I really like that Hild never told Karli why she and Thorfinn are “fighting”. (That word alone also convinces me she hid how much she truly hated him in front of Karli.)

It would’ve been so easy to hurt Thorfinn by telling his son, by telling Karli how monstrous his father was, and what he had done to her, but she never did that. She knew better than to drag an innocent small child into it.
