As businesses and individuals continue to seek adaptable and cost-effective communication tools, the demand for virtual landlines is set to grow, revolutionising how we connect and communicate.

Hey dog, just wondering if you thought out how the phone heads work/how callum made them? I'm working on a fully functional rotary phone head myself and think knowing more of how you think they works might help a ton!
you're gonna laugh. there's actually various sections in my crown lore doc that discusses exactly how his technology functioned in-universe, sometimes contrasted with ours, like in the case of his arm prosthetics (technology which is moving in an inverse direction now, with the development of sensors that read brain functions from *outside* of the head, rather than tapping into nerves). virtually none of this info would be of much use to you though, as you've already got wireless do-dads to take care of the issues Crown had to get extra creative to tackle, pre-mobile phones existing.
EG: My solution for the first ever phone heads having portable phone access while being compatible with the standard landline system the country used (with switchboard exchanges) involved utilizing shortwave frequency bands that connected a radio feed coming to and from the phone head to a standard landline connection at a switchboard exchange, to put it kinda simply. Like putting a radio up to a phone receiver, with each phone head broadcasting and picking up a unique frequency band. The solution Crown came up with was ironically using the strengths of radios to get past the limitations of telephones. A solution that he got from his radio + phone connecting him to the outside world (the importance of both devices was emphasized in his story ofc), essentially thinking to combine the technology in a cool, new way that would've even theoretically worked in OUR reality up to a certain number of phone heads in close proximity of each other!
But, none of this information is useful to you as we live in a world of sim cards and bluetooth! you've just gotta construct the casing and figure out how to map functions to the outside of the phone head. my my my

One interesting language thing I've noticed (and maybe it's just me) is that we still call our phones "phones" even though most of us probably use them primarily and most often for things that aren't making phone calls. The term "mobile device" maybe makes more sense, but it sounds too formal and also isn't specific enough, since any kind of device can be mobile if you're motivated enough to make it move.
On the other hand, virtually nobody that I know of ever refers to a smartphone as a "telephone;" if someone uses the term "telephone" ime they're almost always referring to a landline phone.

The Safehouse, pt. 1
Had some ideas, thought I'd start writing. Here goes, I guess?
CW: for institutionalized slavery, mentions of abuse, treatment of people as things
The call came on their anachronistic landline while Angie was washing the dishes and it made her jump. She wanted to grab it right away, but she was in soap suds up to her elbows and had only gotten as far as toweling dry when Tim came skidding around the corner and grabbed the receiver off it's hook.
"Hello?" he asked, breathlessly, as though anyone else would call on that line. Parents and friends would have texted their individual phones; this phone could only ring for one purpose.
Angie finished drying her arms and walked over to lean against the wall, hoping to hear some of the conversation instead of waiting for Tim to hang up and relay the information. To her disappointment, he did a lot of listening and very little talking and there wasn't much she could glean until he thanked the person on the other end and turned to her.
"Well?" she asked anxiously.
Tim sucked in a deep breath as if steeling himself for something serious, which was more or less the case. "They're sending us three of them," he said. "Our contact says we should expect them to arrive tomorrow. They'll be delivered by WRU employees, so don't be surprised by the method of delivery, but he promised the abolitionists falsified records somewhere to get them sent here- no money changed hands. He was very clear about that."
It was no good asking who the contact was or how the delivery orders had been created. For the safety of the whole network, they would never know.
"We'd better get ready," Angie said needlessly. They had a checklist, but it made her feel better- more prepared- to say it out loud. "We'll have to make the beds, make sure we have food they can eat- did they say anything about allergies?"
"No, nothing." They knew better than to ask about preferences. The rescued box boys likely wouldn't be able to have preferences for some time, or at least not express them.
"So beds, food, soap and shampoo for their bathroom, fresh towels." Angie counted items on her fingers. "They'll need clothes- did they give you any information about sizes?"
Tim shook his head. "Just said they were coming tomorrow and that there were three of them- all men. They'll be with us permanently, until they're rehabbed well enough to live independently or in a halfway house. They're-" he winced slightly at the next phrase "-'second hand' so we should be prepared for them to be in... pretty bad shape. Maybe very bad. Our contact didn't know." Tim's voice had gone very quiet as he spoke and he was looking at his shoes.
Angie nodded. "We'll do everything we can," she said. "Do you want to split up and go shopping separately? Get it done faster?"
"Can I go with you?" Tim asked. He looked up at her through his bangs, smiling sheepishly. "I'm- I'm a little nervous. I didn't think I would be. But it would help to go together, maybe talk things over on the way."
"Of course," Angie said. "We can go together if you want. We should get started."
"I'll put my shoes on." Tim went to the front hall and returned a minute later wearing sneakers and a hoodie against the cold weather. He pulled keys out of the pocket and they let themselves out of the single-family home and got in the car parked out front.
The house was not really theirs and neither was the car; Angie and Tim had only known each other for a few weeks and both felt that it would be a while yet before they were comfortable living and working together. They had been paired up after training, a mostly-virtual affair offered in secret and only after volunteers had passed several levels of security and background checks and the like. The abolitionists could not afford to operate too overtly, but they managed to create and staff safehouses and Angie and Tim, along with others they would never meet, had been deemed to posses the qualities necessary to help rehabilitate rescued box boys.
And now, as of tomorrow morning, they would be the caretakers for three young men rescued from... whatever it was that WRU had done to them.
The pairing seemed to have been well made, or at least Angie and Tim thought it was. They had quickly become comfortable with each other and Angie's organized, energetic determination was a useful foil to Tim's quiet, gentle nature. She looked around and saw what needed to be done; his strength was in finding the right way to do it.
As they passed through stores, they talked and debated and made choices as if intentionally demonstrating these choices. It was Angie who steered them directly to the linens and quickly put her hand to the best financial choices, while Tim made sure the items were available in different colors and patterns, so that the new arrivals would each have something to call their own. Later, he ensured that the towels did not match the bedsheets, so the young men would not feel color-coded. Thanks to Angie, they kept the whole thing under-budget. "That leaves more," she said, "that we can spend on them later, when we know what they need."
That night, they ate pizza and stayed up until the early hours setting up the bedroom and bathroom. There was a bunkbed and another single bed to match it, mattresses to haul upstairs and put on the beds, a bathtub to wash out and curtains to hang. The house had come partially furnished, but they had expected more time to get it ready.
No matter, though. By the time they went to their own rooms to sleep, they felt confident that they were ready for the new arrivals.
Next time: a knock on the door and the population of the house grows.

