Celebrations - Vivianne Miedema/Reader

(Y/N) POV
I grinned as I wrapped my arms around Viv’s waist as I picked her up to spin her around. Viv scoffed in my arms before I put her down. She shook her head at me as I only followed behind her.
“Come on, Viv! Be excited! You’re back!” I cheered. Viv only rolled her eyes. “Come on, darling. It’s been three hundred and eleven days. You’re allowed to get excited and celebrate coming back.”
“We’ll celebrate when I actually get subbed onto the pitch,” Viv said.
I shrugged at that. I knew that Viv had been nervous about coming back, but I had been there every step of the way to assure her that she was going to be okay. I had missed getting to play with Viv for so long now and I knew that Jonas was going to sub her on even if it was just for a few minutes.
I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t keep my excitement in. Katie was right there with me. Not that it surprised any of us since Katie was consider the president of Viv’s fan club.
Honestly, I was just really looking for when Viv would finally get to start again. I couldn’t wait to play with her in the starting eleven again.
“Schatje,” Viv called out. I paused my animated retelling of my most recent trip home to turn to Viv. I grinned when Viv motioned in front of her. “Come sit.”
I abandoned my storytelling as I made my way over to where Viv was before I felt her running her hands through my hair so that she could pull it up for me. It was a small thing we had started after Viv realized how nervous I got before games during my first season with Arsenal.
It wasn’t long before Katie came to sit in front of me so that the two of us could talk about how excited we were for our national team camps that would be coming up. Everyone would be flying out the next morning to get to their respective camps.
While I couldn’t wait to go home and see all my national teammates, I was a bit bummed out that Viv wouldn’t be able to come watch my games this time around as she would finally be back with the Dutch National Team. Viv had assured me that she would still make time to watch my matches though as I promised to watch hers as well.
“What are you most excited for, (Y/N)?”
“Tobin and Christen said they’d come out to catch the second game since it’s in San Diego,” I said with a grin.
It was no secret that Tobin and Christen had taken me under their wing when I joined the national team. My Arsenal teammates had been surprised though when I had finally convinced Tobin to join Arsenal and they had seen just how close the two of us were. But I hadn’t had much of a chance to see the two while preparing for the World Cup and helping Viv rehab, all the while both Tobin and Christen were dealing with their own injuries.
“You must miss them, huh?” Katie asked as she nudged my foot with her own. “All of your national teammates?”
My situation was a bit different from everyone else’s on the team, it seemed. Pretty much everyone else at Arsenal had someone from the same country as them on the team. Or they at least knew someone who was playing the WSL that they knew from their national team.
Lindsey was my closest teammate and even then, she was in France. Well, I guess that I did have Catarina Macario and Mia Fishel both were still so new to the team that I wasn’t that close to either of them. I was closer to Jessie Flemming than I was to either of them.
“Yeah, I really do miss them,” I nodded. I hadn’t been called up for our September friendlies after I had been publicly critical of Vlatko and the USSF for keeping him around for so long, but the federation knew that they would only be able to keep me off the team for a short amount of time before there was clear outcry to have me back. “Besides, Becky’s going to be back in camp, so we’ll finally get Captain America back on the field. Maybe we’ll get her to finally score too.”
“Yeah, good luck with that,” Katie said.
Viv pressed a kiss to the top of my head before she moved from where she was sitting. I let Katie help me up before the two of us had headed out to get lined up since we were both starting today.
While we were waiting in the tunnel I couldn’t help as I kept bouncing on my heels. This should be a good game for us after all. Plus, we had a celebration dinner planned for after the game for Viv’s return.
The second the whistle blew to start the match I knew that it was going to be a rough one. Not that it completely surprised me, Bristol hadn’t won a match yet this year and no one ever wanted to start the season off with four losses so they would try their hardest to stop that from happening. That meant targeting Alessia and staying on my back as well.
Honestly, it was a pretty smart tactic. Alessia’s temper could almost rival Katie’s and that was saying something. If they could draw Alessia into getting a yellow, or even a red, it would shift the game.
There was just one major detail that Bristol was forgetting.
We’ve got McCabe.
Katie scored a banger in the seventh minute giving us the advantage that we had all expected to have.
But it was just two minutes later that the advantage came crashing down.
I had made a run for the ball but struggled to get my balance as I had taken a small shove from one of the Bristol players that sent me crashing to the ground. I had heard the dreaded pop our recent ACL squad at Arsenal had described as I hit the ground. I was immediately clutching at my knee even as play continued around me.
Katie was the first one to realize that I was actually hurt as I hadn’t gotten up yet. She was quick to fight to get the ball back before kicking it out so that the play would stop. She was also the first one over to me.
“Please, tell me it’s your ankle,” Katie said as she knelt on the ground next to me. I clenched my teeth as I shook my head. “(Y/N), please tell me it’s something other than your knee.”
“I’d love to,” I said, causing Katie to let out a sigh of relief. It was always worrying, no matter what color jersey a player wore, when they went down because it seemed like a majority of injuries these days were ACL injuries. “But it’s definitely my knee.”
“Okay,” Katie nodded. I saw her briefly turn to signal for a sub so I could go off. “It’s gonna be okay. Maybe it isn’t that bad.”
“Yeah, maybe.”
I wasn’t surprised by our other teammates coming to check on me or how Kim also stayed close.
“Just a sprain, yeah?” Katie suggested. I glanced up to see that Kim didn’t look super confident in that possibility. “Or just a hyperextended knee? So long as you didn’t hear a pop there’s a chance it isn’t your ACL. Did you hear a pop?”
