Propaganda
Norma Shearer (Marie Antoinette, The Women)— First Jewish woman to win an Oscar for her acting!! She pioneered stronger, more independent and complicated roles for women onscreen. One film historian described her as "the exemplar of sophisticated modern womanhood and ... the first American film actress to make it chic and acceptable to be single and not a virgin on screen."
Hazel Scott (Broadway Rhythm, Rhapsody in Blue)—ok ok let me tell you about Hazel Scott. She was a Trinidadian piano genius. By the age of 3 she could play the piano by ear. She would play jazzed-up versions of classics in nightclubs and could sing too! She appeared in five movies, and used her influence as a piano prodigy to improve Black representation in film—she turned down offensive parts, demanded equal pay, and always wore her own costumes to ensure she was portrayed as glamorous and beautiful. She was the first African-American woman to host her own television show, The Hazel Scott Show. She stood up for civil rights and was an overall icon! If you want to watch her being a genius, here she is playing two pianos at once. And here's this one that shows off her consummate glamor! [videos beneath the cut]
This is round 3 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

Norma Shearer:
Tumblr media
She got into showbiz on a technicality, there was a line of 60 girls to pick from, the studio needed 8 and she was second from last. She coughed loudly and then stood up and grinned when the casting director looked over at her, and he let her in because it made him laugh. After that there was several years of hard work before she landed her first movie. Where she had been repeatedly put down for her face in silent film, he was praised for her voice when the talkies first came about. She was most in her element in the pre-code era, when she played the strong, graceful, self-sufficient type of woman and she won the academy award for best actress in The Divorcee in 1930. She directly competed with greats like Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford for the rest of the 30s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She just epitomizes Old Hollywood to me and seems criminally underrated these days

Short-haired, modern woman, pre-code queen

someone call the fire department because this woman is H-O-T HOT!! Three chilis and a warning label hot!! Ever-burning passion HOT!!! But also glam and elegant and gorgeous (the side profile portrait is the most beautiful picture of any person ever)... she has the range

discs of two types.
After my normal warm up of 2 hours I played a few special discs.
First I did a TELARC CD of Music by Ferde Grofe'. He did a lot of arranging with George Gershwin. He also did his own stuff including one of my favorites "The Grand Canyon Suite".
TELARC CDs are very good. End to end digital recordings. They also brag that there is no equalization or compression on the CD, and no transformers in the line. Yes they are audiophile grade. My Carmina Burana is also a TELARC CD. They pioneered full digital recording long ago for LPs if you can believe it. They liked to show off.
One aspect of the technical showing off on the G.C. Suite is a digital recording of real thunder. There is a storm sequence in the suite. There are warnings about possible damage to equipment if played too loud. It is an alternate take on the usual symphony orchestra big drum used when real thunder is not available.
Tumblr media
Cute warning label there.
Interesting that the ARC tube amp ran out of power for that big boom.
The big drum cut on track 10 was really good and deep and very convincing. When I played the real thunder alternative on track 12 it wimped out. Just not enough horsepower. The Franken-amp likes this cut.
Overall though it was a really good listen. Great image and sound stage and wonderful presentation of the timbre of instruments.
Of course the TELARC label is defunct now, but there are copies floating around. Worth getting.
I next played a couple of Steely Dan LPs. Black discs on the TT. First was Aja. The sound is 100% studio magic. It had great clarity and one track sounded better than I remembered it ever sounding. Side 2 track 1, "Peg". For the very first time I could hear the name "Peg" clearly pronounced. Usually it is lost in a complex mix of lead and background singers and some other stuff.
It may be a combination of fresh vacuum tubes and the microline stylus mounted on the AT7. Or it may just be the sharper stylus. I call it as just better.
Next up my recent purchase of "Gaucho". It is supposed to be a special audiophile pressing by the original label. I bought it from a fairly reliable vintage LP shop. It is clean and has good sound but is not a heavy LP like the Aja disc. Sounded very nice.
Steely Dan is notorious for Jazz influenced Pop/Rock, or is it rock influence Jazz? They are totally obsessed with sound and effects and spent many extra hours in the studio to get exactly what they were looking for. And of course they used lots of hard drugs. It was the 70s.
Since they were so obsessive the complexity of their records cannot be overstated. So for people obsessed with listening it is perfect.
I had to shut it down as the wife and I had to get out of the house. The weather has been epic. Wind and rain and all that. Get outside while you can. I also had to rake the leaves in the back yard. So no more tunes.
Wet leaves are hard to pick up you know.

