Finding Your Place, pt. 1

The skylights let the mid-morning sun flood the WVBA Academy Gym. It was a typical Wednesday. Von Kaiser’s intermediate class was working in a couple of the rings under his stern and watchful gaze. 

Glass Joe and Disco Kid were sparring in another ring, Joe helping Disco on his form while Disco worked with Joe on reading his opponents quicker. 

And the loud thumps coming from heavy bags was King Hippo as he was getting ready for his title defense against Piston Hondo that was coming up.

But, no doubt the loudest and most attention drawing workout in the room was Luna Doll. She was in her element. Working the double-ended bag, she was dancing around, light on her feet, punching and dodging. Honing her skills, getting ready for her fight with Razor Sharp next week, wasn’t what attracted attention, though. No, that had more to do with her phone mounted on a nearby tripod.

“Now, Luna-tics, you know I ain’t sleepin’ on Baby Sands.” Luna was bobbing and weaving, the bluetooth mic clipped to her pink sports bra catching her every word. She was live streaming her workout, punching with precision, moving with grace, and talking with sass.

Her fans, her Luna-tics, were out in full force in the chat. Of course, she couldn’t see the chat while she was working the bag. But, she knew they were there, hanging on her every word, cheering her on as she trained for her biggest fight to date.

Luna snapped out a sharp jab, then slipped the bag when it sprang back at her, “Razor Sharp’s got that Sandman blood in her. Her old man’s a legend, Mister Sandman himself. That don’t mean she gets a pass, though.” A quick one-two shot the bag back and she danced to the right, popping off another jab, “Nah, fam! Just means she gets the whole #Hitmaker experience!”

They were brash words, but Luna couldn’t help herself. There was just something about talking trash during a stream and during a workout that got her amped, especially when she knew her fans were eating it up. Gliding back, Luna effortlessly slipped the bag as it rebounded, catching it with a clean right hook as she did.

“See that? See that?” Luna bobbed and weaved, then popped off a series of jabs as she danced around the bag, each one landing with a quick pop. “Lunatics, I’m stoked for this! No doubt, Baby Sands has got the size and the power and the experience, so we gonna lose some HP on this one.”

From the corner of her eye, Luna caught the gym doors opening. Niki Binary, decked out in a WVBA polo shirt and black slacks, lanyard around her neck, had walked in, scanning the gym with a purposeful gaze. Clearly, she was looking for someone.

Luna’s grin widened. “But, you know me, stay ready ain’t gotta get ready.” Popping off a few punches, slipping and dodging, Luna then caught the bag with her gloves and brought it to a stop before looking into the camera lens on her phone.

“No disrespect, Razor. I ain’t expecting to speedrun you or nothin’.” Luna pulled one of her gloves off, “But, you best not expect a ‘Flawless Victory’, either. I’m watchin’ your fights, workin’ hard, and come fight night, I’mma read like an old school strat guide. Straight GameFAQ’s, bay-bee!”

Niki was now standing behind the phone, trying not to laugh. Luna tossed her a wink as she finished up, “Alright, fam, I’ve got to go. Remember to like, share, subscribe, all that cool stuff. With a quick tap on her phone screen, Luna turned off the stream and turned her attention to Niki, her demeanor shifting from dynamic streamer to, somewhat, humble rookie boxer.

“Yo, Binary,” Luna smiled, then quickly corrected herself when Niki tapped her badge on her lanyard, “Sorry, sorry. Yo Nicole, what’s up? Forgot, Niki in the ring, Nicole on the clock. Sorry.”

“No worries,” Nicole smiled as Luna pulled off her other glove and started breaking down her streaming set-up. “Streaming your training, I see. Between the sneak preview you're giving away and the mad trash you’re dishing out, I think you might have a rough night with Razor.”

Luna looked up as she collapsed her tripod, “Oh, I’m counting on it. Look, Razor can get film on me as easy as I can on her. Plus, we both train here. Not worried about the preview.” Standing up, Luna stuffed the tripod in its bag, “Now, me puttin’ the mouth on her? Yeah, I thought about that. I figure she’s gonna try and knock my head off either way, so I might as well be entertaining.”

“Guess that’s one way to think about it,” Nicole just shook her head in disbelief. “Have you always streamed your training?”