My eyes caught where Viv was standing on the sideline. I couldn’t let her stand there and worry about me. Not when we were supposed to celebrate her return.
The trainers were close enough to us that they were able to hear our conversation.
“I didn’t hear a pop or feel one,” I assured Katie. I knew that Irish woman would be angry with me when the news did come out because I was already certain that it was my ACL, but I refused to be the reason that Viv’s night was ruined. “I’m sure these guys will take good care of me and have me back on the field in no time.”
Katie nodded as the trainers moved next to me. Kim grabbed ahold of Katie’s arm to pull her up.
“Come on, Katie,” Kim softly coaxed the Irish woman. “(Y/N) will be all right. Let’s get out of the way and let the trainers do their thing.”
Katie hesitated but I smiled at her and nodded so she went with Kim while I let the trainers help roll me over. I brought my hand to cover up my mouth so that no one would be able to read my lips.
“It definitely popped,” I admitted behind my hand. The trainers froze at that because I had just told Katie that it didn’t. “Don’t tell the team. I don’t want to ruin Viv’s night with my own torn ACL.”
“You sure?”
“I heard it and felt it pop. It’s definitely torn.”
The trainers nodded before they moved to load me on the stretcher. I knew that it was something that had become precautionary with all the severe knee injuries so many players had been through recently.
They carried me off the field, but I let them stop so that Viv could check on me once we reached the tunnel, so it was a bit more private. I sent her a soft smile as she crouched so that she was at my height as she cupped my face.
“Your knee?” Viv asked.
“I doubt it’s that serious. It doesn’t feel that bad, I promise,” I assured her. I couldn’t help how the guilt gnawed at me as I said the words because I knew that she would be upset and worried when she did find out that my ACL was torn. “They’re just taking me out on the stretcher as a precaution. I’ll be back from the hospital for dinner. Right, guys?”
There was a course of yeses from the trainers.
Viv sighed as she nodded her head before pressing a kiss to my forehead.
“I’ll see you later, Schatje.”
“Hey,” I said as I reached out and grabbed a hold of her wrist when she went to walk away. I grinded my teeth together at the aching pain that came from my knee at the slight movement. Viv bit her lip at my reaction. “I’m going to fine, okay? Tonight’s about you. I know that Jonas is going to get you on the field, and I know that it isn’t going to be how we planned it with both of us being on the field, but, Viv, you deserve to be back out there. Enjoy that, yeah?”
Viv slowly nodded her head, and I gave her one last small smile before I kissed the back of her hand and let her go.
“No one tells Jonas until after the team has gone out,” I said once Viv was out of hearing range.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“You okay, kid?”
“I’m fine.”
Becky had been the first to call me. I had seen all the texts that my national teammates had sent me, but Becky was the one I had answered first. I was hesitant to text Tobin or Christen back. I knew that they would call me as soon as they knew I was out of the hospital, but I didn’t know how long I would last talking with them on the phone before I broke down.
Tobin and Christen weren’t just my team moms. They were my safety net. They had been the ones I went to when my anxiety about playing started to get to me. They were the ones who had convinced me to finally ask Viv out and they had been there through the hardest times in my life. But this was one of the worst setbacks I had, and it was at the worst time with the Olympics only nine months away.
I didn’t even know how long I would make it before asking Tobin and Christen to fly over to help me out while Viv was away at camp. I knew that they would do it too, but I couldn’t help but feel guilty for even thinking about asking them when they both had so much on their own plates already.
“How bad is it?”
I froze at the question. I, logically, knew that Becky would be the one they’d have call me to get information about my injury since she was our team captain, and we were in between coaches at the moment.
“My ACL is torn,” I admitted. I ran a hand over my face as I stayed in the car that was sitting outside the restaurant. Kim had stuck around to wait for me to get back to London Coloney with a couple of trainers. I had assured her that I was fine and that I just had to call Becky to give her an update so she could tell our national team. “I don’t even know what I’m going to do about surgery. Viv’s supposed to head to her own national camp tomorrow. But the longer I put it off, the longer I’ll have no idea what my timetable to return would look like.”
“Okay, you talk it over with Viv and get a gameplan with the medical staff at Arsenal and keep me updated.”
I knew that would be the next step. I sighed as I looked at the restaurant entrance. I wasn’t going to ruin Viv’s celebration so our talk would have to wait until after dinner. It really was unfortunate that we had to have such a quick turnaround between our game tonight and the national camps that everyone was leaving for tomorrow.
“Hey, Becky?” I called out before she could hang up the phone. “I know the federation wants you to report back to them tonight, but do you think it can wait until tomorrow?”
“Kid, they need to know as soon as possible.”
“I know, but it was Viv’s first game back from her ACL. I didn’t let her know how bad it was when they took me off. I didn’t tell her that I heard the pop,” I explained. Viv deserved to be able to celebrate this without having to worry about me. “I just want her to be able to celebrate finally getting back on the field for a game. I’m going to tell her tonight, but I want to be the one to do it. Not the team breaking the news.”
“Okay, but I call them at eight o’clock tonight,” Becky relented. I nodded in relief even though she couldn’t see me. “That’s like four hours. So, you make sure you tell her before then.”
“I will. I promise.”
We wrapped up our conversation as I made her promise to let the rest of the girls know that I missed all of them and I was upset that I wouldn’t be there to see them but that I trusted that they would win without me.
I took a moment to compose myself before I grabbed the crutches from the back of the car to head into the restaurant. I was slower to get back to the private room where the others already were. I could see the worry in my teammates faces when they saw the crutches. But my eyes met with Viv’s as I ignored our teammates.
