One consequence of having seven billion people on an increasingly interconnected planet is that everything is becoming an attention game. @argumate​ has been talking recently about how bad a life decision becoming an indie game dev is, because the market is flooded with indie games and even brilliant entries in a given genre don’t stand out anymore. Everybody who’s ever a guest on a podcast I listen to ends up plugging a book or a project they’re working on. And when people make a witty tweet that gets lots of retweets, inevitably they follow it up with a “hey if you liked this check out my book/blog/side hustle” etc.

Maybe this is just the side effect of the current economic trend of a downwardly mobile middle class in a knowledge economy, but I suspect it’s something longer-lasting, the side effect of a mass media that has become so mass in its audience and so cheap to distribute that almost every form of it has essentially zero value now. We have achieved or are close to achieving a true post-scarcity environment in games, news, blog posts, novels, short fiction, music, visual art--in almost everything except, like, film (and the entire rest of the economy). This would be great, except people still need to pay their bills even if their real gifts and inclination lie in the arts or the media, and with billions of people on the planet connected dirt-cheap via a torrent of information you can hold inches from your face every waking hour of the day, it makes it real hard to make a living if your chosen economic output is post-scarcity, but food, housing, and healthcare are not.

This need not be dystopian. Technophobes and luddites might whine about nobody going outside anymore and just enjoying the sunshine, and you see smarmy signs at hipster cafes like “no wifi, talk to each other”--as if that’s not what we’re doing on twitter and tumblr and reddit, and frankly the people I interact online are way more interesting than you mr. cafe owner--but I do, truly, honestly think that the majority of the impact of this new technology has been positive. The downsides are the same as the downsides of traditional mass media--hate groups and racists and demagogues and genocidaires can communicate more effectively, too, which as far as downsides go is fucking terrible. But hopefully as we better understand the kind of society we’re creating, we’ll get better at holding the assholes of the world in check. I’m optimistic on that front.

And I’m optimistic that the creation of the kind of world I want to live in--one suffused with all manner of artistic beauty, easy communication between far-flung people, and mutual understanding between people of very different backgrounds--is more aided than hindered by this kind of technology. But right now we’re trapped in a really awkward place, a place where the people who want to inject beauty into the world (or knowledge, or wisdom, or anything else whose cost to create and transmit is reduced nearly to zero by these new technologies) suddenly find that there are zero dollars to be had in their chosen profession. Writer, artist, university professor, musician? All these things pay like dirt and will continue to do so as the population becomes more educated and connected and the number of people capable of doing these things increases.

My worry is that we have a model, now, of what happens as a post-scarcity regime envelops one part of the economy, and the lessons we learn may translate to other parts of the economy when and if (big if) the same thing happens there. In the areas of film and software, by comparison, real abundance in reproducibility (although not original production) is hidden by artificially-enforced scarcity (think regional copyright regimes, DRM, the concept of intellectual property metastasizing into a way to carve out permanent abstract fiefdoms via licensing and subscription services--imagine, if you please, if there was no such thing as software patents and all software was public domain after a 20-year copyright term, renewable once at most); in many creative fields, selfless producers are basically sharing the bounty of their until it reduces them all to penury. At no point has anyone said “look, media is very nearly free to reproduce and distribute now; old models of law and property are incoherent here, and we risk strangling creativity and innovation if we insist on kludging together a system that lets the winners of the previous system maintain their advantage indefinitely.” Or, if they have, they’ve basically been regarded as the equivalent of free software anoraks, utopians who must be ignored by hard-headed realists.

