ybc musical costume in-depth analysis! 💥🎸🎱
hi! I'm jordan, the costume designer (and also an actor and co-writer) of "the young blood chronicles" musical! i posted this on instagram, but i thought it might be cool to post it here too!
my initial role in “the young blood chronicles” musical was costume design, which, as a fashion enthusiast, i was incredibly excited about. i spent about a month curating a huge pinterest board collection and creating individual moodboards. the show takes place in 2013, but i wanted to take inspiration from both pre and post-hiatus fall out boy looks! here’s an in-depth look :’)
patrick’s main inspo was his “soul punk” era, which lives distinctly in the hiatus. i wanted something that would remind us that years had passed since the last time the band had made music together; something cool and trendy, but a little too dressed up for a long day in the studio. even when not onstage, ybc patrick is performing. clothes can give you power and he knows that. the yellow sunglasses were our way of getting around patrick’s glowing yellow eyes from the music videos, but i really love how it makes it seem like he has a mask on. it makes the end of “miss missing you” even more heartbreaking.
pete’s main inspo came from both his early clandestine drops as well as his more androgynous looks (both pre & post-hiatus). pete really cares about fashion, but he still has a chill la vibe. 2013 pete could often veer more edgy, but i chose to move in a different direction in order to better distinguish pete and patrick’s styles. unless you’re a vixen or patrick, you don’t get a leather jacket! sorry pete! to me, pete’s fashion has always felt so current while still being forward-thinking. ybc pete’s outfit could be from 2006 or 2024 and that was very purposeful!
andy’s looks are mostly pulled from more recent years, but band tees never go out of style. the mesh top under the tee alludes to his tattoos, which make up the extent of his stage looks these days since he typically does shows without a shirt on. celia had this mesh top in her closet and i love the colors on her (it’s the only source of color in the heaven outfits!). andy’s outfit is maybe the simplest of the four on paper, but i think it’s sick. it’s laid back, but super specific and grounded. it makes me want to start wearing basketball shorts.
joe’s looks are pulled from both pre-hiatus and early post-hiatus looks! striped sweaters & cargo pants are things he’s worn before, so i'm lucky i had them in my closet (especially since i wasn’t originally joe!). joe, especially in recent years, really likes wearing dark colors onstage, but, similar to how i avoided leather jackets for pete, i wanted to very clearly differentiate the boys from the vixens. any black piece of clothing on any of the boys had to be broken up with a design or pattern. no all black outfits! sorry joe!
the goal with the heaven outfits was to make the exact same outfits in all white. i wanted the exact same silhouettes as before. i’d say we were pretty successful! we got really lucky when it came to finding these costume pieces.
my vixens! these costumes were a lot more nebulous throughout the process. many of the costume pieces came from the actors’ own wardrobes. it was really important to me that each vixen had her own distinct style. baylee’s vixen (whom she named blair) has a more feminine style, her main costume piece being a lacy leotard. she's sweet with an edge. ava’s vixen is second-in-command & her outfit really screams that. the lingerie top is so killer. alexa’s vixen is almost a mix of baylee’s & ava’s in terms of style. the outfit is sweet, but edgy with the ripped tights & lingerie-style top. lauren’s vixen is a little more utilitarian, actually dressed in a way that makes sense for kidnapping four people. she’s more sporty than the others, but her combat boots are incredibly threatening. hbic is all that and more. her outfit is simple, but powerful. she is terrifying.
tiffany had to feel a bit like an outsider. she’s wearing the vixen clothes, but her jacket has some color on it. it’s a little too big on her. the other vixens really live in & embody their clothes, but for tiffany, it's a bit more like a costume.
here’s how i describe the angels: 1) the hottest girls at the ren faire & 2) like that picture of the angel guiding the two kids that every latine family has in their house. they almost feel out of place; so incredibly fluid in a show that is mostly made up of harsh lines. texture and layers were really the name of the game here, but the angels still have an edge to them. to quote fob: “…angels choking on their halos, get them drunk on rose water. see how dirty i can get them, pullin' out their fragile teeth & clip their tiny wings.”
