How to Dress for Making Offerings to Lalla Malika?
💜 Wear fancy clothes in purple, pink, green, multicoloured or with gold embroidery (purple is the most common).
💜 Shoes with embellishments are good too, especially if they're in one of her colours. I have a pair of pink ballet slippers with pearls, black rhinestones and small gold studs that I wear with my dress (a blush pink djellaba with gold embroidery). High heels are common.
💜 Female followers wear makeup when giving offerings. She's known for her love of cosmetics so her devotees honour this, applying lipstick, eyeshadow, blush, foundation, mascara, brow pencil, kohl and sometimes lipgloss (it's uncommon for men to wear makeup but I know of one male devotee who does).
💜 One description of a female devotee's outfit:
"Iman sat at the center of the sofa, surrounded by cushions. She wore a long, elegant takšiṭa in violet with gold paillettes sewn specifically for the occasion. Her smooth hair fell over her shoulders, revealing long gold-dangling earrings. Her eyelids and lips were tinted in sparkling violet, and her nails were painted the same color. Around her neck was a long gold necklace with a large pendant made from a piece of ʿūd al-qumari — the incense for Malika."
💜 A second description of another outfit the same devotee wore:
"Iman made her entrance. Adorned in ceremonial attire (crafted a year earlier for this special occasion), a purple tulle veil adorned with sequins covering her face and shoulders, and wearing numerous bracelets and rings, among which stood out a large purple stone, she held a perfume bottle in her hand as she presented herself to the assembly, moving slowly toward the throne."
💜 Male devotees must be clean shaven.
💜 Both male and female followers style their hair nicely. It doesn't matter if it's long or short, straight or curly, just as long as it's styled. Daughters and sons of Malika often go to the hairdresser before attending gatherings in her honour, but styling your hair by yourself is acceptable.
💜 Jewellery is worn by both males and females. Men often wear gold bracelets, watches and rings, and women go all out - earrings, bracelets, necklaces, chokers, and rings, frequently with purple stones or beads to match their dresses but not always. Any jewellery is fine as long as it's beautiful. Jewellery should always be purified before wearing for the ritual.
💜 Female followers like to wear rings with purple stones, as it's believed Malika wears a purple ring - I have read many accounts of followers saying they dreamt of her visiting them and giving them a ring.
💜 Women may also wear accessories like headbands and headscarves in her colours, as well as mdemma (gold or silver belts), embellished hair pins and even tiaras. Men sometimes wear purple scarves around their necks, and tarbouches.
💜 Women get henna done. This is often a part of the ritual itself - at parties in honour of Malika, there will be a henna artist present who draws designs on the ladies' hands. Malika prefers tree-fill over dot fill henna, and intricate artistic styles are strongly associated with her, especially Fassi style henna and delicate floral designs. Men occasionally get henna done too although it's less common.
💜 Women also like to get their nails manicured, often in purple. At a minimum nails should be neat and well shaped.
💜 Both sexes wear perfume and cologne. This can also be part of the ritual, with followers sometimes spraying themselves with perfume as they dance to her rih (a folk song in honour of her). Any perfume is fine, but she especially loves fine colognes, and her favourite scents are oud and sandalwood (several sources say she also likes pure musk, which in Morocco is commonly used as a solid perfume or in the form of attar).
💜 Even assistants at the ritual, despite their roles as mere servants, are required to dress their best: everyone present must honour Lalla Malika with elegance and graceful behaviour, devotee or not.
💜 Before putting on your ritual outfit, it's important to wash thoroughly. One account I read of people preparing for the celebration reads:
"The nails are cut, the unwanted hair is removed. On the face they come applied herbal masks and perfumed oils, the hair is treated with henna and clay. The body is entirely covered with a mixture of henna and water, rubbed with a grain glove thick, wet and rubbed again. This operation, which lasts about half an hour, is carried out with the help of the escorts or, in exchange for a few coins, a body cleaner. This removes all impurities from the skin. The glove is shown and inspected repeatedly with the woman, an operation accompanied by exclamations about how dirty it was with dead skin. Another service that can be requested within the ḥammam is massage, with oils essential, which may be required for pleasant relaxation. Then we proceed to the second phase: the treatment with soap and shampoo. The body is washed first with traditional soap, then with a finer flavored soap. Hair is washed, combed, smoothed. At the end of the bath, the woman goes to the hairdresser and make-up artist before returning to home."

