my right. "You remember what room number it is, right?"
"Yes, room F-8, which is on the second floor with all the grade 12 lockers." I answer, as we come to the stairs on the left after the Lost-and-Found box in a nook under the stairs with two sets of double doors. When we went over the school's floor plan, yesterday, Haeun told me they're usually closed. A bench, janitor's closet and bathrooms are on the opposite wall, followed by grade 10 lockers and five classes, three of which are on the left. As I begin to rapidly march up the stairs, right foot first, then my left foot joining it, three students pass me. I catch a pair of shirts and one pair of pants as a giggle rolls down the stairs.
"Hey, wait, oppa-yah." The girl who was a bit behind catches my eyes; she's really cute, her face shape is like a doll's, and she has golden brown hair. "Look at her, she looks so stupid. I hope she falls." As she jogs back to join her friends, I look at the other girl.
She's adorable, with big, brown eyes, a stout little chin and caramel brown hair that's dark brown at the roots. The male student, who could accurately be described as a brown haired Mochi, is short and breathtaking in appearance. Haeun sighs as I finish climbing the first set of stairs and move onto my next one. "Really, Dahyun? She has bad knees from an injury two years ago."
"And, I speak Korean well." I slyly add, keeping my eyes on the stairs as I pass them.
"How did you do that?" Dahyun asks.
"One Friday in March, I had too much exercise at school, and I used to walk to and from school. My knees were already buckling from walking on my toes." I lean against the wall after I finish climbing. Haeun, who already knows the story from yesterday, joining me. Dahyun is on her tail, and the other two quietly follow.
"When I got home to help my parents outside, both my knees buckled, which never happened, before. I spent a week at home on crutches, then Sunday, my parents told me to walk five steps from the dining table to the couch." Two male students pass us from ascending the stairs in a hurry. I notice the tallest student grips the other's wrist, whose face is red, and both divert their eyes from our group. "I was too scared and tried going back to my room, but I started off wrong and sat on my good leg, dislocating the knee."
"It took me all summer to walk without assistance, including anxiety pills, because they became a comfort item. I flunked a grade when I tried homeschooling, but I caught up last year in a branch of my old high school. I did go a little crazy, especially after my first boyfriend, who was a psychopath. But, I wrote a book during that time." I lightly huff and smile. "I always wanted to live in a big city like Seoul instead of a small, Canadian town like Vanderhoof, so it was worth it."
"Wow..." The second girl awes.
"I'm... sorry I picked on you." Dahyun says. "You're kind of cool and inspiring. What's your name?"
"My name is Young Eunju. I'm in grade twelve."
"Aw, your name suits you!" She giggles. "I'm Kim Dahyun, and this is my best friend, Joo Jayoo, and my boyfriend, Park Jimin. Jayoo is in tenth grade, I'm in eleventh, and Jimin oppa is in twelfth." She gives a polite bow. "It's nice to meet you."
"It's nice to meet you, too." I reply, bowing back.
"Are you going to homeroom to meet your teacher?" Dahyun asks.
"Yes."
"What room are you in?"
"F-8."
"Ah, you get Mrs. Mok!" Jayoo comments. "She's really nice. If everyone hands their work in at the end of the week, she gives us ice cream!"
"Are you in her class?" I ask.
"Yes!" Jayoo looks among Dahyun and Jimin. "We were heading to the music room down the next hall, a staircase is at the end of this one. The classroom is on the way there. Want to walk with us?"
"Sure!" I nod a little, then Jayoo and I walk practically side-by-side down the hall. Haeun is behind me, and Dahyun and Jimin are behind Jayoo, holding hands. My stomach churns in memory of Halloween during the moment I look. We reach the classroom, and I peer inside to see a Korean woman sitting at a desk facing the left of the room.
Jayoo turns to me with a smile. "Well, here we are. I have P.E first block, Dahyun unnie has Yearbook, and Jimin has Biology, then we all have a double block of Musical Arts. What about you?"
"I have P.E this morning, too." Haeun answers. "Eunju has Apprenticeship and Workplace Math. Then, we have Visual Arts for the double block."
"We could meet outside at the ten minute break between the double block." Jimin quietly suggests.
"Yes, yes." We agree, nodding. I've got a strong impression that Jimin's a Shy Mochi, heh. Lucky Dahyun, he's cute.
"Um, after lunch, I have Media Arts with oppa, and Jayoo has Science." Dahyun says. "Then, for the last block I have Pre-Calculus, Jayoo has Languages, and oppa has Law."
"I have Food Studies, then Pre-Calculus." Haeun says. "Eunju has Theatre Arts Tutoring, then Languages."
"Nice, we'll see each other in several classes." Dahyun replies.
"Do you have Kakaotalk, Eunju and Haeun?" Jayoo asks.
"Yes, we have it." Haeun answers.
"Let's trade numbers, then! Do you want Dahyun unnie's, too?"
"If it's alright with her, yes." Haeun looks to Dahyun, who nods with a gentle smile in response. We trade numbers, then say farewell as the three continue down the hall. Haeun and I enter the classroom, and Mrs. Mok looks up to us from her computer, which seems to be her emails.
"Good morning." She greets us.
"Good morning." We reply, bowing.
"Are you a new student?" Mrs. Mok asks me, making eye contact.
"Yes, my name is Young Eunju. I'm in twelfth grade. I'm from Canada."
