60′s TV: The Sci-Fi Heroes

Whether the monsters and bad guys were under the sea, on another planet or in another dimension, there was always a team of heroes, containing at least two hot men in form fitting costumes with breakaway shirts, ready to do battle and save the world, ocean, time-space continuum, whatever. Who really cares? It was just lots of fun to imagine that the future held opportunities to explore new worlds and that hot looking, well built men would seldom keep their shirts on. I find it amazing that so many tv shows that were aimed at kids, particularly boys, had so much homo eroticism in them. 

Guy Williams and Mark Goddard played John Robinson and Don West on Lost in Space. The series depicted the first family to explore space, the Robinson’s. Mom, dad and the kids go on a mission with the hunky Major West and a bitchy, sarcastic robot. Along for the ride is the accidental stow away, Dr. Smith. It’s interesting that the two hot guys on the show are the only ones whose costumes seem to show off their bulges. Daddy Robinson can be seen in every episode hanging low on the left leg, and Major West, well, his is just all over the place.  

Star Trek, possibly the best known of all the tv sci-fi series, starred William Shatner as Captain Kirk, the man who left broken hearts, and probably std’s all over the galaxy. Seriously, the man was unbelievably horny for alien women. He also had a hard time keeping his shirt on. I don’t mena he was impatient, he was shirtless through many episodes. Leonard Nimoy played First Officer, Spock, a Vulcan with no emotion and a logical mind. I always had  a crush on Spock. George Takei was Lt. Sulu, who navigated the Enterprise through weekly meteor showers, time warps and all sorts of other phenomenon that hampered the ships travel. 

Don Marshall and Gary Conway (photo was prior to his staring in the show when, as an up and coming actor, he posed for the “physical fitness” magazine) were two of the stars of Land of the Giants. It’s the future, 1983, and a spaceship is transporting it’s crew from LA to London (don’t even ask, just go with it) when it is sucked into a time warp and transported to a world where every thing, including the humanoid inhabitants, is 12 times larger than the world the world the crew knew. 

Time Tunnel starred James Darrin and Robert Colbert as scientists working on a top secret 7 billion dollar project. Stay with me on this because it gets weird from here on. Project Tic-Toc is a time traveling machine that appears as a hallway with rotating light circles and it will, theoretically, transport a person through the past and present. This all takes place 800 stories below the Arizona desert. When a Senator threatens to cut funding for Tic-Toc unless the two scientists can prove that it works, Jimmy Darrin throws himself into the time portal. Colbert then throws himself in to save Darrin (how sweet). For the rest of the season, week to week, the tow are trapped inside the Time Tunnel and find themselves transported into various historical events. It was sort of like a live action Mr. Peabody and Sherman. The two find themselves on the Titanic, at the Alamo, In Hawaii on the Day of the Pearl harbor Attack and even hanging with Robin Hood, even though he is a fictional character.  The show was abruptly cancelled after one season, leaving the two boys forever moving through time and space.    

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea was the Star Trek of the ocean. It’s the future, the 1970′s, and a nuclear sub is housed in a secret underwater Batcave style government station. The crew of hot guys pose as marine researchers, but their real mission is to battle alien life forms and monsters under the sea. Again, just go with it.
