This Memorial Day, we remember those who gave their lives for our country with Vincent Valdez’s “Excerpts For John” (2012). The series presents an unfolding sequence of a military funeral procession. Uniformed pallbearers carry a casket out of a cemetery and silently march their way through city streets and into an American barrio. The procession carries on until it reaches its final resting place: home. Let’s talk about polarization, about progress, about conversation itself. With figurative painting, it allows the artist to imagine their subjects in the fabric of how they’re experienced. Sometimes those feelings are personal and sometimes shared. Some artists have a way of dissecting the textbook with oil and canvas, re-enacting chapters of history with each stroke. [The City I, 2015-16, Oil on Canvas] by @vincentvaldez77 does that for me. • Real, imposing, large scale and without color (figuratively and literally), this work emphasizes the coordination of “hate” in this work. What’s really striking to me is how the negative space or “blackness” seems to be the highlight of the work (ironic right?), almost casting a dark spell over the work making it that much more sinister. Since the night is when most of the attacks on minorities take place, I can’t help but to feel emotionally charged by the work, knowing that when I lived in Texas I could’ve been a wrong turn away from ending up faca to face with this element of our society. This also reminds me of a very striking work by artist and friend @ti_rock_moore (Swipe Left) with her work “As the reigning order becomes weaker, it will present itself as more and more permanent” that shows 30 mannequins dressed in #KuKluxKlan hoods. “It's the fear racists experience as they watch society change.” There have been issues with minority communities having to deal with elements of hate in public spaces. A few years back the @whitneymuseum experienced backlash when artist #DanaSchutz painted an figurative abstraction of the open casket of #EmmittTill. • How do you feel about artwork that highlights the current climate? Necessary? Too much? Overbearing?