So we have a situation where either 1) nobody can make a living in a profession, or 2) they can make a living because artificial scarcity is imposed to make what should be an abundant good rare. There have been some faltering attempts to introduce regimes like (2) in other areas of the economy, hindered only by the fact we’re a long way off from true post-scarcity in them, like patenting the genome of more abundant strains of crops, but my worry is that just as we accept the current system in media as “normal,” as a natural consequence of how the pre-scarcity system transitioned to the post-scarcity one (even though it didn’t have to be like this!), we’ll accept a similarly recalcitrant transition to post-scarcity if and when it includes greater abundance of other goods, like food and pharmaceuticals and consumer goods. And, as a result, we’ll be living in a society in a few hundred years with the productivity and abundance of Star Trek, but the material inequality of the Middle Ages. And given that the future is long, and the limit on human dickishness very high indeed, in my more cynical moods I imagine we will invent strong AI, it will promptly be declared the property of some corporation, and it will be put to work maximizing their stock price--and anyone who tries to build their own will get arrested or sued into destitution for violating their patent. Incidentally, this is why I don’t trust Google, and why I’m mildly horrified that there exist at least some people who seem to like the idea of powerful megacorps--because the incentive for big firms is always going to be orthogonal to the goals of the rest of us, is always going to be tilted in the direction of making money and not ensuring that they’re actually making the world a better place, and hence I don’t expect any firm like Google, no matter how forward-thinking it claims to be, to, when push comes to shove, actually permit a scarcity society to be replaced by a post-scarcity one.

February 7, 2019: The Vogue Tell-All Interview

Four months later, Mr. and Mrs. Bieber appear together on the cover of Vogue‘s March 2019 issue, and in their joint interview, pull back the curtain on their holy matrimony. “The thing is, marriage is very hard,” Hailey said, “that is the sentence you should lead with. It’s really effing hard.”

The article goes on to reveal that when the pair reconnected in June, Justin was more than a year into a self-imposed tenure of celibacy, working though what he calls “a legitimate problem with sheex.”

“He doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff,” Justin explains. “He’s like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain. I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result.”

Justin and Hailey were saving themselves for marriage—and thankfully, they didn’t have to wait long. The interviewer implies that sex was one of the reasons the duo rushed to the alter back in September. The other reason? “When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life. I was like, Holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for.”

September 27, 2019: The Biebers Anger Hotel Guests

The Biebers’ aren’t making any friends with this wedding, apparently. Guests at the Montage Palmetto Bluff hotel were advised that they can not use the spa, one of the main pools and a restaurant for 48 hours beginning from midday Sunday until midday Tuesday.  Per TMZ, guests have been offered refunds, upgrades and free meals as a result of the inconvenience. The word “LIVID” was used. Intense.

Instagram Is Hiding Like Counts From Followers In A New Test

Instagram will test hiding the like count from photos, and view counts from videos, in an effort to get users to pay attention to the content itself and not their associated engagement metrics, the Facebook-owned app announced Tuesday.

In the test, followers won’t see total likes on photos, or views counts on videos, in their Instagram feeds or when visiting a user’s profile. The account owner will still be able to access their own metrics and see the total likes or view counts for a specific post, although they will need to tap through a post to view those metrics. Instagram said that the “private likes” test would begin later this week for users in Canada at F8, Facebook’s annual developers conference.

Critics of social media companies have said that the public emphasis of such metrics as likes incentivizes negative behavior on platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, leading users to chase engagement to measure their self-worth. Many social media companies use algorithms that take into account a post’s likes or view counts, among other metrics, to determine how to distribute that content to other users.

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri told BuzzFeed News that the test wasn’t about incentivizing specific behavior but “about creating a less pressurized environment where people feel comfortable expressing themselves” and focus less on like counts. “We do hear people worry about how many like counts they get,” he said.

Likes can also be an inaccurate way of measuring genuine engagement from users. There are online services where Instagram users can buy likes or comments, while BuzzFeed News has shown that real people have turned their own accounts into bots to exploit and benefit from mutual engagement.

Mosseri said he wasn’t taking the full removal of like counts or video views “off the table” in the future and noted that he was hoping to learn from this first test.

He also said he would have to think about hiding metrics in Stories, one of Instagram’s most popular features, in the future. Stories — ephemeral photos and videos that are broadcast to a user’s followers or certain groups — allow a post’s author to see how many people viewed that post. (It does not display Story view counts to followers.)

“Stories was, in part, the inspiration for this test,” Mosseri said.

Jane Manchun Wong, a technology blogger who reverse engineers popular apps to uncover unreleased features, first spotted the test earlier this month in an internal employee-only prototype.

Instagram’s test follows a similar one by Twitter. In an experimental prototype app called twttr, like and retweet counts are hidden in a tweet’s replies as part of the company’s efforts to improve how people understand a conversation. Users must tap on each reply to see like and retweet figures.