Viv’s eyes darted down to the knee that I had hurt as she immediately started to fidget with the rings on her fingers. I started to make my way toward her before I took a seat next to her. Once I had the crutches leaned against the wall that was behind us, I grabbed ahold of her hand.
“It’s fine. Just hyperextended,” I assured her. Viv’s shoulders dropped in relief. “Doc said to get rest and the trainers will reevaluate next week to see how it’s looking. I’ll be back on the field in no time. I promise.”
Viv smiled at that as she gave my hand a tight squeeze. The guilt hit me hard as I watched the worry disappear from Viv’s eyes. I knew it was cruel to give her this false hope, but I didn’t want to ruin this for her.
“Great! That means you’ll be back with us in no time!” Katie cheered. I shook my head as Viv and I both turned to look at her. “Just too bad you won’t be going to national camp now.”
I rolled my eyes. I didn’t need to think about that right now. Especially because it still hadn’t really hit just yet that I was going to be missing out on seeing some of my best friends for the second camp in a row.
“Just wait, McCabe. Once Beth, Viv, and I all get back on the field, it’ll be your spot that I take, and you’ll be the one riding the bench.”
Katie gasped at that before she pretended that I had actually hurt her. I couldn’t help but smile as Viv laughed at Katie.
As our night moved along, I found myself forgetting about the injury I had just sustained and instead lost myself in the celebration. It wasn’t even anything big we did for Viv. We didn’t even focus too much attention on her, but Viv honestly did love being around the rest of the team.
While she hadn’t been completely separated from the team during her injury and rehab, she had missed getting to spend as much time as she was used to with the rest of the team. I had also been careful to limit how much either of us committed to team bonding nights, especially when it was game nights knowing that as much as she pretended to hate the games, Viv was one of the most competitive people I knew, and she would have been upset by the number of games she couldn’t join in.
It was nice to see her enjoying herself with the rest of the team.
Aside from being the newest one on the team to be injured, today was amazing. Even as dinner was winding down and some of our teammates started to make their leave. Katie assuring both Viv and I that she was covering our meals tonight as the president of Viv’s fan club.
Of course, we could only go for so long though before something had to go wrong when our squad was around.
I hadn’t even been paying attention to the Aussies who were messing around next to the table that Viv and I were still sitting at as we both quietly talked to each other. I knew that the two of us would be making our leave soon as Viv was obviously worn out from the day.
I moved to slide out of my seat, but that proved to be the wrong thing to do because as soon as I had turned so that I could maneuver my way to my feet, Kyra had taken off to get away from Caitlin who was trying to chase her. Which meant that both of them collided with my recently injured knee.
I gasped as I tried to hold back the tears while I turned back in my seat to keep it from being ran into again. I was very away of how all of the attention had been turned to me.
The aching pain that I had been able to ignore all night was back and it was ten times worse now. It was so bad that I couldn’t even process the apologies coming from Kyra and Caitlin. Viv was quick to move around the table so that she could be on the side I was trying to get out from as she waited for the pain to subside.
“Did they give you anything for the pain?” Viv asked.
I shook my head before I fished out the prescription from my jacket pocket.
“I have a prescription, but I’ll have to get it from the pharmacy tomorrow.”
Viv took the prescription from me. I was also a bit surprised to find that she had shooed the others away so that we were in the room by ourselves.
“Why would they give you a prescription if you just hyperextended your knee?”
I sighed at the question. I really didn’t want to do this here. I would do it at home, but not here where anyone could hear us.
“(Y/N), they wouldn’t give this to you if you hyperextended your knee. Especially not a prescription for this much,” Viv pointed out. I knew that she had figured it out. Viv looked up at me as I felt my shoulder slump forward. I was already over this injury, and I had only had it for about five hours. “Why would they write you a prescription?”
“Not here, Viv.”
“Yes, here.”
“No. I’m not doing this here,” I said. Viv scoffed as she looked away from me. “We can talk about it as soon as we get home where it’ll be a private talk, but I’m not going to do this in public.”
Viv huffed as she stayed crouched in front of me for a moment before helping me up and situated with my crutches. Our walk outside was a silent one until we actually reached outside. Once we were outside, I found myself saying goodbye to our teammates and assuring both Kyra and Caitlin that I would be fine.
Viv stayed by my side as we made our way to the car. She even helped me get into the car. Something that we had mastered when she tore ACL, but it was a little awkward now. Both of us were used to doing the other’s role.
Viv stayed silent the whole ride back to our apartment. This morning’s playlist to get us both excited about the match we had today was the only thing keeping us from complete silence inside the car.
Even when we got home, Viv stayed quiet. She had gotten both of our bags out without a sound and followed me into the building. Her watching me struggle with the door for a moment before she held it open all the way so that I could get in without having to worry if the door was going to close on me or not. She stayed behind me as we made our way into the building.
I wasn’t sure if she refused to move in front of me just so she wouldn’t have to face me or if it was just because she was afraid that I’d fall and she thought she had a better chance at catching me if she was behind me.
Our trip from the elevator to our apartment took longer than normal as I was getting used to the crutches and couldn’t move as fast as Viv had eventually been able to. But once we were inside of our apartment, I moved to sit on the couch. I was fully prepared to sleep on the couch as well if she was mad enough at me. After all she was the one that would be going to a national camp tomorrow, so she’d need a better rest than me.
“I was going to tell you,” I assured her as she took a seat on the couch once our bags were put up. “I promise I was.”