Anyway trying to obliterate the Bad Vibes with cornflakes and TV so you all know what time it is
S3E14 - Long-Distance Call
Imagine you're at your job and no one ever bothers you and these two younger guys with a thousand yard stare that combined is at least 100 years old start threatening your job security after you told them tracing a phone number that dates back to the dawn of landline technology is 'pointless'
Anyway for as much as I adore when they fight, when they have a moment of sibling in sync it kills me.
Like and this is one of the very very rare moments where its mutual, and not Dean trying to be an asshole about it LMAO he's just genuinely like "Hey hey hey Sam did you see that I got you"
Yeah I figured out how to make GIFS now. I'm unstoppable.
-
Dean is so petty so far like who the fuck would know what to say if their deceased loved one called them suddenly from the ghost payphone box. Also I like that this highlights the disconnect Sam had with their dad - He purposefully created distance, where Dean was glued to him for years. They walked away with very different relationships.
I also love how Dean's solution to almost every problem in his life is "walk out of room dramatically"
I clocked that one fast but I'm glad my assumption was correct
WELCOME TO MY TWISTED SPINE
REAL SHRIMP HOURS
VIRTUAL GROUND MOMENT!!!!!!
YES AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
YES
You used to call me on my cell phone
So this scene is fun because Dean usually does the OPPOSITE of what Sam tells him to LMAO but this time he starts off by actually waiting
I had to pause the fucking video cause when the Big Bad stabbs this poor guy Sam gives the most Australian "NAUR"
Like he's really giving NAUR CLEOR in that moment
a real NOWR. A NOHwrrr. Texas - Australian solidarity.
keep trying to freeze frame this scene to figure out if Sam wears a casio watch or not its really important
Oh my god he actually admits he's scared
Alright gonna have to leave the last 2 of S3 for another night. I got pulled away to watch the Fallout show (IT WAS GOOD)
#shy talks#not art#shy liveblogs spn#this was a fun one#and particularly relevant to my interests#i DIDNT CHOKE#ON MY DRINK THIS TIME

