Take Care by @harringtonbf ☁️🍬
Hangman takes notice as you try to shake off the unwanted advances from some weirdo at The Hard Deck.
Afterburn by @top-hhun ☁️🍬📚
It had been clear from the moment you got inside a cockpit that you were going to be something special. You certainly weren’t the youngest Naval Aviator to be invited to TOPGUN, but you had been the youngest to graduate at number one in more than thirty years. Which is all the more reason why it was so tragic that you would never, ever, be able to fly again.
But you hadn’t been one of the best thanks only to pure talent, you had worked hard for your accolades, so instead of calling it quits, you decide to take all of your potential, and channel it toward a new path.
You return to TOPGUN, and choose to be one of the best civilian instructors the program will ever have.
Drink Up by @fandomxpreferences ❤️🔥☁️🍬📚

You're a Kazansky--Tom "Iceman" Kazinsky's youngest daughter--and you've taken after your father and become a Naval aviator. You don the call-sign Wisteria not only because the beauty of the flower but because of its lethal qualities.
Jake "Hangman" Seresin is the bane of your existence and he returns those feelings towards you ten-fold. Jake thinks that you've gotten everything handed to you and has no trouble telling everyone that. When things finally boil over one day (in a shower cubicle on base of all places), you find unlikely companionship in Jake. Who knew lemon-lime Gatorade and Plan B would be the start to your love story?

Jake was never the type to be taken home to mom. He never saw himself meeting the family, going to a small town where there’s a lifetime of memories and wanting to hear about every single one. He never saw himself sitting with a girls dad and noting all the ways that they were similar, hoping to live up his expectations he has set for his daughter. He never wanted that. Until he met you.
Jukebox War by @roosterforme ☁️🍬
Jake likes the jukebox at the Hard Deck, drinking beers, and cute girls who are a little bit mean to him.

Jake and Reader are at a crossroads that have the potential to change everything about their relationship that they've grown used to over the past years. With Reader transitioning from being a Naval Aviator to a more stable position after the mission in TG:M, only time and their love for each other will tell this tale.
Hangman x Roommate!Reader (A Will They/Won't They One-Shot) by @girl-in-the-chairs-void ❤️🔥☁️🍬
From an Ask: Hi girl!!! I dont know if ur taking requests but I’ve recently become obsessed with hangman x roommate!reader and I feel only you can do my imagination justice :))
so imagine this: gang gets together for their annual get away and they get frkn slammed out drunk together bc their get away is the only time they can let go and be themselves without all the tension from work .. jake and his roommate (also a naval aviator) seem to always forget they are just friends when drunk like full on grinding on each other while dancing, making suggestive comments to each other,.. but they’ve never actually kissed so the gang decides to interfere and with the result of a stupid dare they get locked into a closet together being forced to kiss but Jake refuses and reader is kinda hurt by it (imagine a kind of nick and jess new girl inspo for this part, he doesnt want their first kiss to be like that) and after that they decide to go skinny dipping all together (thanks Rooster for the idea) they end up being the only two left on the beach together having a heart to heart conversation and reader wants to know why Jake refused to kiss her… you can decide how you end it!!!
Better Man Universe by @sweetlittlegingy ❤️🔥☁️🍬📚
A series about how Jake falls in love with a single mom and becomes a dad and very loving husband. This one is seriously so sweet.
Pas de Deux by @yanna-banana ❤️🔥☁️💢🍬📚
Jake and Odette danced around each other from their days at the academy until they were assigned to opposite coast lines; Jake to the west and Odette to the east. Now years later, Odette joins the Daggers at Top Gun. Will they be able to come to terms with their feelings? Or will the past keep them apart?
Silver Springs by @roosterbruiser ❤️🔥☁️💢🍬📚
Before becoming a hotshot Naval aviator, Jake Seresin was born and bred in the small town of Silverkeep, TX. It’s only a short drive from Austin but feels like a different world entirely--all the houses are falling apart, people keep their rusty trucks unlocked on their front lawn, central air conditioning is rarer than a rainstorm, and everyone wears their best boots to church. His every waking minute is spent with his endearing group of friends--and most importantly: you. Riding your bikes to Silver Spring on Friday afternoons, drinking cheap beer around a bonfire after school, and making mixed tapes is what you all live for as your senior year drifts to a close.
He comes of age and falls in love with you, his best friend that he affectionately refers to as Filly. You’re the bull-headed, ardent, zealous girl he met in Sunday school before you were old enough to tie your own shoes. Somewhere between chain-smoking after baseball games underneath the bleachers and lying in the bed of someone’s daddy’s truck at the rundown drive-in, the two of you have been entirely dedicated to each other. You both think you’re in love. But your situation is a delicate balance of downright, darling devotion and paralyzing fear of rejection. This is to say: neither of you have the gall to do a damn thing about it. Your existence in the little world of Silverkeep is fragile--suddenly and easily disrupted when maturescence rears its ugly head. Sometimes very far apart and sometimes very close together, yours and Jake’s story spans across fifteen years. From Port Gin to Rior River, your paths are woven intricately by fated grocery store encounters and sprawling horse ranches.
They All Know, He's In Love With You. by @roleycoleyreccenter ☁️🍬
From the night you first set eyes on Jake “Hangman” Seresin, and went home with him from the bar, you knew that there wasn’t ever going to be anything serious between you two. You just wish you could figure out why he keeps acting the opposite, and everyone thinks you are together.
Drive me wild by @bussyslayer333 ❤️🔥☁️🍬📚
falling in love with your best friend’s older brother wasn’t ideal, but jake seresin just might be worth it.
Above The Fold by @ereardon ❤️🔥☁️💢🍬📚
As editor-in-chief of Farrington College’s newspaper, you have an ethical duty to journalism to unearth the truth. So when you catch wind that the college’s oldest fraternity is about to be banned for elicit behavior, you’re intent on getting to the bottom of the dissolution of the fraternity. But their suave president Jake Seresin will do anything he can to stop you from getting the full truth. Breaking the story about DPhi’s decades of misconduct could win you a national college journalism scholarship, and the prize is free tuition to your grad school of choice. That is, if you can get past the arrogant and headstrong Jake to uncover the truth behind DPhi’s allegations. Jake has made it his mission to stop you, and it’s clear he despises you for tampering with his fraternity’s politics. Or does he?

Where I'm From and Compromise by @sometimes-i-write-good ☁️ 💢🍬📚
Jake Seresin could handle lots of things. He was the only naval aviator of his time to have a confirmed kill - two, actually. He kept forgetting about that second one. It was newly under his belt, and, considering the circumstances surrounding it, he hadn’t felt too inclined to brag about it. Still, the point remained. Jake could carry the weight of taking a life, of saving a life, and of putting his life in harms way.
Jake never thought he would fall in love with the woman who cried on the first date he ever took her on, but here he was months later standing in her kitchen even more in love than ever.

“What do you expect? That this is all going to be easy? That you’re gonna get up there and everything is gonna just click? It takes work. It takes perseverance, and practice. You’re wasting valuable time. Wake up, kid!”

