Tasty as a Case Study - Video on Facebook or Facebook Video
As a child, whenever I wanted custard, my mom took out her tattered notebook with the recipe and started from scratch. It never came from a box. I don’t have the time, inclination or patience to do this.
The sales of Blue Apron and frozen, canned and ready-to-eat food tell me that I am not alone in my antagonism towards laborious cooking. I am, however, moderately health-conscious and would prefer not to hand over my entire pay-check to restaurants.
My friend shared one of Tasty’s recipes with me last year with the following words – “Even YOU could make these”. Insulting, but terribly true! Then, I started noticing that my Timeline was frequented and regularly revisited by Tasty videos.
I could leave it at that, tell you that I cooked often and ate more than a banana for dinner. However, for this assignment (remember the URL), I am required to look deeper. Two things of note - despite some negative comments, the number of shares and likes keep increasing and most recipes, when executed with some integrity to the instructions, are palatable.
My theory is that Tasty, apart from being the first to have a Facebook recipe video channel, figured out the difference between video content on Facebook and Facebook Video Content. I believe that while the former repurposes traditional video content, the latter creates video content specifically for Facebook consumption.
For starters, it is on Facebook; therefore, I don’t need a separate application to find these. Secondly, the recipe is written into the video, and I don’t need to go elsewhere for a list of ingredients. The videos are short (remember data usage limits), and do not require high attention levels to comprehend.
My favorite part about these videos is the fact that there is nobody sitting on a high horse, telling me to steal tomatoes from my neighbor’s garden and hand-mush (yes, that is what I call it!) them to get flavor. They tell me that a bottle of tomato sauce will suffice and I agree.
Apart from the fact that it is good content (relatable) and it is fulfilling a need, it is packaged in a way that is easy to consume and caters to the target it serves. Giving credit where credit is due, I did not realize that Tasty was as large a phenomenon until I read this article (Link Here), but I understand why it might be.
