of all the people he could have run into, of all the people he could have stumbled across in the crowd --- did it have to be her? did it have to be now? after their conversation, he had spent too much time ( and far too many company resources ) attempting to find out more information about the woman calling herself jessica drew. when that did not work, he had tried putting her entirely out his mind. when even that did not work, he had felt himself slipping into a deep paranoia, the same paranoia that had once come with the mention of spider-man --- distrust, fear, suspicion, suspicion, suspicion. eventually, that too had faded, and he did not know which was worse: the brief certainty that she was there to doom him or the current uncertainty that she might actually be trying to help.
either way, he did not want to see her here. he did not want her to see him like this, like an osborn. ( and that was not fair of him, was it? why should he care what she thinks of him? ) he pulled her to the side of the crowd, eyes scanning the surrounding area for any others who might be watching them.
in a low voice, “are you following me?”

i am beyoncé always.
Kon squinted at the other costumed vigilante and folded his arms. “No, Beyoncé is Beyoncé always. You’re just,” he waved about her over getup and person randomly. “Sorry, what’s your name again?” There were soooo many Spider people around ha couldn’t keet track, and he didn’t have the familial incentive to do so like he did with the bajillion members of the Bat clan. He was fairly sure this one was Sipder-Woman, but could he be sure? Really really sure?

if i can get them depressed, then i’ll have done my job.
Kaldur side-eyed Spider-Woman for that comment, but chose not to reply. There was merit in making criminals rethink their life choices, especially too comfortable scientist with twisted imaginations, but he was fairly certain that that wasn’t what she was going for there. Instead he checked his communicator for the time. “The local law enforcement should be here for them soon. What do you say we do in the meantime?”

do you like whiskey?
THERE’S NO WAY OUT OF THIS BUT TO LIE. ( Lying to a spy, with a poker face somehow hindered even as it is entirely covered. Yeah, this will be convincing. )
“ Of course. Do I look like a fool? ——- I like it nice and aged. And from Scotland, only imports for this guy. ”

There’s an odd sort of comfort to Clint’s place, and it took Steve a few hours to place it. The last time he’d been somewhere THIS QUIET --- well, it’d been back in the war, sitting around with the Howling Commandos. ( He tried not to think how it was a false sense of security then. Talk too loud, you might get shot in the back before you even realized you were in trouble. ) It was quiet like the end of a battlefield.
Really --- it shouldn’t have come as a surprise that he needed a break from it, a time to think. He made his way down to a park a few miles away. It was far enough that he felt comfortable about it but close enough that the others might not even notice he was gone. ( They would notice, but for a moment, he could feel like he might just be able to breathe. )
After a few minutes, he pulled out the device, hit the button she’d shown him. It might not be a good idea to involve SOMEONE ELSE, but --- you had to count on people, right? That was what made them better.
He'd wait there a few hours if he had to. He knew it, sure as stone: Jessica Drew would come.

“ i’ve got a hundred thrown out speeches i almost said to you. ” -- @vnmblast
❝Oh really? That number seems kind of low... tell me Jess, should I be hurt? Perhaps even... MORTIFIED?!❞ Here come the pseudo dramatics, arriving in a storm that thundered from her chest on upwards. She gave a heart-wrenching gasp, her hand flexed and bent over her face as she attempts to hide away all the “pain” piercing through to her face. ❝Oh god! You don’t care about us anymore! You’ve given up! Conceal, don’t feel... don’t let it SHOOOOOOW!❞ She had a mid-stretch of elongated theatrics upon the couch, her leg halfway up in the air before she paused, her face suddenly a picture of bewilderment. ❝Err... wait, is it... don’t let them know? Don’t let it show? ...They both work, right? Right. Ahem, so anyway--❞
There was a very VERY heartfelt attempt to start the chorus to the cursed melody of a bygone age that should have been long forgotten, but she instead collapsed into helpless laughter, hastily reaching up in a tactile move to yank her beloved onto the sofa with her. ❝Jokes aside, you should toss all of your speeches at me, at any time, anywhere. No matter how crazy or justified they are.❞ A dazzling grin seemed at home on her face as she peered up at Jessica Drew who remained on top of her, brushing long hair away from her favorite’s face with a snort. ❝Besides, I think it’s unfair that I dump my unadulterated crazy, and whatever else, on you twenty four seven. Unfiltered too. So please... do return the favor, mmkay? Or else.❞
She retracted her arms, only to curl them behind her head with an arrogance striking her smile. ❝I promise not to fall asleep during most of them.❞

@vnmblast asked: ❝ if you want to rebuild, you have to tear it down first. ❞
A DEMOLITION IS ONLY COMPLETE ONCE THE VERY GROUND A STRUCTURE ONCE OCCUPIED LOOKS UNTOUCHED BY HUMAN HANDS. The same philosophy applies here, when looking at Gotham’s criminal underworld ; raze the forest, let new trees grow.
Or something like that.
❝ See, it’s not so complicated. ❞