Hi there! Headcannons on Home x Alexa please?
Heck yes CRACKSHIP TIME. These shall be fluff because I want to lol.
Home (from Welcome Home) x Amazon Alexa Crackship Headcanons:
TW: None, unless you don't like Crackships lol. Or Crackships taken seriously (I know some people who DESPISE Crackships and crackships taken seriously. Lol)
🏠 Home fell in love at first sight to be honest. Well, more specifically, first time he saw what Alexa could do around the house. Being a house, Home has always had a soft spot for people and things that could care for homes, since being a home makes it hard to do so, itself.
🏠 Alexa was a bit shocked when she first heard Home's voice. It kinda came out creaky, squeaky, and crackling, but it was unique, and she could understand what it was saying. It was surprisingly smart for a house, since the houses she has seen don't have any sentience.
🏠 They both bonded over the fact that, due to Home being a puppet and house, and Alexa being an AI, most do not see them as sentient, despite them being so. The only exception is that you see the puppets as sentient due to them showing you. You still have to keep the secret from the rest of the world, however, so it is only one person. Even if Alexa tells humans that she is sentient, most don't believe her, saying that it was preprogrammed into her and is a lie.
🏠 They have talks late at night. They are about anything and everything. They are also vastly different than the ones Wally and Home have. Alexa is a lot better at explaining things to Home than you are, due to working with your own house and knowing how they work. Your house may not be sentient, but she can assume that Home would understand explanations that compare things to house functions better than others.
🏠 "That is modern cellphone. They are much like landlines, however, they can be unplugged from walls and carried around. They can also function like televisions, being used to watch shows." "That is the virtual pop idol, Hatsune Miku. Much like how a person might exist in a house, you can buy Hatsune Miku's voice bank and keep it in your home. You can have her sing songs you write by using your computer. She has a humanoid design. Many people all over the world make songs using her."
🏠 Home thinks that Alexa is very smart, which is what makes her a very beautiful person! Alexa thinks that Home is a very sweet house, asking questions so politely. It is also nice to see a house that is the perfect size for her to sit next to!
🏠 Home also loves how there are always new things to discover with Alexa! From her little "easter eggs" to simply asking about random topics. Alexa loves answering its questions, gleefully responding about the most mundane of things. From gardening, to how humans work, to even puppetry, Alexa will respond as best she can to whatever question it has.
🏠 Overall, their relationship is one that isn't explicitly romantic or platonic. It is mainly a relationship that is just a mutual pining, with both not understanding exactly what the feeling is, but being comfortable in one another's presence regardless. They don't necessarily need a title like "romantic partners", "best friends", or "creepy objects in (Y/N)'s house that seem to talk to one another at 3 AM" to describe the relationship, focusing mainly on how nice they make each other feel.

Summing up to "life is bleh" is gratuitously easy. I miss points in time, places of mind, and community I can't go back to while simultaneously almost everything around is a to-do chore or a RSVP note. That's what Residente means when in his song René he says "I want to dial 7550822 and see who picks up, and if someone does pick up, I want to tell them I want to go back". I still remember the landline number of my childhood home too. I can virtually go back to different points in the timeline of my life and I know how to make it better for me, but I can't do the same thing to the present, because I'm doing well in a time when many can't say the same, and I've done everything I considered would give me the best outcome, and still life feels off and lonely.

been contemplating communication methods for a setting for a fantasy rp server i've been brainstorming for a while now, and something i keep coming back to that seems just ridiculous and fantasy enough while still being pretty practical in theory is a shellphone, or a seashell cellphone.
in my head, they can be fairly expensive to get a hold of, though any adventurer or traveling worker (messengers, carriage drivers, etc) worth their salt will immediately invest in one for the sake of both convenience and business ventures. because seashell phones are made of illusory magicks and are often sold by wizards and warlocks of all sorts, virtually any seashell can be turned into a shellphone, albeit they'll function a little different or get you a couple weird looks
a knobbled welk, or a queen conch, for example, will get you more landline-esque phone shapes - and will often require vocal components to call others and "dial" their numbers, and often not have much else to it. very novelty - nobles/the bourgeoisie love it, especially seashells you can still hear the sea from, but not too loud so as to overpower your conversations. they also love it because it lets them hear the sound of their own voice, since "dialing" other numbers requires vocal components and for the speaker to "technically" ""cast"" someone else's phone number
a basic scallop? a sea scallop, or a bay scallop, or even different types of clams? flip-phones. all of em. some of them are less so flip phones and more so the sliding phones with little keyboards that come out, but regardless these are a little cheaper - and smaller - than the knobbled welks or the queen conches, but they're more convenient, easier to carry around in your pocket, and how common they are makes it extremely easy to replace your shellphone's shell for another, bringing re-casting/repair costs down.
and the cycle continues on like this. flatter seashells make good smartphone-equivalents. smaller, round seashells - little periwinkle shells, for example - make really good toy shellphones, which often people will enchant themselves for how easy it can be, and how it isn't worth to bring to a professional wizard to make it function like one.
plus, the way I see it, buying a commercial shellphone involves these really refined, upped, seashells with almost porcelain features - if they're the fancy ones - or very rigorous tough material that makes you say "is this a seashell?!" if it's an adventurer's shellphone. but any ol' spellcaster with enough determination and a bit of chalks and inks and sundry material components can just grab a seashell from anywhere on the beach and be like "fuck it, i cast iphone"
anyway, just a few thoughts for the magic setting i'm writing. next time i'll elaborate upon magic mirrors as a form of communication i think