“Oh yeah,” Luna's face lit up as she talked about her streams. “From when I was getting set for my first influencer fight. My first punch, my first spar, all of it. And every time I struggled, every time I broke down and cried, my viewers were there for me. They’ve had my six the whole time. They’re my ride or die. Keeps me motivated, and maybe I motivate them a little. I like to think I do anyways.”

Nicole smiled and nodded as a single word crossed her mind. Sessatakuma. She understood Luna’s feelings all too well.

Luna finished zipping her bag, “But, I know you didn’t come here just to watch me stream live and in person. What’s up? Here for me?”

“Yeah,” Nicole pulled out her work phone. “Just needed to follow-up on the work we did to your apartment wi-fi. How’s it looking now? No dropped frames?”

“Not. A. One!” Luna’s eyes shined with excitement. “No lags. No drops. Just pure, uninterrupted gaming. Tried it out last night on an old school Contra stream. Crushed it, b-t-dubs! You’re a lifesaver, Nicole.”

“Just doing my job,” Nicole tapped away at her phone, a look of professional pride on her face. “Let me just close this ticket out and…”

“Entschuldigung.” A deep voice spoke with gentle authority, interrupting the two boxers.

Slightly startled, both turned to see Coach Von Kaiser approaching, a light sweat built up from teaching his intermediate class. His German accent was unmistakable. “My apologies if I am interrupting, ladies.”

At that moment, it became apparent Luna was a little starstruck. “I, um, I don’t think we’ve been introduced properly.” Extending her hand, Luna bowed slightly, “Jia Park. I box under my screen name, Luna Doll. It’s an honor, sir.”

“Please, fräulein,” Von Kaiser returned the gesture as he shook her hand, “there is no need to be so formal. I’m simply a coach.”

Luna’s face shot up in disbelief, her voice louder than she intended. “Simply a coach?! You’re Viktor Von FREAKIN’ Kaiser! The German Steel Machine! Three-time Minor Circuit Champ! I’ve studied your title match trilogy with Piston Hurricane and, dude, epic is, like, too small a word.”

Nicole stood by, fighting back a laugh. She understood Luna’s fangirling entirely, but she also knew how uncomfortable it made her coach, especially with eyes from all over the gym, most of them agreeing with Luna, suddenly on him. Still, every once and a while, it was good for her mentor to get his flowers.

Before Von Kaiser could get any more embarrassed, Nicole finally saved him. “So, Coach, what can we help you with?”

“Ja… yes… um,” Von Kaiser quickly tried to gather his thoughts. “Wenig Stahl, I’ll be heading back to Munich for a few days, perhaps a week. I have business at the gym to address.”

“But,” Nicole looked confused for a moment, “I thought Vicky was holding things down while you were here.”

Luna, trying not to eavesdrop, finished packing her gear as Von Kaiser responded. “True, but Viktoria just turned 28 and she is eager to resume her in-ring career. She has a candidate to run the gym day-to-day and would like me to speak with him.”

“Seems fair,” Nicole nodded. “It’s exciting that Vicky’s looking to get back in the ring. She’s a beast! Can’t wait to see her pick up where she left off.”

“Actually,” Von Kaiser scratched his head for a moment, “I was hoping you would join me on the trip. I think a change of scenery and an opportunity to train with new people would be very good for you. And Viktoria would not forgive me if I didn’t ask.”

Nicole’s eyes went wide and her hands shot to her mouth to stifle a squeal. “You want me to go with you, to the Steel Heart Academy, to train. Seriously? Like, you’re serious right now?”

Coach Von Kaiser’s expression hardened slightly, “Ja. When have you known me to not be serious?”

“HA!”

Von Kaiser and Nicole both shot their gazes down at Luna.

“Sorry…” Luna’s gaze went down and she slowly zipped her bag.

“Okay, um,” Nicole’s mind was racing. “Yeah, of course! When do we leave?”

“Gut!” Von Kaiser clapped his hands together, “We leave tomorrow evening. I’ll meet you in the front lobby at 6 and we’ll head to the airport.”

Nicole nodded as she started tapping away on her phone, “Sounds good! I’ll get things straight with my boss in I.T. and see about using some of my vacation time.”