190: White Noise // An Electric Storm
Tumblr media
An Electric Storm White Noise 1969, Island
I’ve read a decent amount on how White Noise’s An Electric Storm was made over the course of a year of painstakingly splicing tape by hand in a London flat, but not why they decided to make their pioneering electronic music opus so ooky-spooky. I guess when you coop up folks whose day job is making Dalek noises, youre going to get something a bit deranged. The opening side’s psych pop is jaunty enough, though there’s often something vacant-eyed in its whimsy, like a carnival in a Stephen King story: your ear is drawn to the incongruous details that hint at some darker working behind the cutesiness. It prepares you well for the flip, where across its 11-minute runtime “The Visitation” opens multiple echo chambers full of sobs, previews the next decade of horror film title themes, and digs pits of gurgling electronic unease that spored whole genres of dark ambient music still evolving to this day. The album ends on a literal (well, fake literal) Satanic ritual in the form of “Black Mass: An Electric Storm in Hell,” which turns jazz drummer Paul Lytton into the Jacob’s Ladder poster. Leader David Vorhaus likes to wryly shake his head recalling how the A&R people at Island Records didn’t “get it” when he turned in the LP, but even as someone who does “get it” I uh get why they didn’t!
youtube
An Electric Storm is chiefly discussed for the means of its production, and that’s fair: despite digital advances in recording technology that make the most advanced techniques found here (phasing, flanging, looping) virtually effortless, it is uncanny hearing them deployed so extensively on music of this vintage. It’s the equivalent of watching a film from the ‘60s and seeing effects that look like The Terminator. The music rarely goes more than a few bars before melting into some other shape (a melodic phrase begun on one instrument is spliced so it resolves on another; the music drops out entirely, replaced by a collage of ratcheting noises, electronic bloops and choking cries somewhere between anguish and laughter). By turning over a third of “My Game of Loving” to cringey orgasm sounds, they even initiate the nascent electronic pop genre into the elite fraternity of styles that are a little too eager to prove they fuck.
Tumblr media
The lyrics won’t win any prizes, but I do take issue with how dismissive some writers have been of these songs as songs. An Electric Storm is steeped in the psychedelic tropes of the day, but it doesn’t sound like the work of avid fans of like the Electric Prunes or whatever. One senses that Vorhaus and BBC Radiophonic Workshop regulars Delia Derbyshire and Hodgson have a general but disinterested notion of what the kids are into, and they feed it back to us through the filter of their own predilections. Derbyshire’s two co-writes in particular are anything but generic. The rippling transformations of “Love Without Sound” are as wondrous and eerie as a Winsor McCay Little Nemo strip, but it’s the opiated vocal by the otherwise unknown John Whitman and the strolling melody that ebbs in and out of the collage that give it a dreamy logic. “Firebird” has a Beach Boys-y bounce and gorgeously arranged harmonies to go with an array of synth tones so solid and colourful I want to play with them like toy blocks.
Though it didn’t set the charts ablaze, An Electric Storm developed a reputation as a tripper classic, and I was pretty psyched to find a copy in not too battered condition for a reasonable price at a shop this summer. I’m glad to have it on the shelf, and with the exception of the 45 seconds that makes my neighbours think I’m listening to weird and bad porn, I always enjoy the adventure when I get it on the table.