omg so happy ur back!! tell us all about the kittens!!
In short... They are getting far too big too quickly!
They have all moved out now, yes all!
Tim seems to exist in different dimentions depending on his mood. We can go for a while without seeing him but he is handling his powers well. They are not exactly like mine.
Fassy is doing very well at his protector training. It seems he will be at least the same size as Tugger.
Victor has warmed up to Tugger a bit more, at least they understand and trust each other more than ever. He loves learning with Cori and Mile, and yes he too has powers. Unfortunately they are very limited to rain. He can tell you exactly when and where it will rain and how much. I do not think he can conjure any himself.
Mackenzie has already destroyed three dens. He is still heartbroken Ath left.
Alazne is very much on her way to being the new Tugger. I have mixed feelings about this.
Fee is the most adventerous, exploring mamy places beyond the yard. I think she is missing Skimble and visiting the trains.
Tia... We thought she was not going to move out at all. We were preparing for her to stay forever but she surprised us and moved to her own nearby place! She has spent a long time perfecting her powers. It is possible she could be the next magician around here.
Jellibean is so sweet and I'm proud at how quickly she is willing to help around the yard! She too has powers and can disappear at will and is incredibly good at it. Much to Munks annoyance.
The youngest three... None of them gained any magical ability. And Tugger is just as brilliant with them as with the others.
Leo is well on his way to easily be the tallest. Deapite how intimidating he appears he is the gentlest soul. Venna has him wrapped around her paw.
Gemini is very sneaky. A master manipulator yet he uses this ability to help others in weird ways. But if he does want something he knows he shouldn't, he goes straight to Tugger and within seconds has him doing exactly what he wants in seconds.
Venna is still selective mute although the list of those she will talk to has grown. Because Tugger is so big and loud he did scare her for a while and this broke Tuggers heart but with some work, she trusts him now and has had her fair share of naps in his mane. We have discovered she can have a very uhh... Fiery streak. If you upset her boy do you know about it. Quite the temper on her sometimes. She spent some time jealois of Tia and Beanie but they have grown quite close now.
I think this is everything
@acurious-cat can you think of anything else?

Fun fact, did u know they filmed the music video for Gorillaz' Dirty Harry in Windhoek, Namibia? That's crazy man. I'd ALSO really like to visit Mozambique! I used to live on South Africa's east coast and i know it can be a really similar climate up there, lush and rainforesty!

UMMM i used to be a fan of Trevor Noah's comedy stuff as a kid but i don't connect to it as much as an adult, idk if it's a change in my taste or if I just connect less since he moved to the USA, i will say he's probably still funny though j just don't keep up with his work as much anymore

Los Cementeros repiten en la final de Copa por México
Los Cementeros repiten en la final de Copa por México
La segunda edición de la Copa por México terminará igual que la primera … con Guadalajara y Cruz Azul dispuderechos de pretemporada. To get more news about Liga MX México, you can visit futbol-mx.com official website.

It is time to review the other two places.
MORDI E VAI
Having completed my Pantheon visit, I ventured into the less explored parts of Rome under a scorching August sun, at one point getting off a bus a stop too early and thus extending my trip to the little-lauded quarter of Testaccio. You can imagine how I felt, finally reaching the shade of the enclosed marketplace, only to discover that the perfidious Catholics have done it again and closed up shop because yesterday was one of their little schismatic holidays. Google maps has also had a hand in this ignominious act of trickery.
(Luckily, the pasta place just across it was open and I had the best carbonara of my life so it's fine)
FASSI
This one was even worse to get to, because there was no chance of not passing through the Zona Termini, a trial of physical and mental fortitude that I was not quite prepared for at approximately 13:00 under the aforementioned unforgiving Lazio sun. Eventually I hobbled onto the tram that stops near it, grateful for the ride but resentful of the smell. Once I arrived in the bus station-like gelateria, things were not looking up. However, this is about the gelato.
The big cup "only" cost me 3.5€, which is admirably cheap for Rome in August, if a little bit unthinkable where I come from. The pistachio and strawberry felt natural and fresh, the chocolate was creamy and not overly sugary, and the cream gelato had a distinct aftertaste of egg yolk, recalling the best of home made ice cream my grandma used to make. All in all a fantastic and tasty gelato option for anyone willing to brave the trials of actually physically arriving at the place.