“And did you plan on telling me before or after I left for camp?”
“I’m not a complete asshole, Viv. I was going to tell you as soon as we got home. But I knew what tonight meant for you. Three hundred and eleven days and you finally got back on the field. You deserved to celebrate with your friends. I wasn’t just going to let you skip that to baby me when I’m fine.”
“You tore your ACL! I don’t think you get what that’s like! Take it from some‒”
“I know! I know,” I cut her off. I couldn’t stop the tears that were threatening to fall as it was all finally catching up to me. “I’ll be out for at least six months, but it will more than likely be closer to nine before I can get on the field again. I’ll probably miss the Olympics because if it takes me nine months to come back then there’s no way I’ll be in form to go to the Olympics. And I’ll probably have more bad days than good ones.”
“When are you having surgery?”
“I don’t know, Viv. It just happened tonight. I’ll probably go talk to the team medics and a doctor tomorrow to figure out a plan.”
“I’ll call Jonker and let him know that I won’t be at camp.”
“No. No!” I moved forward to snatch her phone away from her. Viv tried to reach for it, but I moved back as far as I could. “You’re not doing that! You’re going to camp. I’m not letting you ruin everything you’ve worked for because of me.”
“You were there for me! Why can’t I be there for you?”
“I’m not saying that you can’t be. But you’re not putting your own career on hold because I have to have a surgery.”
“Then what about while I’m gone? It a lot harder to take care of yourself when you’re on crutches than you think.”
I sighed as I pinched the bridge of my nose. We were getting nowhere with this.
“Beth and Leah and Laura are all still going to be here. None of them were called up,” I pointed out. I hadn’t really thought about asking any of them if they’d be okay to help me out. “I can always ask them to help me. I’m sure that Tobin or Christen wouldn’t mind flying over to help me out for a couple of days.”
“I want to be able to take care of you like you took care of me,” Viv admitted as she moved closer to me. I sighed as I threaded a hand in her hair. “It’s scary and I would have never gotten through my own injury without you. I want us to be able to play together again and that means that you’ve got to get through this, but it’s hard and so emotionally draining.”
“And you are the one that’s going to get me through it,” I said. Viv perked up a little at that. “But I’m not going to let you sacrifice your own career because of mine. Especially not when you just got yours back. So, you’re going to camp.”
“But what about your surgery?”
I sighed as I moved my hand to play with the baby hairs at the nape of her neck. It knew that Viv always calmed down when I did that.
“I’ll wait to schedule it until you’re back from camp. And I’ll make sure that it won’t clash with the Manchester City game,” I assured Viv. Viv sighed before nodding in agreement. “Besides, between the girls who weren’t called up and our medical team, I’ll be well taken care of while you’re gone. And I’ll be sure to talk to you every day.”
“And if it ever feels like you’re drowning, you’ll tell me so that I can be there to pull you up like you did for me, right?”
“Right.”
Let’s Take A Break - Vivianne Miedema
prompt: R and Vivianne both deserve a break.
warnings: none
words: 647
Tumblr media
(Y/N) POV
“Here me out,” I said as I laid on the couch. Viv looked over at me. “What if we both took a break?”
“A break? Like in our relationship?” Viv asked.
I immediately shook my head. I guess it did come out wrong.
“No, no,” I denied. “I mean what if we take a break from club and national duties for a few weeks?”
Viv furrowed her brow in confusion. I knew that this was probably coming out of the blue, but we both had pretty much been going non stop between club and national team duties since the Olympics. We both could use a break.
“We request the break and just spend time together. Maybe go see our families,” I suggested. I shrugged as she joined me on the couch. “Its been non stop for both of us. We could both just rest our legs and mentally reset, you know? I mean, I was forgettable during those last two friendlies against England and Spain.”
“I think that would be a good idea,” Viv nodded.
“I’ll talk to Jonas about it tomorrow. I don’t want you to have to worry about it,” I assured her. Viv smiled as she leaned over to kiss me. “However, you have to talk to Jonker yourself. I’ll give Vlatko a call tomorrow.”
“How many weeks?”
“3 or 4?” I suggested. Viv gave me a small nod. “I’ll ask Jonas how long we’ll be able to take.”
“We could go see your parents,” Viv suggested.
I pulled her closer to me as I pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
“We can also go visit your family too.”
“I would really like that.”
“Then, how about after practice tomorrow, we make plans to go and visit?”
“You’ve got a deal. So long as we can have a week to ourselves as well,” Viv said.
I grinned at her and nodded at that. It sounded like a great plan. I knew it was something we both deserved too.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So, Jonas said that we could get 3 weeks off if we did join practice the last week,” I said as I sat down at the table next to Viv to look at plans.
“How about we to the States first, that way we can get over most of the jet lag while we are visiting my family?” Viv suggested. I nodded at that. “You gonna let your parents know today?”
“Yeah,” I nodded. I knew that they probably wouldn’t be able to spend that much time with us. “Jonas said it would be announced on November 2nd but that we would be free to leave after the West Ham game. I also called Vlatko to let him know that I would be declining to join so that I could rest and recharge to get my body right during the November camp.”
“I also got a leave approved from Jonker,” Viv said. I grinned at that. “So we could leave on the 1st to go visit your parents.”
“We could fly out on the 8th to go to see your family” I said as Viv looked over at me. “And then fly back here on the 15th? Jonas is definitely gonna want us back for the Juventus game.”
“It sounds like a plan to me,” Viv said. I pressed a kiss to her temple at that. “Anything else you wanna do?”