Callie 'Halo' Kazansky-Mitchell doesn't care about bets, all she's worried about is her Pop's health. It becomes a hilarious distraction nonetheless as she watches her family find their way back to one another. The only reason why they didn't end up killing her was her jewelry, which was made of pure silver. Afterwards, Rhiannon wasn't the same. She became secluded and paranoid, causing her grades to slip in senior year. This didn't stop her from being accepted into the University of Pittsburgh's honors school, where she would study biology. It was there that she met Jasper Pedroza Veracruz, a geology major who harbored the same hatred for vampires. The two became fast friends even after they graduated. New Beginnings
Okay, so this one takes place in @cosmicrealmofkissteria‘s Assassin AU (that is the link to her Ao3 page where the story is if you haven’t read it) because jeez, she really puts Vinnie in a dark place. So naturally, I had to give Vinnie a happy ending, and that’s how BETH came into the picture! She’s Vinnie’s younger cousin, and while their backstory isn’t really relevant to the story, they were really close when Beth was younger. Enjoy!
Beth wasn’t sure why she was still in New York.
At first, it had been because her brother insisted she come to see his new baby, and she could never refuse her brother, even if he was still living in New York. His new baby, a girl named Emily, was definitely adorable, and his wife was wonderful, but Beth was only planning on being there for a few days, three at most. It was nearly five days now, and she was very sure her boss wouldn’t understand if she called and asked for more time off.
What was she still doing here? This city had been the place she felt trapped in for the first seventeen years of her life. It wasn’t a home; it was a prison. A prison that at any second could riot and cause her or her brother’s death. So when she received the scholarship to University of Phoenix, she’d left with her scholarship money and saved tuition money and never looked back. She hated New York. So why hadn’t she left yet?
On the fifth day of her visit, Beth was walking down the street from her hotel, thinking she would take a subway to her brother’s neighborhood, when a black car rolled up to the curb. For some reason, Beth’s legs slowed, and came to a stop as the car stopped beside her.
The tinted window of the backseat rolled down, and a dark-haired man wearing sunglasses looked out at her. “Elizabeth Cusano?”
Old instincts began to kick in, and Beth gave him the best glare she could manage in her sunglasses. It was equally reassuring to remember the small Ruger handgun she kept in her purse. “Who’s Elizabeth Cusano?”
“You’re the granddaughter of the current head of the Caringi family in the Italian mob. You left seven years ago to attend the University of Arizona, and now work as a bartender at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas. Am I wrong?”
Beth tried her best not to gawk. Just who the hell was this guy?
She glanced around, then got closer to the car, leaning down and grabbing the top of her purse so she could easily grab her gun. “Listen, man, who the hell do you think you are, and what do you want?”
“My name is Gene Simmons and I have some information for you regarding your cousin, Vincent.”
Beth froze. Immediately memories flashed in her head, of a young man with dark eyes and sad smiles and unconvincing laughs. “Are you bullshitting me?” she snapped.
Simmons waved for her to get in the car. “Why don’t you find out for yourself?”
Beth paused. On one hand, she could shoot the guy and run. But run where? She was in broad daylight, hundreds of people were surrounding her, and she would be running on foot while he was in a fast-moving car.
On the other hand…
Beth looked around to make sure no one was watching, then opened the door and slid into the car.
--
The office Gene brought her into was big and windowless, and had three huge monitors showing security footage behind a desk. She was shown into a chair in front of the desk while Gene himself sat down behind it.
“Okay, I came with you,” Beth said, trying to sound in control. It was something Papa had drilled into her head: Always seem like you’re the one in control. “Now what do you want to tell me? And remember, if you’re bullshitting me, I can shoot you right now and throw your body into the Hudson. I know how to cut up a body.”
Gene looked almost amused. “I don’t doubt it.” He tented his fingers together. “When was the last time you saw Vinnie, Miss Cusano?”
“Er, eight years ago, I think. At my Nana’s… well, that doesn’t matter. Then he dropped off the grid; I haven’t seen or heard from him since.”
Then again, she had been too wrapped up in her own shit at the time.
“Why do you want to know?”
“Have you ever heard of Peter Criss, the Brooklyn Wildcat?”
The name wasn’t ringing any bells. Then again, she’d been away from New York for long she didn’t know how many gangsters she knew about were still alive and how many were dead. “No, I haven’t. He sounds… interesting.” Read: fucking dangerous. Another thing Papa had told her: if they have a nickname, they’re either insane or very dangerous, or even both. “Did Vinnie get mixed up with him?”
“We know that Vinnie was working for him. Well, “working” is a bit of a loose term. We don’t know for how long, but what matters is now. And right now, Vinnie needs to get out of New York, and you just so happen to be the only family member he remembers giving a damn about. We need your help getting him out of New York.”
Beth hesitated for only a second. “Of course. Where is he now?”
Gene pressed a button on his desk. There was a buzzing noise, and a side door opened. A short man with unbelievably fluffy hair walked in, followed by… Vinnie.
His hair was longer and his skin was paler, and he looked horribly thin. There were dark circles under his eyes and his face was gaunt. His head was turned to the floor and he looked… defeated. Heartbreakingly defeated.
Beth’s mouth dropped open at the sight of him. “Vinnie?” she said aloud, unsure if it was really him.
Vinnie looked up, and his eyes widened. Tears welled up in them. “H-Hi, Bethie,”
His voice was croaky and hoarse, but it was him.
Beth shot out of her seat and ran to him, feeling like a young girl again, and threw her arms around him. Vinnie hugged her back tightly, and she heard him start to softly cry. She couldn’t believe this was happening.
“If you want my advice,” Gene said behind them, “I’d leave tonight. We don’t know if Vinnie has any other enemies, and there’s a chance Criss will find out he’s still alive.”
Still holding onto Vinnie, Beth looked over at Gene. “Of course.”
She wasn’t sure what she’d gotten into, but all that mattered to her right now was that her cousin had returned, and she was returning to Las Vegas with a probably-permanent companion.
--
Back at Beth’s hotel, Beth was on the hotel room phone with the airport while Vinnie showered in the bathroom. It would be last minute, but there was a two AM flight from New York to Las Vegas they could take. And Vinnie had procured a fake ID and passport, probably from Gene, so there was a good guarantee nobody would figure out he was really a notorious assassin.
Just as Beth hung up, the bathroom door opened and Vinnie walked out. He looked much better; still tired, but better.
She looked up at him. “I just changed flights and bought a ticket for you. We’re leaving on the two AM flight.”
Vinnie nodded. “Okay,” he said quietly. He stood where he was, eyes darting about.
Beth furrowed her brow and gestured to the bed. “You can sit down if you want,”
Without a word, Vinnie sat down on the bed.
“So we’ve got the rest of the day before our flight. What do you want to do? We could go out and do something.”
“I don’t think that’d be wise,” Vinnie replied timidly.
Beth nodded in assent. “Yeah, you’re right. You hungry? I think the restaurant opened a while ago.”
Vinnie shook his head. “No thank you.” He looked down at his lap.
Now Beth frowned. This was not the Vinnie she remembered. The Vinnie she remembered was not this timid and submissive. Her blood boiled in her veins as she wondered what happened to him. Whoever this Peter Criss was, she wanted to hunt him down and cut him into bits; the image of that made her feel slightly better.
“Uh… you remember Anthony, right?” Vinnie nodded. “Well guess what: he’s married and has a kid.”
Vinnie looked up at that, looking amazed. “Really?”
Beth nodded. “Yeah. The kid’s name is Emily and she’s adorable, and his wife is nice too. We could go see them if you want.”
But it seemed that was the wrong thing to say, because at that suggestion Vinnie looked down at his lap again. “No, that’s okay. They sound nice. I’m… I’m glad Anthony is okay.”
Honestly, Beth doubted Anthony would even remember Vinnie anyway. He’d never been as close to him as Beth had been.
Beth got up from the desk and went over to the bed, sitting next to Vinnie. She went to take his hand, but when Vinnie visibly blanched she thought better of it and withdrew her hand. “Listen, I don’t know what happened to you, and I can’t being to understand it, but I promise I’ll get you out of here. When we get to Vegas, I can find you a job too, if you like. It could be at the Luxor, same as me.”
Vinnie looked at her in confusion. “Why?”
The question caught Beth off guard. “Why?”
“Why would you do that… for me? Why would you do all this for the person who left you alone?”
Beth frowned. “Because you’re the only person in our family I care about. And I don’t care that you left. Honestly, if I had been older, I would’ve asked to go with you.”
Vinnie looked like he was going to cry again. “But I—”
“I don’t care,” Beth stressed, trying not to be too loud. “What matters is, you’re here now, and we’re getting out of the city. And you know what else? We’re never coming back.”
Vinnie sniffled, and a tear rolled down his cheek. A small smile appeared on his lips. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into a tight hug. “I—I missed you, Bethie,”
Beth smiled and wrapped her arms around him. “I missed you too,”
--
LAS VEGAS – ONE MONTH LATER
Beth walked into her flat, exhaustion coursing through her body. She had just gotten off the late shift at the Luxor, and she could not believe how many people ordered drinks tonight. Jesus… She loved working as a bartender at the Luxor—it paid well and mixing drinks had always been a talent of hers—but the people that came to it could sometimes be difficult.
Beth threw her purse onto the kitchen table and got a glass of water, then gulped it down as she walked into the living room area and flopped down on the couch. She opened one eye and looked over at Vinnie, who was sitting on the other end of the couch reading a book. “What’re you doing up?” she asked tiredly.
He shrugged. “Couldn’t sleep,”
Beth nodded in understanding.
Vinnie had certainly begun to change for the better after moving to Vegas. It took time, but he gradually stopped being so timid and quiet, and started to be the first one to talk instead of Beth being forced to make conversation. He started smiling more and laughing more; Beth still smiled at the memory of when they, bored out of their minds, watched a Looney Tunes rerun and Vinnie laughed so loud her upstairs neighbor came down to see what was going on. He was doing better, but still had a ways to go. He slipped sometimes, back into who he had been before, and sometimes, like tonight, couldn’t sleep due to night terrors. Beth wasn’t sure what she could do about it, but she did make sure to stress every time that Vinnie could always talk to her whenever he needed to.
“Well, I’m so tired I’m not tired, so what do you want to do?”
Vinnie shrugged again. “Not sure.” He looked in the direction of Beth’s radio. “We could listen to music.”
Beth shrugged herself. “Sure. We just have to make sure it’s quiet.”
Vinnie closed his book and went over to the radio as Beth kicked off her shoes.
“—listening to 92.3 KOMP, Las Vegas’s official rock n’ roll station. Coming up next, we’ve got Elton John!”
Beth immediately perked up as the opening piano music to “Bennie and the Jets” came through the speakers. She loved this song. “Oh, sweet. You ever heard this song?”
Vinnie shot her a look as he sat back down. “Of course I have. Who hasn’t heard “Bennie and the Jets”?”
They both sat in silence. Beth’s foot tapped and her head nodded along to the beat as she looked over at Vinnie, who was sitting and listening silently. His head bobbed slightly along.
She wondered if Vinnie knew just how much she worried about him. She was happy with how far he had come, but sometimes, whenever he slipped, she wondered and worried if this would be the time he slipped back completely and never went back again. That, realistically, was impossible, but she still wondered; it had only been a month, after all.
“Say Candy and Ronnie, have you seen ‘em yet? Oh, but they’re so spaced out—”
“B-B-B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets,” Beth sang aloud. Vinnie looked over at her, smiling slightly. Beth smiled back, and sang more confidently. “Oh, but they’re weird and wonderful. Oh, Bennie, she’s really keen.”
She sat up and pretended she was singing into a microphone, moving dramatically. “She’s got electric boots, a mohair suit. You know I read it in a magaziIIIIIIne, ohhhh. B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets!”
Vinnie laughed. Beth smiled wider and got up. She grabbed Vinnie’s hands and pulled him off the couch. “C’mon, Vinnie, dance with me!”
And soon they were up off the couch and dancing around the living room, singing along and not giving a damn who heard (well, they would apologize if anyone knocked, but still).
“Oh, Candy and Ronnie, have you seen ‘em yet?” Vinnie sang. His voice was melodious. “Oh, but they’re so spaced out. B-B-B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets! Oh, but they’re weird and wonderful. Oh, Bennie, she’s really keen.”
“She’s got electric boots,” they sang together, “a mohair suit. You know I read it in a magaziIIIIIne, ohhhh. B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets!”
Laughing, Vinnie grabbed her hands and twirled them both in circles. They continued dancing until the song ended, and when it did, they flopped back onto the couch, breathless from dancing but laughing in pure joy. Beth leaned her head on Vinnie’s shoulder, smiling.
He’d be okay. She was sure of that now. He’d be okay.
#seriously shandi you put vinnie in a bad place didn't ya?#the reason there's a huge timeskip is because I don't know much about psychological abuse recovery and I didn't want to get anything wrong#vinnie needs all the hugs#beth is a survivor#they both are really#gene is an enigma#as usual#ALL ABOARD THE ANGST TRAIN BITCHES#also Elton john#Elton john makes everything better#it's facts#I've been writing a lot of angst lately#next thing I write will be more lighthearted I promise#kiss au writing#assassin au#hope you enjoyed!