+ i made pete’s bass machete and tiffany’s/joe’s guitar axe! i don’t have much to say about them, but i loved getting to utilize my cosplay foam skills.
this was my first time ever costuming a show and it was such a dream. the entire cast was so willing to experiment with me and it was such a joy to revisit aspects of 2013 fashion, which i remember from my preteen years, but never got to truly participate in! :’)

ok im still thinking about the ybc musical
i absolutely love how they changed the motivation of the vixens. in the original youngblood chronicles music videos the vixens didn't seem to have a clear goal besides "destroy music"; the fact that it was music videos with no dialogue doesn't help that vagueness
in the ybc musical, though, they specifically said that the vixens not just wanted to destroy music: they wanted to take music back to a time when it was all "sex drugs and rock and roll", they wanted music to glorify pain and suffering, they don't want music that heals to get out there. in the musical, instead of an apocalypse-demon, the briefcase holds the finished mp3 files of the album save rock and roll. the vixens want the briefcase because they don't want it to be released to the public.
the musical also implies that fob are not the first victim of the vixens: the vixen on the inside who gives pete and andy the bass machete and snare drum crossbow (the musical calls her tiffany) tells pete and andy that she used to be in a band too, she's the only surviving member.
just. the thesis statement of "they want to make money off your trauma, they want everyone to be miserable, they want you to be in the worst time of your life for the benefit of others, music that heals has no place in their new world order, so we need to be the change."
#kinda reminds me of the costumes mcr wore to wwwy 2022- their 3 cheers for sweet revenge outfits but in makeup that makes them look old#the commentary!!! the implications!!! i am going feral#rambles#ybc musical#fall out boy#the youngblood chronicles

ancient, medieval and the dance of the dragons
throughout history, asoiaf and the dance of the dragons, we have this consistent trend of women shunned for yearning to have agency and control. just as much, we also see the anger of a patriarchal system regarding the wanting of the opposite sex. women wish to have a say in what happens to them and this causes a rift in society, for it is as said controlled by men. well, let’s dive into the reasons for why this is.
in ‘goddesses, whores, wives and slaves’, sarah pomeroy states, “women pervade nearly every genre of classical literature, yet often the bias of the author distorts the information”;
this much is true when you consider that women are heavily involved in society. from being mothers, to being hunter and gatherer to even being part of literate and philosophical communities. yet there is this negating of women’s importance in the roles they had served. in short, the recording of early literature restricts women as secondary, in line with the glorification of the male sex.
this is a travesty for many reasons. for one, it is within written word such as literature that records societal beliefs and cultures. another is that these societal records become a bench – mark for the communities to follow. conclusively, these relay a way of life that become the example for other communities; which then create consistency of beliefs, roles, attitudes in the way of life. hence, a community learns to act a certain way, it becomes a foundation in their culture.
it is because of this that leads us to surmise that women are at a disadvantage, because if they are then written by men who have a certain perspective about women–then women are going to be unheard. and this will taint the records and paint them as fictional thoughts of misogyny. women have no part of those perspectives, for they were recorded by creatures who controlled, contained and exploited their way of life in the molds they created.
this is why in ancient literature, we see how often women are relegated to two categories. the first category is where women are considered nothing better than objects; a means of advancement by using these women to further their agendas and pawns. hence, women are bound to the roles of being a possession to the powerful men around them.
quite certainly, reading the texts make it obvious that their titular roles in society are either being prizes in marital contests or being someone’s joyous loot in battle. the more authority they had of these ‘properties’ and ‘possessions’, the more they were worthy of prestige and respect within their wider society. made by men for men.
a good example is emperor augustus’s daughter julia the elder. within the standards of ancient rome, being the daughter of her father meant that he had absolute control of her life, she was his property. everything about julia the elder controlled, because she was from the moment she was born— a political tool to her father’s plans.
all her marriages were arranged by him, her decisions are influenced by him—even whom she slept with was political because her body was a vehicle of political convention. the moment she stepped out of his mold, he punished her and for all his care for her, shunned her to be unwanted by him and the vision of rome he was building.
just as much, along with these fictitious portrayals, more lies are depicted. these women are considered vixens that cause havoc to men by shifting them into desires and danger. through the written word, we see how women are cast in roles of villains in men’s lives. it is because by their conclusive thoughts, women are the only creatures that are able to turn ‘good honorable men’ into despicable creatures who do shameful, deplorable acts for the sake of women’s pleasures.
