📝[INTERVIEW] VIXX returns after 4 years with exciting mini album and talks about visiting Brazil @koreain | @revistakoreain

VIXX , one of the darlings of the very talented 3rd generation of K-pop formed by Jellyfish Entertainment and which counts N , LEO , KEN , and HYUK as members, brightened Starlights ' end of the year even more by making their long-awaited return after 4 years old.

The comeback came through the mini album CONTINUUM, which contains five tracks — and mostly compositions and productions by the group's own members. KoreaIN had the pleasure of speaking with LEO , KEN and HYUK about this newest work that seeks to demonstrate VIXX's love for their fans.

KoreaIN: Hello VIXX, it's a pleasure to have the opportunity to do this interview. Firstly, congratulations on the success of your newest mini album CONTINUUM . Could you tell us a little about the process that led to the final product?

LEO: CONTINUUM is about VIXX's unique perspective and the members' story as they participated in the production of the album. I think that having participated in all stages of production, starting with the lyrics and compositions, was to communicate the path VIXX has taken, the growth we have achieved and the infinite possibilities that lie ahead when it comes to our fans. .  KEN: It's been 4 years since we released a new album for our Starlights, so I think we've worked really hard on it. We prepared a lot, as there are songs and lyrics composed by our members, and even if we didn't compose them, we provided significant contributions to the composers; aiming to create an album that meets the expectations of our fans.  HYUK: I even participated in the MV as Creative Director. I created a more cinematic worldview and story so that our members could showcase their acting skills that they had achieved through musicals and other individual activities.

KoreaIN: Still talking about your new mini album as a whole, if you could describe it in just one word, what would you choose?

LEO: I choose “Beginning”. KEN: I would like to call it “Memory” because I want to remember every moment from preparing for this album until now!  HYUK: I think the title of this album, “CONTINUUM”, is a word that really shows the relationship between VIXX and our fans.

KoreaIN: CONTINUUM talks a lot about continuity and your journey as a group so far. So I would like to ask, if you could give one piece of advice to your younger self who just debuted, what would it be?

LEO: “You’re doing great, keep working hard.” KEN: “KEN! Help me fill my 20s, 30s and 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and my whole life with VIXX, okay?” That's what I'd like to say! HYUK: “I know you will work hard, so I would like you to look around a little more, enjoy yourself and grow to be more mature.” That's what I would like to advise myself.

KoreaIN: This new concept combines your individual attributes with your attributes as a group. Could you talk about the strengths of VIXX as a group and the individual qualities of each member?

LEO: The strength of VIXX is that we have a unique identity and the members have a great balance of expanding our capabilities through solo activities.   KEN: My strengths as VIXX are… countless! We are cool, sexy, cute, friendly and funny. Plus, all the members are talented! They are intelligent and excellent at everything from singing to dancing! HYUK: As a genre, VIXX has already managed to showcase our unique vibe and energy, vocals, performances and visuals. And if you take the qualities of each member, LEO has an overwhelming charismatic presence and energy on stage, and KEN seems to have a vocal tone and power that no one can imitate.

KoreaIN: Continuing on about you as a group, VIXX is well known for always presenting unusual visuals and stories through various concepts. What has been your favorite concept out of the ones you've done so far? And would there be any concept that you haven't done yet and would particularly like to explore?

LEO: I want to choose “Fantasy” or “Chained Up.” If there's a concept I want to try in the future... We tried so many different concepts that I don't know what's left (laugh). However, I believe that members will be able to do well in any concept. KEN: Personally, my favorite was when we promoted “Scentist”! I really liked it, because our precious memories of the time are aplenty in the music and the concept of “Scentist.” And if there’s a new concept [you’d like to try]… Something even more unrealistic! I think it would be cool to try something a little fantastic!   HYUK: What I liked most was when we were promoting “Voodoo Doll.” We have good memories of our first win and I like the line “It's all going to get real” from “Voodoo Doll”, because it represents VIXX very well.

KoreaIN: We noticed that the members participated in writing the lyrics for this mini album. How do you feel participating in the production of your songs (including personal feelings and as a group)?