A who’s-who of Oscar nominees, A-listers and top Hollywood executives came out to support the Motion Picture & Television Fund at its 17th annual “Night Before” party, which raised $5 million in support of the MPTF.
One of the key events of Oscar weekend, the “Night Before” party, held Saturday on the Fox Studios lot in Los Angeles and co-sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter, drew past Oscar winners including Mahershala Ali (also a current nominee, who came with wife Amatus Sami-Karim), George Clooney, Viola Davis (with husband Julius Tennon), Leonardo DiCaprio, Marcia Gay Harden, Allison Janney and Octavia Spencer.
Among the 2019 Oscar nominees who were at the event were Amy Adams (with husband Darren Le Gallo), Yalitza Aparicio, Glenn Close, Willem Dafoe (with wife Giada Colagrande), Adam Driver (with wife Joanne Tucker), Richard E. Grant, Sam Elliott, Regina King, Spike Lee, Rami Malek and Viggo Mortensen.
Close, Grant and King made their way to the party just a few hours after collecting Film Independent Spirit Awards earlier in the day for best actress, best supporting actor and best supporting actress, respectively.
The 2019 host committee included a lineup of talent including Adams and Le Gallo, Ali, Tanya Haden Black and Jack Black, Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg, Amal and George Clooney, Close, Colagrande and Dafoe, Bradley Cooper, Tom Cruise, DiCaprio, Lady Gaga, Janney, King, Malek, Mortensen, Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith, Rachel Weisz, Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth, and Constance Wu.
Other A-listers at the exclusive, invitation-only bash included event maestro Jeffrey Katzenberg, who serves as chairman of the MPTF Foundation, along with recent Golden Globe/Emmy/SAG Award winner Darren Criss (with new wife Mia Swier), Chris Evans, Tiffany Haddish, Jon Hamm, Mindy Kaling, Keegan-Michael Key and producer wife Elisa Pugliese, Helen Mirren, Mike Myers, Christopher Nolan and Taylor Swift with boyfriend (The Favourite actor) Joe Alwyn, in addition to past Oscar nominees Ava DuVernay, Samuel L. Jackson, Carey Mulligan, Anna Paquin with husband Stephen Moyer, Will Smith with wife Jada Pinkett Smith and Hailee Steinfeld.
Black Panther stars Angela Bassett, Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, Michael B. Jordan also came out to support the cause, as did Crazy Rich Asians stars Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Henry Golding and Constance Wu.
Top executives including Disney CEO Bob Iger and studio chair Alan Horn, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts (with Universal’s Ron Meyer), WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey and Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos, Universal Pictures chair Donna Langley, Sony Pictures chair Tom Rothman and Paramount Pictures CEO Jim Gianopulos also were at the bash, where guests enjoyed specialty foods from Carmelized Productions by Jon Shook & Vinny Dotolo.
Funds raised during the “Night Before” party are used to support the MPTF, which assists industry members in Hollywood of all ages by providing financial assistance, crisis counseling, caregiving support and the retirement facility in Woodland Hills that film and TV veterans call “home.”
In total, the annual event has raised more than $85 million since its inception in 2003.
THR returned as one of the presenting sponsors of the event alongside Delta Air Lines, Ford Motor Company, L'Oréal USA, Target, Yahoo! and YouTube. This marked THR's sixth year as the sole media sponsor of the party.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the generosity of the presenting sponsors and donors for making the ‘Night Before’ an amazing evening, one that once again brings the industry together in the spirit of a community that truly takes care of its own,” Katzenberg said.
The long list of stars at the party also included Malin Akerman, Joe Alwyn, Anthony Anderson, Billy Baldwin, Elizabeth Banks, Camilla Belle, Greg Berlanti, Julie Bowen, Amy Brenneman, Billy Brown, Dan Bucatinsky, Mark Burnett, Ty Burrell, Ross Butler, Linda Cardellini, Anthony Carrigan, Erika Christensen, Ciara, Chase Crawford, Terry Crews, Rory Culkin, Josh Dallas, Nina Dobrev, Winston Duke, Billy Eichner, Cynthia Erivo, Patrick Fabian, Taissa Farmiga, Fortune Feimster, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, America Ferrera, Andy Garcia, Danny Glover, Meagan Good, Ginnifer Goodwin, Topher Grace, Kat Graham, Kelsey Grammar, Max Greenfield, Jonathan Groff, Savannah Guthrie, Regina Hall, Ben Hardy, Laura Harrier, Patricia Heaton, Christina Hendricks, Sam Heughan, Cheryl Hines, Julianne Hough, Nicholas Hoult, Vanessa Hudgens, Gillian Jacobs, Jake Johnson, Zoe Kazan, Machine Gun Kelly, Jaime King, Heidi Klum, T.R. Knight, Nick Kroll, Christine Lahti, Sanaa Lathan, KiKi Layne, Gwilym Lee, Allen Leech, Judith Light, Hamish Linklater, Zoe Lister-Jones, Diego Luna, Melanie Lynskey, Danielle Macdonald, Andie MacDowell, Joel Madden, Ashley Madekwe, Jason Mantzoukas, Joe Mazello, Katherine McNamara, Shay Mitchell, Natalie Morales, Trevor Noah, Chord Overstreet, Adam Pally, Barbara Palvin, Zac Posen, Jack Quaid, Zachary Quinto, Lily Rabe, June Diane Raphael, Nikki Reed, Retta, Nicole Richie, Jason Ritter, Emma Roberts, Brit Robertson, Robbie Rogers, Ray Romano, Meg Ryan, Halston Sage, Rosa Salazar, Nico Santos, Paul Scheer, Maia Shibutani, Alex Shibutani, Ian Somerhalder, Abigail Spencer, Destry Allyn Spielberg, Cole Sprouse, Dylan Sprouse, Lakeith Stanfield, Sydney Sweeney, Jessica Szohr, Maura Tierney, Lorraine Toussaint, Michelle Trachtenberg, Gabrielle Union, Milo Ventimiglia, Diane Warren, Dominic West, Ed Westwick, Mae Whitman, Russell Wilson and Ali Wong.

Top 20 Being Libertarian Articles of 2018
It’s been an amazing year overall for us here at Being Libertarian LLC, and we wanted to wrap the year up with a list of our top articles from 2018. We definitely want to thank each and every author for their contributions throughout the year. Here they are for your reading pleasure, and definitely keep your eyes out for all of the great content we have planned for you in the year ahead. Enjoy!
1. ‘Rampant Voter Fraud’, Florida Gov. Scott Files Lawsuits After Uncovering 100,000 New Ballots
Author: Alex Croft
“Broward County stated on election night that there were 634,000 votes cast that day. As of 1 pm Thursday, that number was corrected to 695,700 and again later that day at 2:30 pm to 707,223. Thursday evening saw that number jump further to 712,840, as Palm Beach County claimed to find over 15,000 previously untallied votes.”
2. Want A Gun For ‘Self-Defense’? That Will Soon Be Illegal In South Africa
Author: Martin van Staden
“If this bill is passed into law in its current form, it will likely make it impossible for those who acquired their licences for the purpose of self-defense unable to renew those licences, which is required on a periodic basis. Aspirant firearm owners would be barred completely from using guns as a tool to defend themselves going forward.”
3. JuSt cAlL ThE PoLicE
Author: Mike Ursery
“Bloom ruled that the school district and the sheriff’s office had no constitutional duty to protect students not in custody. She wrote in her ruling that Cruz was a third party and not a state actor and that for the duty of protecting plaintiffs to exist, they would have to be in custody, such as prisoners or patients at a mental hospital.”
4. The Truth About Gun Violence
Author: Vinny Marshall
“Historically, what we can learn from past attempts to remove or regulate ownership rights of firearms from citizens is that it doesn’t do a whole lot to actually affect the rates of violence that exist, only the rates of violence with the weapon that you had set out to ban.”
5. Misconceptions of the Libertarian View of Abortion
Author: Nathan Kreider
“Block and Whitehead argue that a woman has the right to evict the fetus, but not to terminate it if it’s possible for the fetus to exist outside the womb with the help of medical technology. They point out that as technology advances, the point at which a fetus can exist outside the womb will inch closer to earlier stages of development, and thus the earlier the limit on abortions will be placed.”
6. The Dangers of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Author: Jenny Grimberg
“We examine three of her policy proposals to show that not only are they incorrect, but also to remind everyone that capitalism has helped millions of people, and we should not be taken in by the socialist tendencies of politicians like Ocasio-Cortez.”
7. The March for Our Tyranny – The Lowdown on Liberty
Author: Thomas J. Eckert
“And therein lies the problem: the anti-gun crowd wants solutions to their perceived problems, but how can we begin a discussion with a group so disingenuous about their intentions? It’s like trying to speak to a pickpocket as they reach for your wallet. As you ask them what they’re up to, they may reassure you they mean no harm and accuse you of being paranoid, but the truth is that in the end they want your wallet, regardless of what they say.”
8. Why People Are Left Wing – Freedom Philosophy
Author: Brandon Kirby
“I believe something similar has happened to the left. They very passionately want to abolish poverty, perhaps in some cases even more so than the right. Just as the greediest investor is not the most successful investor, the most passionate people aren’t the ones with the best ideas on how to accomplish this goal.”
9. The Rise of Jordan Peterson – What It Says About Us
Author: Adam Barsouk
“I believe Peterson’s claim to ideological fame is his seeming lack of interest in it. Most political pundits start and end their careers in politics. And yet, politics inherently do not produce any economic value—the entire essence of the job is to steal another’s earning while convincing that person it is for their own good.”
10. No, Vaccines Should Never Be Mandatory
Author: JSB Morse
“As with any medication or pharmaceutical, there are health risks that come with the benefits of vaccines. It is irresponsible to suggest that all people should get all such pharmaceuticals and it is illegitimate use of governmental authority to require it in order to receive benefits or other privileges.”
11. Jordan B. Peterson’s Twelve Rules is a Wakeup Call for a Nightmare Society
Author: JSB Morse
“We have collectively been lulled into an unnatural and inhumane philosophy of life through various diabolical agents. Twelve Rules is an urgently needed wake-up call for us to stand up and take responsibility for one’s life—not 50% or “just enough to get by,” but everything you can muster—100%.”
12. GM Cuts Over 10,000 Jobs, & No, It’s Not All Due To Tariffs
Author: Vinny Marshall
“While those who take issue with tariffs will be quick to point out the economic policy handed down by the Trump administration as the primary cause of the downsizing currently being undertaken by American automakers, tariffs seem to only be a portion of the issue at hand. Yes, the tariffs play a role as GM and Ford have both stated tariffs on steel have cost the company upwards of $1 Billion, and Toyota claims the tariffs will raise the cost of popular models by $1-3k dollars. However, tariffs do not seem to be the primary issue in this case.”
13. It’s Time to Focus on the ‘School’ in ‘School Shooting’ – The Lowdown on Liberty
Author: Thomas J. Eckert
“No matter how you slice it, it’s impossible to examine what we know about school shootings with any objective measure and not conclude that public schools may be a large contributing factor. The only problem is that new solutions seem to be unwelcome in – what feels like – a never-ending conversation.”
14. Liberty at Sea – Red Dirt Liberty Report
Author: Danny Chabino
“Many people are looking to the concept of “seasteading” as a new bold adventure into free societies that exist outside the hands of existing governing bodies. Seasteading is as it sounds – making a home on the open seas, sometimes in international waters, where no particular government is in charge, and sometimes by negotiated means in a free economic zone that has been established.”
15. FCC Lied About DDoS Attack to Downplay Opposition of Net Neutrality Repeal
Author: Alon Ganon
“Unfortunately, it appears that the Pai led FCC is sounding like they have no plans to tell the public what truly happened or whether they had lied, as it appears the FCC has gone silent about the issue.”
16. Why Only Stupid People Propose Taxing Churches – Freedom Philosophy
Author: Brandon Kirby
“Governments tax profits. They tax income. When a pastor takes out an income from the church they must pay taxes on it. Canada has decided that money going to a non-profit organization is not considered income, for the organization and the one giving the money, so donations are a tax deduction. Religious ministers, unless they’ve taken a vow of poverty, aren’t being given a free ride on taxation, the ones whose tax returns I’ve filled out seem to be as aggravated as the rest of us on tax day.”
17. Sexualized Content: Revival of Puritanism
Author: Killian Hobbs
“With Facebook joining this decision despite having no such issues themselves in recent history it seems like little more than the revival of Puritan thinking. Once again, the social media platforms we frequent daily are deciding for us what is an is not appropriate content. This is a decision that shouldn’t be left in the hands of a small handful of companies, but rather in the hands of the users.”
18. Before You Go To University: Top 10 Logical Fallacies
Author: Brandon Kirby
“The wonderful thing about logic is that when practiced properly it finds falsehood against which there is no response. People who are found guilty of these fallacies have false arguments. Professors, scientists, economists, politicians, pastors, even philosophers, who make such fallacies can have their arguments that take this form immediately dismissed without further discussion.”
19. The Self-Destructive Nature of the Libertarian Party
Author: Jake Dorsch
“If you pay any attention to Libertarian Party politics, you would know there are far more gaffes than this that I could mention just from Gary Johnson alone. That said, I like the people I mentioned here and I think the named people would make excellent governors and senators.”
20. GoFundMe For Trump’s Border Wall. Sadly, It’s True.
Author: Killian Hobbs
“In my personal opinion, this is both a good and a bad thing. It raises many questions about the mindsets of the average American that is donating the funds directly out of their own pocket towards this campaign. Despite the general uselessness such a wall would actually have compared to say additional border staff or the like (if their intention is to truly increase border defense) they still are making large donations. The one upside to this, however, is that if it does work it will open the American public’s eyes to a notion that we Libertarians have been espousing for years: fund these things yourself rather than using our tax dollars towards it.”

