Argentina ha pasado durante muchos años por varias dictaduras, pero la última podría considerarse de las más duras. A partir del 24 de marzo de 1976, el país entró en una dictadura militar que arrasó con todo y con todos. “[...] integrados por elementos policiales, civiles y militares que secuestraban y conducían a miles de personas a los centros clandestinos de detención, donde los torturaban, y en la mayoría de los casos, asesinaban.” (Várnagy 2018: 15). El temor creció en las calles, y por lo tanto, los desaparecidos, no era más que un método para que el pueblo estuviera relegado a la ley del dictador, justo como Creonte hizo. En la obra original sofoclea, Creonte manda a Antígona a la cueva después de que ella incumpla la ley, y esto es también una manera de generar temor en las personas para que sean fieles a su decreto. 

Las Madres de la Plaza de Mayo fue un movimiento nacido el 30 de abril de 1977 que se reunían en frente de la Plaza de Mayo en Buenos Aires y se paraban a denunciar las desapariciones y los secuestros ocurridos durante la guerra en la dictadura militar del país. Se considera creadora de este movimiento a Azucena Villaflor De Vicenti, pues fue la que lideró a las madres el día de la primera manifestación. Estas mujeres se levantaron a favor de sus desaparecidos, aún con todo lo que ello conllevaba. Corifeo le dice a Antígona en una parte de la obra “Despreciable es quién tiene en mayor estima a un ser querido que a su propia patria” (Gambaro 1986: 202), algo que seguramente los militantes y los políticos pensaban de las personas que se manifestaban por sus seres queridos. Lo importante era llevar al país a la gloria, daba igual a quién se llevaran por delante para conseguirlo, aunque esto no dió resultado, y Argentina resultó en un país derribado económicamente hasta la actualidad. 

Muchos militares las llamaron locas pero “su locura fue la de exigir la reaparición con vida de los miles de militantes, cuando toda la sociedad sabía que habían sido ejecutados sumariamente, muchos de ellos arrojados en alta mar.” (Amarante y Nabuco 2011: 21) querían una respuesta, y los políticos y militares se reían de ellas. Igual que Antígona, querían dejar a sus muertos sepultados, y no se lo permitieron. En Antígona furiosa, podemos tomarnos a Corifeo como aquellos militares que se reían de las madres de la plaza de Mayo: “Quien es más fuerte manda, ¡esa es la ley!” (Gambaro 1986: 202). Durante toda la obra, Corifeo se ríe de Antígona, se ríe de su idea de amar, de amar siendo mujer, de querer enterrar a su hermano cuando el más fuerte, el rey de Tebas, Creonte, lo ha prohibido.