it is within this narrative that ancient chroniclers declare that women were in fact the doom of men. if they were not able to control the dangers posed by the wiles of women, then the foundations of the mighty society they had built would be up in flames.
a good example for this is clytemnestra, wife of agamemnon. in the telling of the trojan war by greek tragedian aeschylus, odysseus visits the underworld and finds his deceased comrade agamemnon and when he asks him how he died, agamemnon says that it is clytemnestra and her lover aegisthus—whom she takes to lover in order to not only avenge her daughter’s death at agamemnon’s hands, but also to have power and agency.
which agamemnon laments to odysseus, telling him that he should be careful when returning home for he was doomed by his wife and warns it could happen to odysseus too, yet he says odysseus’s wife penelope is ‘not that kind of women’; which to agamemnon’s thoughts, his wife was one of trickery doom which lead to his death, someone who was not a good wife.
in agamemnon’s eyes, penelope was someone his wife would not betray odysseus in such a violent way. the homeric version supports this narrative, that she was a faithful and steadfast wife to odysseus in many years that passed. she was used as a paragon of virtues of ancient greek societies which shunned women that are like clytemnestra.
as i mentioned, these factors of community are written down and preserved. and with that, the example of the ancients were the foundations by which medieval society built itself. the same concepts continued to cause the same issue within society and that was the exclusion of women from participating in the bigger picture of community and state, much so with governing states in their own right—without judgment or disapproval.
in the paper ‘salic law, french queenship and the defense of women in the late middle ages’ by craig taylor, he cites various precedences such as the lex salica by the salian franks which becomes a measure of exclusionary of women from inheriting active political power. though slowly forgotten generations later, the french crown used it as a way to defend itself from the incursion of other foreign states. hence this was an attempt to give the valois monarchy a strong case against the english, who aimed to have access to france by using female descent.
this exclusion of female inheritance of ancestral land was constantly defended by intellectual figures, mostly men. they would use the fact that it is too sacred of a position, citing that women cannot be anointed with holy chism. a queen would then lack a sacral qualities, the divine authority anointed by god to carry out the duties done by a king, as per jean golein in ‘traité du sacre’;
when that no longer was sufficient, they used the excuse that women were excluded due to the fact that men had far greater skill and qualities that were superior to women. as per usual, the argument had come from ancient sources such as aristotle who claimed that men far superseded women in absolutely anything.
french philosopher nicole oresme used this basis to perpetuate that women were feeble as they are malicious, unwise and irrational to the point that all their advice were confined to petty domesticity—hence, women had no place in the positions of public office and power. it is easier to understand why there is quite a bias regarding women gaining not only authority but a voice. the ancients have relegated women as nothing more than a passing footnote;
they were written off to be not as important as the men who declare their creation of far greater deeds in wars and battles than the women that were cradling society with their existence and sacrifices. now let us apply the context of the anarchy, the struggle for the english throne between empress matilda and stephen of blois and that of rhaenyra targaryen against her brother aegon ii targaryen.
rhaenyra targaryen in many years as heir and then queen at war–faced threats and usurpation as empress matilda had in her own lifetime. both women, despite being legitimate heirs chosen and annointed by their royal parents, faced substantial challenges rooted in the societal norms and power dynamics of their respective realms.
empress matilda was the designated heir to henry i of england, rhaenyra was designated as the heir by her father, king viserys i targaryen. however, the same fragile skepticism and fear of a female ruler were deeply ingrained in both english and westerosi cultures during their times. in their authority as women in power, they were both considered ‘others’ in their society.
empress matilda's assertiveness and pride in her station were perceived as unlikable traits, similar to how rhaenyra's ambition and determination to be both heir and queen were labeled as undesirable and haughty. in both cases, women who deviated from the prescribed roles dictated by men's ideals were seen as divergent to the context of their patriarchal societies. and equally so, shunned as deviants from the natural course of existence.
additionally, their experiences of living and governing in foreign lands made them a topic of suspicion by their own nobles. matilda's time in the holy roman empire and normandy, and rhaenyra’s many years away in dragonstone had become a means of isolation, which found her a foreigner in her own lands.