┉ ❝ Run that by me again? ❞
┉ Bruce was a genius. It was just people that were difficult, and New York seemed to have the highest rate of difficult people per capita in the world. Example A: the woman who’d fallen in step with him on his way out of the coffee shop, which was just adding insult to injury. Not only was decaf inherently the worst kind of coffee, but he was now being consigned to social interaction without caffeine.
┉ Was he being unfair? Probably. That didn’t mean he was wrong. But it did mean that he felt just guilty enough about it to let the interaction continue, instead of trying to duck into a bookstore or come up with some other excuse.
┉ ❝ Sorry, but do I know you? I don’t mean to be rude. ❞ He did. But it was a fair question, he thought. Especially since there was a niggling thought at the back of his mind that he ought to know who this was, one that made him frown as he tried to catch up to where she was in the conversation, deeply disliking the feeling of being caught on the wrong foot.

THE APARTMENT building isn’t something she hasn’t seen before. Nondescript, extremely NORMAL against the cluttered backdrop of New York City buildings that JUT upward like jagged teeth toward the sky. Either way it’s not entirely surprising, of course, given the amount of INTEL she already has on it and its inhabitants.
Hill navigates the sidewalk like a shark CUTTING through water–– purposeful and driven toward one cause, boots clacking on the sidewalk in her wake and up the stairs on the heels of another resident. Maria doesn’t really have the TIME to dilly-dally, and so she’s knocking at the door a half minute later, giving the peephole a direct stare.
When she’s sure there’s someone behind it, she tips her head a little, flicking her eyebrows.

😭 When was their first breakup?
Literally just a month after he was broken out of CADMUS. Unsurprisingly this is also his only breakup to date, and it was an amicable one with Dr. Tana Moon of Star Labs (at the Kryptonian crash site facility). Their relationship was a really casual one to begin with so there were few hards feelings when Kon left Star Labs and things petered out. The two are still friends and Kon still goes to Tana when he needs relationship advice.

Kaldur stared at Spider-woman on the top of the darkened and empty roof. The building under them belonged to a LexCorp pharmaceutical subsidiary, much like the two CADMUS facilities destroyed before, and it was clear what the both of them were attempting to do here. Here, with all the disabled security feeds. It just an odd coincidence.
“I take it you’re here to investigate LexCorp as well,” Kaldur stated as-a-matter-of-factly as he continued the stare down without a flinch. “It may be more prudent for the both of us to work together this time instead of getting in each other’s way.”

ASIDE FROM GOTHAM, New York is perhaps the only other city in the continental United States whose heroes consider her a stronghold of sorts. It could be due to the monumental number of earth - shattering catastrophes that have taken place within its limits, but vigilantes who operate here tend to default into turf wars real quick. Which is why Nightwing is keeping a low profile, doing his best to stay under the proverbial radar as he tracks a shipment of Fear Toxin gone suspiciously missing from Black Mask’s most recent shipping itinerary ( also missing, albeit less suspiciously so ) .
----- Granted, maybe he’s getting old at the ripe age of twenty - five, since ❝ keeping a low profile ❞ apparently now means ❝ running into a masked vigilante within twenty minutes of leaping into Hell’s Kitchen. ❞
❝ ... So, this is awkward. ❞ He lands, cautiously optimistic. ❝ People make jokes about how many Bats there are in Gotham, but you Spider People might actually have us beat. ❞

It’s the FIRST TIME he’s seen her outside of a mission in --- well, it might not be an exaggeration to say years at this point. There was more than one beer can by him too, even if he can’t feel the effects of it bubbling in his stomach. It helps build the atmosphere; for a moment, for one simple moment, it makes it feel like they might actually get a chance to RETIRE some day ( instead of ending up at the bottom of the ocean in a box labeled “Property of SHIELD” ). They might as well just be two kids on a half-assed vacation.
“ --- You SURE about this?” He knows its a foolish question as much as it’s a foolish idea. Permanency isn’t exactly something they got to find themselves concerned with, but it’s still an easy question to ask when he’s got A NEEDLE in his hand. “At this point, I feel obligated to ask.”

‘ everybody wants a happy ending, right? but it doesn’t always roll that way. ’
“ WE’RE OLDER THAN THAT, JESSICA. ” The rare look into two people who have been circling each other ( circling, another word for encountering, for the recognition in another that occurs through years, through glimpses of each other before and during and after ).
Romantic notions hardly sway obvious truths, but there is something to be said in commitment to relentlessly pursuing what you are entitled to.
If her gaze is steady, it’s only because it is pointed. Still, she’s not unkind in her delivery, “ ——- We know luck has an odd way of falling in line with what people think they deserve. ”