As a follower, without seeing a like count, “I don’t have this piece of information to help me gauge whether this is a good reply I should read,” said Twitter senior product designer Lisa Ding in explaining the ‘twttr’ experiment to BuzzFeed News. “Does that make you read more? How does that change the way you interact in a conversation? That’s super interesting [to us].”

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has spoken openly about potentially removing other metrics, like follower counts, as well. “The question we’re now asking is, is that necessarily the right incentive? Is the number of followers you have really a proxy for how much you contribute to Twitter and this digital public square?” Dorsey said in a September 2018 interview with Inc.

Mosseri said he was unaware of Twitter’s beta tests that involve hiding engagement figures.

Jill Murphy, the editor-in-chief of Common Sense Media, a nonprofit that studies the digital well-being of minors, said that the “race for more likes” leads kids to post more instead of reflecting on the content of their posts. Minors, she noted, may not think of the long-term ramifications of broadcasting every thought or piece of imagery on a digital record.

Although she was optimistic about potential changes in how companies display engagement metrics, Murphy added that one tweak won’t be enough to move away from a culture in which desire for approval is paramount.

“It’s great that the industry is starting to take real, specific steps, but is removing engagement enough?” she said. “Is that the only solution? Probably not.”

In January 2018, in response to mounting criticism that technology platforms do more harm than good, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company would start focusing on “time well spent,” a phrase Zuckerberg defined as “a responsibility to make sure our services aren’t just fun to use, but also good for people’s well-being.” It’s unclear whether removing likes on Instagram will actually make people feel less horrible about the popularity of their posts, or if they’ll just switch their focus to other forms of validation on the platform.

February 7, 2019: The Vogue Tell-All Interview

Four months later, Mr. and Mrs. Bieber appear together on the cover of Vogue‘s March 2019 issue, and in their joint interview, pull back the curtain on their holy matrimony. “The thing is, marriage is very hard,” Hailey said, “that is the sentence you should lead with. It’s really effing hard.”

The article goes on to reveal that when the pair reconnected in June, Justin was more than a year into a self-imposed tenure of celibacy, working though what he calls “a legitimate problem with sex.”

“He doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff,” Justin explains. “He’s like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain. I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result.”

Justin and Hailey were saving themselves for marriage—and thankfully, they didn’t have to wait long. The interviewer implies that sex was one of the reasons the duo rushed to the alter back in September. The other reason? “When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life. I was like, Holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for.”

How Trump Conquered FacebookWithout Russian Ads

It’s not every day that a former work colleague gets retweeted by the president of the United States.

Last Friday, Rob Goldman, a vice president inside Facebook’s Ads team, rather ill-advisedly published a series of tweets that seemed to confirm the Trump administration’s allegations regarding the recent indictments of 13 Russian nationals by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. To wit, the tweets said that the online advertising campaign led by the shadowy Internet Research Agency was meant to divide the American people, not influence the 2016 election.

Before turning to writing, he dropped out of a doctoral program in physics to work on Goldman Sachs’ credit trading desk, then joined the Silicon Valley startup world, where he founded his own startup (acquired by Twitter in 2011) and finally joined Facebook’s early monetization team, where he headed the company's targeting efforts. His 2016 memoir, Chaos Monkeys, was a New York Times best seller and NPR Best Book of the Year, and his writing has appeared in Vanity Fair, The Guardian, and The Washington Post. He splits his time between a sailboat on the San Francisco Bay and a yurt in Washington’s San Juan Islands.

You’re probably skeptical of Rob’s claim, and I don’t blame you. The world looks very different to people outside the belly of Facebook’s monetization beast. But when you’re on the inside, like Rob is and like I was, and you have access to the revenue dashboards detailing every ring of the cash register, your worldview tends to follow what advertising data can and cannot tell you.

From this worldview, it's still not clear how much influence the IRA had with its Facebook ads (which, as others have pointed out, is just one small part of the huge propaganda campaign that Mueller is currently investigating). But no matter how you look at them, Russia’s Facebook ads were almost certainly less consequential than the Trump campaign’s mastery of two critical parts of the Facebook advertising infrastructure: The ads auction, and a benign-sounding but actually Orwellian product called Custom Audiences (and its diabolical little brother, Lookalike Audiences). Both of which sound incredibly dull, until you realize that the fate of our 242-year-old experiment in democracy once depended on them, and surely will again.