With a fatherly pat on the shoulder, Von Kaiser went back to his class. While Nicole swiped from one app to another, Luna shot back to a standing position, “Girl, you are getting to train at Steel Heart in Munich? With Viktoria Von Kaiser? As in the former Women’s European Super Lightweight Champ? I’m so jealous!”

“I know, right?” Nicole was almost trembling with excitement, “Vicky’s like a big sister to me. She helped me so much when I started taking boxing lessons from her dad. But, I’ve never been to their gym. This is… man! Look, I’ve gotta get to I.T. and make sure Eddie is good with me taking a week off.”

Nicole started out of the gym, turning and walking backwards, “Let me know if you have any more trouble with the wi-fi!”

“You got it, girl! Have fun! Be safe!” Luna shouted after her as Nicole made her way out of the gym. Luna tossed her bag over her shoulder, her own thoughts racing now. Man, it would be so rude. But, I might never…

With that, Luna took out her phone, tapping out a quick text. After all, she had to try.

Doesn't mind them much but gets nervous at very big ones, loves the sounds the small sparkler like ones make though.

Glass Joe

Is used to the noise (being from a Popular city can do that) and loves the colors, a simple man.

Von Kaiser

Has to wear earphones during them, to loud for him.

Probably actually hates them in general to be honest.

Disco Kid

Loves everything second of a firework show due to the colors, loves the ending. Is sad when they end.

King Hippo

At first panic's because of the loud noise, then calms down after abit and watches. Eventually gets board though.

Piston Hondo

Anticipates what kind of fire work would be set off next. Most times he's off.

Bear Hugger

Focuses on making sure the animals are alright then the fireworks. He's an animal lover who worries about the noise and lights.

Great Tiger

Has his clones get snacks while he watches them.

Probably actually uses fireworks during magic acts.

Don Flamenco

Uses them as metaphors for carmen. Wishes some of fireworks were flowers just so he can give them to her.

Aran Ryan

This guy is lighting up some firework he got from masked muscle while the actual show is going on to be honest.

He's banned from stores as long as fireworks are on sale.

Soda Popinski

Probably got distracted by the fireworks first going off and nobody explained to him what a firework show was till it ended. They once left him at a place.

Bald Bull

Flash sensitive, has to wear sunglasses or else he'll be upset. Has tried to work around it though.

Super Macho Man

Has someone taking pictures of him posing while the fireworks go off. They always come out horrible because of the flash.

Mr. Sandman

Would honestly like to be asleep rather then watch them, although admittedly they are cool to him.

The ohio spark/clara

She's from the country part of ohio, nothing about fireworks scares her. Probably comforts the ones who do have issues with them though.

Detirmed Delilah

Unlike glass joe, Delilah does have an issue with the noises. And is often grabbing onto someone for reassurance after every bang.

Vicky Kaiser

LOVES the loud noises and lights, records the show so she can show von Kaiser after wards (she bought an expensive camera for this kind of stuff)

Dancing boxer/ deedee

She's from texas, also used to the noise. However immediately goes to comfort someone as soon as they start displaying nervousness about them.

Manatee

Similar to king hippo, she gets scared, however once she sees them she understands and watches all the way through, nobody knows why.

Hurricane cherry /Sarasa

Makes snacks and drinks for everyone before the show, other wise is also playing the guessing game with hondo

Gamer zoid

Get's very excited over them, it's like a victory screen for her. Ironically she is Canadian so it's hilarious when she says that.

Magnificent Lion/ Chanda

More hesitant to watch, still does but often leaves before the final.

Carmen flamenco

Loves hearing don's metaphors about the fireworks. Tries to keep a mental picture of each one in her head for later, perhaps she'll make a fake flower about it.

Ardin ryan

"aran don't light that!-" *kaboom* "aaand the feckin' eejit did."

Keeps a very very close eye on aran. Actually once had to kick one away after he decided to look at it directly above.

Other wise she doesn't mind

The caffinator/caff

Has to have headphones on, too loud for the over caffeinated gal. Loves the colors though

Turkey's vulture/ raven

Is typically the one unintentionally distracting the worried while looking at the fireworks. Ironically it's by giving reasons as to what the fireworks mean and do.

Super sexy lady/ Amelia

Doing the exact same thing as super macho man. The others just ignore them both.

dream lander

Making absolutely sure nobody is about to go crazy, has a backup plan for everyone including herself.