just as much her marriage to the daemon targaryen was considered a frightening prospect due to her husband's reputation as a rogue and the biases of people around them. matilda’s own marriage to geoffrey of anjou were viewed with suspicion and uncertainty—-a sources of concern in potential foreign influence from anjou, geoffrey's own fief.
just as empress matilda faced resistance from men like stephen of blois and his loyal nobles, rhaenyra was contested by her half-brother aegon ii and his supporters. the feudal system played a significant role in both instances, with the give-and-take between lords being used to bypass the women's legal claims. this exploitation of the feudal system worked against them, undermining their rightful positions.
both matilda and rhaenyra had to contend with the opportunistic nature of their opponents, who capitalized on the confusion and power vacuum following the passing of their fathers. stephen's ability to make quick and decisive decisions worked to his advantage, just as the swift action of alicent hightower in crowning her son aegon ii in allowed him to gain an upper hand. matilda's and rhaenyra's efforts to gather and consolidate military support were hindered by logistical challenges and the scattering of their bases of support, with the spread of war and battle.
medieval society was deeply entrenched in misogyny, a prejudice that cast a shadow over the capabilities and aspirations of women. one that women from ancient and medieval eras such as empress matilda had to contend with. this bias was evident even in fictional worlds, relating to the foundations and struggles echoing ancient and medieval world structures.
the case of rhaenyra targaryen, whose claim to the iron throne was overshadowed by the ascension of her brother, aegon ii targaryen, had created a horrible outcome for westeros. the prevailing belief in the inferiority of women was perpetuated by traditional norms, which dictated that leadership and power were inherently male domains.
and this ideals were not only founded in ridiculous lies, but further exposed the biases of men who cannot handle the thought of women being far more capable and equipped in statecraft than men. women like rhaenyra faced a relentless struggle against societal constraints that questioned their ability to exercise agency in their own right.
her eventual usurpation by aegon ii and the greens was not only a reflection of patriarchal norms but also a power struggle within the context of dynastic politics. the deeply ingrained misogyny founded on ‘tradition’ did nothing but contribute to the undermining of rhaenyra's legitimacy, allowing her brother to seize power, despite her stronger claim and potential qualifications.
although, both rhaenyra and matilda were declared queen and still the realm of men shun their wanting to use it. matilda was not ever formalized as queen of england and rhaenyra was taken off the roll of kings. though their bloodlines had won the game of thrones, there was far too much progress that could have come with their anointing as the first recognized queen regnants of their respective kingdoms.
this would cause a shift that exposed their kingdoms and thrones to more patriarchal influences which did irreparable damage. from war to war, to women relegated back into fighting for power behind men. the years that later passed ensured the perpetual deprivation of women’s right to rule and reign as in their own right. the damage done by such precedence for both kingdoms and as well as others would take far too long of a time to truly ever heal.

no ok like. i know this is The YBC Blog and all but i really truly need to go off about how GENUINELY fucking fascinating the whole "young volcanoes" video is on a metatextual level. like the entirety of the youngblood chronicles says a WHOLE hell of a lot about the band in terms of the metaphors it's painting wrt the hiatus and reformation and the fact that they took this particular song (sonically incredibly airy and cheerful, lyrically desolate) and turned it into the dinner party from hell. this is a story where an external force chops up the lead singer and hollows him out and then serves his organs to the rest of the band. theyre made to consume him, literally, against their will!!! and thats not all!! they are vividly hallucinating at this point, because theyve been heavily drugged - again, against their will! - and they see this whole thing as a joyous affair. in their blitzed out brains, this is them reuniting after the harrowing experience of being kidnapped off the goddamn streets! and then they have this fucked up trippy GROUP HALLUCINATION where they are literally EATING PATRICKS ORGANS. and in the real world, none of them can see this happening - except patrick. patrick is not blindfolded. patrick can see them being forcefed his own viscera and he's too fucking high off his ass to do anything about it. in fact, in reality, he barely acknowledges his bandmates at all.