CANTLON'S CORNER: THERE'S STILL HOCKEY NEWS AND NOTES EVEN UNDER QUARANTINE - VOLUME 3
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - Even with the world principally under quarantine, hockey business still moves forward. At this time of the year, Cheshire-native, Rob Malloy, usually is ramping up his workouts in preparation for what's coming up in three weeks, skating for Australia at the IIHF Division II Group A World Championship tournament. The championship, played in Zagreb, Croatia, near the Mediterranean Sea, would have been Malloy's sixth of his career. But now, that's all changed. The Mighty Roos, the Aussie’s national team name that would have been competing against China, host Croatia, Israel, the Netherlands, and Spain, but due to the COVID-19 outbreak that started in China, has taken that away from him and his Aussie teammates. In addition, the start of his 10th season of AIHL (Australian Ice Hockey League) hockey scheduled for April 18th is on hold as well. “We were obviously disappointed worlds were canceled, but nobody disagreed. At this stage, I don’t think there will be a competition until 2021. I also don’t see the feasibility of the AIHL season going ahead either. The teams rely on ticket sales and sponsorships to survive flying 25 guys around the country multiple times. Most rinks have shut for the time being. I don’t know, I don’t see anything happening in the near future,” Malloy said via e-mail. It's not the only calamity that has befallen him in the Land Down Under. He, his wife, and his two young children were in the heart of the Australian apocalyptic-looking brushfires several months ago, near their home in New South Wales. “The fires were pretty crazy! There was one about 15 miles from us that was burning for months. We lived in a blanket of smoke for a while. The air quality was awful. We couldn’t really even go outside. They are all extinguished at this point, but the recovery will be felt for years to come.” Now he and his family are back at home, unable to leave home, yet again. “We've been sitting in isolation for a few weeks now. They haven’t locked everything down yet here, let’s see what happens.” XL CENTER As of Wednesday, the home of the AHL Hartford Wolf Pack, UCONN hockey and men’s and women’s basketball is closed. The last of its staff was furloughed, both office and building workers. This now leaves just one office employee in the Wolf Pack offices and building security in the structure on a daily basis. WEBSTER BANK ARENA Currently, there aren't any AHL Sound Tigers hockey going on in the building, but plenty of saves are still going on. The arena is being converted to an emergency triage center for handling the overflow of coronavirus patients from various Fairfield County facilities. Fairfield County has been the hardest hit county in the state. Fairfield County is followed by New Haven County. Up to 118 beds have been assembled and hopefully never used are now available. Hats off to OVG and the arena staff for helping facilitate this. PRO SIGNINGS Ex-Sound Tiger, Cory Conacher, is the likely first AHL’er from this year to sign a European contract. The 30-year-old played in 44 games with the Syracuse Crunch as well as four games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, according to a Swiss hockey website. Conacher has signed with HC Lausanne (Switzerland-LNA), but the team didn’t comment on the rumor. Montreal signed winger Laurent Dauphin to a one-year, two-way deal. Dauphin was acquired on January 7th from the Nashville Predators for Michael McCarron going from Milwaukee to Laval. It was the first of several trades to change Laval. COLLEGE PRO SIGNINGS The New York Rangers added one more forward to the mix for the 2020-21 Wolf Pack season. Justin Richards, a center from the defending national champion University Minnesota-Duluth (NCHC), is leaving school a year early. In 34 gamers he had 14 goals and 25 points and was plus-14. In 120 career games for the Bulldogs, he's amassed 26 goals and 66 points. His father is Todd Richards, the ex-Hartford Whaler. His uncle Travis played for eight years with Grand Rapids (AHL). The number of signees is increasing a little each day and for UCONN next year some of the top teams in Hockey East have lost some big guns. Northeastern saw Tyler Madden leave after two years for a standard three-year, entry-level deal with the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings acquired his rights in a trade deadline deal with the Vancouver Canucks, who originally drafted Madden in 2017. The nation’s leading collegiate goalscorer, John Leonard, leaves the UMASS-Amherst Minutemen (HE) and heads for San Jose. His teammate Jake McLaughlin signs with the Chicago Wolves and Max Gildon leaves New Hampshire early for the Florida Panthers. One of the bigger college free agents, Brinson Pasichnuk, of Division I's independent program, Arizona State Sun Devils signed not with the Coyotes, but with the San Jose Sharks. Currently, that makes 68 Division I players that have signed pro deals and 78 in total. Two college players have signed for Europe one in Division I and one from Division III and 16 underclassmen have left early in Division I. According to veteran Rhode Island hockey reporter, Mark Divver, forward Tim Doherty of the University of Maine (HE) is transferring to Penn State (Big 10) in the fall is the latest grad transfer. Defenseman Milan Alishlalov (Westminster Prep) comes to UCONN in the fall. He has been playing for the Johnstown (PA) Tomahawks and was named to the NAHL East Division All-Rookie team and to the NAHL second-team, All-Rookie squad The three Hobey Baker finalists were announced and the award winner will be announced April 11th at an odd time 11 PM on ESPN Sportscenter. Junior Jordan Kawaguchi of North Dakota (NCHC), Junior Scott Perunovich of Minnesota-Duluth (NCHC) who just signed a two-year, entry-level deal with the defending Stanley Cup champions St. Louis Blues. Junior goalie, Jeremy Swayman of Maine (HE) signed an entry-level deal with Boston last month and are vying for the title. HOCKEY NEWS Cooper Moore (Greenwich/Brunswick School) was named to the BCHL All-Rookie team. The British Columbia Hockey League is one of the 10 Junior A Leagues in Canada that college-bound players are sent to prepare for a year or two before playing Division I hockey. Moore will be skating for North Dakota (NCHC) in the fall. The Chicago Steel (USHL) was awarded the leagues Anderson Cup as regular season champions with a 41-7-1-0 for 83 points. The head coach to start the year was ex-Wolf Pack captain and Sound Tiger, Greg Moore, who left December 1st to take the head coaching job with the Toronto Marlies (AHL). The OHL Priority Draft will be held remotely this Saturday starting at 9 AM for 300 players to be selected. Vinny Borgesi, from the Selects Academy at South Kent Prep, will play for the Tri-City Storm (USHL) in the fall and is a Northeastern (HE) commit in 2022-23. Another player from the Selects Academy U-16 team defenseman Conor Shortall (St. John’s) returns to Canada and will play for the Drummondville Voltigeurs (QMJHL) in the fall. Ex-Wolf Pack, Wojtek Wolski, and ex-Sound Tiger, Tomas Malec, were released from HC Ocelari Trinec and HC Brno (Czech Republic-CEL) respectively. Ex-Pack, Petr Zamorsky, has signed an extension with HK Hradec Kralove (Czech Republic-CEL). Ex-Wolf Pack, Adam Tambellini, stays in Sweden going from MODO (Sweden-SHL) to Rogle BK (Sweden-SHL). Ex-Sound Tiger, Dustin Friesen, stays in Germany going from ERC Ingolstadt (Germany-DEL) to Iserlohn (Germany-DEL). A trio of ex-Wolf Pack/CT Whale did not have their contracts renewed by SC Rapperswil-Jona (Switzerland-LNA) in Tom Pyatt, Casey Wellman, and Danny Kristo. Philip Samuelsson, the eldest son of former Whaler great, Rangers player, and assistant coach, ex-Wolf Pack, and Avon Old Farms assistant coach, Ulf Samuelsson is being pursued by Dynamo Riga (Latvia-KHL). Defenseman Mike Little (Enfield) signs a two-year extension with SonderjyskE (Denmark-DHL). ARENA NEWS The expansion NHL Seattle completion date on the Key Arena known temporarily as the “New Arena at Seattle Center” has been pushed to June 2021, four months before their first puck is scheduled to be drop. The original date was January 2021 date in part because of the coronavirus mandated shutdown. Declared as a public-private project, the $930-million-project was restarted this past Monday. The temporary posts holding its historic 44 million pound roof are being transitioned from temporary posts to permanent ones, now that the extra excavation has been completed, the concrete for the posts has been poured. Construction on its brand new state-of-the-art training at old Northgate Mall location, however, it's still just started two weeks ago remains closed. NHL Seattle was very close to unveiling its team name, color scheme, season ticket packages, and likely building naming rights, but it has been postponed till the COVID-19 pandemic is under control and the stay at home measures in place in Washington state are lifted. OVG (Oak View Group) overseeing construction, has two other major arena projects nationally that have been paused. In New York, at Belmont Park in Long Island, the future $1.3 billion 17,113 seat new home for the New York Islanders was halted by executive order of Governor Andrew Cuomo in response to the COVID-19 outbreak in NYC and the immediate need to build several new hospitals, freeing up building supplies. This could affect the original October 2021 opening date. The other arena project is in Palm Springs, California to house its yet named AHL farm team of the expansion NHL Seattle team postponed its February 18th groundbreaking of the $250 million dollar arena, what was described at the time was called, “unexplained circumstances”. Now with California, one of the COVID-19 hot spots, its original September 2021 opening seems in jeopardy for the 10,000 seats for hockey (11,000 for concerts and shows) in a collaboration between OVG Group and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. No new groundbreaking date has yet been set. The proposed new arena in Suffolk County Long Island in Ronkonkoma part of a $1 billion dual-use project was given a second extension in mid-December for April, there has been no word on the project's future or status. The project was to feature a 7,500-seat hockey arena, 6,000-seat outdoor stadium, hotel and office building on a 40-acre site that also has an LIRR station. The pandemic situation has forced the Chicago-based JLL (Jones, Lang, Lasalle) Group to likely seek another extension next month. The group hired NHL Hall of Famer former Islander and Ranger Pat LaFontaine, last year to secure letters of commitment from an AHL team, college or junior teams to be the primary tenants in the proposed new arena. Once those commitments are secured, then the Suffolk County council was expected to then get a summary of the bid to develop a Master Builder plan and to start construction. Read the full article