Like many things at Facebook, the ads auction is a version of something Google built first. As on Google, Facebook has a piece of ad real estate that it’s auctioning off, and potential advertisers submit a piece of ad creative, a targeting spec for their ideal user, and a bid for what they’re willing to pay to obtain a desired response (such as a click, a like, or a comment). Rather than simply reward that ad position to the highest bidder, though, Facebook uses a complex model that considers both the dollar value of each bid as well as how good a piece of clickbait (or view-bait, or comment-bait) the corresponding ad is. If Facebook’s model thinks your ad is 10 times more likely to engage a user than another company’s ad, then your effective bid at auction is considered 10 times higher than a company willing to pay the same dollar amount.

A canny marketer with really engaging (or outraging) content can goose their effective purchasing power at the ads auction, piggybacking on Facebook’s estimation of their clickbaitiness to win many more auctions (for the same or less money) than an unengaging competitor. That’s why, if you’ve noticed a News Feed ad that’s pulling out all the stops (via provocative stock photography or other gimcrackery) to get you to click on it, it’s partly because the advertiser is aiming to pump up their engagement levels and increase their exposure, all without paying any more money.

During the run-up to the election, the Trump and Clinton campaigns bid ruthlessly for the same online real estate in front of the same swing-state voters. But because Trump used provocative content to stoke social media buzz, and he was better able to drive likes, comments, and shares than Clinton, his bids received a boost from Facebook’s click model, effectively winning him more media for less money. In essence, Clinton was paying Manhattan prices for the square footage on your smartphone’s screen, while Trump was paying Detroit prices. Facebook users in swing states who felt Trump had taken over their news feeds may not have been hallucinating.

(Speaking of Manhattan vs. Detroit prices, there are some (very nonmetaphorical) differences in media costs across the country that also impacted Trump’s ability to reach voters. Broadly, advertising costs in rural, out-of-the-way areas are considerably less than in hotly contested, dense urban areas. As each campaign tried to mobilize its base, largely rural Trump voters were probably cheaper to reach than Clinton’s urban voters. Consider Germantown, Pa. (a Philly suburb Clinton won by a landslide) vs. Belmont County, Ohio (a rural county Trump comfortably won). Actual media costs are closely guarded secrets, but Facebook’s own advertiser tools can give us some ballpark estimates. For zip code 43950 (covering the county seat of St. Clairsville, Ohio), Facebook estimates an advertiser can show an ad to about 83 people per dollar. For zip code 19144 in the Philly suburbs, that number sinks to 50 people an ad for every dollar of ad spend. Averaged over lots of time and space, the impacts on media budgets can be sizable. The above auction analysis is even more true for News Feed, which is only based on engagement, with every user mired in a self-reinforcing loop of engagement, followed by optimized content, followed by more revealing engagement, then more content, ad infinitum. The candidate who can trigger that feedback loop ultimately wins. The Like button is our new ballot box, and democracy has been transformed into an algorithmic popularity contest.

But how to trigger the loop? For that, we need the machinery of targeting. (Full disclosure: I was the original product manager for Custom Audiences, and along with a team of other product managers and engineers, I launched the first versions of Facebook precision targeting in the summer of 2012, in those heady and desperate days of the IPO and sudden investor expectation.)

Despite folklore about “selling your data,” most Facebook advertisers couldn’t care less about your Likes, your drunk college photos, or your gossipy chats with a boyfriend. What advertisers want to do is find the person who left a product unpurchased in an online shopping cart, just used a loyalty card to buy diapers at Safeway, or registered as a Republican voter in Stark County, Ohio (a swing county in a swing state).

Custom Audiences lets them do that. It’s the tunnel beneath the data wall that allows the outside world into Facebook’s well-protected garden, and it’s like that by design.

Browsed for shoes and then saw them on Facebook? You’re in a Custom Audience.

Registered for an email newsletter or used your email as login somewhere? You’re in a Custom Audience.

Ordered something to a postal address known to merchants and marketers? You’re definitely in a Custom Audience.

Here’s how it works in practice:

A campaign manager takes a list of emails or other personal data for people they think will be susceptible to a certain type of messaging (e.g. people in Florida who donated money to Trump For America). They upload that spreadsheet to Facebook via the Ads Manager tool, and Facebook scours its user data, looks for users who match the uploaded spreadsheet, and turns the matches into an “Audience,” which is really just a set of Facebook users.

