In this episode of The Catholic Bookworm, Kiki Latimer interviews Jem Sullivan concerning her book Way of Beauty: Rekindling Eucharistic Amazement Through VISIO Divina (January 26, 2024) We are created for beauty, the visible form of truth and goodness. The experience of beauty awakens our spiritual senses and prepares us for a new way of seeing the world. Through its beauty and spiritual power, the Eucharist provides us with the opportunity to experience a deeply personal transformation of life. Way of Beauty aims to help you discover, or rediscover, a sense of "Eucharistic amazement" through the beauty of sacred art depicting the theology, history, and spirituality of the Mass. This beautiful book also introduces the practice of visio divina, focusing on the Eucharist through twelve masterpieces of sacred art. Alongside each work of art, you will find prayers of the Mass, passages from Sacred Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and a guided reflection. With each reflection, you'll be led on a Eucharistic pilgrimage of beauty to encounter how the desire and promise of Jesus to be with his disciples always continues today in the gift and mystery of the Eucharist. Montrose Park on Christmas morning. Every winter is different or maybe I am just oblivious. There are patterns in the wind swept snow I have not seen before. The subtle green tint from the grass beneath. But that is not all there is. There is the tree and shrubs and the lake and the signal tower ( way in the distance) that gives it sense of place, of hope in things to come. #chicago #uptown #montrosepark #winter #original tumblr photographers #contemplitivephotography #visiodivina (at Montrose Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cmt2e1WLWaJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

You know me
Tumblr media
Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother’s womb. I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made! I worship in adoration—what a creation! You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from…

I was drawn outside by the sun set lit clouds to discover that in the time it took me to grab my gear and get outside the clouds had blown far out over the lake. So I turned around and walked toward the sun hoping get some dramatic shadows on the sidewalk under the “EL”. I was to late for that too. I did have the last golden rays of light raking across the semi-polished surfaces Wilson Station. The light on the sidewalk disappearing as I worked. What I thought I wanted was not,in the end, what I was given. What I got was better. Is that not what it is to trust the Father of glory, to follow the footsteps of His son.

Discovering infrared …handheld means less motion blur from wind blown foliage. Montrose Park beach is only 3 blocks from my home so maybe that is why it is my favorite beach. I love my neighborhood, Uptown. I love hearing languages in the street that I do not understand. It is perhaps exotic. I seem to have a lot of friends that have and do travel the globe. That is exotic. For me travel has taken me to Florida and Canada and places in between. So for me my beach is exotic. I love the people that come to my beach that are not like me. I watch them and think I like how they celebrate or just hangout enjoying nature’s anti- depressant. And I particularly find it pleasantly disturbing when old cultures run into the young and trendy pop culture. I love that they feel the freedom to enjoy the beach without having to conform or show contempt for pop culture because a) it is exotic. B) I think pop culture needs a little reminder that while fashion is fun it is as the teacher says “ only vanity”. It does occur to me that it is perhaps us who seem exotic and perhaps a little scary like peacocks in a mating ritual. (Well not me I dress like a H.Bosh peasant most of the time and that is scary enough. ) So we are the same as much as we are different. I love my neighbors.

For the artist interested in creating the idea of God through their art, this concept of aligning one’s daily actions with spiritual practice easily welcomes the studio. #visiodivina, #artandtheology,#sacredart, #seeingGod melahlborn.com/blog https://www.instagram.com/p/CL2JFhmAqN9/?igshid=1xloham2994o4
