Historical and Cultural Events of Virgin Gorda in the Virgin Islands

Here's a little history on the Virgin Gorda, it is part of a chain of islands known as the Virgin Islands in the carribean. The Virgin Islands consist of 4 main Islands and 32 smaller islets, 20 of which are uninhabited. The 4 main islands include Tortola, Anegada, Virgin Gorda, and Jost Van Dyke, the Virgin Gorda being the third largest and second most populated. (Source 3) 

Before any european visitors came to the Virgin Gorda, the island was inhabited by the Ciboney, Arawak, and Carib Indians. Christopher Columbus was the first European to Visit the islands, but he and his men did not settle here and the islands would be settled on later in history but some very unexpected guests. Can you Guess who? That's right Pirates! Pirates like Bluebeard and Captain Kidd used the island's coastline to ambush incoming spanish ships and eventually started colonizing the Virgin Gorda. (Source 4)

The British finally took over the Virgin Gorda and her sister islands in the 1670s starting the sugar cane industry which allowed the population to grow drastically with the help of slavery. (Source 1) At this time the economy of the Virgin Gorda was based on the sugar cane plantations and slavery, so when slavery was abolished in 1838, the island suffered greatly. (Source 2)

 By this time more than a hundred copper mines had been established thanks to the island's rich mineral deposit, but as soon as the mines closed the economy was in shackles again. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the economy could start to recover a little thanks to its beaches and historic spanish towns attracting people from all over. The old copper mines are now listed as a national park with the complete restoration of the historical parts such as the old mine shafts, engine house, and buildings that housed many of those who worked in the mine. Today people love to visit the Virgin Gorda mainly for the beaches and for sailing as well as to visit and get a taste for the historic elements of the island like the old spanish towns or the old mines that once had such a large influence on the economy.
