Was reading through a lot of “is this fake” posts on another forum re. minerals and imported crystal, and while yes folks can lab-grow some really amazing crystal forms from basic quartz on up to victoriastone (and that’s not talking about the massive overlap between study and replication of mineral formation and ceramic glazing,) the problem isn’t that lab-created or lab-modified crystals are somehow “fake,” it’s that too often that source isn’t openly disclosed. 

There’s no problem at all with buying quartz that’s been altered to citrine. No problem buying lab-made garden quartz towers or ‘aura quartz’ if that’s your aesthetic, or any number of other bright flashy lab-made, dyed, altered, glued-down and sculpted minerals and gemstones. 

But if the seller isn’t disclosing it, or if they’re claiming something like aura quartz is “100% natural,” that’s a problem. Many mineral importers, including a bunch I follow online and have visited in real life, buy bulk flats of colorful stuff from international vendors. They have a trade name, a vague idea of where in the world it may be from, and no clue at all if it’s altered, synthetic or re-shaped. If you’re buying for the aesthetic and don’t mind not knowing provenance or conditions under which it was mined or created, then go for it. But if you’re looking for specific stones or minerals formed under only natural conditions with a proven provenance, good luck, and also don’t buy it off etsy or ebay. 

While it doesn’t matter a ton if the pretty iridescent crystal cluster on your bookshelf has a metallic coating or glued base, it really matters when folks go to test minerals for precise identification, trim or alter the mineral base, or wonder why their specimen changed color, gassed off plastic residue, melted in the sun, started to stink like rancid oil or released harmful solvent fumes!