Furious 7
The first official spinoff of the Fast and Furious franchise hit theaters this weekend with the release of Hobbs and Shaw. It only seems fitting then with that hitting theaters to continue my trek through covering the series here with 2015’s Furious 7 (trailer). The seventh entry in the series showcased Jason Statham in the role of the unstoppable villain, Deckard Shaw. Furious 7 also infamously went down as the last film in the series to feature one of the two franchise lead-men, Paul Walker since he perished in a tragic car wreck in the midst of shooting this film. His brother took his place in several stand-in spots for the final scenes to be shot with his character. Needless to say one of the burning questions I had originally going into this at the theaters opening weekend was how were they going to handle writing him off the series? I will cross that bridge in towards the end of this entry. Furious 7 has a new director at the helm with James Wan of Saw, Insidious and Conjuring fame. He has a killer opening shot of Deckard Shaw at the hospital bedside of his brother, Owen (Luke Evans), who barely survived the aftermath of his clash with Dom (Vin Diesel) in the last film and Deckard promising to avenge him. Another opening act shot that gelled with me was Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and Dom revisiting the Race Wars rally for the first time in the series since the original film to get our obligatory drag race out of the way early where Letty easily lays waste to her opposition. I appreciated the callback to Race Wars, and was surprised to see them dig out periphery character Hector (Noel Gugliemi) from the original film to make a fun cameo too.
Just like the post-credits tag scene in Fast & Furious 6 eluded to, Furious 7 finally puts a tidy bow on the split timelines in the canon. Stick with me…..the previous three Fast films technically all took place before Tokyo Drift since Han (Sung Kang) perished in that film but the filmmakers liked him so much that they kept bringing him back. To wrap up this glaring loose end, after an exhilarating fight with Hobbs (Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson), Shaw breaks into Hobbs’ computer to find the location of Han and assassinate him to get Dom’s attention. Props to Furious 7 for tracking down Lucas Black to get him back in his role as Sean Boswell for a scene with Dom wrapping up the Tokyo chapter of the series. I remember being both stoked to see Black back, and bummed to see him limited to only one scene and almost expected to see him welcomed as part of Dom’s gang. There are currently rumors he will be back in a bigger role in the upcoming ninth film in the series. Since we still see Dom’s crew at Han’s funeral and all the succeeding events seemingly transpire in the weeks afterwards it is safe to presume this movie still is set in 2006 when Tokyo Drift initially released….that is until we see in the early part of Furious 7 Letty visiting her old grave that has a 2009 death year on it from when we thought she died in the fourth film, which should have took place before Tokyo Drift…..ah forget it.
Anyways, point being is whenever year Furious 7 transpires, it is hard to believe it was in the 2000s decade (aka ‘The Aughts’) after Dom’s crew meets up with secret government ghost agent Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell). Mr. Nobody essentially gives the government’s unofficial backing to Dom’s gang as their go to master heist crew for secret-ops missions. He also introduces the gang to all kinds of high-tech level gadgetry right that seems like it was pulled right out of the latest 007 film. I could not remember the name of Russell’s character when writing this and I cannot stand the name ‘Mr. Nobody’ the moment I looked it up for reference for this so I will instead just refer to his character as his real name Kurt Russell from here on out because Kurt Russell is portrayed as a bonafide badass in this film. Russell helps Dom’s crew rescue kidnapped hacker, Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel), who has knowledge of a ‘God’s Eye’ device which has access to all the security and cell phone cameras across the world. Of course, there are the now-obligatory ridiculous stunt scenes that result in Team Ride or Die snatching Ramsey away from the terrorists. It involves a hilarious sequence of skydiving cars and culminates with Dom escaping terrorists by intentionally flipping his car down a cliff and literally walking right out of the totaled car and brushing it off without any injury! Not even a bandage! Trust me, things get even more gloriously ludicrous from there when Ramsey tells the crew they must traverse to Abu Dhabi to procure the ‘God’s Eye.’ If you thought things were bonkers with the safe in Fast Five and the heroic tank leaps and infinite runway in the sixth movie, then props to Wan for somehow topping those stunts with a must-see to believe ‘Cars Can’t Fly’ moment in Furious 7 involving a three million dollar car and the Etihad Towers. It is easily one of the all-time ‘holy shit’ moments in big-budget blockbuster cinema history, and that is saying something!
After some more back and forth shenanigans with Shaw, everything comes to a boil in a heavy duty final act involving predator drones, car jousts, Hobbs donning a chain gun against a helicopter and an epic Dom vs Shaw street fight. This all adds up to Dom’s gang being masters at car-heisting, street races, breathtaking vehicle stunt-work and fluent in the latest and greatest top-secret government tech. 007 Car Heisters….or something like that. This is the first time I saw Furious 7 since the theaters and I forgot about how awesome the overall arc and climatic action/stunt-work/heist scenes were compared to the previous movies. It is easily in the same class with the raised stakes and budget the previous two movies established. A lot of that amazing stunt work is chronicled in the near two hours of extra features. Flying Cars is a fascinating watch to see how skydivers literally jumped out with flying cars to get those up-close camera shots during the car skydiving sequence. Tower Jumps is also worth checking out to see how the ‘Cars Can’t Fly’ sequence was pulled off. Both are quick watches at around seven minutes each while Talking Fast is a broader all encompassing extra at just over a half hour where Wan curates his favorite moments and scenes from the film and it nicely jumps to interviews with the cast members involved in each moment and Wan provides additional insight to how he pulled off some key shots. Talking Fast suffices for the lack of a commentary track from Wan that Justin Lin spoiled me with on the last four Fast home video releases.
There are a few other smaller extras on the BluRay covering other stunt-work and fight scenes, but what surprisingly jumped out to me in this last smattering of bonus features is one covering the making of the Fast and Furious Supercharged Ride attraction at Universal Studios. I coincidentally went on that ride on vacation earlier this year and can confirm it captures the spirit of the films and spares no expense when compared to the other big budget rides at Universal Studios. Finally, there is the Wiz Khalifa music video, ‘See You Again’ that is easily identified for being the song that closed off Furious 7 with its emotional farewell scene for Paul Walker. Yes, it is time to touch on Furious 7 sending Paul Walker off into the sunset. Wan and the rest of the filmmakers could not have done it any better. It is undoubtedly a rough scene to get through and I would be lying if I said I was not holding back any sniffles and getting dusty-eyed throughout it. Part of me thought they were going to kill off Connor, and I had no idea what the script originally called for, but the final on-screen product was the perfect way to sunset the Connor and Mia (Jordana Brewster) characters out of the picture by them going on their own to be a family. I will never forget I was at a gas station shortly after leaving a minor league hockey game with another film buff when I found out about the news and we both needed a moment to take it all in. Ironically enough, earlier that day before the hockey game I was at a pawn shop and bought the PS2 Fast and Furious game.
This was the final film in the franchise I watched along with Dan, Vinny and Alex of Giant Bomb in their Film and 40s commentary series. It made for once again another highly entertaining watch as I echoed many of their sentiments throughout. Highlights include the quote ‘That’s some Asura’s Wrath shit’ during a big stunt moment, Dan picking Alex’s brain on getting into Deftones, priceless reactions to the huge car skydiving and tower leap moments, predicting future celebrity villains, them trying to add up the Tokyo Drift plot lines like I was earlier and searching online for a replica Vin Diesel cross necklace on Amazon. Oh yeah, and I did indeed share along in the sniffles with them during the aforementioned emotional final scene. And that is Furious 7. I apologize for repeating myself, but it seems worth repeating all I remembered going into it again was the Paul Walker farewell and I forgot how good the stuntwork and caliber of jaw-dropping moments were here especially when stacked up to prior films in the series. Again, Furious 7 stands in the same league with the big budget blockbusters that the fifth and sixth installments evolved into and I loved how it found another way to raise the stakes by introducing Kurt Russell’s character into the fray and giving them the government’s unofficial blessing as being super-hi-tech ghost agents. With the untimely death of Paul Walker and the fitting farewell scene for him to close off the film I will forever have a special place for Furious 7 in the brand’s hierarchy.

