The dimly lit casino hummed with chatter and the clinking of coins, but all you could hear was the pounding of your own heart as you stared at the table in front of you. The air was thick with smoke and the nauseating sound of mock laughter, a fitting backdrop for your loss. Across the table, Taiga leaned back, eyeing you with boredom. His signature, cocky grin was too overwhelming for you to look at. All you could focus on was his hands, or rather, what was in them.

“Looks like luck ran out on you.” His voice carried that insufferable lilt. Mocking, teasing; he had seen this all before. You were nothing new to him.

You stared at the cards in anger, jaw tightening at how reckless you were being tonight. Every bit of anger, every ounce of frustration, every unresolved emotion from your falling out with Leo that night pounded inside you like lightning hitting the ground. You had come here to drown out your emotions and let the high of gambling override the bitter taste in your mouth. Instead of numbing the ache, the loss made it burn even more.

Taiga chuckled as he raked in the last of your winnings, his movements slow. He was taunting you. Of course he was. What kind of idiot gambles everything they have against him?

Your body moved before you could really think.

With a harsh kick, the table flew aside, sending cards and coins scattering to the floor. Gasps and mutters rose from the crowd, but they didn't matter. All that mattered was the man in front of you. His surprised chuckle was cut short as you pounced at him.

The weight of your knife pressed against his throat, your knee between his as you pinned him to the floor. Where did she get that? How did she get it in?

For the first time since the game began, no, since you walked in, his smirk faltered. Instead of feeling the fear anyone else would have with a knife to their throat, genuine amusement took over his features. His eyes were wide with something dangerously close to delight.

“Feisty,” his voice just as smooth as it was the minutes before, though you could hear him holding back a chuckle. “Didn’t think you had it in you.”

Your grip on the knife tightened. “Shut up.”

That look of intrigue on his face didn’t waver a bit. Even an incredibly angry girl with nothing to lose holding a knife to his throat wasn't enough to scare him.

Your teeth clenched, and your fingers pressed the blade harder against his throat. A thin line of red ran down his skin. He didn’t flinch. Didn’t squirm. He just watched you as he would a card he was eager to place down.

“What are you really trying to win here?” he asked, voice infuriatingly calm. “Revenge? Control? A way to get rid of that anger?” His grin inched itself back to his lips. “If you wanted to gamble your rage away, you should’ve picked a game you could actually win.”

Crack.

You could've sworn that was your own anger manifesting into a sound, until you felt as the handle of your knife trembled in your grip. The previously sharp edge fracturing under the sheer force you had against it. Another crack splintered through the steel, and then—

The knife shattered.

Shards of metal fell onto Taiga’s chest, along with the blood dripping from your fresh wound. Your hand still held what remained of the knife even as it bled onto Taiga’s chest.

The silence was suffocating. You stayed on top of Taiga, letting your blood pool into his chest and absorb into his shirt.

Taiga let out the breath he didn't know he was holding as he stared at the fragments of your knife and blood on his chest. A low, long whistle left his lips.

“Well, that was unexpected.”

Your heart pounded, but it wasn’t just from anger. The pain in your hand ricocheted throughout your entire body. You couldn't help but stare at how your once smooth hand was split open and bleeding out, even though you didn't want to. It was a disturbing sight.

You stumbled to your feet, almost running into the table you kicked onto the ground earlier. The events of tonight running through your head made it hard to breathe. Losing Leo, losing to Taiga, making a fool of yourself in front of so many people. You couldn't hear yourself, but you could feel the sharp breaths you were taking. Goddammit, now you're hyperventilating in front of an entire casino worth of people? The crowd had fallen deathly silent, and you were hyper aware of their stares. You look down at the man you were just on top of, still lying there, still watching you, still grinning as if you were the best thing he’d ever gambled on.

Your blood dripped onto the floor, leaving another puddle.

You turned as fast as you could, pushing through the onlookers and the door, your head still spinning. You couldn't see properly, but you needed to get out. Now.

Behind you, Taiga sat up, running a finger along his barely scratched throat, and then smearing the blood onto his own hands. His mouth was open in awe.

“Now that,” he whispered to himself, “was one hell of a bet.”

As you left and disappeared into the dark night of Tokyo, leaving behind your broken knife, he hoped you would come back to play another game just as interesting.

DIOGO

😭 CRYING - what makes them cry? do they cry easily?

He used to be a big crybaby and often got the sniffles over any little thing LOL but once again he changed and is "tougher" now. It's pretty hard to get him to cry these days, at least, in public anyways. Behind closed doors he tends to break down, or when he gets one of his infamous nightmares. (Which aren't the nightmares WE know cuz. robot but i won't get into that).