like just thinking about this from a metaphorical perspective. its fucking fascinating innit. the band literally cannibalizes patrick against their will, and he cannibalizes himself against his will, and they are all made to believe this is something that they want to have happen. they are misled and drugged into this. they eat him alive. they eat him ALIVE. and they are made to think they're having a great time doing it.
the band consumes itself for the seeming entertainment of the onlooking vixens. and they don't explore this through the avenue of pete, who the rest of the band regularly cites as the creative impetus behind the band, but through patrick, the voice. the mouthpiece. the one who sings the words. this is the third fucking video they released when the band came back from hiatus. and its this. it is the band being forced to consume the lead singer and primary composer from the inside, and him participating in this forced consumption.
it makes me grip my head and scream. we witness this horrifying incident so early and things only get worse and worse from there. for all that patrick kills joe and pete later in the narrative, they have patrick's blood on their lips first, staining their mouths, slicking their insides. and, like the case with patrick, who has been warped into something violent, they don't do this willingly; it is done to them. we see what true and genuine hatred of music and creativity has motivated the vixens to do. and in contrast we see, by the story's end, the thesis statement that the defenders of the faith love each other beyond any earthly horror that can be inflicted upon them. how unbelievably unfathomably fucking captivating for this to be present at the very start, this warped perversion of that kind of love. what else is friendship and brotherhood but this. what else is love at its most destructive and possessive than this. we are friends, we are brothers in arms, we are companions until the bitterest of all bitter ends. we have wrought immeasurable horrors upon each other. we have consumed each other. we have eaten each other alive. we all have each other's blood on our hands and in our mouths. if save rock and roll is the brightest and most elevated declaration of love imaginable, then young volcanoes is the darkest and most twisted. we don't want to be here. we're having the time of our lives. we're trapped. we're screaming. we missed you. we are better together. we are destroying each other. we love you. we love you to the most twisted and horrific and absolute endpoint imaginable. we love you. they won't let us stop loving you. we love you. they won't let us stop. we love you.
#THATS NOT EVEN TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE SNAKE MY GOD THE FUCKING SNAKE#THE WAY ITS THIS TANGIBLE REPRESENTATION OF COLLECTIVE TRAUMA#they NEVER see the snake in young volcanoes. it never appears in reality.#but in just one yesterday they all instantly fucking recognize it and they are HORRIFIED by it#I HATE THIS STUPID MOVIE. I AM GUARANTEED TO HAVE PUT MORE THOUGHT INTO THIS THAN THE DAMN BAND.#AND YET IT CAPTIVATES ME.....#*making poasts#cannibalism cw#i mean. since i talk about it pretty prominently lol

fun idea I came up with along with @xo8ball:
three cheers for sweet revenge but it's the youngblood chronicles.
Patrick: The Demolition Man. Was kidnapped and possessed by an evil demon. Wants to be reunited with his bandmates and regain his humanity, and is told by the Devil the only way for that to happen to kill three Evil Men.
Pete, Andy, Joe: The Three Evil Men Patrick is sent to hunt down and kill. unfortunately for Patrick, in his possessed state, does not recognize them as his bandmates
The Devil: Courtney Love, her Vixens kidnapped and possessed Patrick. Wants Rock and Roll destroyed.
#me posts#ybcpatrick the guy ever#i need to start making posts for all the ideas and aus we come up with what is this the fourth one?#our first and sweetest is of course demon patrick#second is when he is an evil murder boy who eats his friends#third is the purgatory one we're talking about#and now this#just collecting all of our info into one cohesive post

Welcome to Fox Pokemon Central
Hey everyone, the name's Caleb Vixen, Pokemon Professor and Fox Pokemon Expert. Ever since I was a kid, I always had an obsession with fox Pokemon. Which is probably gonna cost some money. Oh boy.
I will use this blog to chronicle my studies and post updates on what my adorable foxy buddies are up to. Feel free to send me asks about fox pokemon cause that's a thing I know a lot about.
Here's a list of my Pokemon, since my card only lets me have six on there:

Also, please go easy on me when it comes to science stuff, I'm a Liberal Arts Major pretending to be a Science Major I know jack shit about anything and Pokemon science makes no sense anyways.)

Shanie's Creation Masterlist!