21 Fantasy Hockey Rambles
Every Sunday, we'll share 21 Fantasy Rambles — formerly 20 Fantasy Thoughts — from our writers at DobberHockey. These thoughts are curated from the past week's ‘Daily Ramblings’.
Writers: Michael Clifford, Ian Gooding, Cam Robinson, and Dobber
1. It has been a downright awful week for Frederik Andersen (I’m experiencing this firsthand), but at least he earned a win on Friday. It’s not often that a goalie earns a win after allowing six goals, but that’s the kind of game it was.
Andersen was pulled in his previous two starts after allowing four goals before the midway point of each game. He’ll probably be fine over the long haul, though he could be wearing down a bit after an extremely heavy workload. Entering Saturday action, Andersen had a higher save total (1584) than any goalie, while only Connor Hellebuyck had faced more shots than Andersen (1725).
If defense wins championships, then the Leafs will have a tough time making it out of the Atlantic the way their blue line is currently constructed. (mar16)
2. Since being traded to the Leafs about a month and a half ago, Jake Muzzin has 14 points (4g-10a) in 23 games, so he’s already been more productive with Toronto than he was with Los Angeles (21 points in 50 games). This in spite of logging about a minute and a half less ice time with the Leafs than he had with the Kings. So, fewer minutes, but the minutes have been more productive. (mar16)
3. I’ll agree with colleague Adam Daly-Frey in his most recent Looking Ahead: Don’t be afraid to drop Jonathan Drouin if you’ve been debating the idea.
Drouin was held without a point again on Saturday, which means that he has been held without a point in his last eight games and 15 of his last 16 games. He did record four assists in that one game, and he had recorded nine points in the three games prior to the deep freeze. However, we are now in the thick of the ‘what-have-you-done-for-me-lately’ portion of the season. (mar17)
4. I grabbed Vinnie Hinostroza in one league and added him to my lineup, literally forgetting about him until Thursday night, when he recorded a hat trick while firing eight shots on goal and leading the Coyotes to yet another win. Sometimes, forgetting is a good thing because I could have just as well removed him after he went four games without a point earlier in the month.
Since January 20, Hinostroza has 11 goals and 21 points in 25 games, which easily makes him the highest-scoring Yote during a stretch in which Arizona has fought their way into a Western Conference playoff spot. So, that means he’s been playing with the Coyotes’ big guns (whoever they may be), right? Sure, if their names are Brad Richardson and Michael Grabner. The Coyotes don’t offer much else when it comes to scoring, unfortunately. (mar15)
5. Blackhawks’ Brendan Perlini is cruising after some tough times earlier this season. Perlini recorded just four points (3g-1a) in his first 29 games with the Blackhawks after being traded from Arizona.
Since then, he has been red hot with eight goals and 10 points over his last seven games, including another goal on Saturday. It helps that Perlini has recently been matched up with Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Strome, both of whom have been scoring at about a point per game as Blackhawks. (mar17)
6. Anaheim rookie Troy Terry won Third Star from the NHL last week for his two goals and five assists.
I had a lot of hope at the outset of the season for many of Anaheim’s rookies, namely Sam Steel. Terry has loads of skill but I was concerned about him being stuck behind Corey Perry, Jakob Silfverberg and Ondrej Kase, whereas I saw Steel as the potential 3C. Needless to say, that hasn’t exactly worked out.
Terry’s fantasy upside is a fair debate because he’s not a guy who has shot much in the AHL (92 shots in 41 games), or the NHL (20 shots in 23 games). As a rookie, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt but there aren’t a lot of guys who can have significant fantasy relevance while averaging under two shots per game. From what I can tell, there is one skater in the top-100 players in standard Yahoo! leagues averaging under two shots per game, and that’s Brandon Tanev, and he’s exactly the 100th player – he also has 232 hits, a total which Terry may not amass in his entire NHL career.
Again, there is time and room for growth here. Terry has played well since Randy Carlyle was replaced (as the team has been better), so there’s lots to be encouraged about here for 2019-20. (mar12)
7. Vince Dunn scored twice for the Blues in Saturday’s victory – goals number 10 and 11 from him. While Jordan Binnington is receiving a ton of the credit for the Blues’ turnaround, we should also give props to the defense.
The Blues currently have three defensemen with double-digit goal totals: Alex Pietrangelo (12), Dunn (11) and Colton Parayko (10). As of Saturday afternoon, no other team had more than two. As well, the Blues were leading the NHL with 44 goals from defensemen.
In just his second NHL season, Dunn has been quietly productive, reaching the 30-point mark in 67 games. (mar17)
8. We will need to wait at least one week for the debut of Canucks’ hotshot prospect, Quinn Hughes. As a result of an injury from last weekend’s University of Michigan game, Hughes has a bone bruise and was to wear a walking boot for at least a week.
The silver lining is that with his NHL debut being delayed, Vancouver fans won’t have to worry about the team inadvertently sticking him in the lineup for more than 10 games, which would make him eligible for the Seattle expansion draft. There should be absolutely no rush on the Canucks’ part to get Hughes into the lineup. (mar15)
9. I wouldn’t be surprised if Hughes makes an impact quickly once he gets some NHL action. The Canucks are desperate for a puck-moving defenseman. I posted my Top 50 Fantasy Prospect Defensemen this past week and Hughes is No.2 on that list. (mar11)
10. So, it’s that time of year where guys who are property of a franchise, be it in college or overseas, start making their way to the NHL to get some games in.
One guy dynasty owners were hoping for was Vitali Kravtsov, the 19-year old Rangers first rounder from the same draft. It appears that his KHL team will not terminate his contract, allowing him to join New York this season. Rangers fans and fantasy owners are going to have to wait until next season to possibly see him in the lineup. (mar13)
Now, over to you, Dante Fabbro. (mar11)
11. If you were counting on Antoine Roussel for a few points and a lot of penalty minutes, he is done for the year with a knee injury suffered Wednesday. Roussel was receiving second-line minutes with Bo Horvat and, as of Thursday morning, was second in the NHL with 118 penalty minutes.
The Roussel news seemed to be overshadowed on Vancouver sports talk radio by the topic of Loui Eriksson’s first healthy scratch as a Canuck. There’s a very short list of players that have less value than Eriksson in a salary cap league. If you can think of any, feel free to list them in the comments below.
Mercifully, this could be the beginning of the end for Eriksson in Vancouver, though a buyout this offseason will hardly help the Canucks financially. Eriksson also has a full no-trade on his contract, which has a $6 million cap hit. Ugh. (mar15)
12. Caps’ Brett Connolly is just one goal away from reaching 20 for the first time in his career, while he has already set a career high with 40 points. The 2010 sixth overall pick hasn’t lived up to his draft-day potential and is already on his third NHL team, but he’s still showing signs of having a productive career (though I’m not as sold on him for fantasy purposes as others might be). (mar15)
13. If you’ve been carrying Kyle Turris this long, you’re safe to drop him for any more immediate help. Turris was ‘healthy scratched’ for each of the Preds’ last two games, Thursday and Saturday.
With just seven goals and 22 points in 46 games, Turris has produced less than half a point per game. Surely, you can do better for your fantasy team, particularly at the center position. This is not the kind of production that the Predators should expect from their second-line center as they near the playoffs. (mar15)
14. It might be a little too late for the Panthers to make the playoffs, so they are seeing what they have with young goalie Samuel Montembeault. The rookie has made four consecutive starts, all wins. Still, unless the Panthers find a way to get out of either Roberto Luongo’s or James Reimer’s contract this offseason, it’s difficult to forecast where Montembeault fits in long-term. (mar15)
Montembeault is a goalie that I have been a fan of for quite some time. Right now, he is Florida’s best option in the pipeline and, since this is a young team on the rise (yeah, I’ve said this for two years now but it’s gonna happen), this could end up being the perfect storm. (mar11)
15. It's been a poor year for most Devils, though injuries are certainly a factor. With that said, it’s been a sublime season for Damon Severson. His 11 goals are a career-high, as are his 37 points (he had 31 in 2016-17). He’s been hard to roster in leagues counting plus-minus but has been very solid otherwise. With him and Will Butcher, there are nice pieces on the Devils’ blue line.
16. There was a good Ramblings over at Dobber Prospects this past week from Jokke Nevalainen discussing, among many other things, Kaapo Kakko and Aleksi Heponiemi.
That second name seems to be a forgotten prospect to some people as Henrik Borgstrom solidifies himself with the Panthers but, as Jokke points out, Heponiemi is among the Liiga scoring leaders and just turned 20 in January.
This has been a spectacular season for Heponiemi and if he can crack the roster in October, could go a long way in lengthening the lineup and making Florida even more dangerous offensively. There are a lot of bridges to cross between now and then but it’s still a very solid effort from the young Finn. (mar13)
17. Just before his arm injury this past week, Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk was having a very solid year in this his second full season, helping the Bruins drive the play forward and being a good starting point for their attack.
Luckily, the injury doesn’t seem to be too severe and he should be back soon. Not that he’s a key cog because they do have guys like Torey Krug, Charlie McAvoy and John Moore, but having more good puck-moving defenseman is never a bad thing. (mar13)
18. I was a big believer in Brandon Saad’s rebound from last year and he’s currently sitting with 23 goals and should probably have more. Assists are a problem (just 18) and the lack of PP production, as it has been for most of his career, is an ongoing issue. He’s still a very good five-on-five player, though even I’ll admit that at this point he’s a better real-world player than fantasy option. (mar13)
19. It’s as if signing the big contract has helped Jakob Silfverberg turn the corner. He has points nine points in the eight games since. And that’s on a team that is really just not scoring.
We know this song and dance already, though. Every year without fail, in either the first or the second half, Silfverberg produces like a 70-point player. In the other half of the season, he produces like a 20-point player. If only we could get an advanced heads up on which half will be which.
With GM Bob Murray coaching the team right now, I feel pretty comfortable with Silf continuing for the duration. Murray needs to make his latest big signing look like a good one and you can see it in Jakob’s minutes – both at ES and on the PP. (mar11)
20. Jared McCann also had two points Sunday and he has eight in his last seven games.
I remember when poolies jumped on Jared McCann really quickly when he surprisingly made the Canucks as a 19-year-old in 2015. He was rushed. The Stratford native (as am I) is now in his fourth NHL season, though he was mostly in the minors for one of them, so I consider this his third.
These days, he’s clicking with Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel. We’ve learned from Conor Sheary (and going further back – Colby Armstrong) that there is no guarantee with this plum placement. I do have more confidence in McCann’s upside and pedigree than I had with Sheary, though. And 10 times out of ten, I would roll the dice on just the ‘chance’ that it continues on into next season. (mar11)
21. One big injury update from Wednesday was that Ottawa star defenceman Thomas Chabot has been diagnosed with a broken toe and is week-to-week. The team has 12 games left and were this any other organization, I would say that rushing back the franchise cornerstone player from a broken bone in a completely lost season so he can suit up with an AHL roster isn’t possible. But this is Ottawa, so whatever the worst possible option is, it’s definitely on the table. (mar13)
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, folks!!

