Violetta Zironi & Tom Wlaschiha talk Rose Island, their new Netflix drama
“ Violetta Zironi & Tom Wlaschiha are interviewed for the new Netflix Original film Rose Island. The film stars Elio Germano, Matilda De Angelis, Leonardo Lidi, Tom Wlaschiha, Alberto Astorri, Violetta Zironi, François Cluzet, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, and Luca Zingaretti. It was directed and co-written by Sydney Sibilia with co-writer Francesca Manieri.
It tells the story of an idealistic engineer builds his own island off the Italian coast and declares it a nation, drawing the world’s attention. Values are tested when the Italian Government declares him an enemy, but to change the world risks must be taken. Stefan Pape is our interviewer.
Plot: Giorgio, a gifted yet misunderstood engineer has hit rock bottom - he’s been fired from his job, his parents won’t speak to him, and the love of his life has ditched him after he accidentally gets them both arrested (long story…). Sick of the stuffy rules of Italian society of the late 60s, Giorgio hatches an impossible plan; he will build his own island in the middle of the sea. Joined by a team of revolutionaries and outcasts, the Republic of Rose Island is founded, independence is declared and Giorgio is appointed President. However, team values and resilience are tested, as the Italian Prime Minister decides Giorgio’s idealistic island is Italy’s Enemy Number One. Directed by Sydney Sibilia (The Smetto Quando Voglio trilogy) and produced by Grøenlandia (The First King), ROSE ISLAND is a hilarious drama with a rebellious heart and is based on the incredible true story. ROSE ISLAND will launch on Netflix on 9th December 2020 #RoseIsland #Netflix #ViolettaZironi #TomWlaschiha”

Violetta Zironi shares final single ‘lonely window’ from her new EP
After touring with Don McLean, Nathan Ball, Luke Sital-Singh at the end of last year and starting the year off playing Eurosonic Festival, Violetta Zironi now releases her new single ‘lonely window’ - a melancholic serenade with that touch of dreaminess that will take you away.
‘lonely window’ is part of her second EP, scenes from my lonely window also out now, which includes the songs ‘Oasis’, ‘Little Wound’ & ‘One More Goodbye’. The EP consists of four songs that each tell a story of longing for love, the struggles of long distance and an honest realization about how difficult but beautiful love can be at the same time.
The EP opens a new chapter in Violetta Zironi’s life and also reveals the experiences that have accompanied Violetta throughout the last years since the release of her debut EP Half Moon Lane and her international tours.

I was introduced to Violetta Zironi through a friend a few years ago when he sent me a video of her singing Crazy Fool with Jack Savoretti and ever since then I have been a fan. One More Goodbye is an acoustic folk track that allows Violetta’s enchanting voice to take centre stage, every time I hear her sing I feel like there should be birds flying into my bedroom helping me get dressed. With only the guitar backing Violetta’s vocal the track has an intimate feel that assists the storytelling within the track, making it feel like you’re sitting down with someone and listening to them tell you a story from their past.

In Photos: Tom James, Violetta Zironi and Jon & Roy @ Badeschiff Sessions
Time flies, huh? I haven’t shared any photos from the last Badehaus Sessions and the next one will be on Sunday already! Well, first I tell you how awesome the last one was and then the details about the next one. I saw Tom James again. It was once again beautiful but this time he seemed much more relaxed that the last time. Might have been the sand - a natural habitat for everyone who is surfing, right? He played some songs of his newest mini album “Limbo” and even listening to it now it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Basically the opposite of Violetta Zironi who seemed always a bit aloof during her set. I found it a bit hard to connect with her music. She is Italian, making music like straight out of Nashville but the one song where I thought she was a bit more approachable and also showed a bit more of her voice was a cover of her favorite Italian song. It was the one moment when she used her range as if all limitations went away. That was beautiful. Jon and Roy played a fun, dance in the sand and sing a long set, actually more fun and energetic than I expected them to be. I thought they were a bit quieter and maybe one of those Folk bands you prefer to watch while sitting. Totally wrong, I was just totally wrong. Their energy on stage is simply infectious. I didn’t felt this when I listen to their songs beforehand. Occasionally they were bringing a trombone player on stage - a perfect addition to their sound. Just the set was a tad too short. I really miss the times when there wasn’t a strict 10 pm rule. Anyways. It was short and sweet and from now on I won’t be so stupid anymore to miss any of their Berlin gigs.
Here are some photos from that wonderful summer evening with only light rain towards the end (But I’m a pro when it comes to taking photos while holding an umbrella):