Facebook can also populate an audience by reading a user’s cookies—those digital fragments gathered through a user’s wanderings around the web. Half the bizarre conspiracy theories around Facebook targeting boil down to you leaving a data trail somewhere inside our consumer economy that was then uploaded via Custom Audiences. In the language of database people, there’s now a “join” between the Facebook user ID (that’s you) and this outside third-party who knows what you bought, browsed, or who you voted for (probably). That join is permanent, irrevocable, and will follow you to every screen where you’ve used Facebook.

The above is pretty rudimentary data plumbing. But only when you’ve built a Custom Audience can you build Lookalike Audiences— the most unknown, poorly understood, and yet powerful weapon in the Facebook ads arsenal.

With a mere mouse click from our hypothetical campaign manager, Facebook now searches the friends of everyone in the Custom Audience, trying to find everyone who (wait for it) “looks like” you. Using a witches’ brew of mutual engagement—probably including some mix of shared page Likes, interacting with similar News Feed or Ads content, a score used to measure your social proximity to friends—the Custom Audience is expanded to a bigger set of like-minded people. Lookalikes.

(Another way to picture it: Your social network resembles a nutrient-rich petri dish, just sitting out in the open. Custom Audiences helps mercenary marketers find that dish, and lets them plant the bacterium of a Facebook post inside it. From there, your own interaction with the meme, which is echoed in News Feed, spreads it to your immediate vicinity. Lookalike Audiences finishes the job by pushing it to the edges of your social petri dish, to everyone whose tastes and behaviors resemble yours. The net result is a network overrun by an infectious meme, dutifully placed there by an advertiser, and spread by the ads and News Feed machinery.)

We’ve all contributed to this political balkanization by self-sorting (or being sorted by Facebook) into online tribes that get morphed into filter bubbles, which are then studiously colonized by commercial memes planted and spread there by a combination of Custom and Lookalike Audiences. One of the ways the Trump campaign leveraged Lookalike Audiences was through its voter suppression campaigns among likely Clinton voters. They seeded the Audiences assembly line with content about Clinton that was engaging but dispiriting. This is one of the ways that Trump won the election, by the very tools that were originally built to help companies like Bed Bath & Beyond sell you towels.

Unsurprisingly, the Russians also apparently made use of Custom Audiences in their ads campaign. The unwary clicker on a Russian ad who then visited their propaganda site suddenly could find yet more planted content in their Feed, which could generate downstream engagement in Feed, and thus the great Facebook wheel turned. The scale of their spend was puny, however, a measly $100,000, which pales in comparison to the millions Trump spent on online advertising.

The above isn’t mere informed speculation, the Trump campaign admitted to its wide use of both Custom and Lookalike audiences. There seems to be little public coverage of whether the Clinton campaign used Facebook Ads extensively, but there’s no reason to think her campaign did not exploit the same tools.

“I always wonder why people in politics act like this stuff is so mystical,” Brad Parscale, the leader of the Trump data effort, told reporters in late 2016. “It’s the same shit we use in commercial, just has fancier names.”

He’s absolutely right. None of this is even novel: It’s merely best practice for any smart Facebook advertiser. Custom Audiences was launched almost six (!) years ago, marketed publicly at the time, and only now is becoming a mainstream talking point. The ads auction has been studied by marketers and academics for even longer. The only surprise is how surprising it can still seem to many.

If we’re going to reorient our society around Internet echo chambers, with Facebook and Twitter serving as our new Athenian agora, then we as citizens should understand how that forum gets paid for. Rarely will the owners of that now-privatized space deign to explain how they’re keeping the lights on. Plotting Russians make for a good story, and external enemies frequently serve an internal purpose, but the trail of blame often leads much closer to home. It’s right there, topped by a big, blue bar on our smartphone screens, and could very well be how you arrived at what you’re reading right now.

Update (February 27, 2018): In an unusual move, Andrew 'Boz' Bosworth, former VP of Facebook Ads, posted average CPMs for both the Clinton and Trump campaigns this afternoon. The figures are national averages over time, and while they fluctuate wildly, they mostly show the Trump campaign paying more on a CPM basis than Clinton. While interesting, and the transparency of Facebook is admirable, the data only refute the rather strong statement that Trump always and everywhere paid less. By and large, these data do not confirm or deny the hypotheses contained in this piece.