Reilly Johnson is greeted by Sterling Guzman (#2) and Griffin Conine (#9) at home plate after scoring on a McGregory Contreras grand slam. A smiling Tanner Kirwer looks on from the left.
The Vancouver Canadians turned back the clock with their throwback jerseys and returned to their winning ways Tuesday. The C’s dumped the Tri-City Dust Devils by a score of 7-1 at Nat Bailey Stadium for their first home victory of 2018.
The C’s took the lead with a two-out hit in the first inning courtesy of Jake Brodt. The former Santa Clara Bronco took a pitch from Nick Kuzia up the middle to score a Nick Podkul walk. Podkul scored from second after Griffin Conine moved him into scoring position with a groundout to first.
Vancouver added to its lead with another two-out run in the second. Bryan Lizardo singled to left and came around to score on a Tanner Kirwer double down the left field line which snuck past Dust Devils outfielder Mason House. Kirwer made it to third on the throw but he was left there when Vinny Capra struck out.

McGregory Contreras had a lot to smile about Tuesday night with two extra-base hits.
The third inning saw the C’s break it open. Podkul drew his second walk in as many at-bats and Conine also heard ball four from the umpire. Sterling Guzman would drive in Podkul with a base hit to left to make it 3-0 C’s. Joe Galindo took over for Kuzia on the mound but walked Reilly Johnson to load the bases. Lizardo ran the count full before being called out on strikes but McGregory Contreras would pick up the slack. He socked a grand slam to left to give Vancouver a 7-0 lead.

Joey Murray set the tone for the C’s with two shutout innings against Tri-City Tuesday.
The Dust Devils could not solve the C’s pitching staff of Joey Murray, Sean Wymer and Will McAffer who shared the first six innings evenly. They would break the shutout in the seventh against Justin Watts. Luis Ascunsion doubled and that was followed by a Luke Becker single and a House to load the bases. Jose Lezama would lift a sacrifice fly to score Ascunsion for Tri-City’s only run.
Marcus Reyes shut things down with two scoreless frames to help the C’s pick up their fourth win of the season.

C’s shortstop Vinny Capra did a nice job jumping to flag a high throw from Johnson to tag out Ascunsion trying to steal second in the second inning. Capra also managed to get the only hit off rehabbing major leaguer Carter Capps by lining a 77 mile-per-hour breaking ball to left. Capra would swipe second uncontested but got no further in the fifth. Capps was up to 94-95 miles per hour.
Right fielder Griffin Conine made his Vancouver debut wearing #9 after wearing #10 in Spokane. The Blue Jays second-round pick from Duke University went 0-for-4 with a walk and scored on Contreras’ grand slam. Conine also made a strong throw from right field and nearly got Reinaldo Ilarraza at third base after tagging up from second. Lizardo could not hang on to the ball at third.
Contreras had a couple of gaffes on the night, one of them purely comic relief. Contreras was charged with an error in left when the ball clanked off his glove on a Illarraza fly ball to extend the fifth. Contreras had an adventure in the on-deck circle when he was sent to the ground on a Lizardo foul ball. Lizardo would later walk and Contreras cranked a double off the manual scoreboard from Wen-Hua Sung in center field. The C’s could not take advantage as Kirwer and Capra struck out. Andres Munoz was brought in to face Capra and struck him out on three pitches registering 100, 100 and 102.
Tri-City manager and former Toronto Blue Jay Mike McCoy came out to argue that a foul ball caught by Lizardo near the C’s dugout on the third base side should have not have counted. The catch was made in an area that is marked off as out of play according to the ground rules and McCoy had a good case. However, Tre Carter was ruled out on the play to end the fifth.
Bryan Lizardo gets ready to slide into home plate with the C’s second run in the second inning Tuesday.
Kirwer made a nice running catch to help out his fellow Canadian McAffer by catching up to a fly ball at the warning track in center to start the sixth. Michael Curry then hit a slow roller to first that somehow remained fair along the first base line and that made for an easy unassisted putout by Guzman at first. The final out came when Justin Paulsen fouled out to Johnson on the third base side but not before Johnson collided with Lizardo at third base. Johnson was winded but was able to continue.
Ascunsion scored the lone run of the game for the Dust Devils after nearly hitting one over the short fence in field, settling for a double off Watts. A Becker single and a House walk loaded the bases but Watts helped himself out by fielding a comebacker from Illarraza after sawing off his bat. Watts fired it to Capra at second for the 1-6 fielder’s choice to get House at second.
Sterling Guzman adjusts his batting gloves after a single in the third inning Monday.
Vancouver had 10 hits and six walks in this one. Contreras, Guzman and Kirwer had two hits apiece. Podkul walked three times and every C’s hitter reached base at least once. They were 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base. Vancouver is 4-8 on the season, three games behind 7-5 Everett for first place in the Northwest League North Division. Tri-City drops to 6-6 and Spokane is now 5-7.
The C’s play the second game of this three-game series at 7:05 pm Wednesday at the Nat. Lefthander Randy Pondler (0-2, 2.45) hopes it will be third time lucky in getting any type of run support other than zero. Henry Henry (0-0, 1.86) is the probable starter for Tri-City.
The game will be on CanadiansBaseball.com and TSN 1040 with Rob Fai. The pre-game show is set for 6:00 pm.

McAffer’s offerings ranged 85-95 miler per hour, settling in at 90-92. Watts had one strikeout that clocked in at 90. He was around 88-90 and scraped 94. The risk-taking, aggressive Eagles are just what the stodgy NFL needs
yahoo
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Doug Pederson doesn’t seem like the type to buck NFL convention.
The Philadelphia Eagles coach carries himself with confidence, but he’s not brash. He spent 10 rather unremarkable NFL seasons as a backup quarterback. When he was hired as Eagles head coach, it wasn’t splashy. Certainly not as splashy as the Eagles coach before him, Chip Kelly.
Maybe that’s how Pederson became a bit of an iconoclast and did it under the radar.
The Eagles do many things in a different way. They take an aggressive approach on offense and defense. They have incorporated as many college offensive concepts as anyone in the NFL. They use analytics across the board, even as some old-guard NFL types mock that approach. In a league that seems to adore punting, the Eagles often go for it on fourth down. These aren’t revolutionary concepts, but it’s a nice change in a league that is often stuck in its ways. These Eagles are rarely boring.
“He’s made it known he’s going to be aggressive and he’s going to play to win the game, not to lose,” Eagles center Jason Kelce said.
[Stream Super Bowl LII live on the Yahoo Sports mobile app]
Let’s start with Pederson’s proclivity for going for it on fourth down, because it says a lot about his approach. Fourth down is a punting down for most NFL teams. It’s so ingrained in NFL culture that announcers still breathlessly talk about a team gambling when they go for it on fourth-and-short in opposing territory, even when the numbers say they should be going for it. While some teams are scared of being criticized for going for it too much, the Eagles went for it on fourth down 26 times this season, second in the league, with an NFL-best 17 conversions.
The Eagles study fourth-down data over the offseason. They’re not just making the time-honored “gut decisions,” they’re based on probability. Sometimes Pederson has to make a 50-50 call, though it’s all based in math. And oftentimes the math says to go for it, though teams ignore statistics to their own detriment. Analytics are often derided in the NFL, even though smart teams use them and it seems weird to not want as much information as possible.
Again, none of this is reinventing the wheel. But so few coaches seem to understand the concept, that it’s refreshing Pederson gets it and has had success on fourth down.
“Aggressive play-calling and aggressive coaches breed confidence in the group, right?” Kelce said. “If you didn’t think you’d get it on fourth down, you wouldn’t go for it. The fact that he has confidence in the offense allows us to have confidence in ourselves.”
The most ironic part of Pederson’s new-age approach might be how he has incorporated college concepts into his offense. Watch Super Bowl LII and you’ll see some of the run-pass option plays (often called “RPOs”) that you’ll see when you watch the Big 12. It’s funny because Kelly was run out of Philadelphia and derided for his new ideas, like his college-based offensive concepts. Then when Carson Wentz went down, Pederson actually took some of the things Nick Foles did with Kelly and introduced them into the offense. Pederson started using run-pass options with Alex Smith when Pederson was offensive coordinator at Kansas City and carried it over to Philly.
Kelly was ridiculed for his concepts practically from the moment he arrived in Philadelphia from the University of Oregon. Pederson is being celebrated for his ingenuity at the Super Bowl. Go figure. Pederson made sure to note that the college-based concepts aren’t his entire offense, but he’s willing to incorporate some that work.
“We continue to adapt to our personnel and the type of players we have,” Pederson said. “I’m big about not force-feeding a certain scheme or play down anybody’s throats. I want to do what works.”
There’s an aggressive attitude toward play-calling, as well. The NFC championship game was a good example. Most teams would play it conservative with backup Foles against a top-ranked Minnesota Vikings defense. The Eagles instead pushed the ball downfield, Foles threw for 352 yards and the Eagles blasted the Vikings 38-7.
“Honestly, we didn’t expect that,” Vikings cornerback Xavier Rhodes said, according to CBS Sports. “We expected him to dink and dunk, throw check downs, but he came out guns blazing.”
If this was supposed to be a more conservative offense with Foles, it hasn’t always shown. Warren Sharp of SharpFootballAnalysis.com has noted that the Eagles (who are a shotgun-based offense) used the shotgun formation 70 percent of the time with Wentz and upped that to 77 percent with Foles. Part of that is the use of RPOs.
The defense complements the offensive approach well. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has long been known for an aggressive pressure-based scheme. According to Pro Football Focus, the Eagles led the NFL with 271 pressures this season, 27 more than any other team. Seven players had 20 or more pressures, which led the NFL. The Eagles don’t blitz a ton, because their front four is good at getting to the quarterback, but aggression and pressure with strong man coverage behind it is a cornerstone of their success. That plays well with the offensive mindset.
This is the mentality Pederson has set from day one, and Eagles players say you can see it in their practices. In many ways it sounds similar to Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, who practically treats practices like games.
“The aggressiveness at practice, the competitiveness we practice with, it gets intense,” defensive end Vinny Curry said. “You’re just seeing things from practice carry over to the game.”
Cornerback Jalen Mills’ college coach at LSU was Les Miles, who turned risk-taking into performance art. So he’s not surprised by anything, but appreciated Pederson’s mindset from day one.
“When it comes to Coach Doug, you see it at practice,” cornerback Jalen Mills said. “He’s trying to air it out on the defense or run it down our throat on the defense. We get surprised by it sometimes. But we see it every day.”
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson’s aggressiveness, especially on fourth down, has been a trademark for his team. (AP)

