Soft Carbon Pencils
Tumblr media
Pros:
The carbon is strong and the black can go down nice and dark. They are soft like using regular charcoal but with charcoal you then need a blender if you want a smooth finish, with these you can add water instead and head into watercolour territory. I used a water filled brush pen though any paintbrush and a pot of water would work. I also found that you could get a nice range of values by varying how much water was added. It was nice tho to keep some of the texture of charcoal on cold press paper, but still be able to easily get smooth solid darks.
Cons:
I needed to use taped down heavy watercolour paper because if I had added that much water to my sketch paper it would be a wrinkly mess. If you are not used to watercolours (which I’m not) manipulating how much water to add for different values can be a bit tricky. Although the carbon does blend fairly well and you can add more on top once it’s dry. You will also probably make a mess 😂 (but hey that’s to be expected if we are playing with carbon/charcoal products 🤷🏻‍♂️😄)
My verdict:
If you like charcoal and you like watercolours, it’s a great one to try.
The ones I used were from Amazon. £13 for 6 pencils.

Sam Winchester - drawn with soft carbon water soluble pencils
Progress pics under cut
I started with a sketch in the soft carbon pencil on cold press heavy watercolour paper.
Tumblr media
Next added some areas of depth
Tumblr media
Then using a brush pen I added water. (This is my first time trying these and I had no idea what I was doing 😂😁 the carbon is super pigmented so was great for dark areas but I didn’t find it so easy to do lighter shadows)
Tumblr media
So I used the water to put in my darkest shadows
Tumblr media
Then on top I used a combination of the black carbon pencil and a white colour pencil to refine the details.
Tumblr media
And this is the final result. I like it 😄 it seems ‘Artier’ than my normal style 😂🤷🏻‍♂️😁. Whole process took about 2 hrs.

Flower picking. Working with ArtGraf tailor shape pigment blocks again. This time I chose dark brown, which reminds me of my favorite kind of chocolate. #flowers #viarco #artgraf https://www.instagram.com/p/CM3G1QWFm3b/?igshid=12rfes2gf4mp8

[English below] Adoro testar novos materiais. Ontem usei pela primeira vez a aquarela de grafite e a barra de grafite que trouxe da minha última viagem a Portugal. Adorei o efeito! Completei com acrílica bem diluída e marcadores de tinta acrílica. [Português acima] I love testing new materials.

How do you get inspiration? What media do you use? Why does your stuff always look good or have a meaning???
oh these are great questions!! i'll try to answer 'em all
inspiration - i'm a huge sci-fi and horror fan, also an amateur old time radio historian (radio has vast potential for creepery), and i'm really into old pulp serials and EC horror comics like Creepy/Eerie/Crime SuspenStories, Vault of Horror, Tales from the Crypt etc. i also like ARG/suspension of disbelief/found footage stuff and cosmic horror/weird fiction. survival horror games are big fun. zdzislaw beksinski, emil melmoth and berlinde de bruyckere are my favorite fine artists. the short answer is horror/dark sci-fi/dystopian stuff in general, but i'm not capable of short answers hoo hoo hoo. if it's unsettling i'm probably like 👍. i'm also a big fan of classic animation and i like the idea of an alive cartoon man who uses cartoon logic as a springboard for horror
media - what i don't use might actually be a shorter list! i don't do much digital art because i don't have the equipment for it, most of my stuff is real media that's slightly manipulated. i like brush and ink (kuretake zig is my favorite, also pentel's Japan division makes rad brush pens) and pens like marvy uchida and tombow. i have a big bag of different pens, if i see art pens i nab a few to try out. acrylic paint and water soluble graphite (viarco artgraf) are also a lot of fun, and a lot of the stuff i've made lately is just crayola kiddie markers on crappy little newsprint pads and such. i also sew, sculpt, and mold/cast resin, but i haven't had as much energy or space for that lately due to life stuff. it's not tagged all that well because i'm a dork who doesn't know how to internet
good/meaning - i don't always think it's good but thank you! 😂 ♥️ it has meaning largely because the character himself has meaning for me, so i'm always happy when that telegraphs!