The data that Facebook needs to show us are average CPMs broken down by targeting type, action type (e.g., clicks or likes), and geography. The first two would help distinguish direct-response campaigns, which typically are precision targeted and high CPM, from more brand-style ad campaigns that are broadly targeted and low CPM. Combining the data from both styles of campaign—which broadly define the two types that advertisers undertake—can be very deceptive, and the two campaign types need to be judged separately.

Furthermore, a breakdown by geography would help determine whether another assertion made in this piece is correct: That Trump paid less to mobilize his base than Hillary. Obviously, combining data nationwide makes this very hard to figure out.

Reportedly, Facebook has asked the campaigns to be more forthcoming with data. As it's in both those campaigns' interests at this point, one can only hope they do so. As we used to say at Facebook: "Data wins arguments."

5 Unbelievably Simple Ways To Increase Your Twitter Exposure

Twitter is an amazing marketing, sales, and customer support tool. Its increasingly important role in helping campaigns go viral and political messages get spread is obvious proof of its power of influence.

In 2016, an insurance company called Esurance ran a Twitter-focused campaign during the Super Bowl. The campaign earned them over 160K tweets and literally millions of impressions!

Clearly, exposure is key to success on Twitter’s platform. Here are five unbelievably simple but highly effective ways to increase your exposure on Twitter.

1. Get the basics out of the way

When sharing content on Twitter, it’s vital to understand the fundamentals of how the platform works. A few small changes can dramatically boost your visibility.

Here’s what NOT to do:

Don’t overload your tweets with hashtags. You may think this helps and taps into trends, but it looks spammy, unprofessional and decreases the ultimate shareability of your tweets.

Don’t begin tweets with @mentions. Doing this limits the visibility of tweets to you, the owner of the @mention handle, and any mutual followers you may have.

Don’t toot your own horn too hard. This can be particularly damaging if you’re a small business and you don’t already have a passionate fan following. Instead, behave as a neutral and trustworthy information source to build respect for your business.

Don’t over-write your tweets. The 140-character limit can be your friend by pushing you to craft neat, punchy and effective tweets. Don’t abuse it by trying to squeeze too much info into a single tweet, and avoid shortening words such as ‘you’ to ‘u’.

Don’t tweet just for the sake of it. Tweet frequency isn’t valued so much as tweet quality and tweet engagement, in the eyes of both Twitter’s algorithm and your own followers.

In addition to following these DON’Ts, you can incorporate the following DO’s:

Sharing industry news, expert insights, case studies and interesting tweets to help increase your exposure.

Researching the effectiveness and popularity of the hashtags you DO use.

Using DrumUp’s content, @mention and hashtag recommendations to simplify your effort.

2. Get creative with visuals to beat the 140-character limit

Twitter lets you upload videos as large as 512MB (or 140 seconds). How great is that? With this feature and Periscope combined, there’s huge potential for audience engagement.

Video can be great for a bit of low-budget PR. For instance, look at what UFC did to connect with Twitter followers. It wasn’t a professionally shot fight sequence – they literally had popular fighter Menace Bermudez start a cooking show in his kitchen.

Another great idea is to use screenshots to add context to tweets, make them stand out or reiterate a point.

For instance, Moz founder Rand Fishkin uses screenshots in tweets often. This one helps emphasize his opinion on the topic being discussed.

Screenshots can also help you beat the 140-character limit and get away with sharing a text-heavy post.

You can also even use graphs in your tweets. Breaking research and case studies hold a lot of bearing in the professional world. If your company has original case studies that are suitable for public distribution, you can portray them powerfully using graphs.

3. Embed tweets in your blog posts and guest posts

Have you ever tried to get customers to write testimonials for your brand? If you have, you know it’s like pulling teeth.

Customers do, however, tweet positive experiences from time to time without being prompted.

These tweets are gold when utilized properly. You can feature these Twitter testimonials on your blog or website’s testimonials page, or use them in places where you need social proof – like a sales email or your checkout page.

You can also embed tweets as examples or illustrate your point in a blog post, just like I have in this one.