LEO: It was really cool to be able to include VIXX's true feelings on this album. There were many difficult moments during production, but also a lot of fun and happy moments. We finally managed to meet our fans again with several new songs after a long time, so I think VIXX made a great effort to communicate our true feelings through the album.   KEN: To be honest, I feel kind of disappointed that compared to LEO and HYUK, I wasn't able to contribute as much to the production of the album. I also felt bad for the rest of the members. However, I was very proud, because I was able to go deeper and share my opinions with everyone who helped us maintain the musicality and identity that VIXX wanted on this album .  HYUK: It was great to be able to clarify the theme and message we would like to convey while participating in the production of our song. More particularly, we know the story of each member's journey and the journey we have been following as a group, so I believe we can bring the colors of VIXX by participating in it ourselves.

KoreaIN: Now, talking about Brazil, you have visited the country a few times. How was the experience? Furthermore, could you imagine receiving so much love from a place on the other side of the world?

HYUK: We were one of the first K-pop artists to visit Brazil, so we didn't realize how much love we would receive until we visited. Thank goodness so many people loved us and loved K-pop so much that we were surprised. Furthermore, we remember how our fans in Brazil and South America showed their passion through vibrant animation and shared their love for music, in turn revitalizing us with contagious energy.

KoreaIN: Still talking about your Brazilian fans, among the 5 songs on CONTINUUM , which one do you think will be especially impressive for the Brazilian Starlights?

LEO: We were extensively involved in the album and tried our best to capture the essence of VIXX through it, so I think they managed to find a different quality and side of VIXX in each song. If I have to choose one song, I think our fans will be most impressed with “If You Come Tonight” as it genuinely communicates the story I want to share with Starlights.

KoreaIN: Before we finish, CONTINUUM is above all an album that showcases VIXX's love for STARLIGHTS. Could you please send a special message to the fans who have been waiting and rooting for you?

VIXX: STARLIGHT, hello, we are VIXX! Thank you so much for supporting us endlessly until we came back with our mini album CONTINUUM! As we knew that you have been waiting for our comeback for so long, we worked hard to show you the VIXX you missed and the VIXX that got better through new songs and promotions. Please give us lots of love and interest during these promotions and we hope we can meet in person and have an amazing experience together soon! Thanks!

¡Hola Saby! Your English is excellent! My mother tongue is not English either, I was born and raised in Brazil so we’re good. Google Translate and TheFreeDictionary are our best friends, am I right? XD

Yeah… I really try to tell myself it is for a good reason, as in: maybe those scenes were not as good as I thought they were? The dialogues are really hard to write again, though, because sometimes you’re sitting there waiting for the bus and all of a sudden characters start telling you the lines with the best wording possible and you just start writing them down in a napkin with eyeliner cause you know THAT IS IT, that’s what you had been trying to write for five days and to recreate that kind of moment is… ugh. Hard!

But let’s see how it goes. Hopefully this weekend all the pieces will fall into place and I will finally be happy enough with the chapter to post it.

Now, songs for Asami, you ask? Ahh, that’s some good stuff. *rubs hands excitedly*

See, if I could translate Asami into a song, that would definitely be the third movement of “Der Sturm”, by Beethoven (Piano Sonata No. 17). I just think it is very representative of him, his world, his relationship with Akihito. The sonata-rondo is almost like a musical equivalent of him as a businessman: organized, sophisticated, following a pattern, his days marked by repetition, control, no surprises. But this composition does not follow the cadential standards of a regular sonata: there are strong emotions, conflict, a dark, tumultuous nature underneath each note. So, stoic in the surface but a tempest underneath, sounds familiar? XD And then, right in the middle, there is the inverted lamentation, reminiscent of the other two movements, and it is soft and unusually sweet, almost like two lovers talking in the middle of a storm while their boat is sinking. Again: familiar? And the closing with the fortissimo is just as epic. When the song ends you even need a few moments to recover. Very intense. Very Asami, if you ask me.

Now, to be honest, my playlist for him is very eclectic. I can think of Asami when I listen to a number of songs, from Imagine Dragon’s “Believer” to James Blake’s “Retrograde” to Maroon 5′s “Animals” (this last one especially in relation to Akihito).

As to what kind of music Asami listens to, I love to entertain the idea that every now and then he puts on a yukata and very enthusiastically sings songs like Ijizakura when he thinks no one is watching, basically because he is known to collect guns from Japan’s Restoration days and even has a Major in Imperial Japan, the nerd. (And of course Akihito is always watching and even managed to record a 2 min vid of Asami’s performace, which he intends to use as a bargaining chip at some point of his life. Spoiler alert: he will never succeed.) 

PS: And I also like to think that when he is really focused on reviewing reports in his office, Asami mindlessly hums American pop songs from the 80s.