Otherwise? She wants to go to bed too.

Hey! What do you think of Wilhelm's relationship with his first wife, Dona?

Hey! Well, I remember reading in Hanna Pakula’s book that in Wilhelm’s autobiography there is a chapter called “Marriage and Friendship” where he dedicated two pages to his wife and eleven and half pages to his friends. I think you get the picture.

To be honest, I’m far from being the most unbiased person when it’s about Wilhelm and Dona, since I have little sympathy for both of them. On top of that, I’m a hardcore fan of his parents, Fritz and Vicky, so again I’m not the fairest when it comes to Wilhelm (even though I can admit that both his parents played a part in the formation of his fuck up personnality). Aaand don’t get me started on Dona, ugh.

I also know that I lack knowledge concerning Wilhelm’s life as I’m not very interested in the dude (except when it comes to his relationship with his family). He was a very complex person, even his father said “Wilhelm is & always be a riddle to me.”

Now that being said, I don’t like the dynamic of their marriage. In my opinion they had a very unequal relationship. Wilhelm found in Dona someone who could boost his ego. She ticked off every box of the perfect model of German womanhood : she gave birth to six sons which made Wilhelm very proud, she was obedient, was very much in synch with whatever opinions Wilhelm had, very religious (too much!!!), and she remained loyal to her husband throughout her life. Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone who was cousin with Wilhelm wrote in her memoire : “Dona had dedicated her whole life to William, who, like the average husband, took advantage of her devotion. She became a thoroughly downtrodden wife.“

It is not very suprising that Wilhelm married Dona, who is the ANTITHESIS of his mother. Vicky was a very strong-willed and intellectual woman, with sometimes a sharp tongue especially towards Wilhelm. With Dona, he was married to a loving companion, utterly devoted to him. I think she was content with this role. Dona wasn’t particularly bright, she was very conservative and narrow-minded. However, she was a great support to Wilhelm. Bernhard von Bülow said : “She sustained the Kaiser, she gave courage to one who so easily swung back and forth between hope and fear”. To be honest it was a double-edged sword : Wilhelm craved this kind of adulation his whole life and Dona fed his ego which didn’t help him to get his shit together. Now, this wasn’t entirely her fault, he was a grown man with his own baggage and it wasn’t her role to “heal” him. But let’s say that Wilhelm’s wife could have had a kind of “smooth the rough edges off” effect. Which wasn’t the case AT ALL, on the contrary, and the family feuds can attest of that.

In his memoir Bernhard von Bülow continue : “He loved her, to be sure only within the limits of his naive self-absorption. He recognized and appreciated her devotion. But, in comparison to his mother, she seemed to him a petty-princess “One can always tell,” he remarked to me on more than one occasion, “that she was not brought up in Windsor but rather in Primkenau.” Ouch.

Wilhelm was also very often away from home and wholeheartedly devoted his time to the army. He seems to have had multiple affairs and some historians even said that he might have been homosexual, even though we don’t have any evidence.

Anyway, we are far from the kind of marriage his mother and father had, which was based on a real partnership where each person’s interests and desires were respected. (even though one could argue that Vicky was the strong figure in the marriage)

So yeah, I’m not particularly in awe of Wilhelm and Dona’s relationship it was, for lack of a better word, dull.

Zwei Drag-Queens des legendären Schwulen-Clubs „Exile“ an der Schaafenstraße sind in der Nacht von Freitag auf Samstag Ziel von Angriffen auf offener Straße geworden. Einer der beiden Männer liegt mit Kopfverletzungen im Krankenhaus.

Drag-Queen David (Künstlername: Pam Pengco) schildert gegenüber EXPRESS die bestürzenden Taten. Nach der Arbeit im „Exile“, wo er und sein Freund (beide 29) als Drag-Queens die Gäste unterhalten hatten, waren sie auf dem Nachhauseweg am Rudolfplatz  – in ziviler Kleidung – auf eine fünf- bis sechsköpfige Gruppe junger Männer getroffen.

Die Männer hätten auf den Terrassen-Tischen des McDonald’s gesessen und schwulenfeindliche Sprüche von sich gelassen, nachdem sie sich von einem weiteren Freund, der nach Kalk musste, mit Küsschen verabschiedet hatten.