If you're still in Rome and want to eat a good gelato try Fassi. For something savory try "Mordi e vai" in Testaccio (they make sandwiches with typical Roman street food such as trippa). There's also Osteria da Fortunata, their fettuccine with oxtail are really good!
today is my last day so I will try the first two (esp bc i love trippa) but i am categorically NOT going to da Fortunata, have you seen the way that place is PACKED with tourists? this cannot possibly be good

Henna for Lalla Malika
🌹The henna used for Lalla Malika is known as "the rose henna" (hnany wardiya).
🌹 Malika herself is so associated with henna, she's sometimes called the “henna jinniyya."
🌹It is extremely intricate and requires a skilled artist. Henna designs for Lalla Malika are tree-fill rather than dot-fill. Designs feature zigzagging lines that intersect to form small triangles, and she particularly likes flower, star, and geometric motifs. The Fassi henna style (which is what people normally think of when thinking of Moroccan henna) is particularly associated with Malika. It's a style that completely covers the area being painted on, intricate, bold, and non-repetitive. But any henna style, as long as it's delicate, pleasing to the eye, and shows off the artists skill is adequate.
🌹 Henna for Malika is not only painted on the hands, but also the wrists, feet, and ankles, and perhaps even further up the arms and legs. The soles of the feet and palms of the hands may be painted as well.
🌹 The henna leaves or powder to be used in a ritual ceremony should be presented in a green cloth bag, before being mixed into a paste with the following: a mixture of rosewater, clove, agarwood, musk, and sugar, which is boiled and cooled before mixing with the henna for ceremonial use. There should also be white cotton and a box of tissues for the henna artist to use during the ceremony.
🌹 Before hennaing, one should burn sandalwood to prevent Malika’s tickling from smudging the work.
🌹The henna artist (ḥannāya) is an extremely important part of any ceremony dedicated to Lalla Malika. Henna is essential for invoking Lalla Malika. Equipped with her tools—a glass syringe, a bowl, a bag of henna, some cotton, and gauze—the ḥannāya, once recruited for the ritual, visits the homes of those commissioning the ceremony to perform the henna decoration.
🌹 The ḥannāya, as well as being an artist, also plays a role similar to that of the therapist: through her privileged communication with Lalla Malika and the use of henna, she can identify afflictions caused by spirits (or the evil eye), neutralize their influence, and impart the baraka (blessing) of Lalla Malika. Additionally, the ḥannāya cares for the client during the ṭaifūr, watches over her, and promptly intervenes with appropriate perfumes and incense in the event of possession.
🌹 Although ritual henna is mainly the domain of women, male devotees are allowed to get henna too if they wish (the top right image in the set of pictures below is of henna a teenage male devotee got).

Kiru's Advent Calendar, Day 12📏
Today is one of the ships I've always wanted to write, one for which I've inexplicably not seen any content whatsoever (and I don't understand, to me they seem perfect). Also please note that according to Siege, 'Kaid' means commander - Oryx isn't in some delusional one-sided relationship 😆 (Kaid/Oryx, Rating E, smut/spanking, ~2.1k words)
.
Never before has Saif been in a room that disclosed its usual occupant so readily: every piece of furniture is placed with great deliberation, there is no speck of dust visible, and the chamber carries itself with a grave solemnity so befitting its owner. Dark wood is finely ornamented, the mosaics are precise things of beauty, the pillars elegant and free of decoration. It is an office fit for a leader, functional yet impressive, made to instil a sense of awe while not unnecessarily drawing the eye.
Though Saif wishes for something to rest his gaze on, anything to distract his mind from the scrutiny of the one person whose favour he seeks. His feet are half-sunken into the atypical thick rug right in front of the heavy desk from which he’s been welcomed a minute ago, ordered to stand where he now stands. He stares straight ahead though his hairs strain upwards, outwards in the direction of the threat circling him. He’s too aware of the other man’s presence despite his nearly soundless pacing.
“Tell me, how long have you been with us?”
Sharp words cause his ears to twitch. A rhetorical question, no doubt his Kaid knows every detail about all the students he oversees. “Seven months, one week and three days”, Saif replies evenly. He’s counted the days ever since the Fortress doors finally swallowed him, counted them in anticipation of being spat out again, deemed unpalatable. So far, he’s been lucky, but every visit to this very office causes his stomach to sink. A small voice prophesies this time, he’ll throw you out whenever he climbs the stairs, his feet heavy as rocks.