“I would like to go on a hike,” I said. Viv groaned at that and I chuckled. “It doesn’t have to be long, but I would like for us to get out and go on a hike.”
“Only for you.”
I grinned at that because I really did enjoy hiking, but I knew that Viv didn’t care for it.
“Is there anything you would like to do?” I asked her.
“Just spend time with my girlfriend.”
“I think that can be arranged.”

Not Like My Mama! | Viviannne Miedema x Wife!Reader
synopsis: a glimpse of Ducky at her football lessons.
warnings: nothing. just pure fluff
word count: 1.0k
————————————
Viv tugs on the laces of the red and white football boots to make sure they’re secure. She had a strict ritual whenever she tied her boots. She would start by aligning her laces, laying them out flat, ensuring there are no twists. This step is essential to her; any sign of imperfection can unsettle her focus.
Viv would always start with her left boot first. She would pulls the laces tight, securing the boot with exactly three knots. The first knot is a standard criss-cross, pulled tightly. The second knot is a loop, ensuring a firm hold. The final knot is a smaller, tight finish, securing the previous loops. To the Arsenal striker, each knot symbolizes control, strength, and precision.
But the owner of the little boots she was tying did not care about control, strength, or precision. All she probably cared about was running after the ball, scoring a goal or two, and maybe getting an ice-cream after practice.
“There you go, Ducky!” Viv pats the little boot before smiling at her little footballer. Her daughter was repeatedly glancing over at the pitch to find her friends, clearly eager to join them. Just like her Mama, Evelyn loved football, and she looked forward to all her weekly lessons where she got to wear her special boots.
When she notices her slightly distracted daughter, Viv gently palms her cherubic face towards her, chuckling when her daughter whines lowly. “Hey. Look at Mama for a second. I have to go to work soon
”
“Quick, Mama. Ducky go play football!” Evie points a chubby finger at where the rest of her teammates are gathering, shouts of glee and excitement filling the park. Viv can see her wiggling her feet into her tiny football boots in anticipation.
“Okay, okay” Viv admonishes lightly, brushing a hand over her daughter’s hair. Her wife usually did Evelyn’s hair– from pigtails and braids– she was far more skilled than Viv at that department. By some miracle, she had someone managed to tame the little girl’s curls into two, even-ish, pigtails– her preferred hairstyle today. She also managed to attach the little ribbon clips that are the same colours as Evie’s football kit to complete the look. Viv is grateful her daughter did not ask for braids otherwise there would’ve been a meltdown that morning. “Right. Have fun then, Ducky! Mama has to go to work, but Mummy will be here”
Evie perks up slightly, already knowing that she’ll be allowed to run over and join her friends in a bit. “Ducky go now!”
Viv pulls the very excited toddler into her arms for one last squeeze, raining a few kisses all over her face, and revelling in the sweet giggles she gets in return. With one last kiss to her forehead, Viv stands up on her feet and watches her daughter run onto the pitch and greet her teammates. She turns to you, coming back from buying yourself a drink and a pastry from one of the stalls, and gives you one sweet kiss. You exchange goodbyes and promises to make plans for dinner tonight, and then you watch her walk to towards the carpark.
————————————
The coach gently rolls a ball towards Evelyn. With determination written all over her face, she takes a few wobbly steps forward and swings her foot at the ball. She misses on the first try but quickly tries again, and this time, she makes contact. The ball rolls a few feet away, and her face lights up. She runs after the ball, her pigtails and ribbons bouncing wildly with each step.
For the next half hour, Evelyn is in her element. She chases the ball, giggles with her friends, and even scores her very first goal. You watch your daughter from the sidelines with a proud smile on your face.
Your little footballer, and your wife's mini me
During a water break, Evie is approached by a new teammate. Evie has never seen the girl before, so she reckons she must be new.
“My Mama’s good at football” Evie turns to the new girl when she speaks to her. Evie learned earlier that her name is Ashley and she had just moved from up north but Evie doesn’t remember the name of the town.
“Really?”
“Mmmhmm. She can kick reeeeally far. Like all the way to the Moon!” Evie tilts her head at that. That sounds very far, but her Mama could probably kick it father than that. “but we only play in the garden when she’s not at the hospital working”
Evelyn makes a noncommittal hum, not disagreeing necessarily but not agreeing either “Hmm. So can my Mama”
“There’s Mummy” Evie points you out amongst the group of other parents. With your sunglasses onto of your head, you were wearing a bright coloured t-shirt so your daughter can easily spot you amongst the crowd. You were chatting with the other parents, but your eyes scanning the pitch, keeping an eye out for her. “But Mama is at work”
“Oh. Just like my Mama! But my Daddy is there” Ashley points to a man who is sitting on one of the benches, chatting to someone else’s parent. “Where’s your Mama?”
“Playing football
” Evie stares at her football boots on her feet. They were red and white and given to her by Auntie Leah. She said she bought them because they were Arsenal colours.
“Oh! My Mama plays football too! Just like your Mama!”
“My Mama plays football.” Evie emphasis. Turning her head to find you again, partly for reassurance, and also because she was getting slightly angsty because of her new friend. When you catch her eye, you give her a quick wave from where you were seated, pausing your conversation to focus all your attention on your daughter. When she gives you a quick wave back and turns to her friend, you figured all was fine. “My Mama plays for Arsenal"
Evie looks back at Ashley when she begins to speak again. “Just like Mama! My Mama likes Arsenal too! She likes the colour red very much”
“No.” Evie stomps her red and white boot once, flattening the grass beneath her boots. She narrows her eyes slightly at her new friend. She didn’t like Ashely anymore. She didn’t get it, she didn’t understand.