"Oh, Canada! How nice!" She smiles. "Welcome to SGHS, I'm Mrs. Mok. Is this your homeroom?" I nod in confirmation. "Good, good. You have some time before the bell rings, so you can go, unless you have some questions."
"Uh, yes." I giggle. "I've been told you give ice cream to the class if they hand their work in?"
"Ah," Mrs. Mok laughs. "Yes, that's true."
"Is it... OK if I turn down the ice cream? I'm lactose intolerant." I laugh nervously under my breath.
Mrs. Mok laughs lightly as she shakes her head. "Of course it's alright. Another of my students is also lactose intolerant, too. Her name is Hwang Hyejae, do you know her?" I shake my head to say no. "Well, you'll meet her today. Maybe you have other things in common." I smile and nod a little in reply. "Are you comfortable giving the class a short greeting speech?"
"Yes, I would be comfortable doing that."
"Alright. I'll call you to the front when it's time, then. You can take a seat in the front, few students sits there." I nod in reply. "Is there anything else you want to ask, Eunju?"
"No, I'm out of questions. Thank you, Mrs. Mok."
"Alright. Let me know if you need anything, OK?" I nod twice in reply. "I'll see you in a little bit."
"Bye." I bow a little, then Haeun and I exit the classroom. She follows me as we continue down the hallway, more students making their appearances. "She's a really nice teacher, wow." Haeun nods in agreement, giving a low 'mhm'.
"Where are we going?" Haeun asks.
"Uh... that's a good question." I laugh a little, then exhale in thought. "How full is the music room, usually?"
"Packed full." I laugh again, and Haeun joins me.
"How about the library?"
"Full, too. But, not as hectic."
"What about the drama room?"
"A little occupied. Actually," Haeun turns to look at me instead of the staircase we proceed to descend from. "You might like it there. The kids there sure are welcoming."
"Cool, then let's go there." After reaching the bottom, we take a left down the science and continued grade 10 hallway. We pass through the opened double doors after another staircase with an empty nook below it to the left. There are double doors, usually locked, leading outside to the left before a wall of lockers, as this hallway has more grade 10 lockers. A door to the large, blocked courtyard is on the right; four classrooms look into it, split between the second and base level.
We take a sharp left-then-right turn on a corner and pass the languages hallway, the opened double doors to the library on the right. The last of the grade 10 lockers line the walls between the two classes, which are on either side of the hallway. Between the one on the right is short hallway that leads to the small auditorium and looks into the library and courtyard. There are bathrooms ahead after two support beams that stand semi-centre in the opening, and a bench is between two sets of locked double doors leading to the staff parking lot. We pass through this, and I glance at the lime green hallway that begins with a gentle ramp.
"The Home Economics classroom is down there, right?" I ask, as we pass a janitor's closet on the right and a nook with a bench on the left.
"Yep. Then, after a right turn, there's doors behind you, the grade 11 hallway ahead of you." Haeun explains, as we pause at the ramp leading into the grade 11 hallway. "The woodwork classroom is on your left in the middle, and more doors are at the end, on the left. The metalwork classroom is on the left, when you turn right, after some lockers. There are two small classrooms on the right usually used for lectures."
"What's behind here?" I ask, tapping the door on the left wall just before the ramp.
"Textbook storage."
"Ah."
"And then, you know the choir and old drama room is down here." Haeun says, pointing ahead to review my knowledge. "It's used for the Dance Club, too. Do you remember where Theater class is, now?"
"The small auditorium, because they use the stage."
"That's right. The Writing and Media Arts classrooms are down the hallway to our right towards the office, on the left. The first door on the right leads to the photocopying room, and the cafeteria with the canteen on the left is open to the hallway right before the small auditorium. There's a dramatic corner before the languages and library hallway to make room for the courtyard. The school's layout is a bit weird around this area."
I giggle and nod in understanding, then Haeun continues. "Across the cafeteria and small auditorium is the gym hallway. A long trophy case is on the left wall, and a small canteen is on the left just before the double gym doors. There's an exit down the right hallway after another trophy case and vending machines. If you ignore the gym hallway, there are bathrooms on your left, and the Careers office is on the right, after the entrance to the canteen and its tiny kitchen, the office on your left, and the main entrance at the end."
"That was a good review, I think I'll remember that even more, now."
Haeun laughs lightly. "Sorry about that."
"Eh, it's OK. We still have..." I pull out my phone from the small pocket of my backpack. "...12 minutes to fool around."
"Shall we go into the old drama room, now?"
"Yes, definitely." We continue down the hallway, and when I look into the giant window that looks into the classroom, I see three male students scream as they chase each other with pool noodles. Another male student and a female student sit on the couch facing into the classroom, and laugh along. Two other boys sit on the floor, another girl by the side of the farthest boy, and they glance up from their phones to laugh as the three run around. I find myself smiling. "Yeah, now I remember why I liked being a drama kid."
"You haven't been in drama class since your knee accident made you paranoid about the floor for a couple weeks, have you?" Haeun asks. I shake my head as an answer, and Haeun smiles with a slight huff. "Well, there's no time like the present."
"Nope." I return the smile, then pull open the rightmost door into the classroom.
-Forgiveness, Thankfulness and Remembrance-
WE: 2500 words exactly, wow. The next chapter will be more exciting, and ho boy will there be ships, drama and gags. Think about the story's title and the first group mentioned in the Description. That is your clue. Thank you for reading!