J Dilla: Lo-Fi Godfather
Tumblr media
J Dilla started his career in the early 1990s as a member of the group Slum Village. He quickly established himself as a talented producer and rapper, and soon became one of the most sought-after producers in the hip hop community. J Dilla's unique sound was characterized by his innovative use of samples, his intricate drum patterns, and his ability to seamlessly blend elements of soul, jazz, and funk into his beats. He was also known for his creative use of sound effects, such as tape hiss and crackling samples, which gave his music a raw, unpolished feel that was both nostalgic and futuristic.
J Dilla's influence on modern day beatmaking can be seen in the way that he transformed hip hop production. He was a pioneer in the use of sampling and layering, which he combined with his technical skills to produce beats that were ahead of their time. J Dilla's innovative approach to music production inspired countless musicians and producers to push the boundaries of what was possible in hip hop production. Many of today's top hip hop producers, including Madlib, Jazzy Jeff, and 9th Wonder, cite J Dilla as a major influence on their work.
J Dilla's impact on modern day beatmaking can also be seen in the way that he blended old and new elements in his music. He was known for his use of soul and jazz samples, which he expertly blended with his beats to create a sound that was both nostalgic and futuristic. This fusion of old and new elements, along with his signature sound, made J Dilla a cult figure in the hip hop community, who have continued to pay homage to his legacy through their music.
In addition to his impact on hip hop production, J Dilla was also a pioneering figure in the lo-fi musical genre. Lo-fi, which stands for low-fidelity, refers to a style of music production that emphasizes a raw, unpolished sound. J Dilla's use of tape hiss, crackling samples, and other elements of vintage recording techniques gave his music a unique and intimate feel that inspired a generation of lo-fi artists. Today, the lo-fi genre has become one of the most popular and influential musical styles, and J Dilla is remembered as one of its pioneers.
J Dilla's impact on modern day beatmaking and music production cannot be overstated. He was a visionary who pushed the boundaries of hip hop production and created a sound that was both innovative and timeless. Through his music, he left a lasting legacy that continues to inspire musicians and producers around the world, cementing his place as one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time.
Despite his untimely death in 2006, J Dilla's legacy continues to live on. His music has been re-released and remastered, and new generations of hip hop fans are discovering his work for the first time. J Dilla's influence can also be seen in the way that hip hop production has evolved over the years, with many of today's top producers drawing on his innovations and incorporating his signature.

Part 3 I'm almost done I hope. I'm being honest I spent 3 hours cooking in 4 hours sleeping after
Warabi: so this is the store pretty big
Neta: Oh yeah, It's a pretty big place I'm going to need a lot of vendors and more artists to sell here. My main worry is that I lose my brand and my image , If we started out with underground bands, alternative music like metal and rock. If I start selling mainstream stuff I don't want to come off as a sellout
Warabi: I don't think that's going to happen. It's not like you're going to stop selling underground stuff it's not like you're going to stop supporting them either. You're just expanding your business to a broader audience the fact, you're worrying about your image and your brand just shows that you still care about your original customers.
Oshi: That's some great advice ink drop!
Warabi: mom!!! Uhhh what are you doing here?.... I thought you were on whale back island.... To get away from the snow
Oshi: we were planning on doing that until you're wonderful boss invited us to the party. I just couldn't miss that right shim?
Shimi: [eating] how much was the caterer here? These stuffed tentacles are good! Melts in the mouth.... This is the store? really big. You sure you have enough stuff to sell in here or are you going to stock 10 Rows of belts and jewelry to fill space?
Warabi: dad! That's rude!
Shimi: It's a genuine question. Do you have a layout plan or anything? What's the look you're trying to do
Neta:my original store kind of has a basement/ attic-like design, old vintage t-shirts, guitars, vinyl. someone's garage type feel.
Oshi: Oh so nostalgia... I like that
Shimi: I know a lot of people who are very good in interior design... [ eating] we just got our vacation home remodeled...... I can see if I can give you his number. Tell him the octavios sent you. They'll give you a discount.
Neta: thank you Mr. Octavio. I deeply appreciate this
Shimi: well that should count as a frosty fest gift cuz we didn't get you anything we didn't think we had to
Neta: oh That's good because you didn't have to do that. .
Warabi: Dad,.... That are really nice moment and then you had to ruin it with the last- what the fuck?
Oshi: ink drop language!
Warabi: I'm sorry just give me one second....

