More on eating seasonally
In discussing this topic with a friend she asked me what was the benefit of eating seasonally.  My answer....it is both cheaper and the food tastes better.
It is cheaper because you can buy local produce that has not had to be shipped across the country or further, so there are no costly trucking or shipping expenses.  And you are supporting a local farmer who has a living to make and needs to sell his or her produce.
Food tastes better because it is able to mature and ripen before it is picked.  Often when produce is picked to ship across the country it is picked green and sprays and other "preserving" chemicals are used to keep it "fresh" and saleable.  I do not eat peaches out of season because a fresh peach right off the tree is so delicious that I cannot stand the mealy bland piece of fruit that is passed off as a peach the rest of the year.  It is truly an imposter as far as I am concerned.
I admit I do buy lettuce and broccoli and grape tomatoes all winter long.  And I buy lots of citrus through the winter.  But since citrus does not grow in my part of the country I still try and keep the same boundaries and only buy citrus in December through March or April when it is in season in the southern states.  I know it is doesn't compare to picking it off the tree but that is not an option for me here.  Remember we are being realistic about how to eat seasonally.
Can you think of other benefits in eating seasonally?
Jennifer