“Not like My Mama. My Mama is Vivianne Miedema”

(Y/N) POV
“You ready?” Lisa asked looking back at me from the front seat. I sighed but nodded. “(Y/N), you don’t have to. We can take you back home.”
“You’ll be late for practice.”
“(Y/N), we don’t care about being late to practice,” Viv said looking back at me. She reached back and put a hand on my knee. “We want you to be comfortable. If you don’t wanna do this, you don’t have to. It’s okay if you don’t want to meet our teammates just yet.”
“No, I wanna,” I shook my head. I was going to meet them even if it scared me.
“Okay,” Lisa smiled.
The two of them got out of the car before I did. It wasn’t until Viv opened the back door and held a hand out to me that I got out. Viv wrapped her arm around my shoulders as we headed into the training center. Lisa and Viv had both assured me that no one else should be in the training center as everyone should already be out on the field practicing.
It still didn’t settle my nerves because I knew that I would have to meet all of them. I furrowed my brow in confusion when I saw an extra jersey and shorts in the locker next to Viv’s. I turned to Lisa and Viv for an explanation, but I barely managed to catch the kit bag that Lisa threw at me.
“You didn’t think we were gonna bring you to practice with us just to have you sit on the sidelines, did you?” Lisa asked. Viv laughed at my surprised face before pushing me toward the locker. I grinned at the jersey once I saw the number. “Come on, (Y/N). We don’t have all day.”
I quickly changed to get out to the field, but also so that Lisa and Viv wouldn’t have long to stare at the scars on my back. I reached into the back to pull out my boots but froze when I saw them.
“You guys got me new boots?” I asked looking at Viv and Lisa. I knew that I had needed a new pair but I didn’t expect Viv and Lisa to get me a pair. Viv sent me a small smile before she nodded. “Why?”
“Because you needed a new pair,” Viv softly said. I looked down, but Viv immediately put her hand under my chin. Viv gently lifted my chin so that I was looking at her. “We care about you, (Y/N). I know the past 14 years of your life weren’t the best, but we want to make sure that you know that we love you. If you need anything, you can tell us, okay?”
I gave her a smile as I nodded. Viv sent me a smile back before she moved closer to Lisa to talk with her. The two of them talk with each other as I put the boots on. Once I stood up, they both threw an arm over my shoulder as they led me to the field.
However, once we got onto the field they both ended up having to go the opposite way as me since they were both training with the forwards and they had told me that I would be joining the defenders. I jogged to join the defenders  but I sent Lisa and Viv a small smile once I reached the group of defenders. I kept my head down and stayed quiet for most of the practice.
“You ever played with a club before?”
I looked up to the defender that was talking to me. I was surprised because I didn’t think that Leah Williamson would actually talk to me. I thought that she was one of the best defenders in the game.
“No.”
“Got a favorite club then?” Leah asked. I shrugged. I never really got to watch a lot of football. I guess if I had to pick one it’d be Arsenal because of Viv and Lisa. “Oh, come on. You’ve got to have a favorite club.”
“Oi, come off it, Leah,” the different accented voice rang out behind me. I felt someone put a hand on my shoulder. “The girl doesn’t have a favorite club, let her live.”
I ducked my head before I rubbed the back of my neck. Leah sent me a small smile but nodded.
“Arsenal’s the best, (Y/N),” she sent me a wink.
I looked at the person whose hand was still on my shoulder. I gave the Australian a small smile before jogging off. I couldn’t help but notice as Lisa got closer to Steph and they said something to each other before glancing at me. I ducked my head down but after a moment I looked back up to see Steph nodding her head. I furrowed my brow but my name was called causing me to turn my attention back to the drill that I was about to start.
We had kept going through drills and I noticed that Steph stayed pretty close to me throughout it. Normally, my anxiety would have been through the roof, but she wasn’t pushing me. Steph was mostly just making jokes around me and it helped keep me calm.
“You know, you could play for the club,” Steph said beside me. I looked at her as I took a drink from my water. I didn’t believe her. I had only ever played in the park. “I’m serious, (Y/N). Your moms told me that you’ve only ever played in pickup games, but you’ve got real skill.”
“I couldn’t do that to them,” I softly said looking at where Viv and Lisa were. “I’d be bad at it and then they would just waste time and effort on me. And if that happens-”
“Hey, you can’t think like that,” Steph said. I sighed as I looked down at the ground. I knew that Viv and Lisa cared about me, but I was just waiting for the moment that I would mess up and they wouldn’t want me anymore. “Kid, I know I’m just getting to meet you, but I can already tell that your moms love you so much. They would never think that they were wasting time or effort on you, trust me.”
“You think I should?”
“Yeah, definitely,” the Australian smiled at me. She nudged me with her elbow. “I’ll even help you prepare. Now come on. It’s time you actually meet the rest of the team.”

(Y/N) POV
I kept my eyes on Viv as we warmed up. I couldn’t help it. Not only was Viv beautiful, but she played the game in such a way that drew everyone’s attention.
“You should ask her out,” a voice softly said behind me. I glanced behind me to see Lisa standing behind me.
I was a little surprised that she had said that. I knew that the two had broken up recently, but none of us really knew why. I figured that Daan and Jill might since they were close to Viv as they all played on the same national team. I knew that Lisa was in love with Viv though.
“You’re in love with her,” I pointed out.