If you have conversational-style SlideShare or video content to share with fans, you can always first tweet it and then embed that tweet into a blog post. That way, your readers can always click on the embedded post and reply to the tweet.

Embedding tweets is really simple. When you see a tweet you want to embed, simply click on the drop-down menu and use the URL generated when you click on ‘embed tweet’.

If you’re using WordPress, you can just copy the URL of the tweet and paste it in your visual editor whereever you want the tweet embedded.

4. Use Twitter lists to create lasting relationships

If you want to receive consistent engagement on your tweets, then you need to build a small and active community of brand advocates. Generally, a big part of receiving love on Twitter is giving love in return.

You need to take interest in what your team, customers, and Twitter friends are up to for them to reciprocate in kind. It’s just like in real life.

So how can you keep in touch with everyone who matters on Twitter? Use Twitter lists!

Madalyn Sklar has her lists organized brilliantly:

Create separate lists for your office team, webinar attendees, people you are trying to get to notice you (prospect brand ambassadors or influencers), and people who share content that is useful to your audience.

Engage with them on a needs-must basis. For instance, you should regularly initiate meaningful conversations with people you want to be noticed by.

You could even create a list of your biggest fans and reward them from time to time with contests or giveaways.

Bloggers and industry experts are important because they can give you access to new, untapped markets. One tweet by an influencer could give your brand more exposure. For that to happen, they have to notice you and you have to build a good rapport with them.

You don’t have to manually create Twitter lists for bloggers and influencers, you can just subscribe to public lists created by reliable brands or people.

You can also keep your clients engaged by interacting with them via a separate, private Twitter list.

5. Use advanced search to find unique opportunities

It’s a smart move to use Twitter’s advanced search to monitor mentions and conduct research for content ideas. A valuable find in either of these categories is a potential opportunity for more exposure.

To access the search page, click here. Alternatively, you can use Twitter’s default search bar on the platform.

To view the most popular content created by a particular website, or in an industry, you can use Twitter’s search operators – “keyword + min_retweets:[number]” or “keyword min_faves:[number]”.

For example, if I want to find all Jeff Bullas’ blog posts that contain tweets that were retweeted over 30 times, I’ll type jeffbullas.com min_retweets:30.

To keep track of mentions, you could set up an automated system. Warble lets you monitor tweets with a daily updates email. You can also set up smart keyword combinations, like ‘your brand name’ + ‘wish’, or ‘your industry keyword’ + ‘need’.

These can help you find unique opportunities to increase brand exposure. For instance, dog food brand Purina wished a customer’s dog happy birthday. He was so pleased that he wrote a blog post that attracted a lot of attention.

Twitter has incredible potential to create real-time and raw interactions that ultimately boost exposure for your business.

The key is to use original and attention-grabbing content and take an open-minded approach to finding opportunities for exposure.

February 7, 2019: The Vogue Tell-All Interview

Four months later, Mr. and Mrs. Bieber appear together on the cover of Vogue‘s March 2019 issue, and in their joint interview, pull back the curtain on their holy matrimony. “The thing is, marriage is very hard,” Hailey said, “that is the sentence you should lead with. It’s really effing hard.”

The article goes on to reveal that when the pair reconnected in June, Justin was more than a year into a self-imposed tenure of celibacy, working though what he calls “a legitimate problem with sheex.”

“He doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff,” Justin explains. “He’s like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain. I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result.”

Justin and Hailey were saving themselves for marriage—and thankfully, they didn’t have to wait long. The interviewer implies that sex was one of the reasons the duo rushed to the alter back in September. The other reason? “When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life. I was like, Holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for.”

Around 4 p.m. ETA, Justin shared a caption-less photo of an ultrasound to his Instagram feed, leading the internet to believe he and Hailey are expecting their first child. February 7, 2019: The Vogue Tell-All Interview

Four months later, Mr. and Mrs. Bieber appear together on the cover of Vogue‘s March 2019 issue, and in their joint interview, pull back the curtain on their holy matrimony. “The thing is, marriage is very hard,” Hailey said, “that is the sentence you should lead with. It’s really effing hard.”

The article goes on to reveal that when the pair reconnected in June, Justin was more than a year into a self-imposed tenure of celibacy, working though what he calls “a legitimate problem with sex.”

“He doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff,” Justin explains. “He’s like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain. I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result.”
