#MovieoftheDay: Richard (1972) Movies I Want to See: 30/50 Whereas many of the films I've recently profiled are unjustly or inexplicably obscure, here's a film whose obscurity seems reasonable, even if it may merit rediscovery, at least by the excavators of cinema's bowels. Here's a satire on Richard Nixon, directed by Harry Hurwitz, whose film The Projectionist was one of my previous entries. Notably, it predates the revelation of Watergate, making it a fairly rare (especially for the time) satire of a sitting president. The premise, as per Wikipedia: "In order to earn his wings, a Guardian Angel (Mickey Rooney) comes down from heaven to train Richard (Nixon impersonator Richard M. Dixon) to be President of the United States. He wins the 1968 Presidential Election which was, in reality, sponsored by a group of Irishmen on a bet." Sounds interesting—though I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't aged well—but for all sorts of reasons, including my general fascination with Nixon, I'd like to see it. Unfortunately, it has never been released to home video, nor is it available online as far as I can tell.