Candi: Candi!?!
Candi: *gasp* oh my Cod! Shut the hell up. Are you kidding me? What are you doing here?!! Ahhhhhh
Candi: ahhhhhh Oh my god it's been so long!! girl What are you up to?
Candi: Oh you know. Just trying to survive.
Candi: I hear that, I hear that I looove makeup!
Candi: stop lying. I just smeared this shit on at the last minute hehehe you know I have no sense of time.
Mizole: I didn't know you knew each other. How do you know candi?
Candi: That's really none of your business
Candi: I don't have to tell you everything about my personal life. Go find Ichiya or something. Bye. Go.. cod that guy
Candi: Right.... He drives me out the wall everyday.
Candi: you know they dated?
Candi: hahaha Oh my Cod you have to tell me.... Oh crap...no no no ... I have to go. I'll be right back I promise. Just give me one sec girlie

Ikkan: so I yeah Mike Murrays actually played the sax around-
Baja: around 1989! But when Blue Ocean breeze came out-
Tao: He switched to a clarinet! It was like his staple instrument throughout the '90s.
Baja: He actually went through like five clarinets throughout those years. I think he's probably one of the most popular non-pop or rock idles out there.. but he's been gone for like 8 years and it somehow we still all know him
Ikkan: he Pioneered jazz..
Tao: oh yeah I'm a big fan of their later works it really influenced the ska genre
Ikkan: you see I used to dislike his later work when I saw The influencer had on other genre I took another like listen to it. It's really good! It's like an organized mess
Baja: right?! It's chaotic but smooth. He actually went to jelly Port for a tour and met up with Sting time stingers back in 01 which I guess gave him more of an influence to the newer albums
Tao: It's a Shame he died before they could release the album with the stingers I know there's a demo out there they release but it's hard to find
Ikkan: I've been trying to find it there is a specific website and the URL is in octarian so I'm trying to get Neta to- hm .... I'm sorry will excuse me for a quick sec.
_______________________________________________
Mahi: why the fuck are you here?!
Taka: I was invited of course. I can't miss an opportunity to be around my fellow artist. Why are you here you have no talent.
Mahi: I'm here because Neta wants me here! unlike you! You think we forgot how you treated him!
Taka: *pffth*.... how I treated him. As if taking him out to dinner, giving him a gift and being at his beckon call when he felt "lonely". He was honestly really sad.... But he is a sad person....boy he was hot tho...heh ..was
Mahi: you want to take this outside
Warabi: Mahi hay! the table is all out of drinks let's go get some more.
Candi: yeah let's just go to corner store. Their self checkout is still open let's just get some more wine and spritzer I am sober so I can drive so let's go. Let's go now. Mahi.
Mahi: [staring down taka]
Ikkan: mahi please don't ruin this event by a fight. Neta will never forgive you if you do.... Listen, go with Candi and Warabi and I'll handle this...
Mahi:...... Fine. .... I'll wait until the party ends
Ikkan: I'll get the bouncer.. kick them out before Neta - hi babe.
Neta: what happened? Why did everyone rush over here
Ikkan: Hi uhhh You're three employees are just going out to get some more refreshments they just didn't know how to
Neta: We have more in the back of my car they don't have to go out and......... Oh I see.....hey Taka......... I forgot I invited high tide
Taka: I was good to see you too. You look............ Uh
Neta:.............
Taka: I guess you stuck to the normal look huh... I like the glasses.....heheh..you look great heheheh . Man you let yourself go holy shit
Ikkan:ok that's it SECURITY!
Neta:.............. .. I'm going to get some air
Ikkan: I'll come with you.

Now Boarding the Jefferson Airplane
There are performing artists of older vintage I could treat of today, but none of them get me as jazzed as Grace Slick (b. 1939), nor are any of them as witchy. I love that she was born on Hallowe’en E’en, the Eve of All Hallows Eve. I’ve always found her as spooky-scary as she is gorgeous, a kind of proto-Goth pioneer. When you look at the girls in the Manson family (pre-head shaving) they seem…

