summary : melora is the queen consort of a kingdom ruled over by an evil narcissistic king. fed up with the constant abuse and mistreatment, she runs away in the middle of the night and due to being wounded she stops at an abandoned castle in the woods for shelter. the castle is secretly housed by the prince she was once betrothed to and loved and the evil king cursed into becoming a beast.

melora had felt utterly trapped ever since she became the queen consort, her rapidly approaching wedding day looming over her. while marriage was once a concept that excited her, that dream had died when her former betrothed supposedly had. the prince of the neighbouring kingdom had been her best friend since birth, the two rarely ever separated. they fell in love in their teenage years, both of their parents were more than happy to arrange a marriage between them. yet one fateful night, the other disappeared without a trace. she was completely unaware that the man who she would soon be passed off to had a hand in it. he was a feared ruler and narcissistic sorcerer, an equally troubling combination. both made it difficult for her to disobey the other, terrified of what may happen if she were to step out of line. that constant state of walking on eggshells was exhausting, pushing the princess to decide to concoct an escape plan. she refused to marry someone so awful and cruel. with just a bag of precious items that reminded her of home, she managed to sneak off the castle grounds. although the woods that separated the kingdom of idoryn and the kingdom that belonged to her lost love, looked daunting as she stood before them. her trek was slow and steady, her body growing tired after the bitter cold nipped at her cheeks. she had been out there for hours, unaware of the effect it would have on her body. she was growing a bit dizzy and ended up tripping, falling into a patch of thickets and cutting her leg open. it wasn’t a deep gash, but the blood loss only made her feel all the dizzier. she managed to limp forward until she found a sight that caused her to breathe a sigh of relief. a castle in the middle of the woods — how peculiar. but, she wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth. she was thankful to find that the door was open, slowly slipping into the dimly lit spacious foyer. “hello?” she called out. “i’m sorry for intruding, but the door was open.”

ohhhh if i could draw right now i would draw this oc ive been thinking about

basically hes a "villain"/vigilante/anti-hero type, with gravity/space powers. his supervillain costume is so eccentric and he poses and talks like hes a disney villain (i was about to say queer-coded but he is. very queer. trans even)

his supervillain name is Villace (vill-ace) (basically just villain and space mashed together) and his civilian name is undecided... ive just been calling him "Villace (Civilian)" in my head

but basically his civilian form is very laid-back and tired while his supervillain form is very. Not. when hes Villace, his hair goes from shoulder length to basically a floating galaxy mess of black/purple hair with stars and colors and all that. his right eye turns into a full on star (kinda like an eyepatch? but he can still see fully) and his left eye's pupil just turns into a star-shape. also his irises turn deep purple/blue, with his skin going a pale greenish-blue. besides his hair, nothing really... changes? like his face doesnt change appearance, just color.

he basically just jaunts around the city, making sure corrupt companies are brought to justice and such.

but uhm. well, we have another super. a superHERO

superhero has fire and lava and such on his side, but he mostly focuses on fire, since its the one hes best at and has most control over. his superhero name is Volycan (voh-lie-can), and his superhero suit is... very flame-themed, except his suit is more neat and skin-tight than Villace's many big shapes and baggy clothes.

they fight, its fun, its cool. in Villace's civilian life, he works minimum wage as a fast food cashier. in Volycan's civilian life, he's the top employee at a big business company that may or may not know hes Volycan, and give him raises based on how good he 'saves' the city.

so yeah. very different lifestyles.

Owned?: Yes Page count: 375 My summary: Ten years have passed. The Cardinal, Capac Raimi, is struggling to keep control of the City. Al Jeery stalks the streets, slaughtering the guilty in the guise of his dead father. But something is drawing them together. The Ayuamarcans are returning. And there will be hell to pay. My rating: 2.5/5 My commentary:

I’m back, with the last one of this series! I’ve been growing steadily less interested in this series as I progress - I used to love the first book when it was the only one I actually owned of them, but now? Eh. It’s fine. Definitely not Shan’s best work; I’m not sure he’s entirely suited to writing for adults? Perhaps that’s my bias talking. Anyway, let’s finish this.

Al is once again our viewpoint character - Capac narrates the first couple of chapters before going missing, and Al takes up the rest of it. He’s living a double life as Al and Pacuar Wami, without much of an individual identity for himself. Which is a fine setup, but I didn’t really get much of a sense of him growing or developing or changing throughout the novel? Capac’s even worse, he’s a horrible, paranoid man who goes through some shit and comes out even worse.

The mysteries presented through the series are fully revealed here - who the villacs are, their goal, their motivations - and it turns out they wanna...make a gang, and control the city. There’s some magic in there, but that’s basically the goal. It’s a very mundane ambition, and sure I’m being a bit reductive here, but I was somewhat disappointed. And, yet again, I take issue with using Incan aesthetics (not sure much actual Incan mythology came into it) for your bad guys, especially as a white author. Ooh, they’re scary because blood sacrifices and stuff. Inspired, Shan.

What else? The side characters were largely uninteresting to me. Once again, women are objects - Ama Situwa comes back and most of her role is having sex and being murdered. The war and strife that envelops the city is largely uninteresting - we have this mystical setup and yet the climax is essentially a three-way gang war. And it’s edgy. Ooh, rape and murder and cannibalism! It all feels a bit gratuitous, which, to be fair, is a Darren Shan hallmark.

Finally, the climax of the whole thing just feels really rushed. The plot meanders through the middle, setting up the mysteries and intruige that the former books had, but in this case it just sort of peters out. Al and his entourage win the day, but like...they’re not good people, and I’ve pretty much lost all sympathy for them at this point. Yay, victory? I just...don’t care about it, is the problem here.

Elaborado com iguais proporções de Touriga Nacional, Aragonez, Syrah e Alicante Bouschet colhidas manualmente e fermentadas individualmente em tanques de inox. Depois, 20% do vinho envelhece em barricas de carvalho francês por alguns meses. . Na taça tinha cor rubi intensa. Aromas de fruta negras maduras, floral, um leve herbáceo e algumas especiarias. Depois de um tempo na taça surgiu um discreto tostado. Na boca tinha apenas fruta e leve dulçor residual, com curta persistência. Corpo médio, acidez moderada e taninos leves e macios. .