Jalal El Fassi steps into his field of vision, a tall, imposing figure. His gaze, too, is unwavering and bores a hole into Saif’s skull with disapproval. This time, it’s serious. “And how many days did you starve yourself to be accepted? Knelt outside, let your body rust, let your mind wither, let your reflexes decay? How long did you beg, like a desperate lover, how much time did you waste?”
He barely raises his voice, doesn’t need to. Saif resists the urge to shrink away from the harsh judgement and lies: “I don’t know.” He knows exactly how many hours it was. As of yet, he cannot ascertain how many of those have been in vain.
His Kaid is silent, straightens a pen on the polished surface of his desk, rights a paperweight before closing his fingers around a long, wooden ruler. Saif catches himself watching his fingers but quickly reverts back to his indifferent stare, worried El Fassi might notice. Not that he requested Saif doesn’t look at him, but… it seems appropriate. It feels like the respectful thing to do.
“You broke how many of his bones?” The other man slips out of his cone of vision once more, like a tiger. Just as dangerous.
Saif’s breaths turn shallower. Some idiotic, unfounded hope had remained that he wouldn’t have to answer for his actions, that he’d be commended for his outstanding performance instead. He’s suddenly cold, almost shivers as he recalls the familiar sound of having gone too far. “Three”, he says quietly. When something brushes against his naked arm, he jumps, sharply sucks in some air but it’s just the ruler, its edge an unmistakeable message. His Kaid wants precision, not euphemisms, so he amends: “Three broken bones, two fractures.”
The object disappears again, apparently satisfied. El Fassi is behind him and must sense his discomfort yet neither of them move. Around them, the air is perfectly still.
When he opens his mouth once more, begins to justify himself, the flat side is touched to his flesh, silencing him in favour of El Fassi’s probing: “Did he deserve it?”
It’s deliberate, Saif understands immediately, instinctively, his mind latching on to what little common sense he has left when recalling the event – yet there’s a fire too, flames licking at his thoughts, singeing them and tarnishing them with soot. He did, they spell out, and more. Fingers twitching, he opens his mouth in defiance as long as the white hot rage hasn’t had a chance to settle in yet, expects his lips to form the answer capable of saving his soul, of preserving what he worked so hard to achieve, and what comes out instead, to his horror, is an emotionally laden: “He shouldn’t have -”
With a loud thwack, the ruler is brought down on his upper arm, making him yelp in surprise and shy away. It stings without really hurting, the surprise worse than the brief pain. But what’s worse is the following rush of adrenaline, the brief surge of blood racing through his entire body, the rise in temperature. His heart is suddenly pounding hard enough to render him light-headed and instant shame colours his cheeks.
What sort of reaction is this?
Regardless, he refuses to learn his lesson, face burning with the injustice of it all, and he tries again: “He did not deserve the broken bones, no. But what he said, when he insulted -”
This time, his throat fails to contain the pitiful choked noise his body aches to release when he’s hit again, on the other arm. He wishes the ground would swallow him up, not just because he seems unable to forgive against which he already retaliated disproportionately, but also because he’s noticing more and more misplaced excitement bubbling up in him, utterly inappropriate and deeply shameful. This is his Kaid, the one person he respects the most on this entire earth, his mentor, teacher, commander, the one deciding his future. He shouldn’t have this kind of reaction to him, let alone around him, and yet he can’t help the rising arousal.
“I value your presence”, El Fassi seeks to soothe the injury, oblivious to Saif’s misfortune, “and I see great potential in you. Many lack your determination, though it is notable they make up for it in discipline. An aspect you have yet to master.”
His hands are balled into fists and he prays to his God that the other man remain where he is as to not discover the state he’s in. “I’m sorry, Kaid”, he grits out, defiance defeated by an overwhelming abundance of emotions. “I will try.”
“You will do”, booms El Fassi and somehow this, too, exacerbates the situation, awakens a beast inside Saif thirsting to be tamed, ready to roll over at every command.
And yet there’s a part of him refusing to comply, a part responsible for a mere repetition of his assertion: “… I will try.”