Updated 04/18/24
Masterlist of all the fanworks I have out there.
Quick Link: My Steenerico Disney Fic, "The Happiest Luchador on Earth" is located HERE, while the rest of the in-universe stories, "Of Masks, Mice, and Men" are located HERE.
For anyone interested, both THLoE and OMMaM make up what I refer to as "The Generico!verse" due to the fact that the entire universe hinges on the singular notion that El Generico is NOT Sami Zayn and, in fact, Sami Zayn never existed in this universe, nor does Kevin Owens. There are only Steen and Generico in this universe and the stories are about the two of them meeting, falling in love, realizing they are in love, realizing how much they need each other, and really, just the two of them navigating the world together as best friends and eventual lovers, trying to get by despite their various neurodivergencies.
The rest of the fanworks are beneath cut

I support Rhaenyra but her treatment of Nettles was absolutely racist, abhorrent and unwarranted, since Nettles was nothing but loyal to her cause. (And as someone who doesn’t ship Daemyra, I don’t think that Daemon and Nettles were lovers. Daemon taking care of Nettles is probably because she reminds him of his daughter, Baela).
*EDITED POST* (11/13/23)
I've mentioned Rhaenyra's classist blood purity jumping out more in her paranoia, that it is a "companion" & result of the Targ-Andal assimilative paradigm. I even wrote a whole Twitter thread about it. And yes, Nettles was loyal to her, Jace, the rest of her kids, and their claims.
Still, I like the Daemyra concept and storyline, and I don't think you need to have an ideal relationship to see it as a valid relationship. I also already stated that I wouldn't like to see Rhaenyra ascend bc of that blod purity/racism.
Classism and blood purity.....we'll have to wait a few more hundred years for that to come screaming down.
As for Daemon and Nettles, yeah, wrote about that as well. I also think they had more of a father-daughter relationship if not almost-mentor-mentee.
I've heard a theory that Daemon is her actual father from one of his many times of sex with others. Nettles was 17 by the Dance (129 A.C.), so she was born around 113. (Neither Daemon/Rhaenyra nor Daemon/Laena were married by then, he was whoring his way through KL and Driftmark & Hull were just a short dragon's ride away from KL.)
It's a very plausible and a very attractive theory, bc it provides a good line of reasoning for how he bonded so quickly with her after his interest was already peaked with her ability to bond with a dragon at all. What if he suspected or found out who her mom was (though how well would he remember his unimportant trysts? This is something we should also note) for her to exist? Couple that with his own history of losing his first child in Viserys' exile of Mysaria? There have been numerous brave people--children--in the Dance and it certainly helps that Nettles didn't already have a familial bond with anyone or was "claimed" by anyone like Bloody Ben, Addam and Alyn Velaryon. It also gives a lot more credence and finally provides the missing connection/hinge I keep trying to find in hamliet's suggestion that Mysaria targeted Nettles out of envy through Rhaenyra bc of her own inability to have children or family bc of the classism & bastardry stigma of Westerosi aristocracy.
(8/21/23):
THIS is a great post by @mononijikayu about medieval queens, female rulers, the history of how women in leadership positions were made and seen as threats to the very structure of social “order”, and contextualizing Rhaenyra thru Empress Matilda. I didn’t even know about Matilda’s husband being comparable to Rhaneyra’s Daemon! PLZ READ!!!!
Excerpt:
just as much, along with these fictitious portrayals, more lies are depicted. these women are considered vixens that cause havoc to men by shifting them into desires and danger. through the written word, we see how women are cast in roles of villains in men’s lives. it is because by their conclusive thoughts, women are the only creatures that are able to turn ‘good honorable men’ into despicable creatures who do shameful, deplorable acts for the sake of women’s pleasures. [...] itis within this narrative that ancient chroniclers declare that women were in fact the doom of men. if they were not able to control the dangers posed by the wiles of women, then the foundations of the mighty society they had built would be up in flames. [...] as i mentioned, these factors of community are written down and preserved. and with that, the example of the ancients were the foundations by which medieval society built itself. the same concepts continued to cause the same issue within society and that was the exclusion of women from participating in the bigger picture of community and state, much so with governing states in their own right—without judgment or disapproval.