Sein Freund Frank habe die Männer aufgefordert, die Beleidigungen zu unterlassen. Daraufhin sei er mit einem Getränk übergossen worden.

David erzählt, wie er dann selbst attackiert wurde: „Ich bekam einen Schlag ins Gesicht. Ich schrie dann um Hilfe, rief auch die Polizei. Die Täter flohen in Richtung Neumarkt. Nach 15 Minuten war die Polizei da. Ich habe eine Strafanzeige wegen Körperverletzung gestellt, Frank eine wegen Beleidigung.“

Die Kölner Polizei bestätigt den Vorgang. Protokollierte Tatzeit: 4.58 Uhr.

Die nächste Attacke: Tatort Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring

Geschockt von dem Vorfall, aber sich Mut machend, stiegen die beiden Männer am Rudolfplatz in die U-Bahn. Am Bahnsteig sei wieder jemand mit schwulenfeindlichen Sprüchen aufgefallen, aber da sei zunächst nichts weiter passiert.

Beide wohnen in der Nähe vom Mediapark und stiegen an der Haltestelle Christophstraße aus. Dort trennten sich die Wege zunächst, weil die Freunde und Kollegen in entgegengesetzter Richtung wohnen.

Täter wollte Geld und schlug dann zu

Unfassbar: Am Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring wurde dann Frank Opfer eines versuchten Raubes. Der Täter  forderte Geld, schlug Frank nieder und trat ihm gegen den Kopf.

Er erlitt Verletzungen am Gesicht und eine Gehirnerschütterung. Augenzeugen waren eingeschritten, der Täter wurde gefasst.

Hi! What was the Kotze Affair? All I can find on it is that it was letters (which may have actually been diary entries from Charlotte of Prussia's diary??) that exposed the German court of 'sexual debauchery'. I haven't been able to find really any info on it. Is there anywhere I could read the letters?

Hey! The Kotze Affair began in 1892. Members of the Hohenzollern family and several prominent figures of the German Court started receiving anonymous letters containing obscene accusations. Until 1894, more or less 200 letters were sent. The rivalries at Court were exacerbated by these letters which were most likely written by someone close to the recipients since the details were so accurate & it created a climate of suspicion.

Leberetch von Kotze, master of ceremonies at Court, was getting closer to the inner circle of Wilhelm II, which made many at Court jealous. Even though he had received some letters, he was accused of being the author. The authorities with the Baron Schrader (who didn’t like Kotze at all) found some so-called evidences and Kotze was put in jail. However, the letters didn’t stop. An expert was called to analyse the handwriting and he concluded that Kotze wasn’t the author and that the latter could be a woman. Kotze was set free but the intrigues at Court were still in full swing. Kotze’s clan blamed Schrader for fabricating evidences. Later, the two men fought in a duel and Schrader died from his wound.

At that time, Ernst Gunther, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein, brother-in-law of Wilhelm II, was also mentionned as being the real author behind the letters. He was forbidden to live in Berlin and Postdam which give credence to the accusations. For Fritz Friedmann, who worked on the case and wrote a book on the affair in 1896, the author was a woman. He doesn’t blame Charlotte but it’s true that some contemporaries thought she was the one behind the letters. Mainly because of her ill reputation. And even though Charlotte was quite a piece of work, I’m not sure she was the master mind behind the letters. +  she was one of the recipients of these letters.

Concerning Charlotte diary, newspapers reported (even French press, it shows the extent of the scandal) that she had lost it and the diary had ended up in the wrong hands. Some said it was Kotze and his wife who had stolen the diary while on a travel with Charlotte and her husband. Let’s say that there were a lot of rumours…

Historians can’t seem to agree on the author and it’s true that not a lot of materials have been written on this affair, at least in English. Maybe I’m wrong, it’s been a long time since I read it, but Christina Croft doesn’t mention the affair in her book Queen Victoria’s Granddaughters: 1860-1918. Hannah Pakula in her bio on Vicky talks about it  but doesn’t mention Charlotte. Whereas Wolfgang Wippermann (who has published a book with the letters if you read German!) thinks Charlotte is behind them. And for John C. G. Röhl it is most likely Ernst Gunther. I recommend you the books from Röhl there are great.