Getting To Know...
Violetta Zironi
Violetta Zironi started writing her first songs at the age of 16. After gigging with a country/blues trio in bars and festivals around the North of Italy, her name got heard and she signed a label deal that aimed to turn her into the next Italian pop star. After a few singles had been released, Violetta realized, that the songs she was singing, didn’t represent who she wanted to be. She decided to turn her back on that path and start a new independent journey with the music she wanted to share. Being on the road, she developed what is now her own sound, which derived from different influences of folk, Americana and country music, whilst embracing her European and Mediterranean roots.
In 2014 she opened up for the legend Ben E. King, who then invited her on stage with him for a duet of 'Stand by Me'. The following year she met English/Italian songwriter Jack Savoretti and supported him as a special guest on his European tour.
In 2016 she left Italy to live in London and Berlin, playing gigs, traveling back and forth and writing her songs on the train. During the summer of the same year she left for a long journey across Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas. A relaxing and illuminating journey where she came across amazing musicians who she played and wrote songs with.
All of those adventures gave her inspiration for her new single and the following EP Half Moon Lane, from the name of the road where she lived in London. Check out the video for 'Half Moon Lane' below.
We had a chat with Violetta about her influences, ‘Half Moon Lane’, performing live and her plans for the future. Read it below.
You're already a huge star in Italy having won third place on their seventh season of X Factor and supporting and performing with Jack Savoretti on the Italian leg of his Written In Scars tour. What has made you want to take your music to an international level?
“After doing all the experience as a musician in Italy I realized that I wanted to take my music to an international level. Nowadays it is very difficult to make a living out of being an artist, especially if we lock ourselves up into a single market. Italy is a small country, and its music industry doesn't export abroad. therefore, unless you are a super pop star, it's almost impossible to survive as an artist. So after meeting and gigging with Jack Savoretti, I started travelling towards the UK and Germany, where I then built my team. I find German and British audiences very perceptive and eager to listen to new artists, no matter where they come from.”
For any readers out there that may not have heard of you, how would you describe your sound? Who or what have the biggest influence on your music?
“I like to define my sound as something that talks directly to the listener, focused around the song itself, and my voice. I like to call it authentic. I love country and folk American music, but I keep in my heart my European roots, the beautiful Italian songs from the 60's, and I'm always trying to express what I like and what I am in my songs.
“A man of inspiration for me is Morricone, with his spaghetti western soundtracks. He created a genre from scratch, writing songs for western films but with an Italian approach.”
Tell us a bit about your latest track 'Half Moon Lane'. What was the inspiration behind the song and how is it different from your previous releases?
The recent single I released, ‘Half Moon Lane,’ was completely acoustic, just guitar and vocals, with the aim of being completely sincere to the listeners, like if I was having a conversation with them. In the past years I have released songs under the guide of different people who thought they were telling me to do the right thing, but I never felt entirely represented by those songs. I was with a big record label, who wanted to make me a big pop star, but that didn't allow me to express myself through my own written songs.
“‘Half Moon Lane’ talks about the feeling you have when you take off from the nest and decide to find your own way, a mix between excitement for the future, and homesickness. But after, you realize you always carry in your heart your home, and its memory defines who you are, and makes you stronger to face new adventures.”
You have a lot of experience with performing. What's your favourite thing about performing live? Do you prefer performing in more intimate venues or to larger crowds?
“I find the best thing about performing live is the relationship created with the audience. It's not easy to find the ideal situation, where people listen to you interested like you were telling them a story. but when it happens (and I'd say it's easier to happen in intimate venues) it's just like magic. And than you start feeling that people listening are giving you the power to perform. I think it's a constant exchange of energy.”
You've collaborated with some great artists already. Who else would you love to collaborate with in the future and why?
“Well there are many artists who I would love to collaborate with! Some of them would be a childhood dream come true, for example Norah Jones, or Emmylou Harris. I am a big fan of George Ezra, I love his songs and his sound, as well as his unbelievably unique voice. I love his bluesy style, but very romantic and sweet at the same time, and it would be amazing to sing a song with him!”
Do you have any advice for young aspiring musicians?
“The main thing I could say to young aspiring musicians is to be themselves. It will happen all the time that people will tell you what to do, and sometimes you will have to do as they say, but always try not to go against who you are, because if you do, it won't last long. Second main thing, a smile on your face always helps.”
Finally, what has been the best part of your journey so far and what are your plans for the future?
“The best part of my journey so far has been the last year. I was able to travel the world and meet all kinds of people, so different from each other and from me, but so beautiful and exciting. People are my main inspiration.
“I will record an EP in Berlin this summer, and the plan is to start promoting it and hopefully continue travelling, singing and playing my guitar with musicians over the world!”