At heart he's still quite the crybaby to this day, even if he puts on a brave face.

☕️ HOT BEVERAGE - do they prefer hot or cold drinks? what is their favourite drink?

He gets SPECIAL robot rights and can actually consume food and drink but it’s not necessary KGNHKGH but he does prefer hot drinks! While it’s not rly needed he’s in a habit of making coffee for himself every morning or stopping by a coffee shop for it.

So yea I’d say his favorite drink is coffee made to his exact specifications.  Which is well.  Imagine a rly sweet and pretentious rich boy order and that’s his

🎁 PRESENT - what types of presents would they be most happy to receive? are they good at gift giving?

Contrary to what he acts like, he’s genuinely happy to rly receive any gift- as long as it’s from someone he knows and actually likes.  Most of his apartment is decorated in this his partner brought back for him so HNGKHGH

However as for specifics, he really likes getting new crystals or geodes for his rock collection! Those make him very excited and you’ll probably get an accompanied ramble about the rock you gave him GKNHGKH Secondly he really likes plushes and soft things of that nature, little collectables, especially unicorn or cat themed ones.  (Whatever the squishmallow equivalent is in this universe, he loves it)  His bed is littered in them LOL

As for gift giving he’s really good at it! Very perceptive of what other people want/need and keeps it in mind when looking.  He doesn’t rly care about price as long as he’s sure the other person will love it, and spends a LOT of time picking out smth perfect.

OPAL

👪 FAMILY - what is their family like? what is your ocs relationship to them? does your oc have any siblings?

Opal doesn’t have any siblings, but their family is closely interconnected to his cousin’s Vivi! They basically grew up together cuz their families lived really close together but the two...never really got along.  Well, Vivi thought she did but it was more she kinda jokingly bullied Opal a lot in that kid kind of way w/o really realizing he didn’t think it was funny and he got rly tired of it.  They’re still in communication but Opal doesn’t really like it when she visits and often tries to avoid her as much as he can.  She’s just.  A lot.  They had their moments though and Opal DOES care about her and has gotten better at telling her to Not Do That, but she’s still...a lot.  And tiring.  And-

He doesn’t rly talk to his parents much anymore, they didn’t have the greatest relationship and they often passed him off to his aunt and uncle.  So a part of him was jealous Vivi’s parents were better than his, cuz his were...not great!  They were mostly just absent and didn’t really care to give him attention besides an idle sentence before going back to what they were doing.  Which made Opal a pretty lonely kid :[ So bc of that there’s not rly a relationship between them at all, Opal saved up his money and moved away and that was that.  He has no interest trying to communicate with them again.

💤 SLEEPING - do they fall asleep easily? what helps them sleep?

He has insomnia so it’s pretty hard for him to fall asleep, but usually once he is he’s like a rock.  Unless he gets a nightmare which then he’ll wake back up and not Want to go back to sleep.

Opal is on medication for it though! Since it’s smth that he’s struggled with for a long time, but he only got medicated fairly recently after an incident at his old workplace before he changed jobs.  Though outside of that, cuddling a plush or his partner helps a lot GKHNGKH or just being wrapped up tight in a blanket, just feeling comforted in some fashion helps him get to sleep.  Also playing soft music in the background to give his mind something to focus on besides his own thoughts.

🌱 SEEDLING - what is their most vivid memory from childhood?

When he changed his name! It was pretty big to him and it was when he was pretty young, only really realizing he can call himself WHATEVER he WANTED cuz his friend (Wally) did that sort of stuff and opened his eyes to it GKHNGKH

What rly sticks out is that he told his best friend Wally first abt his name, picking Opulence bc it’s a really pretty word in his mind and also what he DESERVES.  Granted they were rly young and Wally kind of struggled saying it and shorted it to Opal instead, giving Opal his current nickname that most tend to use.

It was one of the happiest moments for him in his childhood so he remembers it quite fondly.

There’s also a moment w/his cousin Vivi that he still gets nightmares abt and gave him a phobia of spiders. But he chooses not to think about that too much <3

Opal can be ... pretty loud honestly LOL Incredibly boastful and proud you’ll know when they’re around cuz they don’t really. Shut Up. KGNHGKH but as for speaking they use a pretty long-winded manner of speaking and ramble quite often, usually boasting or using some other theatrics in their speech.  Though they also don’t use contractions!  They think they sound more dignified that way.  Honestly they speak they way they do to sound smarter but they just sound Really Annoying.