VIXX: An Outsiders Perspective

Now, I’ve decided on doing a VIXX critique using this formula because I’m very new to their work. As requested by some followers, I’ve crammed in as much information as I could about their music recently and want to share my thoughts on them and where they could improve. 

Let’s start.

The Good

Niche Music: VIXX is probably the most eclectic group I’ve done so far in that many of their singles are, essentially, pop-rock tracks. They are not a ‘hippity-hoppity, let’s throw on a blackcent and a bandana’ type of group, which, I argue, gives them space at the table in the music industry. Of all the groups I can think of, it’s them that is doing this capitalism thing right. People want differentiation in products and with VIXX being Nickelback-meets-NSYNC in an industry of Skrillex-meets-Chris Brown-meets-Soulja Boy’s, it’s actually kind of refreshing

Surprisingly Decent Vocal Line: VIXX stans can argue all day whether Jaehwan (Ken) or Taekwoon (Leo) is the superior vocal, but it’s obvious it’s Hakyeon (N). Let me tell you why: N has a stronger vocal technique than either Leo or Ken from what I’ve seen. Now, I know I could use to watch more VIXX performances but, as I said, from what I’ve seen N protects his voice more than the other two. Funnily enough, Ken is actually my favorite of them all. His tone is just agreeable. Even so, I find it difficult to find too many issues with Leo’s voice because he has the best stage presence of them all--bringing emotion into his performances that feels genuine--even if it’s not much

Creative Involvement: Hate him or love him, Wonsik (Ravi) is involved in just about every VIXX release that immediately comes to mind. And while this isn’t a requirement for me to find an idol good at what they do (will get into the distinction between artist and idol another time), I find it admirable. This is especially so since VIXX has some songs with very powerful lyrical content and meaning

Recent Improvement in Music Production: While my section on VIXX’s music will come later, I want to note now that VIXX’s latest release sounds very crisp and clean, which is a sign of improvement. Anytime a group grows, I always find it in me to give them a plus on the improvement. But seriously, their releases used to sound like they were recorded on a flip phone from a radio station that played it from a 1942 record player. It was a whole low-sonic quality mess. Now it finally sounds like what 2k HD looks like

The ‘Needs to Improve’

Dance Line: 

Current - While I find Hakyeon lighter than air and graceful in his movement, he does not captivate me. His dancing lacks energy at times and can even be seen as lethargic. He can’t even hold charismatic facial expressions because of it. While he delivers at times (his TOXIC routine is gold), he usually looks flat out exhausted. Perhaps this has something to do with being the main dancer in a group with only one back up for him?

Improvement - That said, I think Hakyeon can be saved. It’s clear that he has talent but not the proper outlet to show it. What I argue needs to happen for the dance line, particularly Hakyeon is a change in VIXX’s dancing style. I think that with more gender-fluid choreography, Hakyeon’s style could shine through. He looks best when performing choreography that isn’t attached to the mainstream kpop style for boy groups. Injecting feminine energy into VIXX’s choreography would make for a more lively performance than their typical point dances (if you’re curious as to what I mean, I urge you to check out Taemin’s MOVE or watch a strip show)

Music:

Current - VIXX’s music, for lack of a better term, is dated. The music they debuted with was about 5 years behind the industry (which was already five years behind the American industry) and they’re just now playing catch-up with their latest release. When I listen to some of those songs, I get the distinct feeling that VIXX watched SHINee Lucifer once and decided to model their entire discography off of it. Even to their latest release, it sounds like something EXO would’ve released in 2016. Now, you can argue that older-sounding music is a good thing, but in VIXX’s case, it’s not. Their music is not timeless, it’s just usually dated on arrival 

Improvement - Even with their music being dated, it’s still different from the norm and has a sound that no other kpop group since VIXX’s debut has even wanted to touch. They can easily take this sound and update it, giving them a 2013 Paramore feel (which, 2013 Paramore still sounds like fresh alternative rock music)

Current - A lot of their music sounds the same. There’s some standouts like Love Me Do and Only U, but most of it sounds like different variations of songs like Error and Chained Up

Improvement - See: Paramore. Seriously. I’m not talking about their most recent album but in albums before that they still had music that felt like Paramore without being the same thing rehashed. I think VIXX could ultimately go the soft EDM-pop rock fusion route and eliminate the High School Musical 4 sound that invades many of their songs

Current - VIXX’s music videos aren’t horrible, not even by a stretch. They’re just not interesting. This is pretty standard in kpop, but that doesn’t mean they should shoot for the sky when they can have the moon. Their concepts are usually so interesting and so different from the norm that they could really get creative with their music videos

Improvement - VIXX finally got their hands on cameras that weren’t attached to iPhones, so can they now get a VFX and SFX team to bring their concepts to life without looking like a cheesy low budget mess? I know they come from a smaller company and may not have the money to really go all out but I think it’s worth a shot to find a good production team to execute their concepts better. At the very least, they could use better direction and maybe even give their videos a story line. Am I the only one who’d find a plot for Chained Up dope, especially since the song itself tells a story?