An audible gasp escapes him on the next impact of wood on skin, his lower abs twitching in response. Why must he tempt the demon so, why does he risk exposure? When his Kaid lets him hear quiet footsteps, he begins trembling, endeavours to hide his excitement by shifting his legs though he fears to draw even more attention. He cannot meet El Fassi’s gaze, not filled with impure thoughts like this. He barely dares to blink. The blood beneath his skin is roaring, leaving him dizzy.
There is a prolonged silence which itches underneath his skin, causes it to prickle uncomfortably. No doubt, he must have seen.
“Perhaps you require a refresher on what discipline entails. I would be happy to oblige.” His voice betrays nothing.
Did he notice? Did he see?
“Pull down your trousers and your underwear.”
Saif nearly chokes on nothing, his eyes flick over to an impassive face still wearing a stoic expression as if it’d been an ordinary request, but his body is set aflame. This can’t be. Anticipation constricts his chest and fills the space between his legs.
“You may refuse, of course, if you deem such measures unnecessary.”
His shaky hands move on their own, the disbelief over his Kaid’s words not yet processed in the slightest though where his brain limps, the rest of him soars. Humiliation burns low in his belly, dread about possible consequences yet somehow the negative roiling merely brightens the excitement. He dares not speak a word for fear of breaking this spell, interrupting whatever has taken hold of the other man.
“Brace on my desk, Saif.”
Though it’s been in many mouths, hearing his name spoken in this context bestows it with more significance than ever. Makes it personal. This is about him, his Kaid is doing this to him and no second after he’s leaned forward and pressed his palms to the smooth surface does the first proper hit land.
It’s sharp, radiant, spreads through every cell in his body for less than a heartbeat and then he’s left with nothing but a dull ache. El Fassi’s precision is unmatched, he hit the centre of his behind directly, struck one buttock right in the middle. The sensation is terrifying in its intensity and Saif does not know whether he hopes for this to continue till eternity or to cease immediately.
Thwack.
His Kaid is not holding back. The force is remarkable, the pain it awards cumulative the more he maltreats one and the same spot. The tears gathering in the corners of Saif’s eyes feel like pinpricks, the act of crying as much of a punishment as the rest is. As if presenting his bare arse wasn’t demeaning enough.
Thwack.
Saif lets out a shuddering breath. When he holds the air in, each hit does not hurt as much.
Thwack.
He’s losing count on the eighth hit (or the ninth?). Focusing on anything but the throbbing ache, the aching lust coupled with an overbearing, deep-rooted shame is getting impossible, his mind is filled with nothing but the wish to survive. His nails are scraping over polished wood. One tear has rolled down his nose and dropped onto the ornate rug, being absorbed and disappearing immediately.
Thwack.
Noises are inevitable. He whimpers on every impact, attempts to squirm away from the merciless hits abusing sensitive skin without moving his hands or feet. They are glued to their respective spots. He feels hot, unbearably hot, his entire upper body must be flushed.
Thwack.
Helplessly, he stares down at the root of all evil, hanging swollen and heavy between his legs. Not once does the thought enter his mind to touch himself, it somehow seems a line he will not cross unprompted and yet the pleasure increases, despite lack of direct stimulation. He’s betrayed by his own body, this pulsing, throbbing piece of flesh craving every little bit of pain. He’s certain he could finish within seconds if he used his hand.
Thwack.
Grasp on reality waning, he bites his cheek to try and hold on to something. He’s in blind agony, legs threatening to give in, throat hoarse from badly suppressing groans. His posture has suffered, forehead almost resting on clenched fists, allowing him to witness as one clear, sticky droplet breaks off and falls to the ground. His face is wet from all the tears he’s shed and yet this drop is of a different kind, a testament to his perversion.
A loud voice yanks him back into the present, forcing him to sober up enough to remember where he is: “You’ve had enough.”
Light-headed, he attempts to right himself and stumbles, appreciates the hand grabbing his to ensure his balance before it lets go again. After his eyes are able to focus again, he dresses, wincing as fabric is pulled over sore skin. Bright pain remains at the forefront of his mind and still he recognises the darkness in El Fassi’s gaze as a reflection of his own desire – a piece of information he is unable to process for now.
“Do not harm another student again. Or this will be the last private conversation between us, Saif. …I trust you understand the implications.”
His head is swimming and all he manages is a dumb nod. He understands, yes. Understands that he might have a new incentive to practice self control. Something his Kaid might be able to assist him with.
