i absolutely adore the legend of the giant water lily (vitória régia), as told by tupi-guarani peoples. there are a few different versions with slight variations, so this is only one! ♡
Tumblr media
the moon goddess, jaci, comes out at night to kiss and light up the faces of the most beautiful virgins in the village. when the moon goes behind a mountain, she is taking girls with her into the night sky, and turning them to stars.
naiá was a beautiful young woman. she was the daughter of a tribe's leader, so she grew up listening to tales of the moon goddess. she became infatuated by the idea of being able to join the moon in the night sky by becoming a star, despite warnings that this meant giving up her flesh and bone, being only light. this soon turned to obsession; she no longer ate, no longer slept, instead she spent her nights 'hunting' for the moon. she climbed trees and mountains trying to reach out and touch her, but to no avail.
one night, during a full moon, naiá was resting at the edge of a lake. this is when she saw the moon's reflection upon the water, and she did not think twice before jumping into the water to join the goddess. however, she drowned trying to reach her… jaci had watched this scene unfold from the night sky, and honoured naiá by turning her into a different kind of star, the 'star of the waters', which is the giant water lily.

Aodhvssvcjsnacridisfbwkfhevxmqoegbe i love your blogggg hiiiiiii wbbbbb im sure ur thesis is doing great but still good luck on thattt
And as a bonus heres a random myth dump bc i said so:
There was this girl called Naiá, most of the village's men found her attractive. However she refused all of their advances because she was in love with the moon, every night she would look up at the moon and hope to become a star, since stars were the people that Jaci(the moon godess) brought to stay with her in the sky. One night as Naia went to look at the moon once again she saw its reflection on the lakes water, and believing the godess had come to bathe in the lake she tried reaching out to the reflection, she fell in but couldnt hoist herself back up, drowning. When Jaci was notified by this, she was touched and so transformed Naia into the water lilly (vitória régia), the star of the waters. So yeah, vitoria regia origin myth ftw!!!
Yeah idk i just thunk the myth is neat
-a soup of mythos
AWKJWJDUJEJSK I KNEW IT WAS YOU @mythos-soup FROM THE OPENING OF UR ASK HEE HEE OMGGG I MISSED GETTING ASKS FROM YOU 🥺
i love that story so much that is sooo cute… i love how some personifications of the Moon like Selene and Jaci are just so sweet and gentle and then you have the aztec Coyolxauhqui and she’s a rage machine.. soo good! the moon has RANGE 🌝

'Echoing Voices' at the G20: Maritime expedition delivers ocean pollution manifesto in Rio
Tumblr media
A small sailboat embodies the power of ocean culture, the purity of childhood, and the hope for preserving Brazilian seas. This is the vessel Vitória Régia, which will deliver messages against environmental pollution to the G20 summit authorities in Rio de Janeiro during the Oceans 20 Summit this Saturday. The sailboat arrived in the city on Wednesday and is docked near the Museu do Amanhã, carrying a document that includes insights from environmentalists, students, educators, civil society representatives, and leaders of initiatives and NGOs. Produced collaboratively across four different regions of the country, the material brings to life the manifesto "Echoing Voices."
Rio was chosen as the final destination for the "Voices of the Oceans Maritime Expedition - Brazil Route" 2024, conceived by the Schurmann Family, due to the global summit. The journey began in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, in September, when the crew of five sailors started collecting messages.
Initially envisaged as a single 30m² scroll, the manifesto now spans two scrolls (60m²) due to high demand for participation. It features contributions from children, students, quilombolas, Pataxó people, riverine communities, and others inspired by the initiative.
— It's in a wooden box. We made it like an ark, a treasure 'Echoing Voices'. It brings together the diverse voices we encountered along our journey — notes Alexandre Moreno, spokesperson for the Schurmann Family. — It's a literally large document. Civil society is on board with us.

also ccan you tell me about the that braxilian. uyuri. urban legend. story, thing i dorgor what its called. the one where a lady chases the moon who is also a lady
HI IMM SMILINF SO. HARDAF THIS ASK YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY YAAAASYFRKQKKSHAHSWJDKWFJR TYSM FOR LETTINF ME TELL T AGAAINNNNNHFHFKEGKBSNGGM ily 4 this ask/p ty ty tysmdnmsnfbejg
ok so yyoyre talking abouttt t. the vitória régia one impretty sure ^_^. anyways heres th Storying ^_^
okokokokokokokok so.
it all starts w naiá (the lady). and jaci (the moon goddess). it was believed that every night, jaci would go down and pick a lady and turn her into a star.
naiá was very much in love with jaci, desperately wishing to be the lucky one to shine with her. people would warn her that upon being chosen by the goddess, she would lose all her flesh and blood, and turn to light. she didn't care. she still longed for the moon either way.
so every night while basically everyone was asleep, the lady would rush out to and try to reach out to her. desperately looking out to her, climbing the tallest trees, arms open to the sky, all to fulfill the one wish she had- to be a star, shining so so bright alongside her, but to no avail.
this happened every single night by that point- no matter how much she'd try to reach, it was like the goddess never listened to her cries. but she had no signs of giving up, still rushing night after night after night, for the moonlight..it's said she even fell ill bc she straight up would not eat or sleep well due to how badly she wanted to be seen by jaci. and so it was like that for a while. nighttime, naiá tries to reach out for jaci, fails.
until a certain night.
naiá was, as usual, chasing the moon again. she decided to sit by the edge of a river (is edge the right word,). and there she saw the reflection of her beloved. she immediately thought jaci came down, bathing in the waters. and she didn't think twice. she promptly jumped into the river-- but, as she noticed that was only jaci's reflection in the sky, it was too late. she did try backtracking but drowned right then and there.
jaci, seeing her sacrifice, decided to turn her into an honorary star; "the star of the waters". the star is the vitória régia, a plant in the river whose flowers only bloom at night (and stay for 48 hours but im starting to go into the technical parts of the flower DJDSVDHR)