The Irredeemable

Get rid of Ravi. There, I said it, it’s done. 

I know VIXX stans gonna hate my ass lmao. But, I’m not saying he’s a bad artist/not talented/etc. I just don’t know that he’s right for VIXX’s progression as a musical performance entity. Here is my main reason:

VIXX should be a vocal k-pop/rock group. They don’t need a rapper, never did. In fact, rap portions usually do not advance VIXX’s songs. Instead, it sounds like forcing a YG-reject to fit in with a SHINee/CNBlue hybrid experiment. Ravi’s an okay singer, but he’s not good enough to eat at the table with Ken and Leo, who are more like ex-EXO/DBSK members to me

Another thing that limits VIXX is the fact that they are very boybandish at times. Now you may say, ‘Sis, they are a boyband,’ but this crtique isn’t about what VIXX is, it’s about what they could be. VIXX has the potential to be the emo cousin of EXO, with moody concepts and experimental choreography. I know some of them play instruments as well, which could only add to their new identity once we’ve cut them down. The South American and Southeast Asian markets would eat that up, especially since VIXX is already so good at it

Also, maybe not be trash? I kind of wanted to avoid this, but it’s hard to do considering the fact that all I knew about VIXX before working on this was the fact that N was bullied into submission by the members and some of them have said some vile things that only compete with the likes of Suju for their level of trashness. The main reason why I wanted to mention this is because of what I see for VIXX’s path in the future (I also want to note that I didn’t let this color my musical critique of VIXX)

I see VIXX as a staple in Latin America and Southeast Asia, but it’s hard to do when you’re constantly shit-talking the looks of the people who inhabit these areas. Dark skin and Tanned skin are beautiful and nothing to be ashamed of. Pale skin isn’t superior and calling someone a “half-breed” as an insult isn’t funny? All it does is alienates potential fans from the markets that would be open to your style the most. Because, if I’m being honest, I don’t know many people from where I’m from (probably the whitest place in America) that would be too into VIXX’s music and concepts. Their wave is more appropriate for places like Brazil and The Phillipines. If they want to grow their audience, they need to grow as people

Hongbin and Hyuk both remind me of Sehun. Take that as you want.

VIXX is not meant for the Bangtan trajectory. They have their own special place in kpop that is so unique from other groups that they shouldn’t worry themselves with North American success. I think they’re talented men with something to prove, and with a little adjustment, they can become a niche phenomenon

Camping is super fun, you should definitely try it! I recommend going together with someone more experienced the first couple of times because a lot of the time there are things that go in ways you don't expect them to and it's easier to have someone who kinda knows what they're doing along when that happens XD also tents are really annoying to set up and you want all the help you can get lol

I much prefer heat to cold as well - I get cold super easily, like if it gets below 65°F (about 18°C) I need a jacket... Going out in the cold can be fun but I'm a bit of a wimp 😅

Some of the countries I'd really like to visit are Ireland, Scotland, Greece, Brazil, Italy, Japan, and Korea - honestly I wish I could go everywhere, there are so many beautiful places around the world and I'd love to see as many as I can!

Hm a summary... it's basically a story about young adulthood and finding your place in the world (and also found family). Some of the characters are in college, some are graduates or dropouts, and a couple are seniors in high school, and they all have various struggles with family, school, work, friends, etc, and help each other get through them. There isn't really a single overarching plot, it's more like a bunch of stories that all intertwine and overlap with each other, but I have very clear ideas of how each character is going to grow and develop over the course of it and what issues they have to overcome... it's going to be a lot of very emotional stuff haha

I'm slowly building an album collection - right now I've got every Pentagon album, plus two ONEUS albums, two DAY6 albums, one SF9 album, one Stray Kids album, one BTS album, and one VIXX album. I do use streaming services, but I don't trust the internet (thinking about that thing that happened where KakaoM had all that music taken off Spotify awhile ago) so I want to have physical copies of the music I really like... hopefully CD players don't stop existing anytime soon 😂
