Anyone who balks at the notion of inclusion and diversity, or thinks that it's difficult to show balance and fairness in children's stories should perhaps take a page from the work of beloved children's author-illustrator Virginia Lee Burton. Because way back over 75 years ago, Burton published the wonderful "Katy and the Big Snow" (1943) about a hardworking tractor who pushed a bulldozer in summer and a snowplow in winter, who saved THE WHOLE CITY from the dangers of a terrible snowstorm with her sheer might and force of will ... and who was most decidedly and unequivocally FEMALE. Not much is often made of this, given that Katy isn't human, but given the era it is, frankly, groundbreaking. Sometimes the simplest stories are also the most thought-provoking. Virginia Burton's "The Little House" (1942), about how the world changes around a small family home through the years, is a gorgeous example of this. While Burton herself claimed that it was not meant to be a critique of urbanisation, but rather was intended to evoke the passage of time for a young audience, nonetheless there are lessons to be learned as we see this country cottage encroached upon by roads and buildings, and eventually overtaken by them.