“I am,” Lisa nodded. We both watched Viv as she dribbled the ball. “She loves me, but she isn’t in love with me anymore. I have to accept that she’s changed and fell out of love with me. Ask her out.”
“She probably doesn’t want another relationship yet.”
“(Y/N), I’m telling you, ask her out,” Lisa said. I turned back to look at Lisa.
“Am I the reason for you two breaking up?” I asked. I watched Lisa’s face for any indication that I was right.
“No, you weren’t,” Lisa sighed. She looked at me before nodding to Viv. “You had nothing to do with Viv falling out of love with me. But, I do know that she likes you a lot.”
I was still skeptical. I knew what people would think if Viv and I started to date out of the blue. Especially with it being right after Lisa and Viv broke up. And then I would also have to deal with all the teasing I would get from my national teammates. I was surprised when Lisa reached out and grabbed ahold of Jill’s arm.
“Please tell (Y/N) to ask Viv out because we both know that Viv will never ask her out,” Lisa said.
I watched as Lisa took off to warm up. I turned my attention to Jill to see what she had to say. I knew that Jill had to have a good idea because she was close to Viv.
“She’s right,” Jill shrugged causing me to groan. “Viv really likes you. You should ask her out.”
“You’re supposed to tell me that Lisa was wrong and I shouldn’t ask Viv out.”
“It’s not the truth. Viv likes you, a lot,” Jill admitted. I looked away from Jill and back to Viv. Viv gave me a smile when she caught me staring. I couldn’t help but smile back at her. “Seriously, (Y/N), you would treat her right. And you would be great for Viv.”
“I don’t know, Jill.”
“I’ll make you a bet,” Jill said. She nodded to Viv and I looked at her. “If she has an amazing game, you have to ask her out.”
“That’s not fair,” I cried out. Jill was already shaking her head. “Viv always has good games.”
“Fine, if Viv scores more than two goals, you ask her out,” Jill amended.
“You’re not gonna let me say no, are you?” I asked. Jill shook her head and I sighed. “All right. If Viv scores more than two goals, I’ll ask her out.”
“Great!” Jill beamed at me. I shook my head as she ran off. I sighed and continued to warm up.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I crossed the ball to Viv and she took the shot. I was immediately running toward Viv and picked her up as we cheered once the ball hit the back of the net. Once I let her down, Jill congratulated Viv before walking by my side.
“That’s a hat-trick,” Jill pointed out. I knew that she was right. I also knew what that meant. “You gonna ask her out tonight?”
“Yeah, we’ll see.”
“You have to do it, (Y/N),” Jill said as she gave me a slight nudge. “You made a bet.”
“I know.”
We got set back up and went back to playing. And it was no surprise that Viv ended up with 6 goals and 4 assists when Joe subbed her off. Our final score was 11-1 against Bristol City. I waited for Viv as she completed the post-game interview.
“What a game for Viv, right?” Jill asked me as she walked past me.
I shook my head at her but I could feel my face heat up some. However, I still stood waiting for Viv to finish her interview. Viv smiled when she saw me waiting for her. She wrapped up the interview before joining my side. I smiled at her.
“You didn’t have to wait for me,” Viv said.
“I wanted to,” I shrugged. I gave her a smile and she gave me one back. “Actually, I wanted to get your opinion on something.”
“Yeah, sure,” Viv nodded. I tried to hype myself up to actually ask her. “Did you want me to look at apartments with you? I know that you’ve been looking for a new one, I can help if you want.”
“No, that’s not what I was going to ask,” I shook my head. It might be nice to have Viv go with me though. “I mean, yeah, you can join me, but that’s not what I wanted to ask. Do you wanna go on a date with me?”
Viv stopped causing me to stop as well. I turned to look at her and Viv looked a little confused. I rubbed the back of my neck.
“I get it if it’s too soon for you,” I said. I knew that Viv wouldn’t want to go on a date with me. “I just kind of made a bet with Jill that I would at least man up and ask you if you had a great game. Which you did, like always.”
“Jill set you up to this?”
“Well, yeah, but only cause she knows that I have a crush on you,” I said. My eyes widened when I realized what I had said. I ducked my head so that Viv couldn’t see my face heating up. “Sorry, I just know that Jill wouldn’t leave me alone if I didn’t ask you.”
“Hey, no,” Viv said as she put her hand under my chin and caused me to look up at her. “I’d love to go on a date with you.”
“You would?”
“Yeah,” Viv nodded before she grabbed my hand to drag me toward the locker rooms. “Take a shower and get changed. We can talk more about our date while everyone else gets drunk as they celebrate.”
(Y/N) POV
The final whistle blew and I turned to where everyone else was running onto the field. Kelley and Alex were the first ones to hug me. I made sure to hug my teammates before turning to look for the Netherland players. I spotted Dan first and made my way over to her.
“You did good, (Y/N),” Dan hugged me. I wrapped my arms around her. “I know I’m not the person you want to be hugging though.”
“Hey, we’re going to be watching for you guys next year in the Olympics,” I admitted as I let go of Dan. Dan shook her head at me and I felt another body collide with me.
“I should have stopped your goal,” Sari’s voice said.
“Good luck with that,” I chuckled as I turned to her. “I don’t think anyone’s stopped a shot when I use the outside of my foot.”
Sari shook her head as she looked at where my team was celebrating already. I glanced over my shoulder to see what they were doing. It was obvious that they were all pumped to get the win. I knew that I would probably join their stupid antics.
“You better be careful tonight,” Dominique said. “It won’t be good for Arsenal if you get hurt cause you were celebrating.”