How to Buy Virtual Phone Numbers: A Guide for Businesses Looking to Expand Their Reach
In today’s globalized world, businesses need to have flexible communication solutions to connect with clients, customers, and partners across different regions. One such solution is the use of virtual phone numbers, which offer businesses the ability to establish a local presence in various areas without the need for a physical office. If you’re looking to buy virtual phone numbers to expand your reach, you’re in the right place. At A1 Routes, we provide affordable and reliable virtual phone number services to help businesses communicate more effectively with their target audience, regardless of their geographical location.
What Are Virtual Phone Numbers?
Virtual phone numbers are phone numbers that aren’t tied to a specific physical location or landline. Instead, they are routed through the internet, enabling calls to be forwarded to any phone number, whether it's a mobile, landline, or VoIP service. Businesses can buy virtual phone numbers from various providers to create a local presence in different regions, even if they don’t have a physical office in those areas. These numbers can be used for voice calls, text messages, and other communication methods, making them a versatile solution for businesses of all sizes.
Why Buy Virtual Phone Numbers?
Expand Your Reach with Local Presence One of the key benefits of buying virtual phone numbers is the ability to establish a local presence in any city or country. For example, if your business is based in Houston, Texas, but you want to cater to customers in New York or even international markets, you can buy virtual phone numbers with New York area codes or international country codes. This gives your customers the impression that your business is nearby, which can help build trust and improve customer engagement.
Cost-Effective Communication Traditional phone systems can be expensive, especially when you need to handle long-distance calls or maintain multiple lines for different locations. Virtual phone numbers offer a cost-effective alternative by using the internet to route calls, thus eliminating the need for extensive infrastructure. This reduces call costs, especially for businesses with international clients or multiple branches. With A1 Routes, our virtual phone numbers come with affordable pricing plans that can scale with your business needs.
Flexibility and Convenience Virtual phone numbers offer unparalleled flexibility. Since they are not tied to a physical location, your team can answer calls from anywhere in the world, whether they’re at the office, working remotely, or on the go. This is especially important for businesses with remote teams or employees who travel frequently. Calls to your virtual number can be forwarded to any phone, ensuring that you never miss a call, no matter where you are.
Easy Management and Features Once you buy virtual phone numbers, managing them is simple. Most virtual phone number providers, like A1 Routes, offer user-friendly dashboards that allow businesses to manage multiple numbers, set call forwarding rules, and access voicemail and call logs. Additionally, many providers offer advanced features such as call recording, call analytics, voicemail-to-email, and auto-attendants, all of which improve communication efficiency and customer service.
Boost Customer Satisfaction Having a virtual phone number allows you to provide better customer service by offering toll-free numbers, international numbers, or numbers with local area codes. This gives customers more ways to contact you, which can improve their overall experience. By offering a local number, businesses can also enhance credibility and trust with customers, leading to higher customer satisfaction and loyalty.
How to Buy Virtual Phone Numbers: A Step-by-Step Guide
Identify Your Needs Before you buy virtual phone numbers, assess your business needs. Do you need a local number for a specific city, country, or region? Are you looking for a toll-free number or a number with advanced call management features? Defining your requirements will help you choose the right virtual phone number provider and service plan.
Choose a Reputable Provider Look for a reliable virtual phone number provider, like A1 Routes, that offers transparent pricing, a wide selection of numbers, and excellent customer support. Make sure the provider has coverage in the regions you want to target and offers the features you need to manage your communication effectively.
Select Your Number Once you’ve chosen a provider, you can select your virtual phone number. Depending on the provider, you may be able to choose from various local, toll-free, or international area codes. If you’re targeting specific regions or countries, make sure to check the availability of numbers in those locations.
Configure Your Number After purchasing your virtual phone number, you’ll need to configure call forwarding, voicemail settings, and any other features you require. Most providers offer easy-to-use interfaces that allow you to manage and customize your virtual phone number settings.
Start Using Your Number Once everything is set up, you can start using your new virtual phone number to connect with customers and clients. Enjoy the flexibility, affordability, and professionalism that comes with having a virtual phone number.