Disregarding his apparent inability to speak, El Fassi steps much closer to place a surprisingly warm hand on top of his head, the gesture accompanied by a thumb brushing over his scalp in an almost affectionate gesture, something Saif has never before seen him perform. “Do not disappoint me”, comes the gentle reminder right before he’s ushered out of the office, ending up disorientated, pining for release of any kind and grimacing in pain in the hallway outside.
He’s not sure why his heart is pounding so keenly, whether it is overwhelming relief over getting another chance or something else entirely. What he does know is that he needs to get his unbridled rage under control, and soon.

Lota Power
Some years ago a British friend stopped by for a visit. After we finished our dinner, he proceeded to excuse himself to use the washroom. Some time lapsed, and he emerged scratching his head, utterly confused, as if he had seen a hippopotamus in there.
“Mariam!”
“Yes?”
“Can I ask you something? I hope you won’t think I’m being rude.”
“Ok. Sure. Go ahead.”
“I don’t see any plants anywhere. I’ve looked and looked, really. I can’t for the life of me understand why you have this watering can in there?”
I threw my head back in laughter. My dear friend was holding a Lota.
Image 1: A sturdy, long-lasting, beautifully crafted, stainless steel Lota. This Lota offers a functional facilitation of toilet hygiene, as seen in South Asian toilet customs, while also serving an aesthetic purpose. I inherited this Lota from my mother. This Lota was made in Pakistan and has made a migratory journey to Canada. This Lota offers a sustainable way of using the toilet. The Lota, if used worldwide, could reduce our toilet paper imprint on the planet. Image © Mariam Magsi 2021
The Lota is a rounded vessel with a spout predominantly found in South Asian toilets in Pakistan and India, as well as other Asian countries, albeit in different shapes, varieties and forms. It can be made using a myriad of materials such as plastic and/or stainless steel. The Lota is used to wash the privates, both front and back, and is an integral component of toilet hygiene customs in the Indian subcontinent and also amidst the diaspora. Of the versatile uses of the Lota, I have also seen it being used as a watering vessel for small plants, since the pour of the water is soft and mindful.
I exhausted my resources looking for peer-reviewed journals on the Lota through my institution’s archives. Research yielded a Lota de Macedo Soares in a countryside near Samambaia in “The Burglar of the Tower of Babel,” but it seems like the tower lacked South Asian toilet hygiene customs. The Lota was not to be found there. I found a Lota in The Journal of Parasitology, but instead of a vessel, I believe they were referencing a freshwater fish from the lota lota genus. There’s a suburb in the city of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia named Lota. A quick Wikipedia search describes the Lota as a vessel that can be found in the Indian subcontinent as far back as the 2nd millenium BC, and it not only informed personal hygiene customs and rituals, but variations of the Lota, made with brass, copper, and other materials, were extensively used in prayers, sacred rituals and communal ceremonies. We must thank the Chalcolithic period cultures of South Asia for gifting the world this beautiful vessel that continues to serve purpose and function in South Asian homes within the subcontinent and across the world, a testament to the obstinance of South Asian culture to submit to the British Empire. The Lota survived, fought, overcame and outlived British rule. The Lota escaped colonization, and continues to do so.
Image 1 is a visual reference of the importance of how these objects are tied in with familial bonding, ancestral lineage and private, unseen, invisible attempts at decolonizing bathroom culture, while remaining rooted to the hygiene customs of our subcontinent’s ancestors. My mother taught me how to use the Lota through practical hygiene demonstrations, solidifying my internal knowledge systems with a specific set of toilet hygiene customs and rituals, that were transmitted to her through her mother, who was taught by her mother, creating a long intergenerational legacy of Lota power.