“You aren’t even playing with Arsenal this season,” I said. I rolled my eyes at that because I hadn’t joined them since the end of our season. “Besides, I have until the end of the NWSL season before my loan ends and I go back.”
The girls shook their heads at me and I caught sight of Viv who was wiping her tears away. I sighed because I wasn’t sure if she would want to see me right now or not. Viv looked toward us before opening her arms. I smiled and ran toward her. I jumped into her arms as I hugged her.
“I’m proud of you, (Y/N). You guys deserved the win,” Viv said. I hugged her tighter because I knew that it couldn’t have been easy on her. “My girlfriend is a World Cup Champion.”
“Viv, you guys played amazing too,” I pointed out. I didn’t want Viv to lose confidence in herself, but I doubted that she would. “If there was anyone who I would have thought would beat us, it would have been you guys. I’m proud of you as well. You did amazing.”
I let go of Viv as she lowered me to the ground. I smiled at her and wiped the tears away. I looked over to see what my team was doing and some of them were searching for me.
“If you want to, I’d like for you to go to the party,” I turned back to look at Vivi. She had a frown on her face. “If you want to go to your room and sleep, I understand. If you feel up to it, I’d like for you to be my date to the party that we will have. I can text you the address. You can bring the girls from your team if you’d like.”
“(Y/N)! (Y/N), come on! It’s time to party,” Kelley called out.
“I’ll ask about how they feel,” Viv said. I smiled at her. “I’ll let you know if we show or not.”
Kelley was getting closer to where we were. I really just wanted to spend some time with Viv. We hadn’t gotten to see each other in person a lot since I had gone on loan to Portland and we were playing in the World Cup.
“Can I kiss you?”
I waited for Viv’s nod because we hadn’t mentioned a lot about taking our relationship public yet. I had to pull Viv down some so I could kiss her, but I got lost in the kiss for a minute. At least until I heard my teams cat-calling us. Viv pulled back and glanced at my teammates over my shoulder before kissing my forehead.
“I’ll definitely call you later,” Viv assured me. I nodded and turned to my teammates when Viv went to join her team. I swatted at my teammates before joining them for drinks. We celebrated in the locker room after receiving our medals and individual awards.
I couldn’t help but join in as I continued to drink. I knew that Ash was probably putting all of this onto Instagram. I was sure that Vivianne would scold me, but I couldn’t care at the moment. We had won the World Cup.
The bus ride back to the hotel was loud and music played as we drunk even more alcohol. When we got back to the hotel, I was definitely drunk as I was starting to tell my teammates about my relationship with Viv even though I wanted to wait for her to be there with me. I didn’t take long to get changed and showered after I got up to my room. I sobered up enough from my shower to send Vivianne a text letting her know where we would be going.
I waited for Kelley to get out of the shower before we headed back out. Within minutes of getting to the bar, we were already back to drinking. I was on top of the bar when I saw a familiar face walking into the bar.
“Hey, babe!” I cheered causing Viv to look at me. She laughed at me as she headed toward me. I watched as Dan, Sari, Dominique, Jill, and Lieke followed Vivianne to where I was. They were laughing at me before Viv pulled me down off of the bar.
“You are so drunk,” Viv laughed. I grinned as the others behind her shook their heads. “You are going to hurt in the morning.”
“Hell no, she won’t!” Kelley threw her arm around my shoulders. “(Y/N)’s gonna be Frat Daddy III. The party never stops for us.”
I grinned at that statement. I grabbed the drink that Kelley was offering to me and downed it. Dan had pulled her phone out and I was sure that I would find videos of me on her Instagram tomorrow as well.
“(Y/N)’s girlfriend is here!” My own team crowded around us at Sonnett’s announcement. The others I refused to let Viv out my reach, however. “Introduce us, (Y/N). Come on, you never told us that you had a girlfriend.”
“That’s because Viv and I only got together in December,” I shrugged. “We haven’t exactly been together that long.”
“It’s been seven months, (Y/N),” Christen pointed out.
I couldn’t believe that Viv and I had actually been together that long. I furrowed my brow in confusion because I didn’t think it had been that long. I tended to be good with dates.
“Has it been seven months?”
“On the 18th,” Viv nodded. I rubbed my forehead and groaned. “I don’t expect you to remember that right now, (Y/N). You’re drunk.”
“Ooohh, (Y/N)’s in trouble,” Mal poked at my arm. I swatted at the forward. Dan laughed.
“You should have seen how awkward they were when they finally admitted that they liked each other,” Dan said. I shook my head because it really had been one of the most awkward moments of my life. We hadn’t told each other how we felt until we won the FA WSL Cup. “You could cut the tension with a knife!”
“Shut up, Dan,” Viv hissed. I stumbled to cover Dan’s mouth.
“We don’t need to get into that,” I muttered.”
Dan laughed before pushing me off of her. Dan kept telling embarrassing stories that she had of Viv and me. I had moved to sit at a booth with Viv. I pulled myself closer to her. I couldn’t help but continuing the party as Viv took care of me.
“I love you,” I smiled at Viv. Viv shook her head at me.
“You’re drunk.”
“No, seriously, Viv, I love you. I can’t believe it took me so long to tell you that I had feelings for you,” I admitted. Viv looked down before I pushed her hair behind her ear. “I’m pretty sure that it was liquid courage that allowed me to finally tell you how I felt about you the first time. Now it’s letting me tell you that I love you.”
“Well, you better not need to be drunk if you’re the one who proposes,” Viv teased. I smiled at her because I was sure that I wasn’t. “And... I love you, too.”