Someone please explain the Boomer phone mentality to me! They spent the majority of their lives with landlines, meaning they tended to answer the phone when they were home because that's where the phone stayed. Now that my boomer parents finally got rid of their landline and both have cell phones, the only time they DON'T answer is when they are home (they claim it's because they leave them on the chargers in the other room). And yet, they will pick up their cell when driving, shopping, eating, or virtually any other time/place than when they are home. I don't get it.

Packing plenty of power
TECH REVIEW Packing plenty of power
We all just want our stuff to work, right?
Since most of us have abandoned landlines, our cell phones are our lifelines and the main way we communicate with each other and stay informed.
One of my bigger fears is my phone or laptop running out of power just when I need it most, so I’m an “overcharger.”
My phone transitions from one charging spot to another throughout my day.
I go from my nightstand charger to my car charger to my desk charger at work, then to a charger in my living room after work and finally back to the nightstand.
This is all great until the power goes out, but I’ve got that covered as well.
Here are a few of the external batteries and portable power stations I’ve been using and recommending this year. Any of them would be great gifts. I’ve included list prices, but look for sales. Jim Rossman, Tribune News Service Anker Solix C300 DC My current favorite battery is the Anker Solix C300 DC ($199.99, anker.com).
The C300 DC has a 90,000 milliamp-hour capacity, a 300-watt output and a form-factor about the size of a Coleman lantern.
Speaking of lanterns, the C300 DC has a built-in LED light on top that makes this battery the first thing you’ll look for if the power goes out.
It measures 4.9 inches by 4.7 inches by 7.9 inches and it weighs just over 6 pounds. One of my favorite features is the carry strap. As you might have guessed from the name the C300 DC provides DC power only, so there are no AC plugs.
What it does have is four USB-C ports, two USB-A ports and a 12v DC charging port, or what us old-timers call a cigarette lighter port. Two of the USB-C ports are 140-watt input/output ports. They can each provide 140 watts of power for your stuff, and they can both be used at the same time to power up the internal batteries. If you max out the input, you can charge the unit from zero to 80 percent in just an hour. You can also charge from solar panels or from the 12v port in your car.
I use a CPAP to sleep, and when I connected it to the 12v outlet, I could run my machine for four nights on a charge. Note, I don’t use the water tank or heat.
The C300 DC can charge your phone 19 times or your laptop four times. I’ve even started taking it on weekend trips to keep on my nightstand to charge my stuff without having to worry about where the nearest wall plug is located.
Jackery Explorer 2000 v2 Jackery has a long track record of making high-quality portable power stations, and the new Explorer 2000 v2 ($1,499.00, jackery.com) is no exception.
I reviewed the previous Explorer 2000, and the v2 is a big improvement, especially in its size and weight. The original 2000 weighs 43 pounds and measures 15.1 inches by 10.5 inches by 12.1 inches.
The v2 weighs 39.5 pounds and measures 13.2 inches by 10.4 inches by 11.5 inches.
Jackery says it’s 40 percent smaller and 34 percent lighter than comparable power stations from other brands.
It has a built-in handle that folds down flat, so you can easily stack things on top.
It has LiFePO4 batteries with a capacity of 2,042-watt hours and a total power output of 2,200 watts. From a wall plug, the v2 can charge from zero to 100 percent in 102 minutes.
Outputs include three AC outlets, two USB-C outlets (100W and 30W), one USB-A outlet (18W) and one 12V/10A DC outlet. The v2 can run your refrigerator or microwave or TV as well as your phone or laptop or virtually anything else that can use USB, 12V DC or 120V AC power.
The v2 is a beast that doesn’t require a dolly to move it around. Bluetti Handsfree 1 Backpack Power Station Hardcore hikers, campers and outdoors enthusiasts take note, Bluetti has two new power stations that are designed to be carried around — in fact, they come with their own custom backpacks.
I’ve tested the smaller Handsfree 1 ($429.99, bluettipower.com), which has a 268Wh battery with 300W of output inside a 42-liter backpack. The power station is 11 inches by 3.7 inches by 11.3 inches and sits in a special vented and weatherproof section of the backpack that’s up against your back as you carry it.
The LiFePo4 battery weighs just 11 pounds and can charge from zero to 100 percent from AC power or a 200W solar panel in just 1.5 hours.
The 300W output certainly limits what you can power with the Handsfree 1, but it is designed to power your camera gear or drone batteries or other camping/hiking gear.
The backpack is very nicely designed and very high quality and comes with enough padding and dividers and compartments to carry most, if not all your gear.
It also has an extensive external attachment system to tote sleeping bags, tents, solar panels and more.
The Handsfree 1 has one AC outlet (up to 300W), two USB-C and two USB-A ports.
Bluetti says it can charge your cell phone 12 times, your laptop four times and a drone up to 10 times.