I Just Need Quiet
whumptober day 3: overstimulation

characters: jake seresin, sarah grant, sarah's family
warnings: overstimutaion, family gatherings, holidays, crying, please let me know if i missed anything

this is also apart of my oc series j and s so the tag list for that is included! and this is based on my own personal experience in this situation
whumptober 2023 masterlist
summary: family can be a lot, especially around the holidays, and it's okay to take a break when it gets too much... sometimes you just need quiet, and that's okay.
“Okay, so what do I need to know about your family?” Jake asked Sarah as they got ready.
She laughed as she curled her hair, “Well, first thing is, you never bring up the Longhorns. That alone is a death sentence.” Jake chuckled and nodded as he looked through his clothes for a shirt, “Noted. Anything else?”
Sarah sighed a little, “The house is gonna get pretty cramped. So it can get hot in the house, and it won’t take long for it to get loud. I know you come from a big family too, probably bigger since both sides are big, but you usually have it in a bigger house than this. And we might have about 20-40 people in this house, so it might get crowded.”
Jake nodded, “Got it.” He came over and kissed her head, “I’m really excited to meet them. And apologize for not being at Thanksgiving.” She hummed softly and turned to peck his lips, “You had to go back to base, they’ll understand.”
He smiled and pecked her lips again and again before moving to go take a shower while Sarah got dressed.
A few hours later, Jake was pulling into Sarah’s aunt’s driveway and parking next to her sister’s truck.
“Alright, hopefully they like me,” Jake chuckled, squeezing Sarah’s hand. She smiled at him, “I don’t think you have anything to worry about, Cowboy.”
He pecked her lips before getting out and racing around the truck to get to her side before she could open her door.
“Such a gentleman,” she giggled as he helped her out of his truck. “Anything for you, Sugar,” he said with a wide smile before kissing her forehead. She kissed his cheek and they both grabbed the things they brought before heading inside.
Sarah walked in first, thanking Jake as he held open the glass door for her.
She turned and waited for him to join her before announcing their arrival.
“Oh, well look who’s here! And she brought a friend.”
Sarah laughed, “Hi Aunt San.” She gave her aunt a hug before turning to Jake, “This is Jake, he’s my boyfriend.” Her aunt’s eyes widened a little, “This is your pilot?” Sarah nodded and felt Jake come up behind her. “Jake, this is my Aunt San.” He smiled and gave her a hug, “It’s nice to finally meet you.” His eyes scanned the house, “And it seems I have plenty of people to meet.”
Aunt San nodded, “You sure do, but I’m first so that’s what’s important.”
Sarah rolled her eyes and laughed, “Oh um, Jake has the food, will you show him to the kitchen while I put the gifts up?” “Oh of course, follow me Jake.”
Jake nodded and followed Sarah’s aunt to the kitchen as she went to the living room.
As she walked into the room she smiled and greeted everyone, talking as she put the presents in the respective bins.
She glanced around, finding very little room to sit and feeling that pressure building in her chest already. Seriously Sarah, you just got here, she thought to herself as the voices started to muddle together.
Sending a smile to everyone, she left to go find Jake so she could do the rounds of hellos and introduce him to her family before they started to eat.
It didn’t take long after their arrival for dinner to start. After that they played bingo until all the gifts were gone and then they brought out other games while eating the rest of the finger foods that were left.
Jake and Sarah sat at the table, Jake playing spoons with Sarah’s uncles, her sister, Elizabeth, and a few of her cousins. Sarah was just sitting there next to him, resting against him and watching the game and drinking ice water.
At first he thought nothing of it, thinking that she was only talking when she addressed to not mess up his game and distract him. But she was unusually flushed, fanning herself a few times and pulling her hair off her neck into a bun. She was taking deep calculated breaths, he could feel her chest moving against his arm.
But when she sat up and started to shake out her hands, popping her knuckles and flexing her fingers, he knew something was off.
“Sugar… are you alright?” Jake asked her quietly as Elizabeth was shuffling the cards and setting the spoons back up. “Mhm,” she nodded, not looking up from where she was picking at her nails. “You sure?” “Yeah, I’m fine.”
She was mumbling, and if Jake knew anything it was that if Sarah mumbled… she wasn’t fine.
He went to say something else but was dealt a hand and the next game started.
This round he’s distracted. Glancing between his cards and her the whole time, picking up on her rhythmically tapping her fingers on her thumbs – index to pinky then pinky to index. She was inhaling through her nose and out through her mouth as her eyes stayed on the table.
Before he can say anything, the sounds of flat palms smacking the kitchen table and then a few loud shouts and laughs from those that managed to get a spoon.
Jake’s attention is pulled to that, realizing that he missed getting a spoon. But he didn’t really care, something was up with his girlfriend and she wasn’t telling him.
“Dang… that’s alright, I was getting tired of winning anyway,” Jake commented, toothpick moving to the side of his mouth as he chuckled and tossed his cards down. The table laughed and set up another round.
As they did this, Jake turned to Sarah to talk to her but found her getting up and walking towards the front door, attempting to discreetly wipe her eyes but Jake noticed it.
Confused, Jake turned to Elizabeth, “Hey, do you know what’s wrong? I asked but she said she was fine…” She sighed, “I think she’s just a little overwhelmed, it happens.” Jake nodded, humming to himself and he looked over to the door, thinking of how he could help.
Sarah sat down on the porch swing, trying to delicately wipe her tears so she didn’t smudge her makeup.
“Damn it…” She swore under her breath, shaking her hands out and trying to calm down.
She hated that this happened more often than she would like to admit. She loved being with her family, but sometimes it was just too much.
With everyone having to be close and everyone talking, it got hot quickly and it got loud.
Now she could handle loud, she was a coach – loud things weren’t uncommon. But it was loud conversations. Her brain was trying to listen to everyone and it all just muddled in her mind and it affected everything else.
Sometimes the lights would be too bright or the different scents of food mingling made her brain foggy, that mixed with the heat and the volume of the room – it was too much stimulation at once.
So she always just went outside, letting Arkansas’s freezing December weather bite the heat off her skin. It wasn’t loud outside either, just the muffled sounds of people talking inside and the cars on the highway in front of the house.
She sat there for a few minutes, her eyes closed and she tried to take even breaths and keep the tears in their ducts.
But then she heard the door open and looked over to see Jake come out, holding his Carhartt coat in his hand.
“Hey,” he greeted gently, coming over to her on the bench. “What’s wrong?” Sarah shook her head as she moved on the bench to give him room. “It’s nothi-”
“Sarah, I know you. What’s wrong?”
She sighed and let her head fall into her hands as Jake sat next to her. He rubbed her back, waiting patiently for her to talk.
“It’s too much. It’s really loud and really hot and there’s a lot of smells, the lights are too damn bright… I just…” She sighed, tears slipping down her face as she leaned on Jake’s shoulder as she talked.
“I just need quiet…”
Jake nodded, resting his cheek on her head, “I understand. I can go back–” “No, please stay…” He nodded again and put an arm around her back and on the arm rest. Using his other hand, he pulled Sarah’s legs into his lap.
He held up his jacket, inside facing the both of them. “Put your arm in the sleeve,” he told her, nodding to the sleeve hole closest to her. “What, w-” “Trust me, just do it,” he said with a playful grin.
Sarah sighed and slid her arm in the sleeve, looking at Jake to see him doing the same thing.
Jake then gently pushed her head into his shoulder and kissed her forehead.
“Jake… Darlin’, what are you doing?”
“You need quiet, so we’re gonna have quiet… now shhh and just snuggle.”
She couldn’t help but giggle as she inhaled the faint scent of hay, leather, bergamot, and whiskey that seemed infused with the fibers of the jacket. The scent that always seemed to calm her down.
“Thank you, Jake…”
“I love you, Sugar.”
“I love you too, Cowboy.”

Y/N 'Star' Rogers
“I would rather them come home alive, than have to come home and face their devastated families knowing that I could have done more.”
y/n rogers, call sign: star, is a force to be reckoned with. she's a lot like her father in that way. she respects authority, until that authority is making her question who she is. she would rather get written up or discharged for insubordination than be the reason a fellow pilot doesn't get to go home. star wants to do all she can before she gives up. and underneath that, she's an empathetic person. she cares deeply about her fellow pilots and wants to care for them in the air and on the ground. she's sweet and kind, she's the one you want to go to if you have a problem or need a friend. there are times where she's the one that needs the friend but she secludes herself from them. especially when it has to do with her dad or the shield and it's current holder... but at least one person is always gonna be there, no matter how hard she tries to hide...