Image 2: This Lota belongs to my maternal cousin, Adeela. It was made in Pakistan and migrated to the UK. Her husband, Fassi suggested using it as a plantar, which is such a lovely idea, but Adeela rightfully claimed it for herself. In her words: “No! I want a pretty Lota washing my butt.” The design you see on the surface of this Lota is inspired by Truck Art which is an entire industry of its own in South Asia. This Lota was purchased from Zainab Market in Karachi, Pakistan. Image © Adeela Badshah
My mother didn’t only teach me how to use the Lota, but also emphasized, through practice, that this important component of toilet hygiene was an integral part of our faith. While a wide array of religions, ideologies, belief systems, cultural customs, hierarchies, and laws can be found in South Asia, one can access some form of the Lota, or the other, in mosques, temples, churches, schools, public washrooms etc. A common, daily life practice, that unites billions across the globe, irrespective of class, ethnic background and gender. Having visited Muslim, Hindu, Christian and Zoarastrian homes in Pakistan, I have always had access to the Lota, a symbol of a private act that signifies our unity. Those lucky enough to be our lovers, close friends and non-desi kin and chosen family gain entry into this special community of humans on the planet. My husband swears by the Lota after discovering its vast benefits and unbeatable squeaky clean results. #LotaPower
I initially posted Image 1 on Instagram and received an enthusiastic response from friends and family. A fellow South Asian migrant friend, with roots in India, shared a wonderful memory of how in her family, the vessel used, was called, a Mug. This is an interesting cultural overlap, because at our family residence in Karachi, Pakistan, buckets with plastic “Mugs” are placed in all spaces reserved for bathing. My mother would refer to them as “Mugs” as well, and sometimes, when she seamlessly transitioned from English to Urdu to Punjabi, she would say “Mugga.” She bathed her whole life, seated on a stool, with a bucket of water and a Mug. Through this method of bathing, she was able to conserve more water, which would otherwise be wasted in a stand up shower.

I have never quite been able to assimilate to North American toilet hygiene norms. While bidets and hand-held Muslim showers can be found in bathrooms in Europe and the Middle East, they’ve certainly not taken off as a mainstream practice in North America.
Image 4: The other side of the Lota featured in Image 2 has this gorgeous peacock painted on the surface floating through a lush, green garden on a carpet of vibrant roses. The artwork on the Lota tells a story, and transports the viewer and the user to an imaginative world filled with possibility. Image © Adeela Badshah
I often carry an extra bottle of water when I visit non-desi homes and public spaces in case I have to use the toilet. I’ve introduced the Lota to several Canadian families, many of whom have adopted the practice as a welcome new addition to their daily toilet hygiene. My friends and chosen family members often make arrangements for a Lota in their washrooms when I visit their homes, particularly those who know me well, and are familiar with the customs I value. I do appreciate these kind, inclusive, mutually beneficial gestures.
I came across an awesome work of art by Pakistani illustrator, Samya Arif, featuring a portable, collapsable Lota: https://gotalota.com/ - If you sign up on their website you’ll get a light-hearted, humorous newsletter, which is a total bonus. Where was this genius invention during my now retired raving days?

Recently, I have also seen companies like Tushy advertising easy to attach bidets. Though I could just as easily install bidets or hand-held Muslim showers in my bathroom, I prefer the traditional Lota method of my ancestors. This practice keeps me grounded to home, connected with my desi roots, carrying forward a wise and sustainable method of hygiene that has benefitted members of my community for centuries. May the #LotaPower be with you.

Blocked but not bothered
This is a funny site! So I got blocked a long time ago, during the Fassbender craze. I think it was because I posted with different screen names from the same IP address. Haha! I discovered I’m not very savvy with that kind of stuff.
But what happened was, all the ladies were gaga over “Fassy” but then he was seen out with a lady they didn’t care for and Kaiser (I think?) wrote this super bitchy post where she essentially said that all you had to do was have dark skin and Fassbender would sleep with you. Yikes!!
It was my second comment ever, and I posted that I wasn’t sure what “this person” was trying to say, but it came off sounding really bad at best and racist at worst.
My comment was deleted, I was blocked, and she added an “Update” line to her post pointing out how she was of Indian heritage with dark skin herself and she was just trying to say…blah blah blah. Lol! I think myself and some other commenters got right under her thin skin!! 😂
I still visit CB everyday and enjoy a lot of the posts and a good deal of what the commenters say, although it can get a bit ridiculous fairly frequently. I’m glad I can’t post comments anymore actually, keeps me from engaging fully in the OTT ridiculousness of the soccer mom blog. But there is a lot of insightful stuff woven in there too.
Hope this story amuses you all as much as it still amuses me!
------------------------------------------------------
Oh , those were good old days of innocence - Fassy, Bendy, Tommy. I think it was with Bendy and the conspiracy theories about his wife when CB took on a darker tone and really went downhill.