Parker's passion for Lindy Hop led him to delve deep into its history. He studied vintage footage of the dance's pioneers, such as Frankie Manning and Norma Miller, and learned about the dance's roots in African-American culture and the Harlem Renaissance. The Cozy Aesthetic and the Timeless Charm of Lo-fi Music
The first step to creating any level of atmosphere is always to set the mood. In some instances that is accomplished with music even in the aim for a cozy aesthetic, which is characterized by warmth, comfort, and a sense of familiarity. Coziness has captured the hearts of countless individuals seeking solace amidst the chaos, and an integral part of this aesthetic and atmosphere, of this “setting the mood”, is lo-fi music. Lo-fi a genre that beautifully complements the cozy ambiance, transporting listeners to a simpler time. In this blog article, we will explore the origins of lo-fi music, its defining characteristics, and how it effortlessly intertwines with the cozy aesthetic, creating a harmonious escape from the modern hustle and bustle.
Origins of Lo-Fi Music
Lo-fi music, short for low-fidelity, traces its roots back to the 1950s when musicians intentionally embraced the limitations of recording technology. This approach was an artistic choice, rather than a technical limitation, and sought to capture the raw essence of music without the polished perfection often associated with high-fidelity recordings. In the 1980s, lo-fi music gained momentum as an underground movement, with bands like Guided by Voices and Sebadoh pioneering the genre.
Fast forward to the digital age, lo-fi music experienced a significant resurgence, owing to the ease of accessibility and sharing on various online platforms. Emerging artists began to blend nostalgic elements, such as vinyl crackles and analog warmth, with contemporary beats, forging a unique and mesmerizing style that captivated listeners worldwide.
Defining Characteristics of Lo-fi Music
Lo-fi music is characterized by a distinct set of elements that set it apart from other genres:
1. Vinyl Crackles and Hiss: Lo-fi tracks often feature vinyl crackles and background hiss, harkening back to the days of analog recording and imparting a sense of authenticity.
2. Sampled Sounds: Lo-fi artists often incorporate samples from vintage records, film dialogue, or found sounds, giving their music a distinctive and nostalgic quality.
3. Mellow Beats: The rhythmic backbone of lo-fi music is characterized by laid-back, downtempo beats that create a sense of relaxation and contemplation.
4. Jazzy Undertones: Jazz influences play a prominent role in lo-fi music, with smooth chords and improvisational elements lending a sophisticated yet soothing touch.
5. Repetition and Looping: Lo-fi tracks often employ repetitive loops, creating a mesmerizing and immersive experience that complements the cozy aesthetic.
The Cozy Aesthetic and Its Allure
The cozy aesthetic celebrates life's simple pleasures, emphasizing the beauty of comfort, warmth, and a sense of belonging. This concept gained traction in the early 2010s and has since grown into a widespread phenomenon, permeating various aspects of contemporary culture, from interior design to social media trends.
One of the primary reasons for the popularity of the cozy aesthetic is its ability to counterbalance the fast-paced, digitally-driven world we live in. The allure of coziness lies in its ability to evoke an emotional connection to a simpler time; a time often associated with a more carefree and peaceful existence. In a way, the cozy aesthetic is an antidote to the constant bombardment of information and stimuli, offering a much-needed respite from the chaos of modern life.
The Harmonious Blend: Lo-Fi Music and the Cozy Aesthetic
Lo-fi music's gentle melodies and laid-back rhythms mesh effortlessly with the cozy aesthetic, reinforcing its core principles in several ways:
1. A Sense of Familiarity: Lo-fi's vintage-inspired soundscapes, complete with vinyl crackles and sampled snippets from the past or even the present, elicit feelings of nostalgia and comfort through familiarity, taking listeners on a journey to simpler and/or happier times.
2. A Sanctuary of Tranquility: As lo-fi music gently flows through the air, its mellow beats and jazzy undertones create a calming atmosphere, transforming any space into a cozy sanctuary where one can unwind and find solace. It’s great for a cozy coffee shop or cafe, a relaxing background for a quiet get together, or listening to while you work on your blog, like I am right now.
3. A Complement to Visual Coziness: Whether you're scrolling through cozy home decor images on social media or enjoying the comforts of your own space, lo-fi music serves as the perfect backdrop to enhance the visual coziness, enriching the overall sensory experience.
4. Boosting Creativity and Focus: The soothing nature of lo-fi music is known to enhance creativity and boost focus, making it an ideal companion for artists, writers, and students seeking inspiration or a productive study session.
So, in the confluence of the cozy aesthetic and lo-fi music, we find a harmonious fusion of simplicity, warmth, familiarity and nostalgia. As we navigate the complexities of the modern world, this enchanting combination offers a retreat to a bygone era, a more peaceful space, where time seemed to move slower, and life's pleasures were savored without distraction. Whether enjoyed while curled up with a book, during a work-from-home day, or while simply daydreaming, lo-fi music, with its timeless charm, continues to be the soundtrack to a cozy and comforting journey through time.