i made. so many. actually 😭 i’ll talk about my newest even though they’re not very well defined yet, but i’m liking the direction i’m going with them!! so they’re a she/they dragon rider ace legend who doesn’t have a name yet cause i’m picky when it comes to names yikes! they have really bright red hair and the worst sense of humour ever, they just laugh at the stupidest things and make THE worst puns you could think of ksjdhsd but! somehow they end up meeting this really cute and grumpy lesbian who plays [ not quidditch but it involves a flying made-up sport so let’s say quidditch kjsdh ] . i’m not yet sure whether to make them enemies to lovers or friends to lovers, but they’re definitely the “cinnamon roll & grumpy one” trope lmao and! they’re both super badass and i’m pretty sure i’d have massive crushes on both of them if they were real 🤔 we shall see what will happen next,, if i ever decide to write again

part one of my first meetings series

The golden glow of Sinostra's casino coated the room in a warm and intoxicating haze. Laughter bubbled through the air like a glass of champagne, the sharp clink of chips hitting against each other was a sweet symphony of risk and danger. In the center of it all, like a king on his gilded throne, sat Taiga Hoshibami, grinning ear to ear.

The last card had been dealt, the final chip had fallen, and you had lost. Sure, you lost fair and square, but you were convinced he did something. This is Taiga Hoshibami, of course he did something, right?

Oh but he had warned you, hadn’t he? That taking him on in a gamble was like signing a contract with the devil. Yet here you were, empty pockets and pride burning deeper than the red on your cheeks, while he twirled a fresh set of winnings between his fingers.

“Ahhh,” he sighed, stretching back in his chair, eyes pooling with mischief. “You put up a good fight. Almost had me on the ropes for a second. Almost.”

That last word burned more than the loss itself.

Your knife was out before you even thought about it. One swift motion of your foot and the table between you was kicked to the side, cards scattering like fallen leaves as you knocked him flat onto the velvet carpet.

Taiga barely had time to blink before cool steel was kissing the skin of his throat.

But despite the knife to his throat, he laughed.

“Whoa, whoa..” His voice was a purr, laced with genuine delight. “Someone’s a sore loser.”

Your grip on the blade tightened, your hands trembling from the force. “And someone’s too smug for his own good.”

Taiga’s grin widened. His hands splayed out beside him in mock surrender, yet his golden eyes burned like a wildfire. When was the last time someone had been so bold with him? Ah, Romeo doesn't count..

“Admit it,” you mumbled, pressing the knife just a little closer. “You cheated.”

His laughter came in a breathless exhale, “You wound me.”

“You wish.”

His pulse thummed under the blade but oh no, he wasn’t afraid. He was enjoying this. The danger, the thrill, it was the same high as a perfect gamble.

“I gotta say,” he hummed, tilting his head back slightly, purposely trying to get your knife closer to him, “I like this side of you. You're more fun than I thought. Didn't think much of you when you walked in."

You scowled. “You think I’m playing around here? That I'm joking?”

“Oh, no, no. You’re dead serious. And that’s what makes it even better.” His voice dipped a tad lower. “Because if you were just any other fool with a knife, I’d already be out of here. But you? You know exactly what you’re doing. You enjoy making me squirm, don't you?”

You hated how right he was.

The look of pure adrenaline in his eyes, mixed with his scent, was all too intoxicating for you to handle.

“I should take my winnings back,” you mused, eyes trailing over his smirk and down to his jaw. “You don’t deserve them.”

“Hah. Is that what this is about?” His eyes squinted, oh he definitely knew how much of a high you were getting from this. “Or is this just an excuse to get me under you?”

Your blade nicked his skin just enough to see his adam apple bob as he swallowed, the first real sign of surprise breaking through his confidence.

He was addicted already.

“You talk too much,” you said, leaning in just slightly, tilting your head. “Maybe I should cut that tongue out.”

“Mhm? Is that a pretty sight to imagine?”

You nearly stabbed him on principle.

Taiga only laughed again, and damn him, even pinned like this, he still looked like he was the one in control. He was reveling in every second of this little game (Is that what this was?)

His voice dropped to a whisper. “So… what’s your next move, hm?"

Your next move…

You could slit his throat. Take what was yours. Walk away, victorious. The trouble you would get in was far too big to actually do that, but you are good at talking..

Or.. you could take a gamble of your own.

And wasn’t that what Taiga loved most?

Your smirk matched his as you leaned down even more, close enough that your breath glided over his lips. For the second time this night, his bravado faltered.

“I think…” you murmured, letting the knife drag slowly down his throat, “I’ll let you live.”

A pause.

Then, a chuckle. It was breathless, and a little bit wild.

“Oooh,” he purred, “Lucky me.”

You both knew that the game had just begun, and this would not be the last time you played with Taiga Hoshibami.
